My new theory is that the white walkers never came south of the wall. Bear with a bit of tin foil. This is the first time. The cave paintings, the stories, all of that has been passed down based on Bran going back in time and trying to warn everyone. They play the telephone game over the ages and Jon snow is remembered as the last hero and episode 6 was the journey with his companions to stop the night king. The lord of light religion is a misinterpretation of his warnings made to fire mages in the past. The irony is that, much like what happened to hodor, I think Bran inadvertently creates all the events leading up to the night king going south of the wall. They have spent a lot of time warning Bran not to stay too long in the past, that foreshadowing does not end well for him. And maybe he just does his best while stuck in the past making peace between humans and children, building a wall, writing books (still stuck in some locked room in old town because it's unverified), and telling stories of the future. What do you guys think?

This theory is really good. It paints the white walkers as just survivors willing to do anything to live. people of the faith of rhollor view the white walkers as evil yet the white walkers lived in the north with giants and men in their territory without fighting for 8000 years.
@bridge47 жыл бұрын
exactly. 8k years (unless they were hibernating) is an incredibly long time to not war. whereas many never goes a decade without warring. not saying man is evil. just saying that its a bit ironic to call the WW evil because they have warred 2 times in 8,000 years
@ssabucca6 жыл бұрын
Why can't it just be as simple as... The Night Kings power comes from the long night and he can sense that the winter that is coming will be one of the longest, hence the most powerful time for him to return? Sometimes, even in Martin's writings, he does do things that are fairly basically straightforward. Who really didn't know that Jon Snow would come back to life?

bridge4 it's possible, but in my opinion, if that were the case, he could have just stayed in the land of always winter, since it's quite far from human lands
@bridge47 жыл бұрын
+niteshmurti I hear ya. But keep in mind thoros came to westeros within the last decade either two. And melisandre more recently. The difficulty of my argument is that we dont see the "what if." Maybe the NK has a vision of BennerO in the books or kinvara ib the show mobilizing the followers of rhhlor north of the wall to attack So before that happens, the NK started moving south It just seems very vanilla for an evil entity to move and a hero to respond. My guess is that the "enemy" is acting as a hero for his own side in hopes of preventing their own prophecized doom (I don't think it's going to work tho.. I think he's gonna get smashed in dorne)

Imo the idea of 'evil' in this story is the very idea of war and conquest itself. It all comes back to the war between the first men and the children and how they created evil to fight evil basically, they were being massacred so they created the Night King to do the same to the First men. He himself isn't evil, but what happened to him was definitely evil on the part of the children, he was turned into a lifeless immortal forever to kill his own people. But in the same sense, the Children did that evil in the name of 'good', to save themselves. Which is were the grey area comes in. War IS evil even if it's done in the name of good. most 'good' people in the show have been forced to do evil things in the name of war.
@bridge47 жыл бұрын
couldnt agree more. the real evil is war in general. very GRRM thing to say. granted, the hound line from "brokan man" episode still applies "you dont win by dying either" this story is so complicated. so gray!
@TJE.137 жыл бұрын
bridge4 That dude from the Broken man episode gave me this very thought. He wasn't an evil guy, but he lost himself in the tide of war before he even knew what was happening and did some evil shit. He was one of the wisest people in the story to date, he was the only one so far who understood the futility of it all, the 'Game of Thrones' and how normal people die for richer people to control land and titles, just to be mistreated by the next King or Queen. A real sleeper character, shame he didn't get more screen time he was an interesting dude.

Damn, you could convince me of the most strange sounding things. The Lord of Light is evil, I agree. Light creates shadows, without light there is no darkness, without good there is no evil. It makes me wonder, is anyone evil? Shireen was good, 100%, when you compare anyone to her, they are evil. Take Ned, he lied to his entire family and killed people. Compared to someone like Cersei however, Ned seems like the best person that has ever walked the earth. There is no black and white, nor good and evil. There are opinions and comparisons. Maybe burning people makes the burned go to the afterlife where everything is perfect. Maybe becoming a wight is super comfortable, and the Night King is doing everyone a favor. We simply don't know, and frankly, I doubt anyone in GoT/ASOIAF knows if what they do is good or evil, in the grand scheme things. They only think from their perspective, and then everything they do is good. Anyway, sorry for the long comment, it probably doesn't make sense at all

bridge4 well, it's nice to know that I can keep on talking here, the ideas won't go away. Speaking of ideas, in the season 4 (I think) promo they showed 1 Dragon flying above King's Landing. The Night King currently has one Dragon, and it wouldn't surprise me if he just started attacking castles and cities with Viserion, and then raise all the people he killed. Imagine a million Wights in the middle of Westeros.
@bridge47 жыл бұрын
that vision didnt have snow tho, so i dont think it was viserion. maybe it was just drogon when dany went to parly in season 6? or maybe after the snow melts at the end of season 8?

bridge4 I hadn't thought of the snow, you're right. I hope it's long after the second ( or maybe even more) Long Night, showing Jon and Dany ruling, with new baby dragons as a final montage. Never going to happen though

Sometimes lying is for the better. When Ned lied he did good. That lie might just save Westeros.
@michaelmarshall15877 жыл бұрын
I've always thought that there was more to the Night King than just some killing machine that wanted to take over the world. Ever since the vision of the children stabbing him in the chest and him looking petrified, I knew who the true villain of the story was, the children of the forest. Even if the Night King does have some kind of revenge agenda the children made him that way. They turned him into what he is so I honestly don't see him as a true villain at all.
@purplegorilla95926 жыл бұрын
Dan Weiss called the White Walkers "ice demons" and they decided to make them ugly and old and wrinkled in the adaptation. Not the beautiful, graceful, slick versions they are in the books. GRRM would also never call them "ice demons". So, therefore, I suspect it will be a straight forward good vs bad in the show and that there will be ulterior motives other than the desire to kill everything. I believe the books however, will feature a more gray storytelling of The Others and will give us reasons for their actions and may even make us feel bad for them. But don't hold your breath that they'll do any of that in 6 episodes in the adaptation.

"Why now?" Comets, dragons, witches and war. But what else is new/starting all over again? Q: Why do the faces "carved" into the Weirwood trees appear to be in such physical or spiritual pain? Are they truly carved (and if so, by whom?) or did they form as the outward expression of the Greenseer soul trapped within? Its hard to turn a "whisper on the wind" into a cry for help - but a silently screaming face rising out of the bark and weeping blood should be a big enough clue for anyone. A Clash of Kings: When Jon, dreaming as Ghost, heard Brans voice from a Wierwood (via the direwolfs supernatural senses), he could also smell soil and stone and death. The implication is that Bran was communicating back thru time from a Greenseat yet to be found: the one under Winterfell. "I like it down here," the future 3 Eyed Crow (still a child) said. Does he really have a choice, though? A recognised trope of horror movies is the demonic creature luring in a victim who ends up becoming the demon themselves. There's something poetic in the archetype of, say, a Genie needing to find someone else to trap inside the bottle so that he himself can be finally free. We've yet to read how - or even IF - Bloodraven will die. But can he even, until his heir-apparant has been found? Or is he, as the "Last" Greenseer, cursed to remain an endlessly withering, ever-living prisoner of the Wierwood until his replacement is installed beneath a screaming tree of his own? I cant help but wonder if his motives are as magnanimous as GoT would have us believe. Or indeed, what fresh opportunities this "changing of the guard" might present to one who is opposed to the Greenseers and their controlling vision of history. Or maybe it's just that those pained, pale, bloody faces in the woods kinda give me the creeps ; )

bridge4 I tell you whats bogus, Kev. That goddamn quote I gave up there! You know, the one in that paragraph I just...deleted ; ) There's only so many rewinds I can watch to try and back myself up. But I do wonder about Bran seeing "beyond the tree." That doesn't necessarily mean he'll ever escape his roots, excuse the pun. Just that he wont always be limited to the viewpoint of looking out from the eyes of those creepy carved faces. Anyway, time to put the genie back in the bottle. Great stuff here. Just wanted to add some thoughts I've had recently. Family is the common thread that links the motives of all the grey characters. From Cersei to Samwell, if they have a shred of humanity in them, all of their good and bad deeds are done in the interest of family - if not their own bloodline, then the one's to whom they are bonded by love and loyalty. Family is what Samwell states he is striving to protect. Gilly asks him "what about the rest of the world?" Sam replies: " I don't care about them, not really". I believe the Night King shares the same motives. He is marching South to reclaim the prince, who was promised to him. He just wants his last male heir: little Sam.

I think the Walkers timing on the attack has to do with a theory based around Bran going back in time, getting trapped and becoming the Night King or the first walker. The reason the Walkers are back now is because Bran is about to depart back into the past and the Walker's arrival is what sent that chain of events into action. Three-Eyed Raven says the ink is dry on the past. What has happened is what will always happening. It's a self-fulfilling prophesy. If the walkers don't march upon the world at this time, Bran would never go back into the past in the first place. The NIght King is activating a sequence of events.

Was that we were supposed to get from that, that I just got on the boat late? Did everybody else know this and I'm just catching up now? Why did it never occurred to me before until just randomly clicking on a video that I've already watched by you and having that opening scene hit me in the mouth?!

in the show version The Red woman reason for burning Shrieen was for the good weather to attack Winterfell. In the books I believe the burning of Shrieen (IF Happens) that news reach the Wife and The Red Woman that Stannis LOST the war. They decide to burn Shrieen as Sacrifice.

I don't really buy this idea that seems to be bouncing around right now that the Whitewalkers aren't bad. They're the rightful villains of the series because they represent death- something to be feared by all humankind. At this point I don't think there are any gods within this story, there is just magic- different types. There is both good and bad on both sides. Ice magic is good in the Children of the Forest and the Stark Wargs and Greenseers but it was also used to create the Whitewalkers. Fire magic is good in Dany and her dragons but as you've pointed out, the cult of the Lord of the Light use it for evil. I think the main plot point surrounding the different belief systems is going to be that it's all from the same source, it doesn't matter where it came from- it matters what you do with it. The Whitwalkers were actually created using both types of magic, the CotF and Dragonglass and I think it will take both sides to defeat them Dany/Dragons/Fire, Bran/Ice and of course Jon Snow who holds the power of both.

I think that the red witch is a fascinating character because she does have formidable gifts from her god, but like all of the other religious zealots in this world (a world where gods actually actively participate in events and bestow power to some clergy) she mistook her own interpretations of signs from her god to be the only possible meaning for those signs and it led her to do some very awful things, which anyone who gives up their own ability to judge right and wrong to the whims of what they believe a higher power wants is prone to do. The thing is, she learns her lesson, she learns it at a terrible price, enough so that she seems ready to give up her position and go into reclusion until she is convinced to resurrect Jon Snow, and afterwards her dedication to her purpose is restored yet she does not go back to blindly believing that she has a full understanding of what her god wants from her, she is skeptical enough about her own understanding and interpretations of his signs to her to be swayed against rash and inhumane action without thought again.

@Kaplz016 жыл бұрын
Melisandre is the reason for every problem in westeros rn. Without her Stannis would be king with Renly by his side. The Lannisters would all be dead including Tywin. Robb Stark would be alive because he wouldn't have gone south because Stannis would have gotten revenge for him. The wildlings would still be alive and with Jon as the lord commander they might have formed a treaty of some sort. Danny would probably be dead because Tyrion would be dead. In that case Jorah wouldn't have been there to save her. The Wildlings could come south of the wall. The Night king would be stuck with a tiny army beyond the wall without a dragon. To rap up: the Starks would all be alive, Stannis would be king, the Lannisters would all be dead, Danny would be dead, the wildlings would be alive, and the Night king wouldn't be a threat. The end.

Okay, I'm inclined to believe that R'hllor does exist (if any gods in the ASOIAF universe are real- I REALLY love your theory about magic/power coming from humans) but I think the followers have run the religion off the tracks. Compared to the faith of the Seven- which has a lot of rules that are actually codified in the Seven Pointed Star thereby giving people a guide to follow-- and the Old Gods, which have no official rules, it seems to me that the Lord of Light's followers do what they want "or what they interpret in the fire" and call it doctrine- which is a recipe for corruption and disaster.

Get what you mean with AA being reborn to fight in Westeros, can’t wait to find out more about the long night in Esoss Can see all the red God’s followers getting a right gut punch when shit finally happens and their interpretations of prophecy are proven wrong, really wrong. Think the old Gods and the children will be the nearest to the true religion and what’s actually going on and Rhllor’s is just their own spin on it, much the way Abrahamic religions are just different takes in the same outline.
@lrmcatspaw16 жыл бұрын
I had this theory a long while back, after I heard of the doom of valeria in the show. However my view on it was that the white walkers saw the religion of Rholor as something that would destroy the world, and wanted to prevent it.

So it’s like real life. Different parts of the world believe in different gods and excuse their evil deeds in the name of their gods. All these gods are never seen but makes sense to have them to explain things we don’t understand. If there is a god, it’s the same god, just interpreted differently by different cultures. Some call it God, some call it Allah, some call it Yaweh etc. Same....

I started reading A Song of Ice and Fire when AGame Of Thrones first came out in 1996. At the time, i saw it as a complex tapestry of one interwoven plot, but now as I've started my first reread as i wait for Winds to come out, i think it's two distinct stories being told together. If you isolate Jon and Danaerys, and isolate the Azor Ahai and Last Hero stories, each happens simultaneously, but seperately as a large event that impacts certain regions differently. In Danaerys' dreams early on, she only dreams of Drogon, and at some point she dreams of war on the Trident, and during the first Long Night, Lucifer Means Lightbringer points out that there is a correlation to the Bloodstone Emperor near Westeros during that time, but he never makes it north. In the Last Hero story, he makes it to the dead lands in the Bran chapter shortly after he wakes from the coma and i would almost bet that the dead lands reference was to where Winterfell was built. You and others all agree on specific points of the legend, so i won't go into that, but it mentions his broken sword, much like Ser Waymar's broken sword in the prologue, but Bran is broken as well. Joe Magician has a video on House Strong that i found compelling and a theory that House Stark stems from them, and i think that he may be right, and it seems like the Grey King of Ironborn legend is Brandon the shipwright of Stark legend. But when you look at the history, not only of the Targeryan family and the Valyrian people and the Empire of the dawn, you find a mirroring affect that is equal and opposite that seems to refer to the story of Ser Symeon and the Mirror Shield. This duality is dominate all throughout where there is black and white, AND gray with the characters in that the characters are flawed, but the plot device is not. The human heart in conflict is the only thing worth writing about, but i think the black and white refers to the Ice and Fire, Jon and Danaerys are so different in their stories that it's hard to see them together. Jon is so honorbound to his duty that i don't see him budging any more than i see Danaerys doing any different being honorbound to claim Westeros. But, we haven't seen the Long Night yet, and that could change everything. D&D both admited that they changed Danaerys' ending in the show, but they didn't say anything about Jon. In the books, Stannis goes to Winterfell without Melisandre, his wife and daughter. Jon and Val seem much more likely to be a reenvisioning of the Night's King and Queen and Danaerys is remarried. Everything at this point is so completely different now.
