I think it’s also due to barriers disappearing regarding what is and isn’t cool in skateboarding, paired with older former skaters getting back into it because “being too old” to skate isn’t a thing anymore.

At 56 with bad legs, i don't skate anymore, but I'm partial to those old 80's style boards. I used to bomb parking garages on my Black Flag "Joan Crawford board. I once saw a Rodney Mullen video and set out to try some flips on it, long before kickflips were a standard thing, to little success. I miss skating though. I bought a longboard 10 years ago, but can't stand on it anymore. Oh well, thanks for a trip down memory lane John.

At 52, I feel you, but I just noticed a little local skatepark that nobody uses as we live in a more rural setting now. Every time I pass it, I consider hitting up the skate shop and getting back at it. I stopped around the time technicality started to dominate over style and aggression. Don't get me wrong, Mullen is my all time favorite and personally think he is the GOAT simply because he basically invented all the flip and spin variations that seem ubiquitous today, but a guy like Vallely just brought brute force and aggression to street skating, and guys like Hosoi and Cab just had that effortless style that made them something to watch. Maybe start really cautiously, and ease back into some moves. People keep telling me it gets easier to move these aching joints when you use them 😆. Just have to start working on my story for the inevitable ER visit 😂.

The Santa Cruz boards that are basically a combo between the old school and popsicle are PERFECT for long distance street skating. Throw some 58 spitfire wheels on and it can do all the tricks you need but it’s also gives you more stability to cruise (also shout out to Franky from primitive riding an egg shaped 9inch deck those are dope too)

Do you have 1 on mind specifically. Im really new to skating and thinking about a more comfortabele street setup, also for rougher roads.
@ejj9956
@ejj9956 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeroenbeskers3012 my street setup at the moment is a 9.0 Element deck (Santa cruz makes 9 also) standard popsicle shape, Independent hollow trucks, Bronson g3 bearing, Spitfire full conical 58m wheels and grizzly grip (no different than any other grip) I’ll warn you tho this is a BIG setup and most ppl wouldn’t go past an 8.5. I like it because I’m 6’1 and have size 13 feet so a bigger board feel normal to me and seeing franky from primitive crush on a 9.1 deck. The big wheels and big deck and wide trucks help on rougher ground imo. I wouldn’t get a shaped deck like the Santa Cruz ones I talked about in my first comment if you’re new to skating, I think a popsicle shape is better at first.

Siiick 🔥 I grew up with this kind of shape. I had a Mike McGill board. Nowadays what confuses me the most with flat nose boards is just throwing down the board and mounting it with the front foot. I can’t “feel” my foot position like on a popsticle board, so I’m sometimes mounting it a little too far out on the nose. It feels kinda scary. With a modern street board feet just fall into place because I can feel the nose rise.

I skated one of these old school decks, for the hell of it, a few boards back, and I remember it being poppier than a usual board, but harder to do any flip tricks, because of the lack of concave. I didn’t like that I couldn’t do tricks that require an actual nose, and that was pretty much my main issue with it. I thought it was really fun for transition skating, tho!

Now I'm ridding a 9.25 Natas shaped board which has incredible nollie pop for some reason ( it has a tapered nose). Fair to say I have a varied quiver of boards to chose from, Now I'm thinking I should just press my own decks and truly go wild with experimenting with different shapes, wheelbases ect.

first off ur so impressive. uve done so many great things. very great channel. also with the backflips, i have always struggled doing standing backflips even though ive done a fair amount of springboard diving and am used to the backwards motion. I recently have been able to do a round off to backflip instead. it looks cooler and i think is easier. so practice kart wheels and landing on both hands and maybe the backflip progression will continue

To me, old-school fish-boards are supposed to be like half-way between a longboard and trick board. They're supposed to have bigger, wider wheels with a wider turning radius. They're supposed to coast and retain speed longer. They're supposed to be small enough to still be able to "thrash". Built for skating around the city and thrashing it up wherever you go.

Santa cruz Peter Dunn re-issued It's a bigger board I have an inch riser pads and wide independent trucks bones medium bushings spitfire classic bearing and Slime ball wheels. I use that board mainly for the vert because I'm learning that it's really easy to go up and down and for the park cuz I like riding the bowls. My other set up is a freestyle popsicle. Totally different because I'm riding freestyle tighter trucks and bushings and freestyle wheels... I definitely love old-school skateboards and that's cool there making a come back. Awesome channel.

I'm a tall guy with large feet. like size 18.... I feel like I need a big board like this. Am I wrong for thinking that? I skated when I was younger but I've always felt like the board I had was way small. To be honest, When I was young I thought they were all the same size. I want to get back into it and I don't want to get a board that doesn't fit. anyone got any suggestions? Should I be rocking a 10" board?

I always wanted to try one of those interesting 'newer' style decks that have like rounded sides and hard-angled noses, seems very interesting!

I'm old, today I can buy a lot of the things I couldn't as a kid. I grew up on everything Powell. I had the welinder, underhill ( r.i.p.). All hand me downs, mom got me my first set up, broke my collar bone, no more boards. I have several set ups. And really several are reissues, that I couldn't get as a kid. Got a Lucero on Indy, a caballero on Indys. I really try to use them. They're just beautiful.... But my everyday is an 8.0 blind, enjoi, or almost teamdeck. On 5.25 tensors.... I hate to say it. But there's a reason the popsicle has been the standard for 25, 30 years.... Kick pushing, grind for life...👊✌👍

I still skate shaped boads... if you get a reissue or a shape right before the Vallely barnyard, which was the predecessor to the popsicle stick, the noses were larger and you can pop a nollie.

You should try this with 1/2" risers and those oldschool 60mm wheels that all the 80's skaters used lol.

I first rode a 10 when i was a kid. In my teens Popsicles came into vogue. At 38 im on an 8.6 old-school form with a lip on the nose. Im old and technical street isnt viable with my busted joints so injust carve lines at the park and i like the feel.

I started skating in the 80s when all boards was that size but the shapes was always different. When the reissues started coming back out I started skating those again. They're so fucking fun. But I have the G BONES 65 mms they fly. I hope to see ya do more on that board in the future lol KEEP PUSHING

I feel like these old school boards can now be interpreted as ‘shaped boards’, like now it can be part of a skater’s preference whether he prefers a shaped board or regular popsicle stick shaped board

I tried a egg blunt shape by black label, and I’ve found my preference stays with a popsicle- the feel and ability to lock in is better on the modern shape imho

Pretty darn good on the old school deck right off the bat. I wish they would use the new school bolt pattern on all the old board reissues. My guess is that there are more people that would want to use trucks with the new pattern than ones using old school trucks. Indy makes 6 hole base plates. Surprisingly, the other manufacturers, like Thunder, mostly don't. I guess they just don't care about old school.

I would think that the main thing is it not being symmetrical would probably make a bigger difference for things like halfpipes or any nose tricks. It's a weird in-between board for longboarding and regular skateboards. I'd say that for anyone who really just wants to do tricks stick with a standard shaped skateboard, but those that want a smaller board for riding around this is a good option.
