89% of the world’s population now live in countries with falling rates. In the U.S., marriage has declined by 60% since the 1970s, while median age for first marriages has increased for both men and women.
“There are a couple of big factors here in play. One major factor is the changing economy”, said Brad Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at University of Virginia.
The phenomenon affects many countries in the world but it’s most pressing in east and south Asia, where marriage and childbirth are highly correlated.
“Governments all over the world are worried because of economic implications”, said Dr Leng Leng Thang of National University of Singapore.
The decline of marriage is turning into a demographic crisis for Japan which is the world’s third largest economy and home to the world’s oldest population.
And a similar problem is troubling authorities in China, which registered the fewest marriages in 2022 since public records began.
“By 2050, China's working population will be reduced by 10%, and not enough babies will be born to fill that gap. The dependent population, those who reach retirement age, will double” warned Dr Ye Liu from King’s College London.
Watch the video above to learn what causes increasing number of couples around the world to opt out of marriage.

Experienced divorce attorney here. Marriage is simply too big a risk in modern times. Divorce and family court can derail your life, even if you didn’t do anything wrong. Better to live your best life and do the things that bring you joy. You can still have terrific relationships without inviting state laws into your life and finances.

That’s a very accountable attitude. Building with someone who is equally accountable and matches your values is key. Today, men are quite afraid of women with their lists of to do’s, love can get very lost when one partner takes over everything, leaving the other to follow or give all the decisions to the one who has the lists of goals and objectives, which leaves the partner cold & left out. It’s tough these days for men to marry.

Frankly, imagine if someone subtracted the beer and playstation and instead read books freely obtained from the library or via inexpensive on-line venders. Sat in a park and drank tea/coffee (maybe even made at home rather than an expensive coffee house). Imagine also if these single people volunteered through local church groups or community organizations instead of ocupying themselves with streaming services and social media. A much less expensive life filled with far more creativity and social interaction.

My wife through false allegations of child abuse tried to win divorce and put me into prison. She won temporary custody. After 3.5 years the court cleared me of initial accusation, but now my children who used to love me don't want to see me at all. The ex spouse didn’t get any punishment for false allegations. It cost me a lot of money to fight in courts to clear my name. Too sad the system is one sided. I lost all my faith in justice. The social workers from department of children who initially believed all words without any proof didn’t lose their jobs either. They ruined my relationship with children.

So If I Imagine myself having kids, I'd have to work twice as hard to provide for their needs. If people can't support a family, it's wise not to marry. I mean really, why make your own and other people's lives miserable. I'm from West Bengal in India. Most families here, have the mindset that one must marry irrespective of their income. People are convinced and pressurized into getting married. Not marrying is almost viewed as being abnormal. :(

For love. Back in the olden days, women had to marry to live because she could not work a job and keep the money. Flash forward to 2024, we can work, go to school and better ourselves, have an actual home, purchase out own cars, establish businesses, DON'T have children just because we married. Men have their own reasons not to marry and they are reflected in these comments as well!
