Been doing the shaped poly mains, round poly cross thing as well for a while now and it's great-it just makes sense. Crosses help direct the control and allow the mains to slide for spin without notching. The advantage I've found is that my crosses break each time at the right moment. With two round or two shaped, the strings often notched and the mains were the ones that broke, but this was well after the playability went to hell. By alternating, the strings break themselves. (Of course, this is a disadvantage if all you want is for your strings to not break-but I'd rather string more often than play with bad strings. This way, I never do.)

Yeah, I've been doing the poly/poly setup for years, with a shaped string in the main and a round in the cross. I've gone from a pretty extreme version of Wiess-Cannon Ultra Cable and Wilson Revolve Spin (2 very slippery strings as well) to less extreme Diadem Solstice and Wilson Revolve, to get more control. I have them strung a kilo apart (+1 on the cross).
@skychaos872 ай бұрын
@@poqeteer Does slippery strings improve durability and lifespan? Especially when having a shaped poly in the mains, would a round and slippery poly in the cross prevent the shaped poly cutting into it?
@poqeteer2 ай бұрын
@@skychaos87 I haven't a problem with the shaped mains cutting in round crosses. It is the other way around as normal (crosses notching the mains). I have tried other shaped mains like Toroline Super Toro on the mains, and those have zero notching on either cross or main, but I found it isn't as durable as the Diadem. I get/got 8 to 10 hours on the Super Toro vs about 10-12 on the Solstice. Note: the Super Toro only comes in a 17 gauge and I use a 17 gauge version of Wilson Revolve Spin, vs using 16L with the Solstice and 16 Revolve Spin. The Toroline/Wilson combo has super snapback if that is what you looking for, just be warned you will be stringing it up more often.

Jonas, please make a video with string recommendations for juniors. Lately, I've come across several concerning cases where teenagers and rec-women playing with light weight rackets below 285 - which is ok -, but strung up with full-bed of board-like tight polyester. As a result, most of them have been experiencing TE and joint issues. I get that full-bed of multifilament doesn't feel well after a few hits, as it tends to stay out of place, but I strongly recommend and insist on a soft round shaped polyester in the mains, but definitely a 1.30 multifilament in the crosses.

My son is 8 and is playing an Ezone 25”. It came strung from Yonex with synthetic gut at maybe 55#. Also tight as a board. I restrung it with multifilament at 38# and he’s now able to hit nice spin despite being a young kid. Probably a younger junior than you were thinking of, but goes to show there’s a moving target for stringing kids as they develop - big range in strength and swing speed.

I am an adult using a Jr aluminum 25 inch an older early 2000's model I have multiple of used due to my size and most of my racquets are around 45--40 pounds now using old nylon gut but one of them where string was almost broken since racquet was new, I have strung at 55 pounds in Babolot nylon gut at a 16 gauge because of racquet model being so light I can compress the strings being this tight.
@caseysmith5442 ай бұрын
@@T_-ow7sw Problem is most of these graphite models at 25 inches are made for good players who are soon going to 26.5--27 inch adult racquet and not a bigger young teen or bigger pre teen age 10--12, odd as these companies have make 26 inch racquets for the Jr range. Then the kids/Jr aluminum models if playing above beginner are harder to find where they used actual tension using a nylon gut becuse of how light the racquet is and how most aluminum if having the plastic part on the string bridge reduces the big vibrations, most aluminum used a very low tension on a nylon gut thus forcing players to redo the nylon gut at higher poundage then the 20--25 pounds it is set at, the few 25--26 inch racquets that are higher strung aluminum like the single line of Ektelon model 23--26 inch from reviews in 25-26 inch models for kids do use too high of poundage in nylon gut string 55 pounds or more for those under 14--16 depending on size of teen.

I'm mostly talking about advanced juniors, teenagers, women who play with regular tennis balls. Everyone younger than that should be playing with Stage 1, 2, 3 balls. I'm mostly calling out some coaches and club stringers here, not the players themselves nor their parents. Can't be playing Hyper G, Lynx Tour etc on a sub 280gram racket in full-bed and complaining about soreness.

Tennis elbow hybrid for Vcore 98, Technifibre X-OneBiphase 17g mains at 50lbs, Yonex PolyTourRev 17g crosses at 48lbs. Buttery soft bed on an already buttery muted frame lets me play in comfort and lasts really long for my level.

Jonas, can you do a video talking about what the effects of different tension between the mains and crosses are? You mention you string your crosses lower than your mains, but there are brands that sell hybrids (like Grapplesnake or Toroline) that on the package say they recommend stringing the crosses 2 lbs higher than the mains. Can you enlighten us?

Since gut holds tension so well even though ALU has poor tension loss specs, when used together it seems to play nice for me even after a month or 2. Weird huh? And I play almost every day but I do rotate between 2 equally strung rackets every side change. I've gone down in tension from 55/53 to 53/51 mains/crosses.

I've been using multi mains with poly crosses for most of last 15 years. Technifre NRG2 16G multi mains at 52 lbs with Kirschbaum Max Power 17G poly crosses at 48 lbs is my typical setup and I go up 2 lbs in hot weather and down 2 to 4 lbs in cold weather on the crosses and mains. I play outdoors in the winter in 35-50 degree F temperatures. I've played gut/poly too and it is great but gut is a little too expensive. I find hybrids give a good balance of power, spin, control, feel and longevity. I like hybrids more than all poly. I play a combination of singles and doubles and am an all court player who likes to attack and volley.

I've been using a multi in the mains (Xcel, NXT or Velocity) at 55lbs, and a poly in the crosses (ALU Power) at 47lbs for over ten years on at least a dozen rackets (Wilson Blades, v7, 8 and 9, and Wilson Shifts 99 Pros) and have never seen any signs of "warping" of the frames. You hear people warn of that happening, but I've never seen or heard of a single real world example of it. The reality is stringing a hybrid like this, keeping with what are the recommended best tensions for each type of string (polys 10-12 percent lower than multis) results in a fabulous combination. It seems modern rackets are not so fragile as to be damaged by this difference in tensioning.

What is the best black round cross option for SnapBack? With a shaped poly like Ultra Cable, is there a way to get it not to twist? Should it be twisted when it’s first strung, or would that be a poor string job?
@GeraldVeeneman2 ай бұрын
Multis indeed don't use to snap back. However some ones like Tecnifibre Multifeel contain a special coating that provides snap back.

Aloha Jonas, Great content, as usual! 👍 Have you experimented with a poly/poly hybrid of different gauges? Specifically, the thicker gauge in the mains and the thinner gauge in the crosses. I've been using this setup for a while and like the control of the thick mains combined with the "pop" and snapback the crosses provide. I've also hybrided a shaped/textured main string in this setup, which has been well received by my clients.

I have strung tighter recently with poly and it surprised me it didnt hurt my sensitive arm. I think there are more variables. I actually play it without my dampener now.

There are definitely many variables. Different racquets affect players differently. It all depends on technique, physique, etc. It is quite complicated, but sounds good you are playing pain-free. Just beware of things popping up later on.

Hi! I really like to use full alu power rough or restring sync. Sometimes times i feel pain in my elbow, so i thought about to try hybrid with MLT. I strung my main racket (LM radical tour), MLT/alu power rough, 24 kg The fell was horrible!!! idk why. Then i strung this racket with Champion Choice, it was better. In my opinion, full-bad alu power rough or sync in 21-22kg is better, then velocity MLT+poly 24-25kg.

I have recently used Technifibre NRG2 mains at 50# and Alu Power Soft at 45 in crosses in a Speed MP. It is a wonderful setup but the multi breaks too quickly (3 sessions) so going back to full Alu Power Soft at 47/45#. Are the multis you mentioned more durable?
@madbadtrad77462 ай бұрын
Thanks, I love gut in the mains; and poly in the crosses. What do you think about cutting only the poly out and restringing the poly only?
@LuisLunaTarazon2 ай бұрын
Have you experimented using a hybrid with a shaped poly with a multifilament? If so, does that affect the snap-back too much compared to a round poly? For example, would I have to move the strings back into position with my fingers if I used Lynx Tour with Velocity MLT (Tell Dennis Fabian to make that a pre-packaged Hybrid, by the way)? I'm not too concerned with the durability, since it's better to break the string early because of the potential warping of the frame. On that note, I've found ALU Power (and to a greater extent, ALU Power Rough) to be the worst string to Hybrid with for that warping issue. As addictive as that string feels, It loses tension too fast, and I've had rackets get a quarter-inch shorter after a couple of weeks. However, It's the cheapest way I know of extending a racket's length if you put the poly in the main.

I've only recently decided to say to hell with it, and go for a natural gut hybrid. Touch VS and RPM Rough. Poly bags out anywhere from 12-20 hours with me anyway. So if I can get long enough out of the gut, the cost won't be as much of a factor. Nothing feels like gut either. It's on another planet entirely.

Hi, i have tecnifibre natural nrg2 16 1.32mm on the crosses at 54lb and Kirschbaum Pro Line Evolution (Blue) 1.25mm on mains at 50lb. Do you think it is a good combination on my Aero 98? And what about the lbs?
@jamesbarletta4092 ай бұрын
Does tension loss of Poly plateau at a certain percentage? For example, If I like to play at 40lbs and I use a poly that loses a max 20% over time, then if I string it at 50lbs, then eventually it will lose tension to 40lbs but stay at 40lbs.
@curttheboywonder2 ай бұрын
Why do many pros use rough strings as crosses. I get why they don’t used shaped if natural gut mains but wouldn’t rough more or less be the same thing they’re trying to avoid with shaped? Just got a reel of pro line 2 rough and it seems like it would eat the gut as easy as anything else. Second question and I know this is just going to be an educated guess but if I usually string at 55 on an electronic constant pull, what would you recommend I string at on a crank lockout like my Neos 1000?

I found Toroline Enso Pro to be pretty slick and work well with shaped strings. I am sure there are many other round and "slippery" options. RPM Blast seems to work quite well as it is eight-sided and coated. It needs to be a string that promoted some kind of movement.
