The origins of nastiness in other people can be deeply hard to fathom, especially if we have done nothing to them. The answer is strangely and consolingly simple…

“It happens pretty much all the time: a small jabbing comment, a joke at our expense amidst a group of old friends, a line of sarcasm, a sneering assessment, a provocative comment on the internet.
These things hurt a lot - more than we’re ever allowed to admit. In the privacy of our minds, we search for explanations, but anything satisfying and soothing is usually hard to come by. We’re just left to puzzle at the casual inhumanity that circulates all around us - and suspect that perhaps it’s we who are, somewhere deep down, to blame for falling victim to it.”

It's simply because being nasty has become socially acceptable. People even admire nasty people given that it's falsely perceived as "power" and confidence. In addition being nasty is rarely reprimanded. Our movies, social media and music are all filled with nasty people, behaviors, practices, ect...yet most people are not appalled, simply due to those things mentioned above

Women marry the men who have no class. They're attracted to this kind of behavior. They see it as "primal". Others see it as having no class. The sad thing is these women expect more from these kind of men but they never see the improvement in these men. Like when white women marry black men to show "diversity". Bruh.... 🙂‍↔️

I think some people who don't stoop down to the level of their haters are mature people who usually focus on bringing a solution and doing something for the greater good. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. There was a huge amount of hatred and racism, but he used that as fuel to bring about change. Or I even read about a teenager who was bullied who created an anti-bullying awareness program in their school and created a better environment for all students. They build castles out of the bricks people threw at them.

Absolutely. When one is happy they don't have a desire to lash out at others. People who lash out are suffering and think that it makes them feel better to do that but for deep seated happiness, being mean is not the answer. Only kindness and compassion will bring you real joy. I just feel sorry for people who hurt others as they are hurting themselves.

Seeing a person who is constantly hurting you as "someone sad inside" is dangerous. Many people remain in abusive relationships because of this theory. But there are people who are aggressive or they have a personality disorder and no empathy for others, and that's why they are nasty.

In this world materialism and fame rules, but, I have found myself in Buddhism, having some!, not always really great Day's where I am just so so grateful to live in Canada, but knowing it would be great to if I had to live elsewhere!, I just think about what I have, and if I have the desire to have something, I have found myself in a different mindset, I usually find any desire That's unreasonable for my really not necessarily, I start thinking about " I must live in the moment " if I am thinking of what I can have in the future it just takes away my happiness, but I am not perfect and have to practice with that, but when I'm living in the moment, I think about all the fancy houses and guys who are driving expensive cars with really beautiful Women and just thinking to myself " You have not found the key to happiness " Meditation brings calmness, desire brings stress!

@@xoxomangakcorxoxo That generally isn't the case. It's always best to look at both sides. Hardly any one is mean without a proper cause. To think that people are mean simply because they want to, stems either from a selfish form of thinking, or lack of constructive thought thaf answers as to why they( the mean people) did that. I mean, since we don't know anything about our enemies, it's generally so easy to think that they're mean because they want to, instead of thinking that they're mean because they're a bundle of insecurities that lock themselves from others with being mean so as to stave off others who could catch them off being "weak" and vulnerable

Don't take it personally. When others are attempting to cause you to suffer, it is merely because they are suffering. It is because they are jealous of you. or they might be afraid of you. Therefore, taking their actions seriously, would only cause you to partake in their suffering. it would mean that you are what is causing their suffering, when the root of it has nothing to do with you. don't think you are the cause of their suffering. don't think they are trying to make you suffer, because of what goes inside YOU. but it is more so what goes inside of THEM.

This reminds me of my older sister and my mom. Never happy, never content, always looking for glory and revenge. Always ridiculing everyone and everything around them and placing themselves on a very high platform and handing out negative remarks and death stares whenever possible. These are the type of women that cannot laugh at themselves or smile at a stranger or make a compromise. I do not take pity on them or try to understand them. They are born this way and choose to be this way and they are miserable yes. But to forgive someone who does not want forgiveness is nonsense. Let them be the laughing devils they wish to be. Goodness does not make alliances or exceptions for the bent and the twisted. Forgiveness is not a free hand out; you actually have to ask and work towards for it. Don't pity evil. Like many of the people in the comments say, there are good people going through hell on earth and still find the decency to be good. Cheers to them.

Well, I think that we all have to forgive at some point, not because if we say sorry that the mean person is going to become more good and kind, but because holding hate inside yourself is not good. We must forgive, because if we keep the anger inside it's gonna consume us. That's one of the reason we should forgive even if the "bad" person didn't apologize.

+Blake Daimond I believe that Jesus forgave the entire world of its sinners but I believe that God and all of his magnificent angels will come to save the saints and the innocents. And forgiveness will not be handed out where it is not due. Until this day I will forgive those who seek forgiveness or seek peaceful company with those who seek peace but I will not sympathise with evil sorrowful minds when they reveal themselves or their envies. I will not hate myself or hate my love for goodness. The devil is alive, he is just a fallen angel still under God's law looking for rules to bend and weak victims to plunge into his hell. Justice is beauty. Cruelty is ugly. And I only love beautiful things. I am not Jesus and I will never pretend to be. But I am also not the devil's advocate and will never pretend to be. Thanks for your comment though. It's nice to have replies.

Yalanchi Swiss Sometimes you just have to cut people out of your life, especially if it’s a parent you don’t get along with, and you know you are making them miserable too. What choice do you have if you want to talk things over, but they’re not much interested, and all they’ve done most of their lives is scream and yell at you and judged you with their short tempers? It wears you down, and knocks the wind out of you, and they’re not listening anyway.

While I agree heavily, I also think a lot of nastiness springs from power games. People harass those who seem weaker than them. In part to reinforce their power and in part to test if they have power against the harassed. My circle only gets smaller and smaller over time. At first people act like they're your friend but their hidden motives begin to surface, their behaviour changes, they can't accept you have something that they don't so they start becoming bitter and nasty. It's like people struggle to be happy for others but it isn't healthy to compare as we all have different lives. Once you find out someone's toxicity RUN for the hills as far as you possibly can and never return. They will feed off your pain and suffering, it is what they want, they will spread rumours, be slanderous, plan evil towards you. Back away, place boundaries even if it is a family member, respect yourselves. They have the problem and issues, no need for problems and issues coming to you, just live in peace. 🙏🏼

Some people are wired in such a way that they give precedence to instinct and value base desires and biological requirements over a sense of being fair or only operating out of necessity. When evil people (secondary, can become 'permanent') are made it's because they've experienced losing 'enough' zero-sum games against selfish people. In certain situations (long-term deprivation/hunger etc.) people will value survival over fairness to get what they need. At a certain threshold, behaving like that will become habit (for people that are predisposed) as it appears that approach is more likely to payoff (short term) in some capacity than to risk going without. Evil passes to people like a virus through their actions toward one another and as the video suggests, effectively stems from fear. There may be more to karma but even if it's only true in the sense that actions will influence people which will in turn act under the influence of the actions preceding them eveyone should treat people well, even if only to influence their chains of interactions positively in case you interact with them in the future (long term payoff).

What he discusses are traits of the type 1 sociopath. They are camouflaged among us- they cannot feel love, remorse, guilt, and empathy and they prey on those who can feel these emotions. They secretly hunger for power and control and secretly loves to use, bully, humiliate, and hurt others. Charming, brilliant, powerful are traits. So are controlling, manipulative, and using. They can be the teacher who humiliates her students, the preacher who crosses boundaries, the mean boss, and the cheating spouse. They blame everyone but themselves when things do not go their way. Type 1 sociopaths rarely do anything illegal (immoral yes- illegal, no). Domestic violence, rape, stealing, conning, and abusing children are traits of sociopaths and psychopaths. If you love deeply and have great compassion, you most likely have a type 1 sociopath preying on you. Once you know the traits and you can recognize these traits in the bully in your life, you can love and pray for them, but you will love them with strong boundaries and from a distance if necessary. You will know they secretly like to compete with you and want to see you fall. Being wise as serpents is knowing the traits of the type 1 sociopath and sociopaths among us. This was an interesting video. Whenever someone is nasty, they are displaying sociopathic traits.

This explanation doesn't really satisfy me. :D Nasty people may not feel very good, but I don't think they always suffer very much either. At least the nastiness doesn't tell how much they suffer, because a person who suffers a lot could be not nasty at all and someone who only suffers only a little bit could be very nasty. I think this video makes things too simple and there could be a lot more behind nastiness than this. It can't be only suffering, even though there would always be SOME suffering behind a nasty person, it doesn't explain why they're nasty, because I think almost everyone suffers a little bit (some even a lot and still they're not nasty) and you can't tell how nasty someone is based on how much they suffer. The idea of the assumed suffering being a punishment in itself doesn't sound "logical", because it could only be a little suffering, hardly a punishment, if the nastiness is huge. I guess it could be pleasant to think that if someone is rude to us, it means they suffer and the suffer explains the rudeness. Because that way we get our secret revenge without having to go as low as them and we get an explanation we like because we don't have to think the other alternative: maybe they were rude but also honest about something that we don't want to know about ourselves, and we don't want to know how they see us.
@courtneyharris1006

good point. its sucks that there are plenty of violatile people who seem to flourish and watever put them like that does not seem to hurt them. most narcissist dont have the self awareness to kno how awful they are and their selfish toxicity towards people,but they will be perfectly content with a life of materialism and pleasure pursuit without ever looking inward. and why should they when it seems preferable to be that way in society. so although these people may have "scars"that influences their toxic personalities in present,i wouldnt go as far to say they're "suffering" which is way less satisfying to hear yes, but just seems to be the wat things manifest.
@rloach067
@rloach067 7 жыл бұрын
people deal with suffering and trauma in general in different ways. Whenever someone's will is stripped off, they will do whatever they can to take that power back. Some ways of doing that is feeling helpfull and being nice, others are selfharm, since you feel like you know exactly your limits, and that is your power. Others blame everyone else besides themselves, and harm them to warn them they shouldn't try to do the same to them, and to feel like they truly are unstoppable. None of this reactions can justify themselves just because they were the cause of horrible events imparted on the person, but this are all just defense mechanism of people that haven't healed. They need help and compassion, but that doesn't deny that they are and should be responsible for the actions they make, good or bad. also, people are different, and get hurt and suffer in different ammounts. In regards of emotion, you can't really completely objectly say that some actions or circumstances hurt everyone more or less. It may seem like that person doesn't suffer at all or doesn't deserve to complain because of "some people have it worse", but that mentality is horribly egoistic and since you can literally say that to anyone, is incredibly illogical as a form of reasoning to stop someone from feeling what they are
@sngscratcher
@sngscratcher 7 жыл бұрын
+Huonous "This explanation doesn't really satisfy me." I think people are nasty because they have not yet "grown up" on an emotional/spiritual level. And many of them don't even realize that "growing up" is an option. So their thoughts remain primarily on themselves, with little regard for the feelings or needs of others. "Growing up," spiritually, is always about "other." Cheers.

I agree more with you than the video. It's not just that they can, but also because they don't have to get along with others in order to live their lives. Interactions over the Internet can be negative and then you never have to interact with that same person again. Face to face, people often act much more civil with each other because you know you might see that same person again and don't want to make it uncomfortable. Or maybe we are all just learning how to be jerks from each other thanks to all of that behaviour being tolerated and sometimes even celebrated on the Internet.

And also consider that this fear could be the result of a trauma because at some point they received the evil and they do evil exactly for the reasons the video says "To reverse the relationship of power".

I suggest that, after you discuss something and you make a good suggestion, that you send a short email to whoever is involved saying, "Just to summarize where we got with our discussion. My idea was that we do XXX. I also valued Bob's suggestion that we do YYY, and Annabel's idea that we do ZZZ. Do we need another meeting to finalize which idea to go with? Would tomorrow afternoon at 3pm suit everyone?" That gives a record of the discussion so far. If she later goes round saying that she was the one that thought of XXX, you could send an email attached to the previous one, saying something like "I think it's great that we're going with idea XXX. I feel pleased that I was able to contribute that idea - see email below. Should we review how it is going next week e.g. at our usual general meeting?" When she makes someone cry, you might choose to say something like, "Oh, Sarah is feeling upset about that remark. I just want to say that I don't agree with those criticisms of Sarah. I find her very pleasant to work with." Or if she says something nasty to you, you might say, "The way you said that just then is quite upsetting, Mary." and then don't take it any further. She will pretend that she doesn't care, but your style of calmly mentioning that it's upsetting will encourage others to also say on other occasions, "Too harsh, Mary. I'm not feeling strong enough to deal with those harsh words today." or something similar. Quietly, calmly, people can keep making it clear that the bullying is not OK.

In fact, the more highly one thinks of self, the more pain and humiliation he feels deep down. He deceives himself with thoughts of grandeur in order to suppress the truth of his pitiful existence. Once they get in their 60's/70's/80's, their body doesn't work the way it used to (either menopause or achy joints). They become more negative, bitter, sour, vindictive and controlling, especially if they feel their "power" is being taken away. They suck the life out of the room, and instead of aging into mentors/role models, they become desperate for total control of everything/everyone around them. Younger people/leaders piss them off, because they begin to realize that time is not on their side: they have one foot in the grave. Dealing with the aging/elderly narcissist is tricky, because misery loves company. They age horribly and rapidly: all of that negativity, hatred, anger, and their need for control eventually catches up with them. Not to mention all of the health issues that are brought on from the stress they put themselves through: it all starts from within. I recommend keeping your distance respectfully, or zero contact for the truly deranged/malignant ones that can't be reasoned with.

I agree for the most part. But forgiveness doesn't do anything. In fact, the most twisted and evil of psychopaths are looking for forgiveness. They want their actions to be permissible. They will just keep manipulating people into forgiveness. The only things you can do is keep away from the evil, develop an immunity to it and allow it to destroy itself. Or punishment it if you are in a strong position to. That's it.

Best thing is to progressively reduce the amount of people one has to deal with as much as one can afford this rarest of luxuries. However, it is becoming increasingly hard to carve out a place of solitude in a world of increasing population and decreasing privacy, and the increasingly inconvenient coercion of work-places to "enhance customer service experience", via forcing us to smile when we would rather cry, talk when we would rather think, and so forth. In case we are forced by our lovely system of mutual exploitation to be more amongst the zombies we would have a palate for, there is a backup solution: see people as npc`s capable of suffering, but with only a couple of cross-culturally shared personality subroutines, a collection of learned habituations - sociological marvels of walking manufactured one-dimensionalities, walking designer-suits and marketing-abominations, it helps filtering them out. Its a dog`s world, cats better keep in the shadows, it is there after all, where other felines worthy of a brief exchange of ideas lurk. Let the mindless barking of the masses become part of the background, like the unaware, destructive forces of nature they are. That way you can hide in plain sight.
