I've been on Kindle publishing since 2010, and on Amazon selling books since 2005. I've found its nearly impossible now to get any sales unless there is high visibility of your item in a search, also the saturation of many other titles in your selected genres will flood out any chance your title pops up on a viewers search. In the beginning, early 2010s, Amazon distributed a Kindle reader tablet, this was before android and iphones grew in popularity, and it was very easy to get readership for titles since everyone had one and if a book was published there was a great possibility a reader would see it. Now it's only a wish. You need to invest a lot of money in a ad campaign on kdp to get a readership and worse yet you have to outbid your competition, meaning dishing out even more money to gain visibility. Really it isn't worth it anymore. All that effort I put in books literally went to nothing. I spent 10 years writing one book, and a dedicated three for another one. Still I have yet to gain a profit. 😢😢

Hi Travis, I hear you that it can be a painful process. Though, there is still piles of money to be made on Amazon if you are positioning your books correctly and using the correct strategies when running ads. For $7 I can take a look and usually quickly tell you why your books are having difficulty. This is a 15-minute power session. You can find the details about this in the description.

No, but I think initially you need to give it time to be scanned and let amazon make notes of all your keyword, my look inside is not showing up on most of my books which I don't think helps. Been on KDP for almost 2 months, have just over 50 books. So I'm going to wait for a month or two see what happens then start the optimizing, some good tips on your video, I was doing some of what you say and I feel some of mine are better than the best sellers in one or two cases. To date only have 4 sales so still early days.

This sounds great and you are on the right track. There are 1000s of strategies here that can be implemented. It is hard to tell which ones will tip your book over into sales. A big one is running ads against your books. Additionally, the look inside is extremely important and is something you should definitely contact Amazon about since it is a key part of getting your book to sell.

I just published my first coloring book a week or so ago and it only has 3 sales (which are from family) I have heard people say that you have to publish lots of books to get some sales but coloring books are hard to make and take a long time. Also I prefer not to spend money on ads if I can help it. What should I do?
@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow
@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow Жыл бұрын
Great question! The challenge with coloring books is that there are 80K on Amazon. So, getting discovered is the challenge. I had a client with 20 coloring books and 0 sales. Running ads is absolutely essential for getting books to sell. So, definitely worth figuring out. Did you get my checklist in the description?

Interesting to watch this again after over six months. I didn't realise you could do your covers again. I thought once a book was published, that was it. Lead magnets: maybe for me a short PDF including the first chapter of each of the first three books. What do you think, Chris? The notion of a non-existent market makes more sense to me second time. 6:40 - ''You already see people buying, but there's a low demand for that market.'' This has me confused. Don't you mean low supply? Regarding my comment in my original review concerning readers' comments, I understand exactly what you're getting at now. However, when you say: ''It will tell you what you need to do with your book to make it even better'', sometimes a number readers will complain about things like ''cliched characters'' or ''gratuitous violence'' etc., when the characters are not cliched and the violence is central to the type of book [not mine, by the way]. Very useful second viewing.

Hi Nick! Great questions. Let's start with lead magnet. I wouldn't use first chapters, but rather character insights or maybe a map of your world or even better would be a short story. Once people like you, they will be dying to subscribe to your list and get a little more content when it is free.
@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow

Yes, low supply was what I meant on the market front. People are eager to buy books on cryptocurrency and yet there are few books available. What does that mean? That means that any book on cryptocurrency will start jumping in sales. It can have a lousy cover, lousy contents, and terrible description. As long as the keyword crypto currency shows up in the title, that book will start selling. In fact, people are much more willing to accept the content even if it has issues since they don't have other options available. That means that even OK books can make a killing if your market it right.

I really like you comments on readers comments. This is a little tricky since some of the feedback you will get may be because the person giving the feedback isn't in your target audience. Like a book on how to program in Javascript, a grandma writes a comment that it was too confusing to learn. However, she may not be your target audience. So, we just ignore those comments and wish them the best of luck. What we do need to watch out for is repeat comments from our target audience telling us something we need to fix in our books. The bigger the audience you have, the more feedback you will get. The more feedback you get, the faster you can fix issues in your book. Unless you want to be a starving artist, the correct strategy is to identify your target audience and give them what they want. It is very simple. It isn't selling out. It is just listening to your readers and adjusting your content based upon the feedback you are getting. The alternative, is to ignore them in the name of art. Then, 100 years from now someone may find your manuscript and realize it is amazing. However, unless your book gets super popular in the first place, how will they ever find it? The key is that once you are dominating the market, then you can write the books you personally want to write without a care in the world for what your audience wants to read. That is a strategy many artists use. Get famous first and then go do your own thing :)

No. My books are not selling. I think the cover must be a turn-off on my electric car book, and my preparing for retirement book was written by a ghostwriter. I was never really interested in the concept, which was handed to me by AIA. My memoire, well, memories I hear never sell. Now I have a romance novel which is about to go live, but not yet. I have learned from some mistakes but I am very shy and circumspect about getting an audience, and email list etc. I cannot believe anyone would want to be on such a list. The books have merit in themselves, but my wariness is probably my enemy.

Hi Philip and thanks for signing up for a $7 15-minute Power Session. There are a number of strategies here that we should take a deep dive into. This includes, why isn't the existing book selling. When you talk about optimising by checking out existing books and people's comments on them, I don't think this works for fiction. You cannot allow people's comments on other writers' books to drive your writing. I'm sure everything else you say has relevance for non-fiction.
@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow
@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow 3 жыл бұрын
I'm really glad you brought this topic up! There is always a goldmine in hearing what people are complaining about. This is true for any product on the market. If you are going to sell apples. You go and see what people are complaining about regarding other people's apples and see how you can position yours to cover those complaints. In books it might be a few I have heard... the book is too short, the book has a cliffhanger at the end, there are grammatical mistakes.. etc. For every single genre on Amazon, there will be a huge list of things people are complaining about. Just go straight to the 1 and 2-star reviews and see what it is. In fiction it may include, way too many characters, or poor character development, or killing off the main character, or hard to follow. In a mystery, it may be revealing too early who did it. The best part of this strategy is that you have your target audience all in a room telling you what they don't like. This information is invaluable when it comes to writing your book. I do agree that this strategy is 2-3X as powerful with non-fiction, but I would never overlook its power in fiction and for that matter every single other product on the market (regardless of niche).

@@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow I didn't mean that I would ignore any customer feedback, just that some of their comments are often not much use. If a book has grammatical errors, sure, but I suggest in that case, the writer should do something else. Too many characters and poor character development are also fundamental errors, although what constitutes too many characters for one reader may equal just the right amount for another. [I have read that criticism of James Ellroy. If you don't know who is is, google him]. Killing off a main character may be an essential part of a story for it to work. As for 'hard to follow', if that criticism refers to the plot, and other reviewers like the plot, obviously the criticism is misplaced. I've seen that said quite often in badly written reviews. If every negative criticism was taken on board, the lowest common denominator would be pursued.
@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow
@SelfPublishingMadeEasyNow 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o Good point. You are exactly right that it would be dangerous to take into account every negative review. I think the main issue is just taking into account patterns where multiple readers are having the same issue. I also use this same method with choosing a hotel or Airbnb. Do multiple reviewers seem to comment on the same issue. Though, some common problems may just connect to a particular book. On the other hand, some of these common issues may be relevant for all books in a genre. Like a children's book that gets hammered for using words that are too advanced for children ages 3-6. That is a criticism that other authors with the same target audience.
