There's also the element of risk aversion. If you buy brand X and it does what you wanted it to do, you're less inclined to try other brands because they might not, and you'll have wasted money. Even for trivial amounts of money.
@BlogginBrandi
@BlogginBrandi 6 жыл бұрын
And, in most cases brand x is made by other brands behind the scenes. I had this happen with a product of mine. They wanted me to private label it to sell at a STEEP discount for a major retailer. Even though the change would be massive for my business it could actually hurt me in the long run because of the price cut.

Do you ever hear a song and you think it is okay, but nothing special? The next day you get a hook in the song stuck in your head, so you decide to listen to the song again? You listen to the song again and you somewhat start to like the song? The next day do you have another part of the song stuck in your head? You then decide to listen to the song again, and you actually start to like it? Then you start listening to the song on a regular bases? Could this be an example of the Mere Exposure Effect?

What about being loyal to, say, SciShow and its sister channels? :-) As someone with a serious food allergy that is frequently under-labelled, I buy specific food brands that I have a history of no bad reactions to. It has nothing to do with advertising or social identity. For much the same reason, after a bad experience with a local vet clinic, I'm extremely loyal to, and encourage others to use, the one that has taken very good care of my cats for years. I couldn't care less about clothing brands, but then, I prefer serendipitous and interesting thrift shop finds. The few things I do have a brand affiliation to, it's because I've had reason to compare whatever relevant qualities are involved and I make a choice. (Eg, one makeup brand: no animal testing, great quality and colours, reasonable price). That said, I've been wondering for a long time why so many people get so worked up over what brand they wear or cheer for or whatever. It honestly baffles me, but then, I'm an introvert with anxiety and not much for joining crowds, just watching them and trying to figure out what they're doing and why. :-)

Most people eat what they grew up with and are used to. And people usually don't like to try something new, except when something becomes a trend and suddenly everybody eats it, then they get pushed by friends, family and the media to try it. That's when people try something new. A German will grow up with a German cuisine, an Italian with an Italien one, a Japanese with a Japanese one and when they grow up they'll mainly cook the same meal their parents cooked.

I agree with the whole 'less choices makes it easier' thing. I recently went out to eat in downtown with the hubs and we stopped a soup place. They only do daily menus and you choose between, like, three different soups, two sandwiches or salads, and you get a drink, a cookie, and a piece of fruit. It's a total of like 14 bucks for soup with either sandwich or salad, plus drink and fruit. So, yeah, I'm one of those people that will take 15 to 25 minutes to order at most places because I don't want to waste money on something I don't like; and the more choices I have the harder it is for me. So I actually really liked that the soup place only have a few things to pick from. I personally think it also made their food better because they didn't have too many things to cook. Now, I could self-impose a few choices on myself when I go anywhere, but I think physiologically-business wise it would make more sense for places to have smaller menus and stop trying to be all things all the time.

There are people who like to buy from fancy shops even if the exact same product they are buying is 10% cheaper at a discounter. They excuse it by saying that the "special atmosphere" in the fancy shop is worth the surcharge. Even if tests prove that the quality of a discounter home brand is much better than a mainstream brand, these people still prefer the much more expensive mainstream brand. People are snobs, and it would be below them to step into a discounter.

In high school, I was an adamant Pepsi fan while my friend was a hardcore Coke fan. We both took the Pepsi challenge. You guessed it: He chose Pepsi and I chose Coke. Later, our school ran its own cola challenge, pitting Pepsi against Coke, with a surprise third contender. Result: Pepsi beat Coke by a wide margin, but RC beat them both.

I've never been fond of biases, and in turn, brand loyalty. I myself haven't bought a logoed shirt in over 10 years. Admittedly, there are some brands I do find myself somewhat loyal to. Not to the point where I don't see their flaws or _won't_ buy a competitor's product, but enough where I will shop for them first and hope for their success. However, I tend to buy whatever best suits my needs. Even if the quality, flavor, performance, etc is worse, if it does what I paid for it to do then it was worth buying.

I can understand someone who's been using iPhones since the iPhone 3G not wanting to switch to android, because all of their app data, etc. is all with their iCloud or apple account. But I cannot, for the life of me, understand the people who rabidly defend their brand (Apple, Samsung, and god forbid LG) as if there's no viable alternative.

I usually care about brand is because I know what a brand has to offer. I get somewhat familiar with the quality of different brands. Shopping is much easier that way. Of course this applies to items that have a large variety like clothing, electronics etc. If I know that xyz makes good shampoo that works for me I will stick to them because it is a headache to try a different brand. But if it's something generic like a simple shirt brand doesn't matter. Maybe, I'm the odd one but when it comes to items that I wear on myself I try to avoid stuff with prominent brand labelling on them.

I remember on one episode of Brain Games they talked about many options vs few options. They explained it using ice cream. In their example, there were two ice cream shops you could pick from. One had probably around 34 flavors and the other one only had around 5. On this show, they listed the flavors that each store had for sale. They then asked the audience which store they would pick to go to, and then predicted that most people would choose the more options store. But after that, they explained this slight paradox. All the while I sat there feeling smug because I had picked the first one because it was the only one with chocolate.

I find that brand loyalty gets more interesting the more complicated and expensive a product is. For instance, I am mostly loyal to Asus for computer products. But this isn't because I chose Asus and then just kept convincing myself it was the best. It's because I tried HP and Dell products before and had 1 bad experience with each of them and decided it was never worth buying another Dell or HP product. Now when I shop for anything PC related, those 2 brands are completely off the table for me, despite having had plenty of problems with my Asus products. The difference is that the Asus problems happened gradually and were more isolated. The HP and Dell problems were severe and catastrophic, causing me a lot of frustration and stress at once instead of a little frustration over many months. So it is not only brand familiarity, but also learned aversion to specific brands, that dictates my brand loyalty.

I think it's about trust. It's less likely a trusted opinion will waste your time, money, etc., even if you ultimately disagree. If you have a friend with similar tastes in food or entertainment, you will trust their recommendations. You trust that they will evaluate it fairly before deciding it is among the betters, and you trust your opinion of their opinion. With brands, we trust that their early products were their best work and this new thing also meets that minimum level of better than the competition. Commercials may remind us fun or aim to draw in new crowds, but it doesn't usually change our opinion of a friend/company we belief has certain standards. Some people don't like new things and won't welcome change. Most of us are ok with new products or experiences as long as it meets a minimum level of quality. Trust makes it easier to risk trying something new instead of something you know you like.

I'll admit I have some brand loyalty that I cling to at times (like, Coke > Pepsi and Target > Wal-Mart, though that last one I just hate Wal-Mart's business practices enough that it's more anywhere else > Wal-Mart) but I don't understand people getting hyper-partisan about it unless there's some objective problem that comes to light with one brand. I'll buy the foods I think taste good, and while I use brands and personal history to gauge the likelihood of a good personal experience I can usually recognize that it's totally subjective and other people might prefer other brands. If all a place has is Pepsi I'll just drink the Pepsi, it's not like it's any worse for me than Coke is and it only tastes marginally less good. (And real talk, root beer is better than either.) But for a familiarity argument, I can understand that affecting things really easily. Like, I prefer PCs to Macs because I can't understand how the Mac UI works, but I prefer iPhone to Android for the same reason (also the fact that basically every individual Android model has a different UI and none of them are particularly comprehensible to me doesn't help, lending credence to the overwhelming-choice argument). ...But my brand loyalty to Apple isn't strong enough that I'd never consider switching, especially because I hate iTunes, the native Music app from iOS 6 on, and the lack of a headphone jack on newer iPhones. I just don't have familiarity enough with Android UIs to feel I'd enjoy switching despite getting rid of those problems, even though I want to ditch my iPhone when it comes time to upgrade. (And Windows Phones have the most objectively awful-looking UI ever so that's out the window.)

If you put a bottle of cola in the sink and add milk to it (the brand doesn't matter, but it _has_ to be cola, any other flavor of soda won't do), wait for it to fizz down, put the cap on, rinse it off, put it in the fridge and leave it for at least an hour, it separates into a _top_ layer which is transparent and a _bottom_ layer which is opaque.

I seem to be a weirdo in this regard. I can't think of a single brand that I consciously go back to time and time again. I could not tell you what brand of clothes I'm wearing at a given moment, even if my life depended on it. I have switched brand the last four times I bought a smart phone. I don't own a car, so I have no affiliations with a particular car brand. I play the guitar, but mostly play a custom guitar made by friend who is a luthier. I'm sure, that there are some brands that I'm unconsciously biased towards... but, in general I just don't seem to care about brands.

The Mere Exposure Effect and Sunk Cost Fallacy are definitely why I prefer Xbox over Playstation. I grew up with Halo, which used to be an exclusive, so naturally I like Xbox more. However, the only reason I don't like the PS is that I only ever had two original consoles, where as I've always had the Xbox. To be honest, if I had money lying around, I'd buy all the consoles with the exception of anything Nintendo related (I'd love to buy all the things but I just have no interest in Nintendo, I'm sorry). Moreover, until Horizon Zero Dawn came out, I had no real reason to want a PS aside from Spyro the Dragon. As most people know, Spyro is a dead franchise. Despite my preferences, I do believe that loving all systems is the way to go.

I don't know... For me, as I shop, most of the time it's about the bottom line. When I see two products with similar capabilities, I generally go to the cheaper of the two, even doing the math to get to that cheaper-by-the-ounce in a quantitative sense. Of course, there are sales, rebates, and similar programs, which I'm always watching. When the chance comes (and I can justify/afford) I try something different just for the sake of it being different... at least, to me. Then I make my own assessment. On the other side, society also has "branding terms" for things. Like "band-aids", "googling", and "Kool-aid"... Band-aids aren't even bandages. They're dressings with adhesive... Bandages (as a term) is far to varied for the simple "band-aid" to fill, but tell someone to apply a "Band-aid" and they instantly know what you're talking about visually. The same applies to "googling", so even though it's probably not the first iteration of someone building a "search engine" type of service on the internet, the fact that there's a term for searching the web, "googling"... Means it will likely stand it's test of time as a legacy (barring some governmental or international demand to demolish it)... Kool-aid, is a brand, featuring an instant flavored drink mix with a fairly huge variety of flavors and colors... But we don't say, "get me the lemon flavored drink mix"... It's "I want the lemon kool-aid..." Or "You got any cherry kool-aid in the house?"... So there's a certain level of branded nomenclature in our language that should be recognized, even in the interest of not hypnotically following the sheeples into whatever the corporates have prescribed... lolz... Just notice that in my case, there's probably just the reference to some generic form of the product in question... It's pretty uncommon to find a brand that just does SO much better a job at putting adhesive on strips of cloth and gauze. :o)

I think bias is a big part of it. People want to be correct and will distort reality to make them correct. They'll invent reasons why their choices are the correct ones, then continue to apply that logic the next time they make a purchasing decision. Any change implies that their choice was somehow wrong and they're bad at making choices. People tend to think this way even when it makes no sense - which is why we see so many heated arguments over extremely subjective things like music preferences.

What about trust? Is that a factor? As in say, if you never had a bad experience with a brands product line, you return to it, trusting that the new model from them will be just as good, if not, better than the last.

I try a lot of brands; and usually continue to buy only the quality ones. Some, like Campbell soup for example, has been in my life for as long as I have been alive. It is part of life, not just my choice.

There's also brand loyalty on youtube. Ex. I prefer sci-show videos over any others, while those of you who like other channels like veritasium or any other channel will disagree strongly.

because its 'tried and true'. you wouldn't want to have apprehension every time you try something new if its going to be same (quality) or not. like the brand consistently puts out something you like, why not? baseline its how people deal with changes.

When it comes to food, I have very narrow tastes, so it's not really about brand loyalty so much as flavour familiarity. I know what I like and am risk averse to try anything new. But for other products, my rationale is generally, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If the thing I bought works well for me, then I consider it reliable and will stick to it until it fails me or my needs expand beyond their scope. Next time I need a new phone, I will likely stick to the same brand I have now, but only if they do what I need. I may not be typical.

I like Google better than Bing because Google brings up the most relevant results for me, and it has little to do with the interface. I use what just works well for me. As to the topic on hand, I use the brands that I've discovered work best for me, and I stay loyal to them until their products change enough to just stop working well for me, and then I start the cycle all over again. Plus, I try to go generic whenever I can to save a few bucks.

I remember someone talking about how coke changed their branding to "new coke" a while back and people were really upset. All the tests they did told them that the new coke tastes better, but people were actively campaigning against this change and calling for boycotts. Someone even admitted to liking new coke more, but he still wanted the old one back. I don't understand humans...

If you gave Me a Domino's pizza and a Pizza Hut pizza without branding, I could easily tell which is which from the terrible quality of the Pizza Hut one. Not all pizza is the same. Not all retailers are the same. Inferring that "all pizza is pizza" and the only difference is brand loyalty is stupid. Yes, there are people that are stupid and diehard fans of bad things, but the way you presented the argument ignores differences in procedures, recipes, and quality of sourced materials.

I've tried both Domino's and Pizza Hut here and they pale in comparison to the 2-3 best pizza restaurants in town. More expensive, smaller pizzas with less toppings on them. I'm hoping they'll either fail or realize they're doing it wrong and start doing it right, and that people don't go to say, Domino's, just because it's Domino's, but so far it's not how it's going. I think I'm putting too much faith in people.

DUDE. Starbucks coffee tastes *way better* than Dunkin (which is on-par with McDonalds, all of which is WAY BETTER than 7-11). I'm not even a coffee snob, so I was surprised to learn that I can actually taste the difference. Also, Pizza Hut has better pan/deep-dish pizza, but their Gluten Free pizza tends to be contaminated, whereas Domino's Gluten Free Pizza has never given me issues. So if I could eat Gluten, I'd want Pizza Hut, but since I can't, Dominos. I can't personally comment on McDonalds vs. Burger King, but my husband says BK's grilled burgers taste way different (and better, and bigger, and has more fat). This isn't loyalty to the specific BRAND, it's just loyalty to BETTER TASTING FOOD. This is why my husband and I have "brand loyalty" - because we go somewhere expecting the yummy. If/When our "favored" brands start serving crap food, we stop being loyal. I'm not saying these effects (described in the video) aren't real, just that they don't pertain to EVERYONE at ALL TIMES. Which is kinda how the research tends to be presented.

Target is just more reliable.

Why did you guys not even mention that I might be loyal to brands because I don't want to make a multivariable comparison every time I buy something complicated? For instance, I like apple because so far it has shown to be much more reliable than other brands. Off course I will be hard to convince otherwise, but that is mainly because I don't like having the same discussion over and over.

You don't know what you don't try. I am an Apple user, but never had an Apple computer until this past year. I didn't even know what all was possible until after I started using my computer with my phone and tablet etc... It is a whole new world. BUT I grew up on a PC and even in corporate jobs that is what they use most of the time. So you are stuck learning on what you have.

I don't know about you, but I always try to base my purchases either on clear stats I can use to compare products, past experiences, or when I'm ignorant on the product, I try to find a supposedly neutral online community. You'd be surprised at the differing opinions you will find on pretty much every product, be it headphones or carparts. The downside of trying to make well thought out purchases is that it takes a certain period of time for me to decide on the product I am going to buy, and it again takes time to compare prices and shipping or local options to get the best price I possible. I can understand why most people would resort to brands. It's far easier to find the thing you want based on its name.

I have a question: I prefer Brit's videos over Hank's because I feel like she is speaking in a less frenetic way. While Hank narrates a lot of videos that are of more interest to me, I often have to take multiple silent breaks, keep lowering the volume, or switch to watching something unrelated to give my ears a break. Is this a form of brand loyalty with people? To clarify, if it's revealed that both of you have the same speech speed and timbre, then am I just "loyal" to one individual? Their voice?
