I’ve heard GameCube games are small for 2 reasons. Reason 1 is to prevent piracy, and reason 2 is to make the loading times faster. Also the GameCube cases were smaller but only in japan.

I always thought the Japanese GameCube Game Cases were better than the North American Cases I don't know why but that's just my Opinion
@Δημήτρης-θ7θ3 жыл бұрын
Reason 1 (prevent piracy) is a myth: GameCube discs are MiniDVD discs which rely on additional proprietary features for copy protection (just like PS2 and Xbox discs do with full-size DVD discs), and GameCube games can be burnt using a regular DVD recorder and then play on a modded GameCube console. I think it's reason 2, aka improve seek times. Back in the N64 era, Nintendo made a big deal about how the slow seek times of optical discs restricted freedom of movement (which they did), so they probably wanted to minimize seek times on their first disc-based console. Weirdly, the Wii uses full-sized DVD discs so it doesn't have the seek-time advantage. BTW the Wii U did use a custom disc format (a heavily modified derivative of Blu-Ray disc), so Wii U discs cannot actually be burnt with any consumer piece of equipment. But that's OK, a modded Wii U can boot games off USB.
@nobody86853 жыл бұрын
That didn't do much because UMD discs can still be read with a normal DVD writer from a laptop or desktop. Still, it can't be completely copied because of the burned codes into the disc which are used to indentify where it was the disc created and when plus your own license key. That's the part which anyone can't copy by normal means. It's like trying to make a perfect copy of a 100$ paper. The processing method it's simply not possible to be made at home, at least completely, but if there will be a way. We'll be able to make copies of all games from the earliest consoles up to PlayStation 5 and Xbox.

Have you heard of the VideoNow player? Those had discs larger than GameCube discs, but still smaller than full-size DVDs, I think Nintendo should have went with the same disc size (as in, measurements/dimensions) as the VideoNow discs (it would have greatly helped with storage limitations, especially if it was made dual layer capable)

They're screwed up with 3rd Party Developers since Nintendo 64. Nintendo still sticking their a--es on Cartridges makes a lot of pain in the a-- for Developers to makes games for N64 coz Cartridges are pretty limited on File Storage Size. That's why they just made games for PlayStation instead.

GameCube games have something called the "burst cut" area near the center ring of the disc that the console uses to detect if it's a legitimate game or not. Normal CD / DVD burners are incapable or recreating the burst cut area on the disc through normal means, since the burst cut area was essentially built into the disc itself at the factory.

If you got games/accessories with it then fine but the console by itself is kinda overpriced for 50€

It's so small to avoid piracy, but it backfired because some games that could fit in one disc on dvd (normal) format, requires, 3 to 4 disc on the Gam Cube's optical disc.
@jmb.88 Жыл бұрын
1 - To prevent piracy in 2001. 2 - With a proprietary disc they didn't need to pay fees to the DVD companies which were owners of the standard DVD format. 3 - Faster loading times because the console reads less data (it reads 1.5GB instead of 4.5 GB). If you had one file at a 1.5GB size and another one at a 4.5GB size to be transferred to your computer, which one of them would be transferred faster? The smaller one. That's the point. Having a small disc optimizes the software because the files inside it have to be smaller, compact. A GameCube with a 4.5GB disc capacity would produce longer loading times than the PS2. 4 - To reduce the cost of the console unit. A videogame console with a standard 4.5GB dvd drive needs to have enough internal space to accomodate it and the machine would be bigger because of it. I think Nintendo succeded in reducing the costs of each unit because it is a cheaper and smaller drive that only reads game software. When GameCube launched it was the cheaper console in the market costing 199 dollars.
@Mike-77-YT4 жыл бұрын
here are my thoughts on the GameCube discs. 1: size. while not very common, but much so for instructional videos, MiniDVDs (search minidvd techmoan) were actually standard DVD discs, but smaller, the same size as a mini cd single. 2: boxing. In the US and UK market nintendo, like other companies, opted to use A Maray to produce the official boxes. My theory is that they did this to make the boxes uniform to DVD movie boxes. However, in Japan, they sold their games in smaller boxes, compared to the western market. 3: Piracy. Nintendo acknowledged that the vast majority of pirated games came on full-size discs, so they opted the GameCube to accept only miniDVD discs (of their own format). it is evident that on all Nintendo optical discs, they have a barcode etched in the first main sectors, that verify the region code. If you tried inserting a wii disc into a dvd player or drive, or whatever, the drive would read the disc correctly, until it reads the barcode, therefore, making the drive report the disc as 'unreadable' and immediately cancel reading, and ejecting the disc. only drives licensed by Nintendo will read that barcode correctly. Sidenote: while piracy on the GameCube wasn't easy, it also wasn't impossible either, since there are 'camcorder DVDs' or mini-DVD-R (there may also be a +R variant), but they apparently cost more than standard DVD +/-R, due to camcorders being a lackluster market. 4: space. Japanese home owners are keener on purchasing smaller players and appliances, as they will fit much easily in their homes, larger consoles such as the XBOX and original XBOX ONE cannot sell in Japan in large quantities; it's just too large for Japanese homes. Smaller consoles, such as the GameCube (there's also XBOX series X/S which sold out in Japan, unexpectedly), for example, sell better in Japan because of their smaller form factor, fitting in their homes.

For some reason, Nintendo did solved the problem with mini disc since they used small disc due to privacy which backfired for third party companies. Because of the PS2 having DVD playback Nintendo released a type of GameCube known as Panasonic Q, or just Q. The Q had DVD playback, GameCube support, and played CD's which could've helped Nintendo, and was a little larger than the original GameCube, requiring to have it's own Gameboy player, plus it included it's own remote control for DVD, and a GameCube controller saying Panasonic Q. However this was only released in Japan, so there's region lock, and sold poorly going to hundreds of dollars used. While the ones that are new go for thousands of dollars. They could've done this in the US, but couldn't due to some trouble. If you want to know more about this, I recommend gaming historian.

It was used to combat piracy and the disc size was shortened to make sure of that (disc size still bigger than the dreamcast) since you can’t just buy those DVD’s anywhere for 100 DVD’s for 20 quid and people just go down to a pirate website and download Roma and burn it to a cd then bring all your old games down to GAME (gameshop in the UK) then get cash to buy more DVD’s to pirate games

In my opinion GameCube discs are small because as the console was released in 2001, the technology wasn't that digital as it is now. Or it could be small because the GameCube is a cube size and an normal DVD, or a Wii game won't fit. Probably they made the disc small because when Nintendo were designing the console to be a cube shape basically small discs are beneficial, or maybe they made it small so it's ease of storage.
