That was probably 40 years ago around 1984 and I remember it like it was yesterday because a chippy tea was a treat, once a week or twice a month, but that week it was every night for 6 days in a row. 🙂It was up there with going to "Makro" once in a while.

We run a café, which isn't a dedicated fish & chip only establishment so i cannot fully speak on behalf of them, but fish & chips is the most expensive item on our menu. Fish is generally very expensive to buy these days, even at wholesale. Cod from memory is around £34.99 for 2.3kg which give you around 8-9 pieces of fish only which already is ~£4.35 per fish and thats without the chips + extras. Most places now are not even selling you cod, they will be obscure and say fish & chips, serving you with something like Basa instead for similar money to keep costs down. Oil is also very expensive, lets say £28 per 20 litres. Fryers take a lot of oil and need regular changing to be fresh and clean. Big scale chippies probably get better prices on what i described above due to mass buying and agreements with catering suppliers, but it will still be not much cheaper imo. It's high because they need to earn money to survive. There is so many costs to running a restaurant which people dont even consider. Understandably, i am in the same boat when i go out and see the high prices but i can see from their POV and i dont mind paying it every now and then - sadly it will probably only ever go up too

Seems counterintuitive to up prices too much because ultimately people will walk. I’ve stopped going to some that we’re taking the Micky, so basically they have lost trade. I think people forget about where the fish come from. A lot is caught in waters that are dangerous for the fishermen and women who risk their lives to catch them. As an example one of my uncles worked off a trawler out of Hull where my mothers family came from. He did not go to sea once and it was lucky for him, though not for his mates aboard it, because that boat sank with all hands. This was the life of fisher folk. Most families in Hull lost people to the sea. Sorry to ramble on but they deserve every penny they earn, and more.
@bigwideworld3874 ай бұрын
As a Hull lass yes it's true but the bigger issue in this day and age is we don't have a lot of fish left in our waters. Haddock doesn't like our warming waters and has migrated to Scandinavian waters that Brexit has largely banned us from fishing in.

Their large chips (£2.50) would feed 3 or 4 people, as long as it had peas, gravy, curry or all of those with it. Back in the late 1980's I remember buying chip cones (maybe half a "small" chips of today) for 25p. Always bought them as a kid, because those chip cones cost the same as a Mars bar, but the chips were way more filling. We were poor... More competition would be a factor. Back in the day, the chip shop would only need to open for a few hours a day, get a massive que and sell up by closing. Now to compete with all the other take a ways and fast food options, they need to be open all day increasing their costs wile spreading the purchasing over the day rather just those few hours they were open. I am sure anyone over 35 will remember always having to queue up outside for ages to get your order and having to remember the Monday 12-2. Tuesday closed. Wednesday 4-6... and so on.

The cost of fish and chips has gone up because of the lack of customers. People don't have to go out to get a takeaway now, they can have it delivered to wherever they are within 20 - 30 minutes from any takeaway of their choice, and with the country having a huge change in its ethnicity and culture in the past 10 years, fish and chips is no longer the go to takeaway. Pubs are the same, they have been on the decline in the past 5 years blaming the costs going up, but again it's the lack of customers and change in culture that's causing it. People use to have fish and chips on a Friday for supper/dinner and coming out of the pubs on the weekend they would get fish and chips or a kebab, them days are almost gone now. Give this country another 5 - 10 years and you won't know it anymore.

Great topic to discuss. Love my fish and chips. Over here in Australia you can generally get two pieces of fish and minimum chips for about $20 which I think is roughly £10 over your way. That would feed two people. Some places are more expensive than others. Fish and chips are just as popular over here as they are where you are and the trick is to finding a really good one that provides generous servings for the price and does great chips. So you shop around til you hit a good one. I haven't been in one for a while though so I don't know just how the cost of living crisis has affected prices on this much loved meal. But I know the one I did use was still reasonably priced today. I need fish and chips now you've talked about them 😊

@unionjakjakson4 ай бұрын
@@gordonS293 I agree. Sadly having reached a benchmark, i think that suppliers will be very reluctant to go back to the old prices. You also have to factor in the 3rd world is getting richer. Their mass populations now have more money & they are now able to buy things that 20 yrs ago, only a few could dream of...like Fish. Hence the price will follow demand, fish is finite. In a nutshell, if you want Haddock or Cod, we will have to outbid them!

I think it costs more to sit in and eat but I can't remember. They are a seafood restaurant so have a lot more on offer but that's the popular fish & chips meals. It's funny because fish and chips used to be a workers' meal, a cheap dig-in. I think it's partly down to increased regulation of fishing, partly labor costs of handling (battering and cutting), partly less tolerance of bad product (fishy fish, old oil) by the consumer, partly the cost of transport, and who knows what else. The town where I live (in the States!), we have one great chippie and some lesser possibilities, and I don't think I'm getting out of them without dropping $20, so I buy frozen (breaded, not battered) fish and frozen chips and stay at home. I do cook, but that's a lot of oil to deal with for one meal.

Historical overfishing worldwide has drastically reduced the numbers of fish in the ocean, so the cost of it has gone sky high! It's too bad. Ocean fish used to be an excellent source of lower priced protein.

We had a takeaway from Blackpool ‘s famous Yorkshire Fisheries where it’s been rated very highly by locals & tourists alike just about 3 weeks ago before we left to go home to Scotland. We got a king Haddock ( bloody massive) with loads of chips which is about £17.40 or £17.60 . Added extras curry sauce, tartare sauce ketchup, mushy peas and gravy all homemade and delicious. We bought a can of Vimto and a bottle of Coca Cola . It came to around £22 or £23 all in . We shared it me my other half and the dog . It was a rare treat. Probably saved money that way because the fish was massive and chips plentiful. It was a rare treat won’t be back down until the next year now . Sat in the car in the central car park opposite Coral Island 🏝️ looking out to the sea on my left hand side and the tower on the front. But most of the time now we make our own at home using an air fryer which you can cook haddock or cod alongside simultaneously for 15 minutes at 200 heat setting. Easy peasy stuff .

Fish and Chips got hit with inflation on everything, it's no joke, could probably write an essay on this. Fish is expensive and everyone wants cod mostly imported, cooking oil more than doubled in wholesale prices, potatoes used to be cheap and a lot of farmers dropped production around 2015 for more profitable crop. Those that do still grow potatoes got hit by poor yield due to bad weather, if you remember last year all our normal veggies were tiny. Then you have rent and energy prices, businesses aren't protected with energy price cap like household consumers.

I cook my own, I do 50p per portion fish either battered or breaded from Tesco’s “hearty food company” with cauliflower cheese (50p each) and various types of chips but always the cheapest and healthiest only 125g I was diabetic, but this diet has helped my lose 10 stone and my diabetes has gone into remission. I was doing mushy peas but don’t need those anymore so now I have 80g of Birds Eye frozen peas and 50g of mushy peas. Sometimes I can even eat that meal twice a day, not great but I haven’t been feeling hungry and can stick to 1500 calories per day. All going well until my medication changed, don’t need my diabetes medication anymore so my doctor stopped that. However that was a diet suppressant, and I am now struggling to keep my diet down to 1700 calories per day. Good luck if you go this as I have, for someone who had zero will power I found cutting back on things hard but not impossible. Reducing one thing at a time is how I did it. We have fish and chips about half a dozen times a year. Two fish, share a large chips and a mushy peas about £27. If it’s good I think that’s fine. Compared to the price of Domino’s pizza (we are not keen but our daughter and son in law do when they stay with us - it’s a treat and they don’t have one near them). The cost of electricity is a factor. The best fryers use electricity as they create more even heat. Gas too for cooking. All adds up when you look at the cost of the ingredients. Just checked the list of Uk richest 100 people. None run a chippie.

Five things killed this popular meal 1 Brexit we could sell our fish to the EU and now we cannot without tarrifs. 2 Energy costs to make the food cook it. 3 landlords demanding exoerbitant rents ie make the buisness fail and sell it for housing. 4 Compition by local food outlets or big chains like M&D and KFC. 5 The cost of labour not the govenment but staff as the people of this land cannot not afford to live on the pittance of the minimum wage anymore. Sustainable practices like line caught are less cost effective than trawlers but cause far far less damage to the ocean and other marine life. For example, pole and line fishing uses barbless hooks and short lines that can be checked more frequently. This reduces the risk of accidentally catching and killing other animals, such as dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, and diving birds. It also avoids overfishing. Myself personally, I don't mind paying more, I just have it less often.

The increase in energy costs in 2022 caused a massive increase in costs for Fish and Chips. However, since then, the energy prices have dropped 40% and more, with no reduction in the cost of Fish and Chips. It is things like this why people think they are being ripped off.
@oneofthenorth4 ай бұрын
@@alanalderson1427 since the end of covid, potatoes have doubled in price. Fish is at least 50% higher if you are buying decent stuff (haddock, cod etc), oil has tripled in price. Energy costs are up, fuel is up. These also affect the suppliers of these products, which put the prices up further. Most food businesses (and there will be exceptions) aren’t putting prices up to fleece anyone, it’s literally what is needed to keep trading. And there has to be some profit or else what would be the point? There are hundreds of factors in deciding what you need to sell your product for. And they are all much higher than they used to be.
@alanalderson14274 ай бұрын
@oneofthenorth as I said, since the height of the energy price rises, energy costs have dropped by 40%. There is no evidence to suggest potato or fish prices have risen dramatically. Transport fuel cost have dropped dramatically over the past year. Remember when petrol was over £2 per litre. Now about £1.30. Inflation overall has dropped. I don't know where you get the information from, but it is totally wrong. My information can be verified.
@oneofthenorth4 ай бұрын
@@alanalderson1427 I work in a restaurant. Potato prices have doubled. Fish prices have risen at least in line with what I stated. Oil to fry things has trebled in price. Energy prices to domestic consumers may have come down a bit recently, but are still higher than before the start of the Ukraine war. And energy prices for businesses aren’t regulated in the same way as consumer energy anyway. In fact, I’ll go further. Flour prices are 50% higher than they were 3 years ago. Minimum wage has gone up. Base interest rate is up. At what point would you accept that businesses have had no choice but to put their prices up? And not even to cover the full cost of the increases. A fair percentage of it has had to be absorbed in order to try and keep customers coming through the door.
@alanalderson14274 ай бұрын
@oneofthenorth the point is prices for Fish and Chips have increased to allow for cost increases, but they never reduce when costs decrease.
@oneofthenorth4 ай бұрын
@@alanalderson1427 but they haven’t reduced. I review menu prices every other week at the moment to see what we can do to make things fair. Have you been shopping? Those kind of tactics in a restaurant will result in a lot less custom

Maybe the high prices will curb gluttony? I don’t see a cost of living crisis, if I judge by waist size 🤷♀️. Seems like a lot of folks just aren’t spending money to eat out. Maybe just maybe, these places are charging more to make up for the short fall of customers? I’ve a local horse box food place near by and the guys charging prices as if he was in a 5* restaurant 🤷♀️. A 6oz beef Pattie is costing him around a £1 and he sells the burger for £8.50. Personally at that price, I’m heading for a ribeye from the shop and I’ll cook it myself. I’d rather have a 10oz ribeye than a beef burger that really is just overpriced!

Most of the people at the top don't give a damn about sustainability where fish is concerned, just the money lining their bank balances, so the product just gets smaller and smaller as the price increases. With the exception of maybe Greggs, the days of cheap hot food to go is basically over, the economies of scale just aren't there anymore when every single factor in the production chain has basically doubled over the past four years and prices won't be coming down. Also, I think a lot of people have just changed their habits, eating out less or getting fewer takeaways, which in turn raises the price because of supply and demand. When people do get a takeaway it'll be more of a special occasion than something they do on a whim, so they'd rather push the boat out and get something pricey but not what they'd have all the time, like a really nice properly done burger or a Chinese or Indian
