Why are we pimping out the palace at £72?

Is it Regal or Right to demand so much of British subjects to visit the throbbing heart of our National identity, Buckingham Palace? Can a case be made to give access to people with British passports? (who have paid so much in taxation already for the revamp and the upkeep of the Royal residences?) Even if the king charges for duchy snacks and souvenirs (GiveHarryaHug mugs) I would love to know your thoughts about this!

This is about people being asked to fund something which is owned by the uk public and should at least be free for them, given that we’ve already paid for it. Yet it’s Meghan and Harry’s fault? If they are making so much money, they should not get any increase. British citizens should get the tickets for half price or free. The same is true with Windsor Castle. I think with tĥe past year they have done so little their cost should be reduced. They are going to say they were ill, but William wasn't, and he has done nothing of meaning this year. They seemed to have spent their time giving each other titles and dressing up in her late majesty's costume box from one end of the country to another in their helicopters. We are not getting value for our money. I think some of that money could go to give junior doctors improved pay. Their home is the most expensive council house in the land.

​@@Tina-gg7rkthat is entirely untrue. Canadians do not pay tax to the UK treasury. We do pay for the Governor General's salary expenses and home. We also pay for security if the Monarch visits or if another working Royal visits in an official capacity as the representative of the King. If a member of the BRF visits for a personal vacation we do not provide security. We haven't minted a new coin or printed a new note with the Kings likeness on it. We have never celebrated Commonwealth Day which was created in the mid seventies. The Union Jack is flown beneath the Canadian flag on Commonwealth Day and only on federal govt buildings.

The Crown Estate was paying for this renovation which had a budget of some 369 million pounds.

And the Crown Estate receives its income from where? From, for example, vast landholdings and rights that were obtained at the point of the sword. The RF descends from thieves and robbers, who gained their wealth through violence and terror. It should be abolished and all its accrued wealth given back to the state.

Seems silly to me, but the uk must be flush with money to be able to fund royalty. Palaces are like castles to me. They are all the same on the inside, more or less, so don’t interest me. I also prefer working buildings. For instance Prague castle is a working castle- as that’s where the government works out of. Wallenstein Palac has events and parties, same as Zofin.

It's mainly because people want to see it. Depending on your interests, theres a host of art, interior architecture, and furniture to admire. Much like when the King when he was PoW saved Dumfries house. If youre a cabinet making nerd such as myself there's pieces there you'd never see anywhere else. If I remember rightly, one piece had had it's drawers shut and no natiral light reached inside so the interior finish and colour of the Walnut is almost exactly as it was when Chippendale made it. The other thing about payments; we don't actually pay for it. The Royal Estates income does, with the monarch paying an effective 80% tax directly to the treasury before receiving a rebate on it. It just happens the rebate has been temporarily increased to pay for renovations, etc.

I'm ignorant on this topic but I think it depends on to who the money goes to. If it goes to the royal family it should be free for Brits. If it only goes to paying for the upkeep what otherwise would be paid for by taxes I think a small (≈5-10) entry fee would be fine

They probably think it's a good idea now and will use it to say the public interest in the royal family isn't dying. However, royalists will swoon at this first instance for curiosity but I think over time, the interest will die down and the cost will be reduced. The royal family should be careful cos with time people esp, the Republics will use this as a case to abolish the monarchy since people can access every bit of history within the buildings just like in France Lastly, the whole renovation is overwhelming (from what I've seen on TV). The red carpets are boring and then there are too many flowery elements. Ceramics or Chinese wares that are too flowery and then you have the wall papers that are also too flowery. Just too much going on. IMO

Indeed it’s costly but there are lots of simpering Royalists among the public who will stand for hours by a road side in all weathers only to have their ‘betters’ sweep past in a fleet of Bentleys all over in 30 secs. As to the King pimping out Bucks - why not? The Royals apparently hate the place - it is very blingy. I’m sure Charles & Camilla mostly still live in Highgate and I don’t begrudge them staying on there. As to the cost of a ticket - it’s cheap compared to Balmoral which for the first time is open this year to pre-booked guided tours at £100 per head of £150 if you have tea as well and as that is wholly owned by the ‘Firm’ all that revenue goes to the private pockets of HM
