Today I am tackling the age old question... why are people still buying the Canon T2i. A 12 year old camera that I'm surprised still works. Well it's because it might be a tiny bit good actually...
Some of the following product links are affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

My Canon 550d has now 12 years and it's still usable. I take it when shooting non-commercial work and it's good for photo. Twelve years ago video was great, especially when you used MagicLantern, it was complete game changer in it's time. You should check it out for OG Canon 2010 Indie filmmaking experience.

My first DSLR was a T3i in 2011. Essentially a T2i with a fully articulated screen. As I was interested in birds in flight, I quickly purchased a 7D for it's superior AF and continuous shooting, but the T3i remained my "go to" for everything else. It was awesome and I was very fond of it. A few years ago, I gifted to to my great-niece and we did some shooting together. It's just an awesome, awesome starter camera. Loads of fun and easy to learn on.

Another great, thought-provoking video. Made me think of my Fujifilm X10 point & shoot that I bought used in 2012 for $350. I was originally attracted to it because it looked like a classic Leica. It has a 2/3-inch, 12-megapixel EXR-CMOS sensor and advanced EXR processor; RAW shooting and in-camera RAW processing, a f2.0 wide-angle and f2.8 telephoto (28-112mm) bright Fujinon 4x optical manual barrel zoom lens. No, it doesn't have a huge sensor, but the zoom is great and the images produced are superlative. Because of the size, it's always in my backpack. The Fujifilm X10 is the perfect street camera...even better than their X100 series because of the fast, tack-sharp 2.0-2.8 zoom.

This was one of my first digital cameras when I started shooting professionally. Ive shot layouts for Muscle and Fitness, GQ, FHM and several other magazines back in the day. Still use it from time to time when I want to use my Holga lens and do some low-fi looks or when I just need product shots clothing companies are using on their social media. Put a good lens on it an its a steal for $100 these days.

If its your first camera, get a nifty-50 50mm lens. Its almost impossible to take a bad photo with that once you wrap your head around the fact that, like all prime lenses, you zoom using your legs lol. Its got a fairly shallow DOF, but the Bokeh (Think blurriness of things out of focus, but tasteful) on 50mm lenses is divine.

If you really want to unlock what this camera can do, the magic lantern stuff is essential, it unlocks a lot of really useful stuff including RAW (though, be careful with that, you can overheat it, the CPU on it just doesnt cope well with long shoots doing that, though modern fast SD cards make it possible, and hey ask the high end pros about RED cameras and heat lol.) and fix that autogain guff as well as letting you black balance, focus peaking, zebra stripes etc for really calibrating that video output. And for photography, it has some fun stuff like HDR multi exposure photography.

I bought two for astrophotography. They came with the 75-300 mm lens, the 18-55 mm lens and another I cannot remember. Two batteries. I'm going to use one for astrophotography which means I need to mod it and the only thing I really need to buy is a shutter control cable and possibly mini HDMI. All in I am $350 with the purchase. Considering the Canon 75-300 mm lens is $200 brand new I think I did alright.

I have two T2i and until two weeks ago, I had hadn't taken a video of anything since I had a little Samsun Hi8 video recorder 20 years ago, and I was very pleased with the results the T2i gave. Autofocus wasn't a real problem for me as I was using a tripod and not using the whole range of the lenses. The built in microphone picked up lots of wind noise unfortunately. The picture was nothing for an amateur to complain about. Now if your used to better cameras and gear, it's probably borderline crap to you, or if you're looking to blog or do cinematic work, choose something better than the Rebel line of cameras.

I'd hold off on the T2i and go for an SL1 which you can grab for ~$150. I bought my 2013 EOS Rebel SL1/100D in 2021 after shooting for almost ten years with a Nikon D3100, which I loved. I got beautiful images with my Nikon kit lenses until I lost my whole system when traveling in south America. After that, the Canon 100D was the most available option for my budget. My Rebel SL1/100D hasn't slowed down my photography one bit. To solve the dynamic range problem early Canon models have with washed out skies in outdoor shooting, I rely on ND and CPL filters to keep the color saturation and blue of the sky without losing the rest of my shot. For any other image challenge, whenever people ask me whether they need a better camera body, I tell them to put their money into their glass instead. It continues to serve me well. I shoot mostly street, nighttime, and concerts, so I need wide apertures and I don't want to mess with ISO noise in post-processing. The ISO can be a limitation on this camera, but it's easy to solve with a couple changes. For lowlight photography, upgrading my lenses to faster apertures were the game changer. I don't need to use extreme high ISO because I have Sigma Art series f/1.4 primes at 30, 50 and 85mm focal lengths, plus a great little Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 zoom. Additionally, the Sigma Art series makes two absolutely killer crop sensor zoom lenses that beat the pants off the similar Canon L series lenses and for several hundred dollars less. If you want to shoot mostly with zoom, their 18-35mm f/1.8 and 24-70 f/2.8 are the best glass you can put on any Canon APS-C camera. If you can't afford the Art series, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 that came before it is still a great lens, and Samyang makes a beautiful MF 85mm f/1.4 that you can grab used for ~$150. Christopher Frost has done really solid lens reviews on Sigma, Canon, Tamron and Samyang lenses for Canon which have informed my buys. I'm also having tons of fun with the Lensbaby Optic Swap lens system (available in 30, 50 and 85mm focal lengths depending on which optic). Their original Lensbaby series are pretty inexpensive now at second-hand prices and you can get beautiful effects that make your photography really unique. MPB is the best of all the secondary markets for camera gear. Plus you get their six-month warranty. Never buy new. There is no reason to eat all the depreciation on new gear when people are constantly upgrading and trading out their systems. You can get high-end glass at second-hand prices through them without any of the risk you have when buying from, say, eBay sellers.

Your videos are very well-made! The reviews of both the t2i and the a5000 were very helpful to me, but I have a hard time choosing between them. Assuming the price being similar, which one would you recommend for use as a webcam or just youtube in general?
@aChairLeg
@aChairLeg 2 жыл бұрын
At that point it's mostly up to preference imo. I'm more familiar with Canon and have more Canon lenses so I would probably go for the t2i. The a5100 is for sure a more video focused camera and would be great paired with some cheap vintage lenses. Plus the adjustable screen can be a major help, especially if you're filming yourself.

Just a correction, the recording bitrate is something about 48mbps, according to Canon's website, it records at 330MB/min, which converting to "mbps" units, turns to 48mbps the math is: 330 ÷ 60 × 8 if someone ever wants me to explain the math I explain, just ask

The 24mm is a solid lens, I owned one for a while. I'm just not sure if it's wide enough for vlogging. If possible I would purchase it to test and return if it doesn't suit your needs. A basic canon 18-55 on ebay, at least here, is easily under $100 if the 24mm isn't wide enough. Other than that the only other option I can think of would be a wide vintage M42 mount lens.

Probably outside of Sigma 18 to 35 1.8, best standard zoom 2.8 zoom lens for cropped cameras on all other camera brand except Canon; on Canon the Canon 17 to 55 2.8 is still sharper. Too bad most super sharp lens are not taken full advantage on most if not all Canon DSLR's because of their inhouse built in sensors and refuse to design one without aa filter.
