Usually when people say an antagonistic character (not to be to be confused with a villain) is better than the mains in a show like this, it's a mean-spirited jab. In the case of Amaryllis though, speaking as someone who gave the show the benefit of the doubt wherever I could... yeah, it's just the truth. She's more consistently written than any other character in the show, she's frequently legitimately funny, and the actress does a good job with the delivery. Honestly she sounds like she's written by someone else entirely, and her transition from flat asshole to bratty, reluctantly helpful ally is reasonably believable. She's an in-Universe Statler and Waldorf, and a viewer bored with the stale character arcs WILL latch onto the life in her performance and the frustration in her dialogue.

In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace; and with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. He wore the crown of the Night Sentinels, and those that tasted the bile of his sword named him... the Doom Slayer. Tempered by the fires of Hell, his iron will remained steadfast through the passage that preys upon the weak. For he alone was the Hell Walker, the Unchained Predator, who sought retribution in all quarters, dark and light, fire and ice, in the beginning and the end, and he hunted the slaves of Doom with barbarous cruelty; for he passed through the divide as none but demon had before. And in his conquest against the blackened souls of the doomed, his prowess was shown. In his crusade, the seraphim bestowed upon him terrible power and speed, and with his might he crushed the obsidian pillars of the Blood Temples. He set forth without pity upon the beasts of the nine circles. Unbreakable, incorruptible, unyielding, the Doom Slayer sought to end the dominion of the dark realm. The age of his reckoning was uncounted. The scribes carved his name deep in the tablets of Hell across eons, and each battle etched terror in the hearts of the demons. They knew he would come, as he always had, as he always will, to feast on the blood of the wicked. For he alone could draw strength from his fallen foes, and ever his power grew, swift and unrelenting. None could stand before the horde but the Doom Slayer. Despair spread before him like a plague, striking fear into the shadow-dwellers, driving them to deeper and darker pits. But from the depths of the abyss rose The Great One, a champion mightier than all who had come before. The Titan, of immeasurable power and ferocity. He strode upon the plain and faced the Doom Slayer, and a mighty battle was fought on the desolate plains. The Titan fought with the fury of the countless that had fallen at the Doom Slayer's hand, but there fell the Titan, and in his defeat the shadow horde were routed. And in his terrible rancor between worlds and through time, the Hell Walker found the wretch who shall not be named, but in his heresy was loyal to his evil cause. The wretch adorned the Doom Slayer in a mighty armor, wrought in the forges of Hell, impenetrable and unyielding. With sword and shield of adamantine strength, the Doom Slayer set to banishing all that were left unbroken by his savagery to the void. Yet as the mighty Titan fell and dread engulfed the armies of Doom, the demon priests of the Blood Temples laid a trap to capture this scourge of Hell. Insatiable, even by the vanquishing of the Great One, the Hell Walker sought prey in the tombs of the Blood Keep. And blinded by his fervor, the lure drew him in. The priests brought down the temple upon the Doom Slayer, and in his defeat entombed him in the cursed sarcophagus. The mark of the Doom Slayer was burned upon his crypt, a warning to all of Hell that the terror within must never be freed. There he lies still, and ever more, in silent suffering.

I don't even care about any of the in your face representation, it just goes in one ear and out the other and doesn't detract from any of the enjoyment for me. If this was released on any TV network growing up VS a Crunchyroll Original (shitty company, business and production practices/choices, etc.) today, I'm sure HGS would be viewed in a strange yet positive and nostalgic light. Just like any other cartoon you remember watching growing up that looking back, wasn't nearly as good as you remember it was, but is still fun. I'm bored and want to rewrite this scene as like legitimate dark fantasy horror. This is effectively a oneshot in the name of practice and fun. Part 1 The rain grew colder as Thyme neared the cave, eventually seeming to ignore the protection of her cloak to leave her feeling as if she were wading through half frozen river as thunder cracked like gunshots overhead, and howling of the wind became laced with a moaning cry that sounded almost human. She told herself it was good, that it meant she was close to her objective, but as the cold freezing her blood crept closer to her heart, it fed a seed of doubt, or maybe something far more than doubt, but she wouldn't admit, not even to herself, that she was afraid. Back at the academy, Rosemary and Amaryllis tried to bide time as the day crept on, but it felt more and more like the passage of time itself had been rained out. Glancing out the window, Rosemary watched as tree limbs swept wildly in the wind, and shingles would rattle, almost as if shivering, before being snatched from the academy's roof. "You trying to have a flashback to your origin story or something?" Amaryllis teased as she leaned against the doorframe. "Not this time." Rosemary absentmindedly admitted before blushing and shaking her head. "I mean, no! I wouldn't- I'm not-!" "Relax." Amaryllis laughed. "You're not the first wannabe to get it in their head that they're some destined hero." "I don't have anything like that 'in my head'!" Rosemary argued. "I just..." she seemed to sadden a bit, losing her usual sweetness that so often annoyed Amaryllis. "Look, I have... well... reasons." she clenched her fists and went to continue. "And I don't-" "Okay, I'm sorry, chill." Amaryllis gave her best attempt at a soothing tone. "Would it help if I said I was curious as what was actually on your mind?" "Nothing." Rosemary asserted. "It's stupid." "So are most people's thoughts. You still didn't answer my question." "Right..." Rosemary sighed. "Well I just got to thinking... a- about something I heard a long time ago." "Don't tell me your gonna try and scare me with some old folk tale." Amaryllis teased, causing Rosemary to turn away in silence. "Geeze your sensitive." she muttered before addressing her again. "I wasn't gonna tell ya to stop, ya know? I'm just..." She wasn't quite sure how to put it to words, at least not in a way that sounded good. She tried, desperately, to pull some way to explain from within her mind, but as always seemed to be the case, she just found herself frustrated, but next to it was something else that left a harsh closing sensation in her chest. "It's just how you are." Rosemary said flatly. "Some- something like that." Amaryllis shrunk a bit, but stepped from her perch to put herself closer to her... 'acquaintance' if nothing else. "But uh... seriously... you can tell me if you want. I umm..." a strange tension crept up her back, as if she were somehow doing something wrong. "I promise I won't interrupt." Initially, Rosemary's gaze was skeptical, but seeing how small and awkward Amaryllis seemed, barely even able to make eye contact and looking like she was expecting to be struck, she couldn't help but give her to benefit of the doubt. The crack of a twig barely reached Thyme's ears, and only did due to her training and specially attuned hearing. Bolting around, she only saw the shadow infested woods behind her. Another flash of lighting washed the scene in a blink of ghostly light however, and she saw, all around her, barren tree limbs that all bore an uncanny resemblance to an army of clawed hands, all grasping for purchase as they flailed in desperation. She turned away and went on however, and the cries in the wind became ever more lifelike.
@JustinTK4162 жыл бұрын
Part 2 "Alright." A small grin emerged as Rosemary's mind somehow connected Amaryllis's pose to that of a scolded puppy, though she'd later wonder as to the implications of this. "But I'm gonna hold ya to that. No interruptions, deal?" "Deal." Amaryllis brightened. "But I will fall asleep if you bore me." Rosemary laughed. "I'd be a little worried if this put you to sleep." Looking back outside, she pondered a second the best way to begin the story. "You ever hear the legend of Crestfallen Cave?" There it was. She was still a few hundred meters out, but Thyme could see it. She'd made it. A stroke of doubt wormed through her mind however. Had she made it? More so, what was she doing here? She knew she'd set out with a goal, but it seemed less and less clear as to what that had been. Almost as if the rain had eroded her mission from her memory. She knew however, that she had to reach the cave. She had to talk to... She had to talk to... From a flash above, a split second of light haunted the scene, and in that moment, Thyme saw countless shadows that seemed out of place, or far to like the silhouette of some beast. But what struck her more than anything wasn't a shadow, but the hazy frame of a figure waiting in the mouth of the cave. Suddenly, the cold seemed to finally grab at her heart, and she struggled to breath as the howling in the wind shifted from a faint cry, to a disembodies laughter. She needed to leave. Admitting to herself that she was in over her head, Thyme told herself that she HAD to get out of there. Whatever this was, whatever it had to offer, it wouldn't be worth anything if she got herself killed. She wondered then... Why was she still walking toward the cave? "That place?" Amaryllis mused. "I'm pretty sure that place IS a ghost story." "But do you know what I'm talking about?" Rosemary asked. "Not specifically. I didn't really pay mind to ghost stories or folk tales. I had enough to..." Amaryllis glanced aside and cringed. "So what's the story?" Rosemary began. "So you know how some places are rich in magic? Well, the cave was one of them, and a LONG time ago, powerful wizards and guardians would go there to perform enchantments, and witches would do rituals, and quite a few other parties were interested in the cave. "Well, one day, following the turn of the new year, an ambitious sorcerer payed the cave a visit. Their goal was, in short, to open a portal to another dimension. With their ego having been fed almost all their life, they had started to think themselves capable of anything, even on the level of a god. So they studied the realms, learning every little arcane leak and supernatural fissure, and how they related to magic that was more wieldable. "As their study went on however, it became apparent that creating a proper gateway would be reckless. You see, when you open a portal, it's like opening a door. If it's opened to somewhere similar to where you're at, it's not too hard to close, but say forces on the other side start to spill in. Then it's kind of like trying to close a door back in..." Rosemary gestured outside. "Well, a rainstorm. The other realm can offer resistance, making it difficult or impossible to close. Even with their inflated ego, the sorcerer knew they poking at very unprecedented territory, and there was a REASON, it was so often feared." Thyme had about been reduced to panic. She couldn't feel or control any of her limbs, and it felt like she stuck on the edge of suffocating. What was this thing? What kind of spell had it put on her? Mustering her will, she tried to resists, to drag her body out of this trance, but it seemed and utterly mute effort. She then realized the only thing she could even try to do was scream, but then who would hear her? In the end all she'd probably be doing is giving this thing some sick satisfaction. Marching closer to the cave, she saw a pair of glimmering white eyes in the darkness, then jagged teeth that were bore in a twisted smile. A face then started to materialize from the stony abyss, and seeing it, her resolve faltered and she tried to scream. With the cold having eaten so deep into her however, her voice seemed to have been muted. She struggled though, fighting against the spell and exhaustion, she could feel a flicker of warmth in her chest, and she focused on it.

Part 3 "So," Rosemary continued. "They arrived at a new solution. A 'different' experiment of sorts, but one that they still saw as utterly profound. They weren't going to open a portal to the realm, but they were going to talk to whatever was inside. Through their study, they'd devised a means to make severable psychic link between two entities, and the spell would work regardless of any difference in species or cognitive ability. Combining this with what they'd learned about the realms, they a devised a ritual that, on paper, was almost fool proof. The only issue was that the person link would have to be cut by someone other than the person who was connected to the entity on the other side, and that's were it got messy. "Eventually however, they found someone they could use, someone who trusted them wholeheartedly, and believed that their research could change the way the world looked at and used magic." "So kind of like New Magic?" Amaryllis asked, looking uncertain, even a little afraid. "They were doing all of this for what New Magic did basically?" "From what I understand, and what I've read about the other realms, something like this would make New Magic look laughable, like a fad at best." Rosemary explained. "Anyway, so this student of theirs agrees to be a volunteer, and they go to the cave. The sorcerer begins their spell, and the student goes deathly silent before telling them that they feel something. Initially, they're overjoyed, saying they feel something's mind, it's being on the other side, but then they get quiet. The sorcerer asks what's wrong, and not sounding like themselves at all, the student asks 'Who are you?'. "The sorcerer then asks if they're from the other side, but the student just asks 'Where is this?' The sorcerer tells whatever their talking to that they're in Crestfallen cave, a location in their world. The student then asks them 'So you showed us your world... willingly?' "Realizing they made a mistake, the sorcerer breaks the connection, and the student goes into a fit and passes out. A few seconds later, they wake up and stare blankly at the sorcerer, then start to laugh. Asking what's wrong, and what's so funny, the sorcerer then pales as the student continues to speak in that strange voice. 'You think that's all it would take?' the student asks. 'This creature's mind was a book of mud, from which we ripped the pages and left our own. While maybe not connected to our realm, we are still here, and we are hungry.' "The sorcerer then tried to kill their student, striking them with what should've been a fatal spell, but the entity only laughed before fighting the sorcerer, who wound up having to flee the cave, leaving their possessed student behind. From that day forward, everyone who went to Crestfallen cave, or to the woods around it, would give a similar story. They area seemed haunted, and they would run into a creature unlike any monster they faced, and no matter how they tried to fight it, it would only mock them before using twisted and otherworldly magics to decimate anything that crossed their path. "Occasionally, survivors of these attacks would say that it spoke to them, warning them that 'We are but splinters, lost and needing to feed, but the eyes watch your world with wet teeth, and THEIR hunger... will consume all.'" Thyme was maybe a dozen meters from the cave, and could see the outline of a stretched, humanoid figure standing in the darkness. Standing much taller than herself, its body seemed a putrid morph of gray and black as hunched with twitching claws dangling limply above the rocky ground beneath. As she drew closer, the pulled smile seemed to grow beneath ragged hair that whipped in the wind like body of inky tendrils. The creature then lowered, its mouth opening and pale eyes brightening in anticipation. Then it lunged.

Part 4 The filth laden monstrosity flew through their air, pale jaw agape as empty eyes were wide with morbid excitement. Pulling against the spell with all her might, Thyme could feel the warmth of her own agency climbing into her throat, but part of her mind told her it was a mute point, and in a grim realization, she closed released herself. She decided that, out of everything she could hold as a final thought, her friends seemed the most deserving. They were the only people who ever seemed to really believe in her, to really support her, and yet here she was alone. Carrying on as though she actually knew what she was doing, like she could actually be some kind of hero. A clap of thunder rung through the air, and in its wake, an enraged howl was sung before a voice reached her ears. "Thyme!" Lighting flashed, giving her a glimpse of a short, stout figure with blonde hair holding a hammer that was caked in an inky blood. "Thyme! Run!" "Parsley?" She asked in disbelief, but her inquiry was cut short as the young dwarf was sent sailing across the granite, struck by the creature's pole like arm. Rapidly regaining control of herself, Thyme drew her bow and did her best to take aim at the horror in front of her. Letting an arrow loose, it was dodged almost casually as the thing's seemingly humanoid body snaked aside before positioning itself for another pounce. As it lunged however, Thyme was able to duck beneath it into a forward roll, turning once she found her feet beneath her and taking aim at the creature once again. Much like last time however, it evaded the projectile. Stretching its arms wide, it let a deafening screech as two seams tore in the murky gray skin of its chest, and out sprouted a pair of skeletal arms, ending in scythe like talons and coated in an oily black blood that glistened in a hollow flash of lightning. It lowered for another lunge, and Thyme knew this one would be avoided so easily. Before it could take off however, a heavy impact took its knee from under it. With a cry of rage and pain, it flailed for but a second before twisting back to its feet and swiping a claw at Parsley. Throwing herself over the attack, the girl landed and threw a heavy, upward swing at the thing's chest, but found her hammer trapped in the grasp of one of its gray arms. It then opened its jaw inhumanly wide, causing the flesh of its cheeks to rip before its neck stretched and its head moved to plummet at its new appetizer. The creature's attention off of her, Thyme found an opportunity to set an arrow into the thing's new morphed neck, causing it to stagger its throat was cleanly pierced. It didn't howl or cry however. Instead, it merely froze allowing Parsley to wrench her weapon from its grasp and bolt over to Thyme's side as she let arrow after arrow into its body. First into the knees, the joints of its arms, then another into one of its empty, pale, eyes. Then it just hung there, standing a bit more haggardly, but standing still. It then spoke in a chorus of voices. "Was that supposed... to hurt?" Grasping its head with its two upper hands, the creature snatched it from its shoulders, taking a length of its spine with it. Its upper chest then split with a snap that rivaled the thunder, and as rain washed away the spilling black blood, rows of teeth were revealed to line the 'Y' shaped split in the creature's body. Dragging one of its talons across its belly, the resulting gash widened as a massive, bloodshot yellow eye shifted into the opening. The ear piercing taunt of disembodied laughter then filled the air, prompting Thyme and Parsley to lock eyes in horror. "What do we do?" Parsley pleaded on the edge of panic. "I don't know!" Thyme screamed, turning her attention back to their foe as it rushed forth in blur. Its fanged gape was around the two in an instant, but at it snapped shut, a silver barrier sprung into existence, and the maw bent around the rippling sphere with a meaty crack. The flesh then sizzled and popped against the field, but this only prompted it to seep across their ward until the teeth locked together around it, and the blood leaking from the singeing tears in its form pooled around the base to form a seal against the stone beneath it. While they may be protected, Thyme and Parley had effectively been eaten. As they looked deeper into the creature, towards where the eye had rolled into its belly, the pair saw the wickedly grinning face emerge from the seeping murk of its insides, and their eyes locked with its own dead gaze. "Guardians..." it cooed, though its mouth was unmoving, and its voice vibrated from the popping flesh outside of their barrier. "Why... have... you... come..." "I'll never understand why you country folk feel the need to come up with these dumbass stories." Amaryllis said shaking her head, though she seemed to jump a little a clap of thunder shook the window in its pane. She gritted her teeth and glared out the window. "I- I mean, don't you have enough to worry about out there? And even 'if' someone got the idea to try some as needless as and moronic as that 'sorcerer's' experiment, the only people with that kind of power would be-" "The Triad." Rosemary interrupted. "Well... yeah..." Amaryllis sounded a bit uncertain. "I mean I- Yeah!" She scowled and found her resolve. "And they wouldn't do something as contrivedly moronic as that! What even got you thinking about that?" "As I said, it was stupid." Rosemary glanced aside. "It's..." Amaryllis grunted. "It's weird!" She waved a hand dismissively and went to walk away. "Guess it shows me. Try to be nice to your gumball looking ass and you tell me that shit to get me... just..." She stormed out the door, then slammed it behind her. End And that's it for now. Can't say if I'll ever feel like continuing it. As I said, it was mostly just a fun little thing to practice with, but I am in the process of writing a fantasy story that's basically if took Frozen and Fallout New Vegas, put them in a blender, and added shots of Dark Souls and Elder Scrolls, so if you'd like to wish me luck or offer encouragement, say so in reply or subscribe to my channel! I'll definitely post something when (and I'm blood screwingly determined to keep that a when and not an 'if') I get the first volume of chapters finished. Might also make some fun videos between now and then... I don't know. Been meaning to do something on that front for awhile now. But regardless, thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed! Stay safe and keep your hearts hopeful!

So thanks to the comments TIL Gremlin Kid's real name is Amaryllis, and tbh I'm not even sure if it's her or Slime Boy who's the most popular. And I hope the creators don't notice because I feel like if they gave these characters more attention they'd only ruin them.

A lot of times the animations feel too "robotic" when they're supposed to be thrilling, but then again, that only makes this show look more like a kid's cartoon.
