Why are people still trucking when you can easily make 80K at a 9 to 5 job? 🤔

Let me be clear, there are some really great paying 9 to 5 jobs. I only compared the two jobs because of the comment. Trucking isn’t for everyone. Some people prefer a 9 to 5 and it’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Let me know your thoughts.

These are facts. I have a masters and dont even make $80k a year. Keep trucking & add them endorsements fellas. Didnt even mention the added hurdles of memorizing answers in interviews, perfect resume requirements etc etc

Credentials are becoming less and less important nowadays in this country. I can’t speak for other countries. Most of the time it’s who you know, and if the person making the hiring decision like you or not. I have a prime example to give but I don’t want to get political on here.

When you go to your 9-5 you play this game. You have your messy co-worker You have the boss that an azz hole You have the co-worker that thinks they’re the boss You have the lazy co-worker You have the kiss-azz You have the one co-worker that has the high school mentality You have the co-worker gunning for your spot You have the flirtatious “freak off” co-worker You have the “snitch” co-worker You have to deal with all of these personalities and play them to your advantage. The keeping to yourself can make you the opposition at work. In trucking you only have to deal with your manager and dispatcher. If that! You will be mentally rested from playing that game. That’s why you hear “freedom” a lot in trucking. Once you have had a taste of making money without the politics at a job working with other people, you’ll never go back. 80k sounds good but for your mental, what will you have to compensate for it? Making someone else’s company rich while they look at you as a disposable asset? This is just one example. A Job is JUST OVER BROKE Trucking is a gateway to entrepreneurship. This is also why trucking is being attacked the way it is. They “want a nation of workers and not a nation of thinkers!”

I actually rather deal with the office politics than having no life. You gonna deal with the BS no matter your field. At the end of the day, those folks are going home to family and friends, they can balance work and life. I just came off OTR for 2 years, got myself in the oils fields and have a taste of life. On my way out the industry now before crap really hits the fan. Hope you all are educating yourselves and learning new skills. Only a matter of time before you all are replaced.the time you put into trucking, especially OTR and Regional (working 24 hours a day) vs what you get in return… you’re making minimum wage.

I've been driving since 2008, best investment I ever made. Everybody I know went off to college or joined the military. I'm not a 9 to 5 type of guy, I love the autonomy of being able to drive, listen to my music, take my breaks whenever I want. Nobody is micromanaging me, I drive as much or as little as I want as long as my load is on time, nobody cares. I barely ever have to talk to my dispatcher; we're on the phone probably a few times a month and I make more money than a lot of my college friends. One of the top earners at my company just made $220k last year...and I'm learning from him what I can do better to boost my earnings but, I'm still taking home plenty now. The money is there in Trucking, you just gotta be hungry enough to get it. But, it's not for everyone. Just like we love driving and having our autonomy, some people love sitting behind a desk and having people hover over their shoulder.

Trucking is more of an independent job and more of a hustle. You get what you put in, that's why I like it plus you get a bi-weekly paycheck in a week. I went to school for Dry Van and ended up doing Flatbed and wasn't expecting to love it so much. A dude today told me today I made him go double check his load because of how tight my chains were on mine and I'm a female. Securing my loads gives me a work out and then its driving and singing in my truck after that. 😅 I also still get to go to college online. When I'm parked I do my school work.

I’ve NEVER been at “real” peace on a job. I got my CDL and I’m at peace. I just told my wife this today. Just do your job. Wake up ON TIME. Deliver. Park and take a break. Be cool and NOT AGGRESSIVE to your Fleet management and dispatch, and your good. Keep your truck clean, do all your pre and post trips for DOT, and that’s pretty much it. Will some days be weird? Few and in between. Long as you have a backbone and know how to control your emotions, it all good. Peace y’all.

Great statement. I have an associates degree, a bachelors degree, and certification in law enforcement. It was NOT easy!! 4 years of college, 6 months of the academy, not to include the 6 months of hiring process, interviews, Psych test, polygraphs, physical test, medical exams, only to get hired for $17.10 an hour. I worked in law enforcement for 12 years and it took me that long to make $40/hour. It took me more than 10 years in law enforcement, OT, call outs, politics within the agency, etc., to make 80k. I'm getting my CDL in three weeks. Should have done this a LONG time ago!

Most people go into trucking for the freedom and not necessarily not so much about the money. I’m one those people. I hated my regular 9 to 5 job, same routine, sitting in front of a computer for hours, dealing with people. I was miserable in a 9 to 5 job. Since I got into trucking I’m more happier, I just love being on the road in my own personal space. Not everything is about money. Find your happy place and stick with it.

One of the biggest things people aren’t picking up on is the state of the economy. As a local food service driver I don’t feel the effects of the inflated economy nearly as bad as someone who is in a 9-5 making $50,000-$80,000 plus a year and I have a household of 6. These 9-5 gigs will get rid of you faster than you can blink and then you’re stuck struggling even more while hoping your lack of “credentials“ resume will land you something paying close to what you made before. No person is safe from being laid off and no company is safe from closing their doors but I’m thankful my job is pretty close to being recession proof and that comes from trucking, not a 9-5…

As far as the 9 to 5, easily making 80K, it depends on what a person considers as easy. I make more than that and a lot of days, (ok, most days), I don't work anywhere near 8 hrs. That's a long day for me. I contract as a field tech, mainly installing GPS and cameras into fleet vehicles. We're branching into other things now, such as installing monitors and new gas guards on propane tanks (5 mins for each install), and installing emergency pull cord devices in assisted sernior living facilities. I get paid per install, so overtime isn't a thing, and I wouldn't want that. On average, $35/hr at the low end, as much as $150/hr at the high end. My woman makes over $100K in telecom. I left telecomm bc I couldn't stand the corporate environment anymore. Neither of us have degrees, but we both were in the Air Force and both got electronics training there. As a contractor in a tech field, you can make that type of money $80K and it's not difficult. Only the summer time sux, and I'll probably take off this August bc I hate the heat. I take jobs I want, no boss. The money is out there.

I’ve done all reefers tankers dry vans flat bad and even hauling gasoline to gas stations they all pay the same average $50,000 to 68,000 you can make up to a 100,000 but it’s gonna require lots overtime 12 hours a day in some cases 6 days a week, I’m local I pulled my 80k working five days a week 8.5 hours a day so basically that’s my 9 to 5

They had to look it up that’s how you know they’re just taking out their butt. The only way to make that type of money is drug dealing or being in a lot of debt from school or the debt free thing which a truck driving. I’ve done it all & i chose truck driving. It’s limitless potential for money

It's so many BS degrees that doesn't amount to much but it's a good amount that will land you some serious cash for life without the depression and loneliness of trucking. My cousin and her husband have 4 trucks, my cousin has started having anxiety attacks, they’ve had 8 truckers, 3 wrecked their trucks, then maintenance is extremely high, they save money because they live below their means but they are looking for his brothers to join the business because it’s hard, she said when they had dedicated lanes ( I don’t know what that means) she said their life was so much better and they both made over 80k so that’s 160 and they live in a trailer, they trying but it’s taking a toll on their marriage. Commission sales jobs & nepotism are the only "easy" ways that immediately come to mind to be making $80k + a year. People who are good at selling products especially high ticket things like furniture or appliances, cars, etc.. can make that working sales for companies. And with nepotism I'm sure a lot of people making $80k+ with no degree or certifications could just be locked in through connections which is fine too. We need to create opportunities for our people.

We seen millions be sent home in 2020 where trucking didn’t stop. My family didn’t feel that financial guy punch that many got hit with. I’m glad you mentioned ROI. I spent 65 bucks in total to get my Cdl. All I had to do was work for the company that trained me for a year. That first year I made 72k and had the time of my life. It’s hard enough finding a Trucking job that will pay you 80 K. I’m five years in and pretty much only have made lower 60s. The only job that I know of were you can invest about $5000 and within five years make at least 60 to 70 K, and be in a union working only four days a week 10 hours a day, as a flight dispatcher. I got my dispatch license in 2019. It’s a really easy job, but very safety sensitive. And it can be very boring at times just watching Weather and making sure that things are legal. The hardest part about that job for me was I couldn’t survive on $500 a week. Going from trucking and making a minimum of about 1000, at $500 a week and being paid every other week was brutal. I wouldn’t mind going back to it, but I would need some sort of strategy to survive 3 to 5 years at a regional making crap pay. Once I did my time there, I could go to a major.

Was it easy? I mean….i had to study for that certification for about 5 months and I’m a bad tester so it took my 2 tries but it also wasn’t that hard. With that being said, IT is definitely not my passion after these 3 years. Currently doing my research in truck driving even tho I know it’s gonna be a big pay cut from $83k. Weighing the pros and cons overall, I just can’t stay here at this 9-5 doing something I have no enjoyment or passion for when it’s literally a job you have to study every year for to keep up with the field.
