What is hyperinflation and what is causing Venezuelans to starve?
Venezuela’s economic crisis has made headlines all over the world for the past few years. Hunger is widespread there. Unable to afford the small amount of food available in supermarkets, many Venezuelans have resorted to eating garbage to survive. Even zoo animals in Venezuela are starving according to a report by the Daily Mail, and people have been breaking into zoos to eat them. A recent survey found that the “food crisis has also created an education crisis, as more than 1 million children no longer attend school, mostly due to hunger and a lack of public services.” Moises Rendon and Mark L. Schneider of the Center for Strategic & International Studies provide a bleak assessment of Venezuela’s current situation, saying the country is suffering “an unprecedented man-made humanitarian crisis.” They say Venezuela resembles “a country at .. and notes some of its major social problems, including “extreme food and medicine shortages,” “rampant crimes in every city,” “constant electric blackouts,” and “looting and repression.” When you see and hear these stories, you can’t help but wonder what went wrong. How could a country that was once one of the most affluent countries in South America reach such a sorry state? One source of the misery in Venezuela is its out-of-control inflation, which we will examine in this episode of The Infographics Show, “Venezuelan Hyperinflation Explained.”
Before we discuss Venezuelan hyperinflation, let’s begin with a discussion of what hyperinflation is in general. Simply put, hyperinflation is very high, rapid, and continuous inflation. In a hyperinflation situation, the prices of goods and services in an economy quickly rise to a level so high that they become difficult to afford for most people. While experts cannot agree what that exact level is, economist Michael K. Salemi states that hyperinflation is generally used to “describe episodes when the monthly inflation rate is greater than 50 percent.” He gives the example that “at a monthly rate of 50 percent, an item that cost $1 on January 1 would cost $130 on January 1 of the following year.”

Venezuelan here. I left 5 years ago because I got a job with Aramco in Saudi Arabia. For me the only choice would be to leave the country. This also allows me to support my parents and my young brother. As some many others, I left my family, my house, my car and my memories. A few people of my family had passed away (my grandmothers for example). The worst is not the jokes of the comment section or even the people who I met everywhere I go (now living in Cairo) who make fun meanwhile they ask me about the situation (sometimes daily), the worst thing is that you don’t know if you will be able to get back in order to hug your parents again.

I remember hiding in my closet every time I heard a bomb because we couldn’t watch out the window, also making sound with the utensils as a way of protesting without putting me in danger every time they cut the light for more than 24 hours AND WATER.. I remember having to follow a calendar my mom made based on at what time the water and light was cut before so I could TRY to do things before it happened.. I remember leaving family members in a big line just to buy ONE item and later finally get it 3 or more hours later; I remember hearing how people disappeared every week, about the inflation, being scared of going out after 8:00PM, etc... and even tho I could say I was not rich but more on the wealthy side, I had to experience these things and others, so it’s bad for everyone who goes there, DO NOT GO THERE. I hope u, reader, never experience anything so bad in your life, please value the things you have. I hope your life goes well💗 I’m glad I left.

@@LamechOgum Honest question. How will the Venezuelan diaspora change anything? Even if they wanted to. Without an all out civil war or coup, what course of action can they do? I hate to say this, but the US also has no business providing aid or backing any opposition. What they did in El Salvador, Nicaragua, & Guatemala in the 80s was not pretty & created bigger problems we're still facing today. Most people will say, we can't repeat those mistakes. I hope Venezuela can peacefully come back to finding democratic freedoms, but man is it in a hole.

@promethium-145
@promethium-145 2 жыл бұрын
@@psygnozis The sanctions are NOT the main reason for Venezuela being poor. The two main reasons are: 1. Oil prices declining, which lead to brutal economic downturn, and welfare programs being harder to fund. 2. Currency is printed so often, that it's made worthless. The more currency in circulation, the less valuable each unit is. Also, as Venezuela was socialist, it consumed far more money than it generated. So when the oil money declined, their economy spiraled out of control rapidly.

@@Py16777216 wow, so many questions... I'll try to answer as much as I can: how is people getting paid? The govt rises the minimum wage every let's say 2 months, and it goes to something around 25-30$ but in a few weeks the purchase power of that wage goes to around 10$/month... It's unbelievable but some people manages it to survive with that, some employers give foods bags weekly to their workers so they don't walk away, sometimes a pack of 30 eggs every Friday is enough. But you see for eg how schools are losing their best teachers, they just go to do anything in Colombia or Ecuador. Other options are: some people work as freelancers and get paid in $ (PayPal or crypto) and earning around 100$ a month is a little bit better (but not enough), a few make around 300$ (which is the minimum wage in the region) and its ok, it's fair to mention that 300$ is enough because it's used mainly to buy groceries, gas is free, you fill a sedan 10 gals tank with less than 0.01$ so basically its free (and that's another huge mistake the govt does, but you realize there's no mistake, they like chaos it's part of the plan). The same happens with electricity, water and domestic gas, the payment hasn't changed in 2 years (in a country where the inflation rate is around 3 to 5% daily, imagine how ridiculous is the bill you can pay a year of all the domestic services with just 1$, but guess what? If something breaks, you must fix it yourself, the companies are state owned and don't even have tools to work with). If I think the govt has a plan? The sad true is: this mess is part of their plan. Complicated, yes. Hope is the last thing you lose. Many of my friends, relatives, people I studied with already left the country... I want to stay and see what happens, if a miracle happens, maybe someone get rid of them, but I'm losing my faith... If I think there could be a coup or something? Maybe. Who knows? But we don't know if the outcomes will be better or worse. I have instagram, we could talk better that way: alcidesyfedra

Because Venezuela is not socialist. They just have a bunch of ignorant thieves in the government that pretend to be socialists. What would you get if you put a bus driver like Maduro in the power that also had links to big corruption gangs? Well, certainly not a brilliant future. When capitalism fails or doesnt work so well, crooks like Chavez use the maxims of communism or socialism because they sound good and fair to the masses and when they get to the power they indeed, give away some money and free things to the poor so they stay there. But what these criminals have stolen is 100 times more than what they have given. It will be a never ending cycle. Next, after Maduro, a right wing candidate will come in place and if things dont work out, in 30 years again the left (far or moderate, depending on how bad was it) will rule and so on and so forth.

The problem with Capitalism. Cpitcapitalism is the idea of using currency for goods and services nothing more. Capitalism creates competition that benefits both consumer and the employer. So when you are at a market you can choose the best product that fits your budget. Often people will choose the more inexpensive products that does the same thing as it's more expensive competitors. Employers (Capitalist) do the same thing when it comes to purchasing labor (employees). Why pay $33 dollars an hour plus benefits in United States . When you can pay $3 an hour in Mexico with no benefits (GMC) . Capitalism is a race to the bottom. The employee that is willing to do the same work for less pay and benefits . Wins the employer purchase. In competition or in this case capitalism their is only one winner. It is why every major corporation in United States from Pharmaceuticals weapons contractors Amazon agriculture. All receive corporate welfare in some form or another to keep their businesses going. Socialism always has to save capitalism from its inadequacies. The capitalist are about to shit the bed. The first thing a capitalist does after they crash the economy is ask for a taxes payer bailout. You know socialism! Socialism is the only reason why capitalism exist today. There is not one transnational Corporation in the world that doesn't receive some sort of welfare.

@@jaketapper45 socialism does not save capitalism. Socialism saves failing businesses from being devoured by capitalism. In a true capitalist Market when those big companies crash they get bought up by other companies and that's the end of the story. However the government AKA socialism besides that certain companies are too big to fail so instead of capitalism naturally cleaning up after itself the failing business gets a second chance. The economy goes for a tailspin either way but in capitalism the CEOs go as broke as the janitors and in socialism the janitors lose their pensions and the CEOs lose their expense accounts.

first of all, nobody wants socialism in its purest form at all. when someone talks about socialism they usually mean democratic socialism which is basically a capitalistic country with a focus on some social welfare programs. just like Denmark, Sweden, Norway, etc. Venezuela didn't really have socialism but a combination of totalitarianism and poorly planned social programs. you can't just keep putting money into welfare programs without having fiscal discipline. their government failed not democratic socialism.

Great video, most of the broad issues are captured. A point omitted, however, is the massive currency black market induced by the monetary peg and restricted access to foreign currencies (dollars in particular) as per government policies. The pressure of the demand drove the black market prices to skyrocket which only worsened the inflation. Prices in shops soon became tied to the black market rates rather than the official rate as most products were imported and therefore paid for in dollars. Otherwise, good stuff as always!

-America has had Socialism for the Rich/Corporatism for much of it's history. Trump took it to the next level . -"Until you run out of other people's money" Except its the Capitalists (such as Bezos & the Waltons) who are using Socialism more than anybody to subsidize their workforce. While CEOs get to keep buying more mansions & yachts, the taxpayers have to pay the welfare benefits of their employees. -Pinochet (Right-Wing hero) made the same mistake Chavez made with borrowing from other countries & burying his country with debt & inflation. Not to mention he later had to raise taxes to keep his country from collapse. -Venezuela is also under heavy embargo from America. Try putting Singapore, Hong Kong, or free market country under total embargo & see if they turn out better. -Rampant corruption is responsible for most of Venezuela's problems. Trump is the most pro-corruption president ever. He stuffed the govt with Goldman Sachs bankers, NeoCon war criminals, rich psychopaths, & corporate giants. He surpasses all past presidents at sheer corruption, bribery, instantly provable lies, & conflicts of interest. -Guess which American political movement is the most anti-corruption? the Progressives. They wanna get corporate PAC money out of politics. Dinesh & Ben Shapiro have openly defended money in politics.

What Manduro does to Venezuela has nothing to do with socialism - it is just terrible populist policy of a man who does not have the mental capacity for the job. Other countries have also been hit by the dropping oil price too but most of them have managed to adapt.
