No matter the length of the trip, I’ve noticed that my brakes have been overheating and creating a burnt smell. Follow along as I investigate the reasons on my Ford F-150, and go over the main causes you should look out for. Thanks for watching!

You should pump breaks really hard and then try to turn the wheel. if it gets stuck release the bleeder cap. if break fluid spits out and the wheel frees up loose there is an issue in the hose. If it just drips fluid instead of spitting a lot out its pistions sticking

Its 99% guide pins. They need replacement or grease. 👍

I’ll give this a shot. I’ve had this issue for last 6 months. Literally taken my tire off about every day for last two months. Local police probably thought I was smuggling drugs. Lol. Right front wheel would get very hot, and burnt smell. Then yesterday the truck started pulling hard to the right. Pulled over and there was smoke pouring out. I thought it might be the pins with rubber boot sticking, but it’s still overheating today. I’ll give this a try, but I’m thinking my issue may be the actual pistons sticking.

This is sadly some funny 💩, as we must be living in a parallel universe, being I’ve been in the same boat but with my ole dodge….Your comment got a good chuckle outta me which makes all the hassle at least somewhat comical now. Gonna try tackling mine one more time, well maybe 2 if tomorrow doesn’t work🤪… hope you figured out your issue… have you cracked open the bleeder valve and seen if any comes out? Possibly the rubber hosing…. I’m hoping it’s my pins with the rubber boot. Tried lubing inside the boot without taking out the metal cylinder and lubed the pins. My only other idea is doing both sides if doing pads, that way both get even pressure🤔

@@TheDustinMaxwell pull out the metal tubes that are inside the rubber boot. Lube the inner boot/outer side of the tube, put the tubes back into the rubber boots, then lube the pins up, but leave about 1/4” on the pins near the threads, empty of lube. It’ll smear onto it once in the boots…. My pins were not very well lubed up, and the tube where the pins slide into, weren’t as well. Once that got fixed, everything seems to be better. Don’t use those sm grease packets, buy the little tub of brake caliper n pin lube, wanna say it’s silicone base…. My issues seem to be much better since

My caliper lube is black, and it shouldn’t make the rubber boots deteriorate when being mixed with what’s in the boots…. Also, when compressing the calipers, I open the master cylinder cap in the engine compartment, wrap a rag around the neck of it, incase when compressing the caliper in, the rag will catch any brake fluid. If the caliper doesn’t retract easily, or if it leaks from the round rubber part, you definitely need new calipers. I’m no big gearhead, but been messing around with em for many years, just a woodworker that likes tinkering with stuff, one of which is my truck. Definitely do both sides as soon as possible too, I’ve been dumb in the past and did one side and waited a year or more until going to do the other side…. Wish ya luck, you’ll get it figured out. Just make sure you lube those parts, all while keeping it off the rotors and inner side of the pads.

I take my channel locks to the cylinder tubes that are inside the rubber boots that flex in and out. I pull the tubes out with the locks, now if they’re seized up pretty badly, they may not wanna move much at all. You really need to wiggle and pull on the tubes to break loose if they’re in that stage of dryness. When you encounter one that’s lubed up still, they move back n forth easily and pop right outta the boots. Just make sure, when pulling the tubes out, that you push the boots inward a bit to expose the metal tube, get some grippers on the metal and start wiggling n pulling. You don’t want to rip those rubber boots, but if you do, don’t worry they sell em and they’re a cpl bucks…..

Be sure you put the pad with the two humps on the inside. If you mix up the pads it can cause the caliper to slightly kick out at the top and drag the outer pad.
