Serbs are mainly southern Slavic people mixed with Mediterranean peoples. There are also some small element from Celts and Turks. Agree that modern day Turks do have alot of southern Slavic DNA from the ottoman period. Millions of Slavic people were sent to Turkey and the middle East. Also many Slavic people converted to Islam during the Ottoman occupation of the Balkans. After the defeat of the Ottomans in the Russo Turkish war of 1878 large numbers of Islamic Slavs left the Balkans and settled in Turkey. So many Turks do have a component of Slavic DNA. One of my sister in laws is Serbian and she did a DNA test. 40 %was southern Slavic but 40 % was Mediterranean (mainly Italian and Greek). The other 20% was a mixture of German ,Celtic, European Jewish, Northern Slavic and Turkish. She is viewed as a very beautiful woman whose features are unique This may be one of the reasons women from these regions are viewed as so attractive. The mixing of groups creates beautiful offspring.

Absolutely untrue. The Ottomans only stationed their troops in Serbia. There were few if any actual Turkish civilians living in Serbia, and when they did mix with Serbs, the children were disposed of or condemned to a life of solitude. So in actuality, there are very few people who have Turkish ancestry. We are a mix of Slavs, Illyrians and Thracians. The Ottomans left a stain on our culture, which makes people think we are somehow part Turkic. There are more people of Turkic descent in Russia than in Serbia, yet no one gives them any crap about it.

"Heck people mixed during Yugoslavia" - I don't get it? I was talking about the Serbs mixing with the Turks, not with other Slavs. And yes, people did in fact kill half Turkish children. That's how the phrase "Prvi mačići se bacaju u vodu" came about. The people who governed eyalets had absolute control over the local populace and the Ottomans had this tendency to sleep with women who had just gotten married or were about to do so, so when the child was conceived, nobody could be sure if it was fully Serbian or not, so they would throw the "first batch" of kids in the river. I do not have any hard evidence to back my claim, but this is thought to be true. And yes, plenty of Turks have Slavic blood since they would take male children from their homes and bring them over to Anatolia and train them to be soldiers. There were instances where people were exiled from their homes and made to go live in Istanbul, which is what happened to the Serbs who were living Belgrade when it had just been conquered. And to answer tehiea33's question about why people would dispose of any children who were half Turkish. Well of course they would and they certainly did. As I've said, the local aghas would force newlywed women to sleep with them, so of course nobody wanted to keep those children. That was not an era of "political correctness" and "tolerance", people wanted to preserve their national identity, not to mention that who in their right mind would want a child that is the son/daughter of the man who forcibly made you sleep with him, plus he's a foreign invader. I rest my case.

The Ottoman Empire was an Empire of culture and language, not genetics. The Sultans were descended from mostly Christian Slave women. There is no true Turkish blood. There's a pure Slavic blood though. Go to Poland. Austro-Hungarian Aristocracy, which I am part descending from (through my grandmother Vera Dragica of the Teck Family) was similar as well, strengthening their empire with well chosen marriages. If you go to Vienna and Bratislava you will see that the Viennese people are much more mixed and much more often dark skinned than the Slovak people. It's because that's how you run a multi-cultural empire. There's an old saying in Viennese culture that you're not Viennese unless you have a Czech grandmother.

We are confindent because we are highly educated. Serbia after Poland has most female students enrolled into Universities from any other country in the world. But that doesn't make us stuck up. Every Serbian women knows how to cook and takes pride in looking after her man and kids. We are feminist but in a right way, not in way to compete with man like they do in Western countries. In Serbia a women can be a surgeon, but she will be able to cook a feast for her family and friends. We don't put our careers before family.

In Serbia, people still have natural food beside the fact that USA bombed Serbia with depleted uranium. The girls are on right track, the mix of genes does produce pretty people often, but they dont know enough history so they say its slavic and turkish mix. We had very few turks living here even during ottoman rule, and they never mixed with Serbs. Its the mix of Slavs and earlier populations who lived here such as Illyrian and Thracian (what our earlier scientists used to call dinaric people). Latest DNA europe-wide studies clearly show this. Turkish gene is not present at all, but the slavic and local ones are, including traces of celtic and such.
