This play illustrates the value of Gronk as well. He's essentially the only legitimate TE in the league who is used regularly to block interior defensive linemen. In fact, I've never seen that done with regularity in my three decades of watching the NFL. Not even the Giants did that with Bavaro (who was a truly excellent blocker as well as a pass catcher). This is also why I used to laugh when people used to say that Jimmy Graham was as good as Gronk. Graham is an oversized WR who may literally be the worst blocking TE in the league; Gronk may be the best blocking TE ever among legitimate, pass-catching TEs. And when a guy grades out to F 40 percent of the offensive plays, he cannot be better than a grade grades out to A in 40 percent of offensive plays - even if he's catching 30 TDs.
@Trepur3495 жыл бұрын
This is exactly why I think Gronk is the best football player of all time (surpassing LT). Gronk has the best hands of any TE in history, he's made catches that I thought were impossible for anyone of his size to make. Gronk is the best route runner of any TE in history, and on medium routes not only is Gronk the best TE in history, he's statistically the best receiver in history (though maybe that's partially because the arguably greatest QB of all time is the one throwing him the ball). Gronk is the best blocker of any TE in history. Nobody in history has had Gronk's receiving ability, strength or run blocking ability. And Gronk has all of it. If you were to design a perfect football player, it would be Gronk but with stronger, less-injury prone knees. We'll probably never again see a player with Gronks combination of size, strength, hand-eye and talent. Truly a joy to watch.

@SuperJohn123545 жыл бұрын
Gronk has some of the best hands I have ever seen, his ability to use his body to get open is second to none, he was deceptively fast for a big guy and very hard to tackle, in fact they didn't legally tackle him at all and that's the issue, because of his size people were given a free shot at him, in 2018 the Jags literally took him out of the game with an illegal tackle, if they did that to Odel or AB they would have been fined and suspended.

Agreed. They're scheme agnostic. Everyone outside of New England builds their team around their stars and live by a philosophy. The Patriot's philosophy is to beat the other team's philosophy through the use of versatile players. They realize that it doesnt matter who rushes for 1000+ yards as long as the team can rush for over 1000+ yards. They don't care who can make 10 tackles and 2 sacks as long as they can get sacks and INTs in the game. Thats why they can turn a bunch of "nobodies" into somebodies. That's why former Patriots players typically don't do well elsewhere (except for Richard Seymour and Chandler Jones)

Great stuff! Have to mention that Brady was close to being put into the hospital by the right DE who came off a stunt. The left side of NE's oline messed up the protection. If Brady weren't Brady and had not understood the play perfectly and read the defense pre- and post-snap perfectly and understood that he needed to get rid of the ball early with anticipation and lead the receiver, he could've hold onto the ball and got his bell rung.
@DMDvideo105 жыл бұрын
All teams have their schemes. What NE does better than them is they find the right players for the way they play. Not exactly star level, just smart, physical players. Then there is Tom Brady... The ultimate chip on his shoulder player who continues to quiet doubters... It's actually hilarious to hear some of the media still say he's "lucky" or he "cheats" or it's "Belichick"... 6 rings and counting...
@crucisnh5 жыл бұрын
I agree with this, Donald. A *HUGE* key to the Pats success is acquiring players who are both smart and tough. The Pats play a game that requires more than simply raw talent. They require smart players who can adapt to the way that Belechik changes defenses to counter the other team. Not everyone can do that. Some players have immense talent but can't adapt to week to week changes. They are more comfortable in relatively static systems. But the only constant in the Pats' "system" is change, and well, Tom Brady and Bill Belechik.

The reason the Patriots are hard to beat is their coaches ability for game-time adjustments on both sides of the ball. It is rare that opposing teams have consistent successful drives or stops. They keep competitive games fairly close and Belichick is sheer genius at the end-game, clock and TOs and has Brady at the helm. The Patriots very rarely lose 31-10 and very often win 31-10.

I’m a little confused. Maybe you can clear it up. I thought the ‘quarters’ setup was how the Chargers decided to scheme against the Ravens & Lamar Jackson in particular. I assumed it was to neutralize the damage a good scrambling QB can do. If that was the case, why would they continue to run it against the Patriots? I’m a Chiefs fan & I don’t recall them running this defense against us in either game. Maybe I just didn’t see it?
@TheQBSchool5 жыл бұрын
I think it evolved for them over the past few weeks and they would use it in passing situations or, as you say, vs. LJ. It obviously causes some issues for both sides of the ball, but the Pats had a great plan to run and PA it and when the Chargers went base they threw it. Classic out schemed/coached. @sevenrats5 жыл бұрын
@@markjefferson2434 You are out of your mind. Manning played into his thirties and the one and done in the playoffs were mostly his fault. He threw three interceptions against the Patriots in the AFC championship game. If you asked professional football coaches to take any qb in history for the their team ALL of them would take Tom Brady. Against KC this year when they fell behind or were tied 3 times in the 4th quarter, I said, "well, it's Brady Time" and he brought them back 3 times. Regardless of the system or the defense, in that situation the QB has to play flawlessly and execute every single play. He succeeds more than he's failed even when the defense has let them down. His performance in the second half against Seattle in the Superbowl is the single greatest by any Quarterback ever. That was THE #1 defense. He scorched them for 300 yards passing. They hadn't given up that many yards all season. It would have been impossible for any other quarterback. The 4th quarter is where Tom Brady lives. It's his home.

Oh and this yr with a defense that shut out the best offense in the league until the 4th Qtr. And then next best offense ,you hold them to 3 pts in the superbowl! I love how people talk but don't know the facts. Truth is Brady has never won without a top defense. Everyone brings up the fact that Manning 2nd ring was won by the defense, but neglect to mention all of Brady rings were because of the defense. Oh and btw; speaking of fault, every superbowl loss the Patriots suffered was Because of Brady. Each superbowl loss was on him having had the ball last and couldn't deliver. Against the eagles he had 2 chances! Couldn't deliver. Kinda hard to be the goat with those facts getting thrown in your face. The Bolts could run the exact same thing against identical personnel on the Pats, and the Pats would crush them with speed and aggression. 7 DBs and Edelman gets the free release? Really? BB would never do that. One of those DBs - preferably the most physical - would be up in Edelman's grill knocking the snot out of him at the line. BB's about the only coach who isn't dogmatic about the situation on the field and the Main Chance. 7 DBs? One would be blitzing, so there's no time for such nonsense to develop. TB12 understands the situation; whereas, most coaches train their QBs to play something carefully choreographed, without regard for making decisions after the snap. Free release? Brady will see it and punish it. Miss your jam at the line? Brady will see it and punish it. I just can't believe the Bolts used the same tactics against TB12 that they used against Lamar Jackson.
@bobbymira82345 жыл бұрын
I don't get it either. I don't understand why coaches always play it safe against Brady. He's a lot of dink and dunk. And a lot of what they've always done is value the slot receiver. When was the last time they had a premier wide out? Randy Moss maybe? Everything is in the flat, short 5 yard pass and 7 yards after the catch and then the occasional 15 yard pass. You have to give cred to BB and TB for exploiting the soft defenses but teams need to take more risks and make him get rid of that ball. As Brady ages, he looks worse and worse when he has to get rid of it and no one is open. He doesn't even look like an athlete when he gets pressured. Looks so uncoordinated when he feels like he's gonna get smacked and he's trying to throw it away. But if you keep giving their slot receivers free releases, you're basically just wasting your time and energy. Those DBs need to take more risks and jam the Edelmans or Welkers, Amendolas, etc. If they lose the battle, oh well, someone in the secondary will just have to make the tackle, but at least you gave yourself a chance by trying to disrupt the timing. San Diego got destroyed in that game because they played it way too safe. Ridiculous...

Tom Brady is nothing but a system QB. The problem is that only Tom Brady can run that system. He also knows every other teams defensive system. No other quarterback in NFL history has ever had such a mastery of offensive football AND been as fast reading defenses. He's a fucking machine. Bill Belichick created the system and knows he found the right guy to run it. On another team Tom Brady would still be great but together Bill and Tom are a phenomenon. This may never happen again. Ever.
@FreeSociety15 жыл бұрын
Brady also improvises and makes thousands of plays all on his own when things break down (which they often do). He is not merely a "system QB". Also, at U-Michigan (College) Brady's won lost record was 20 - 4 (no Belichick involved), and he would be brought in to bail out Drew Henson (failed QB - but for political reasons would start over Brady), and Brady would rescue the Team and lead them to come-from-behind victories (just like he does in the NFL). You don't coach that. You cannot teach "ice water in your veins" under maximum pressure. Few are born with that ...Brady was, and is the King of playing under pressure.
