There’s more to this though, If you go into the drugstore and really study the lipsticks or glosses or even shades of foundation there are slight differences even within the same shade. Go look. Pick up two of the same items in the same shade. I see this because I used to do color matching at my job. I can see the difference if there’s a 10% shift in yellow or red. My eye is trained at this point. No two bottles are exactly the same. Each batch is going to have slight variations. That’s because the ingredients are hand poured and measured. They can be off slightly depending on if the person poured every single drop of that mix into the mixer. Also, some pigments oxidize over time or once they hit the air. WHO even knows if her original Myth is really the right shade.

I’d love to see a video explaining some of the factors behind shifts in foundation undertones. For instance, heritage makeup brands whose foundation shades leaned pink in the 1960s to 1990s started to lean orange in the 00s. And now in the 2020s there’s a demand for brands to cover all undertones i.e. pale/light/medium/deep/dark neutral, pale/light/medium/deep/dark olive, warm (pink/red/yellow), cool (blue/light yellow). What is the chicken and what is the egg, do you think, in these default undertone shifts by big makeup brands? I believe the shift to orange being the default undertone from the 00s onwards was due to a shift towards fake tanning by consumers, and the opportunity for brands to sell 2 foundation shades at a time per consumer (your tan shade and your natural shade). I’d be interested to know what you’ve observed. As you allude in this video, some elements of colour shift over time can be human error while other elements of shift can be deliberate nudging of the product to make room for a “new” shade.

So happy I still have my old Spice lip pencil from the 90's that my mom bought me in the 8th grade saved in case the color shifts on the Spice liner, it's old but was preserved well and the shade is in tact, the new one I have to say is missing that punch that my old spice pencil gave me. And one thing I do remember as a teen was I all my mom's MAC make up was from Canada. Save you old MAC lipsticks protect them so the color doesn't go off & a company called Three Custom remakes the shade as close as possible and has a lot of old shades on file.

Raw material changing over time makes sense. However I don't buy human error. Aren't ingredients weighed and measured? That allows a formulation to stay the same everytime. This explanation makes no sense. No one is cooking from scratch each time a batch is made.
@SchnarphStudios4 ай бұрын
It might have to do with how people perceive different colors. I read somewhere that Pantone makes its candidates for employment take a whole bunch of vision tests, because all they deal with is color.
@MonikaPodgurska4 ай бұрын
@@SchnarphStudios the only way the color would change is if the formulation changes, which would only change if certain ingredients are no longer available. The creation of the color boils down to the chemist mixing the ingredients to create the formulation. Once it is made it doesn't change. Now if a pigment needs to be replaced it can change to color completely so the chemist would have to try to tweek thing until they get a match. In which case it still isn't human error. What they have failed to take into consideration is color fades over time. Things degrade. That original lipstick isn't even the color it originally was.

There’s a reason why they are changing the OG formulas. They do not wanna try to source the pigments & it’s actually cheaper to make the new formulas they just put out & this is why shades changed so much, but I do think the formulas even tho they are cheaper perform better & longer & the colors are closer to the actual OG first releases. I do think they look different before touching skin, I have a lot & when I put them on they look like the OG but in the actual stick they appear almost more duel but they aren’t it’s something with this formula

I will say they are not close to the 90’s versions but almost close to the early 2000’s versions. EL bought them out & like Cleary it won’t be 100% the same but I do think the brand is slowly moving to how it was when it was the “it” brand.

My opinion? Shades are a product of their time. Like back in the 2010's neons were very in. Back in the 90's people liked primary colors. 70's were very yellow/brown earth tones. Etc... Also when they make the 'same product' when the company that owns it changes there is a tendency to want to make it cheaper. Cheaper pigment = color change. Makes sense that they keep the name and just change the shade a bit if it does not really sell. At the end of the day it's all about the $$$$$$.

I get the ick when I see huge changes like that. Feels like the brands don't care and just want your money. I always assume that a few people dream up and produce a specific color they wanted in their brand. The fact that they can't bother to smear the original lipstick on a sheet of printer paper and laminate it or whatever to keep matching it to the original swatch just makes me feel like they say f it, we need a peach in the line and this one will do. Did yall not have a vision???? And refrencing on skin and just hoping you dont get a tan or low iron is so stupid and lazy in my opinion. My own skin has changed so much over time. And relying on a single humans' eyes and their hairy arm and hand is insulting and insane.
