One of the biggest strengths is their population class, as they are recruited out of the proletarii, the roman 3rd class. That means you are getting a unit with stats that rival noble units, but can be easily recruited/reinforced in almost any region.

They are basically a reward for beating Carthage with your polybian legion, which can get pretty difficult. After that, its pretty much smooth sailing thanks to the amazing marian units.

Litetally. The main issue you face is one of logistics most of the time. Replenishing is an absolutely pain in the ass unless you heavily use auxelia (which I did) Once these bad boys come in though, they're without question the back bone

The veteran legionaries and eagle/first cohorts come from the 2nd class though. I think praetorians come from the 1st, but you don't really need to recruit them as they are outclassed by the eagle/first cohorts.

@@rory6860 the romans had won against the diadochi without professionals. And the diadochi used levied troops, too. Legionaries were from a later time and professional soldiers. It was their job to be soldiers. That's why they were so good.

In my playthrough I started as Baktria, and rome as literally taken over two thirds of the map. I was bogged down fighting the Eastern factions and nomads when I noticed Rome was literally on the other side of them.

​@@remembertotakeshowerspleas355 Currently Doing a run as Maurya, Sent an Emissary to the West to see what was going on, they were already in firm control of Africa with Carthage surviving in Sardinia with a single settlement in Iberia, now they have a firm grip on the Balkans and the Greek heartlands and are now invading the Lusitanian Kingdom, the Anatolian Greeks as well as everyone else in Asia minor went to me and The Ptolemys for protection, a pretty refreshing dynamic to be honest.

Man as an Iranian I'm usually playing as parthians (obviously 😂) well their early game is shitttt so it takes a loooong time for me to conquer iranian plateau (playing as iranians empires that's a MUST) but I never see rome conquering two third of the map by the time I reach Mesopotamia and syria ,as many others say, man I'd love to fight a super strong and gigantic Roman empire , guess I'm starting a new campaign 😂.

Number 1, the reason they are OP is because they are units with elite like stats but come from pop 3 (proletarii) and spammable. They can also replenish much easier due to this reason.

Its their versatility. They can go toe to toe with almost anything. Anything thats in the same tier or lower they will destroy, elite units that outclass them will get out of a fight with them quite mauled or very heavily damaged making it a very favourable trade. But where they really shine is if you can keep them in reserve aslong as possible using auxillia or cavalry to do the early fighting and only then deploy the cohorts. They are robust enough to then wipe the floor with anything they encounter.

It’s the Roman shield wall that’s hard to break down when engaging the enemy. They have a lot of protection and could rotate the front ranks for the next rank to succeed them so they are not exhausted at the front after intense fighting. A very disciplined body of men that makes them so effective

Because front-line combat is their bread and butter specialty. You need to counter them where they are weak, IE, mobility, ranged attacks, and breaking up their unit cohesion by forcing them to fight in multiple directions.

They have high armor, melee defense, and stamina. You basically have to cheese the shit out of them unless your faction has lots of anti armor infantry like axe men and the Indian mace infantry.

Professional standing armies are way more standardized in training and equipment than levies and militias guided by a core of elite nobles or warriors. It certainly gives you an edge. This also happened during the late medieval era, when feudal levies and knights became obsolete in a time of massive professional armies mainly composed by pike formations and gunners

Pikes, pikes and more pikes. I played as Lydia as my first campaign in DEI cause fack it why not. Took all of Asia Minor and, Thrace and Greece then Rome attacked me. I didn’t have an army near by cause the Dacians were mobbing on my border so I built an army in Apollonia, 7 pikes, four javies three archers, 2 horse and 3 infantry held it off agaisnt three full stacks, and was basically attacked every two turns until I burnt the dacians to the ground, sued for peace made them a client state. It was also cool that my client Sparta sent a small army of Spartans maybe a half stack to help defend. Then I marched my three armies over to the western Greek coasts took Brundisium sacked rome and then Rome was basically nothing after I released Syracuse and Carthage slowly took back Africa. The parthians always seem to be a power house so I had to go deal with them and the Armenians. This was on legendary, only way to play DEI

@@Speederzzzthe trick is to rush down a lot of provinces and turn the culture to Greek. Then move to even more land. I like to take up to the Danube or in Dacia. Then move into Anatolia. Sometimes I go to Egypt but eh. The trick lies in the 2nd reform. At that point with all those provinces Greek, the growth of the 1st class is so insane. One of my many play throughs as Sparta before getting bored, I peaked at around 1 million MP, and iirc, peak 1st class was around 150-200k manpower. I like to do proxy wars. Declare on someone, have someone else join and let them take them out, specifically Rome, so they can trigger their reforms and then I have nasty wars with Roman Legionaries against the spartan hoplites. Alas as all TW games, it gets boring late game. The real fun is early-early mid game. After you control 4-5 provinces at imperium 5, it’s too easy. Unless you change stats. Like for britons for example giving super low upkeep. Land one army in Icenii Britain and there will be 4-6 stacks attacking at once. It’s quite the spectacle

It's also important to note that all of the above classes of soldiers were land owning citizen soldiers and legionaries could be drawn from the landless poor

Post-marian soldiers had different pay structures, different gear, different organization, and recruited from no particular social strata. To say that both counts as legionaries seems like very reductive way of telling just how different the legionaries were. Also, this video is definitely talking about post-marian soldiers and Hannibal fought pre-marian soldiers and probably would not have survived under a more modern Roman legion

Add those stats with special formations and you have a powerful backbone to your legion. If only they had the "cycling" that legionaries would do, so you only have to fight for a brief period before slipping to the back of the formation.

Yes you can play it without any DLC :) Just some factions will be unplayable without the DLC but you can still experience the full mod without issues.

the ai have to recruit them first. anytime i give the mod a chance the ai keep recruiting hordes of barbarians instead like in europa barbarorum. idk why Rome would invade greece with mobs of barbarians . i remember in the campaign of greece in the game you cannot have any province where you can have roman legions you only get illyrians as option. so to me that was a nope i rather stick to radious than have the same struggle i have with europa barbarorum like 15 years ago.

Hey guys, I just got this game and I’m struggling with combat. I try to flank the enemy by hiding missile infantry in the woods and melee infantry for support behind them then save my mounted infantry for flanking but I get swarmed OR I won’t have enough money to recruit because I’m not sure how to gain money in the game. They arent the strongest infantry unit, not even close. But every infantry unit that can beat them is of the noble class of population, while these guys are of the most common class. That would make them super OP in DEI... if the AI had to worry about class population. But since they dont, its gonna be your hordes of peasant class legions barely keeping up with unlimited spartan royal phalanxes and carthaginian sacred band elites with armored elephant support, and they never run out, they never go broke, they dont need food or upkeep, they never sleep, they cant be reasoned with....they're artificial intelligence.. for real though DEI is so hard, its only for masochists

The entire Rome thing should be nerfed. If the modders really care about historical accuracy, they should very well downgrade these ficticiously overpowered Roman units that are tuned up just because of the Empire's fame than their true prowess. Legionaries should be decent attacking force but not able to get in any given situation and come up on top no matter what. Not every legion was so disciplined, nor used testudo as if it was standard tactics. Only the most grizzled and best units should have those traits/abilities. And as far as armour goes, Roman armour was not always top notch, the main reason they seemed unstoppable was cause of their unusual shield shape and size. No way a person with a big shield and short sword could take on another with a usual shield and spear so easily. Mainly cause of Reach disadvantage of course. I am of the idea that the whole concept of melee sword units shouldnt be designed to win every encounter against spear units just by default. They should be just a faster medium to heavy infantry that excel in uneven terrain and are ideal for flanking. Not as shock infantry where their charge is their main weapon but a meat grinder that once it flanks you, you are pretty much screwed. Sustainable damage and tanky enough to stay in the fight to pick up easy kills. But of course cavalry units should be able to wreck them. So tune down their armour, defense skill but give them a better shield/block check. Give them a bit more speed and thats it, the ideal heavy infantry skirmishers like type that can do good in almost every situation EXCEPT HEAD TO HEAD engagements against units that should be EXCEPTIONAL for frontline formations, like Pikemen and Spearmen. In the end of the day regardless of history accuracy or what not, just balance...just like Macedonias shouldnt be able to win by spamming pikemen so Rome shouldnt win with Swordmen spam. Triarii were important and known to be the best for a reason.

The stats are tailored to the mod mate, not Rome 2 vanilla. So in the mod battles last more than 1 minute because the mod devs decreased stats amongst a whole host of things
