With the recent success of my Anxiety analysis video, seems fitting if I were to dive into another emotion that has a much different story to tell.

That sort of matches what embarrassment is, aside from the character just having an embarrassing appearance. Being embarrassed is intimidating, and we do a lot to avoid it, but it usually doesn't hurt us in the end.

Embarrassment started out as Anxiety’s enforcer, but realizes that he feels bad about what’s he’s done and what’s right for Riley, that’s why I like him, he’s a sweet guy, he just needs better friends, hence why he helps sadness since they relate to each other

i thought of it as how it was shown, we often hide sadness out of embarrassment, because anxiety needs it to look like riley isnt sad about leaving her friends behind. They more like concepts, not very much characters.

I think that embarrassments growth in the movie reflects Riley irl, like how she’s embarrassed to admit she needs help and to realize her ways of impressing Val are destorying her mental health. Nothing in these movies aren’t thought out, every story element is a metaphor for something happening to Riley

Something I really appreciated was the ending. The movie shows that she didn’t have an anxiety attack because Val and her friends are bad people, she was just doing too much to impress them. They show that just because they’re older kids and unknowingly swayed Riley away from her friends, they still just genuinely wanted Riley to be comfortable and wanted to bond with her. I appreciate that so much

Just like all the other emotions, he also helps Riley in his on way, his job is to tell Riley whenever her social status is being diminished, so she can prevent from it repeating, one thing I noticed is that just before he finds Sadness he is looking at a memory, specifically the memory of Riley's old friends being annoyed at her for the whole sarcasm scene, so you could say Riley is feeling embarrassed in hindsight for how she treated her friends, and right after that Embarrassment starts helping Sadness

I wish Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui were fleshed out more and shown how harmful they could be if they go overboard, like Anxiety. Riley could be scared of embarrassing herself by messing up during practice, thus no longer wanting to do anything that would put her in an uncomfortable situation and losing motivation. Riley could have felt envious that her friends were going to the same school without her and envious of how good Val is (rather than only admiring her), thus making her want to be better at hockey and make new friends. Ennui could be Riley giving up- she no longer has interest in hockey after all the stress she is going through

@@blackqweenmars This. Feeling embarrassed is not the same as being scared of feeling embarrassed. Anxiety was the one trying to prevent Riley from embarrassing herself, with little to no success. Embarrassment happens when one does something considered embarrassing and is perceiving the negative evaluation of others, real or imagined. He never anticipates an embarrassing event he reacts to it. He acts an an exclamation point and an appeasement gesture to Riley's fumbles and suppresses said behavior to prevent it from happening in the future, like when Riley made a cringy first impression to Val, fooling around with her best friends, fake laughing at their jokes and pointing out a band she likes that the others considered outdated. He has his purpose and he does it well, even if he's not persistent about it

You keep posting this same comment and I still disagree. Idk how any of that would tie into the themes of feeling "not good enough" without it being cluttered and bloated. What we got works and it works well Anxiety was the main factor of the themes of feeling imperfect but all the other emotions had their roles even if it's minor and tie into the themes masterfully. Envy was the main motivator for what Riley wants an ambitions most of the time and feeds into Anxiety's desire for Riley to fit in. Envy is the one to point out the objects of desire and Anxiety pushes Riley to attain it and projects the consequences if she fails, as such, they make a great combo for feelings of inadequacy Ennui is a regulator for Riley's attitude and enthusiasm, and masks her true feelings to seem more "cool", such as acting nonchalant to Val's request to join her group, is responsible for making Riley act like she doesn't like the band she likes and also is responsible for bridging distance between her and her parents in the ending. She falls into the theme of "acting like someone you aren't" As for Embarrassment, feeling embarrassed is not the same as being scared of feeling embarrassed. Anxiety was the one trying to prevent Riley from embarrassing herself, with little to no success. Embarrassment happens when one does something considered embarrassing and is perceiving the negative evaluation of others, real or imagined. They had their roles and they do it well, even if it's minor. Their roles are greater then the sum of their parts

Because what people want is for a villain to go with the story if there needs to be one. King Magnifico from Wish was billed as a classic disney baddie. What we got was a sympathetic villain who got a fate far worse than what he deserved. Frozen didn’t need a villain and then the Hans twist came out of nowhere. In Inside Out 2, all the characters and roles make sense and there’s no need for a villain. So we as an audience just want things to make sense and flow which is what Inside Out 2 does.

@@MATAX5 but the bad thing about the way Magnifico is written is that he does have valid points about limiting the wishes on the grounds that some of them are too vague. His only mistake is that he doesn’t give the wishes back to people (possibly again to maintain order in the place he founded together with his wife after his hometown was destroyed). And if it was shown that the people are like zombies after losing their wishes, I can see why Magnifico keeping them would be bad, but that’s far from what we are presented in the movie. In addition, Magnifico didn’t even know keeping the wishes would give him power until after opening the evil book. That’s why he fails as a villain. All the pieces were there to make him straight up evil or to make him a sympathetic baddie. Disney didn’t commit in either direction and that’s the problem. Even the way his wife reacts after he was trapped in his own staff doesn’t make sense. She was happy after spending years with him, loving him and being his voice of reason. Compare that with Waternoose and Sulley. Although Waternoose had to be arrested, Sulley was clearly shown to be unhappy about it because they had been friends for years.

Embarrassment is the term that Pixar decided to go with, but generally in introductory psychology this feeling is referred to as shame. In some ways his actions in going against anxiety reference the role that our natural sense of shame has in counterbalancing the extremity in any one emotion. The natural role of our sense of shame is more oriented towards outward behavior as opposed to inward. Every other emotion focuses on how Riley interprets things in relation to herself, embarrassment’s focus is on actions as they relate to others. Often we repress emotions *out of* a sense of shame or embarrassment. Puberty tends to be a time where we experience a lot more of it because it’s when we gain a wider sense of social dynamics.

(SPOILER ALERT) Embarrassment also realizes that the things that anxiety is doing aren’t as good as they could be the moment they all blatantly lie about the group that Riley likes, and consequently reject her friends completely. When he decides to help Sadness, before catching on her, he’s looking at the memory of that specific moment… maybe he even felt embarrassment as he realized that it was wrong. Embarrassment is there to protect you from essentially doing something super stupid in public, and it helps entering society as a functional being (atleast that’s what the emotion “thinks”), maybe he realized that rejecting your friends would make it bad for everyone in a moment like this, and that the plan of anxiety can actually cause the harm that he’s protecting Riley from (like lying about your favorite group and then being catched on the act). At last, these emotions are trying to protect Riley from something that could happen, since they’re by the influence of anxiety, and embarrassment ultimately decides that maybe the path they’re taking is not the one best for Riley (and… well, he was right).

Anxiety can definitely be overbearing so it’s natural for embarrassment to avoid conflict and just go with it. But I’m happy he stood up for what’s right and helped out sadness at the end. I agree that it’s difficult to write a sympathic antagonist. We don’t think anything of it at the time but when you break it down then it makes you appreciate the writers even more.

Isn’t Anxiety a sympathetic antagonist as well? Because she just wanted to protect Riley and prepare her for her future, unaware of the consequences of her actions until she completes her “I’m not good enough” Sense of Self. Envy also has good intentions and had no idea Anxiety’s plans were doing more harm than good until near the climax

If you do make an Ennui video, you should mention the Oxford definition, "a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement." This is the opposite from what I thought it was from the movie, a force that encourages laziness and acting cool, when it's actually the force that takes someone out of being lazy because of dissatisfaction with it.
