Never heard of APM before, but it seems to make sense. It’s like keeping your mind moving fluidly and not letting your focus get stagnant while also moving efficiently . That “skating” movement breaks my mind when I drill it.though; I have trouble keeping the momentum up. Thanks for another great video. Anyone else having serious problems with the sprinting glitch

This video showed I still have more to learn about it myself: * Jumping w/o holding forward as Toby kept mentioning * From paying attention to the gameplay shown (again, as this video suggested) - Resetting from a slide back to a sprint and sliding again just before going up steps at maximum speed) * Hope the above wasn't too distracting - just trying to use the opportunity to collect my thoughts. See the Feynman Technique for learning. That all said, trust me when I tell you that it will feel much more comfortable and natural with time.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I sometimes get frustrated with my teammates taking a long time to loot, especially when we end up third-partied because of it. Back when I first started watching you, I incorporated the sliding move (and "moving like a wild man" in general) as a normal part of my gameplay. It has made a huge difference.

Amazing video Toby! This is actually the exact way I got better in my games, I ran solo vs squads with the intention to find as many players as possible and end fights quickly. running the same predictable route faster and faster and try to add in more moves to fill the gaps makes you a better player for two reasons. You make decisions and actions faster, and you process and discard irrelevant information quicker. Expect to lose your games and just focus on making yourself super efficient and eventually the right plays just become very obvious since you have a trained eye. Still I'm very surprised that anyone made a video about this concept in an FPS game. Thanks for bringing something new to the FPS scene! :D

What an extremely instructive video for those who didn't know about it, and a good refresher for those who are aware of APM. I have a background in playing strategy games since I was like 9 years old, but true to your statement, it is not really spoken about much in Fortnite. I never used to do this until recently, and the results have been absolutely insane. Thank you for always providing us with such instructional content!

Love this and YES! Something that almost cut my stamina consumption in half on PC was turning off the Toggle Sprint button. This allowed me to simple sprint and let off the sprint when jumping. I could then sprint and the jumps didn’t consume stamina at all 😮

I've been playing rts games for a very long time and the main ways i've found to increase my apm are 1. Be very consistent and practice weird scenarios. In fortnite weird scenarios be things like scuffed edits or any buttons or button sequence you have an awkward time pressing, a lot of people have higher apm than their average when they're doing things in their comfort zone or things they've already practiced a ton but it's when they get in scenarios theyre not used to that their apm starts dropping especially under pressure so practice those. 2. Increase your typing speed, and the good thing about this one is that it helps your finger speed and your accuracy with your keyboard across all games, this is probably the thing that helps me the most, i'd almost say that if you're fast at typing you probably won't need to worry about apm that much in games.

The "touching grass" aspect was definitely apparent to me today. Since I went to the gym a little later than usual, I felt better when I started to play, and my second game was a five-kill win (no bots killed by the way) where I was hitting nearly every shot at 100 metres and out, on top of successfully keeping tabs on a medallion player and an unclaimed Forecast Tower. Having a healthy lifestyle can get you extremely far, and not enough people seem to realise. The advice regarding inventory management is also crucial, and part of why everyone should experiment with the preferred item slots setting. I'm extremely likely to fumble early-game fights when I'm carrying random loot and not my ideal loadout, but the odds of that happening vanish the moment I get my preferred three weapons. It's especially critical for an avid bush camper such as myself, since realising it's time to swap has given me two wins recently. Lastly, have you considered making a video about the light ammo weapons of the season? I strongly believe both the Thunder Burst SMG and the Ranger Pistol are very strong alternatives to the Striker AR (on top of being much easier on the ammo usage). I guess the Lock-On Pistol can be included too, but it's a little too gimmicky for general use.

1:04 agree 100%. This is why the ranked system is just broken; it relies on too many games for a persons, rank to settle. I can watch a person play for 30 seconds and know if their general movement/combat is good. This lack of sitting still is the best thing for newbies to learn. I’m playing with a new guy now and he is CONSTANTLY getting sniped because he cannot move while aiming, etc

Some thoughts: Is there any benefit to using your remaining stamina by simply sprinting on your way to a vehicle, or is there no speed difference vs skating? What are the pros and cons of slide jumping vs hurdling? As someone more focused on Battle Passes vs winning matches, I have a hard time getting myself to destroy floors as it doesn't seem to grant as much XP as opening containers. Thoughts?

I was first exposed to the term APM years ago in Warcraft 3 (yes it was years ago). My experience with APM is that although it can be an indicator of skill since you're doing more, it definitely WAS faked a lot when it started to be a statistic that high level teams and players cared about. In that game they would switch to different buildings or units constantly, even if they weren't doing anything productive with those actions just to keep APM up. In fortnite, this would be comparable to swapping weapons a million times just for higher APM. It also is not a direct indication of who will win, since performing more actions does not mean you're performing the correct actions for the situation. Sometimes just sitting and chilling where you're at is actually a smart strategy and can get you a win. That will be a low APM situation, but that doesn't mean it's the wrong play. So although I agree you can to some extent tell if a player is good just by watching them, ultimately the most important stats are going to be wins, and if you care about it, kills as well. Positioning is also a super important skill and this is not something APM can calculate. And of course aim. TL:DR APM is only a piece of the puzzle
@TobyWanShinobi
@TobyWanShinobi 8 ай бұрын
For sure - there are a lot more important things than APM, but it's definitely a part of being a "good player" , you need to be able to have high apm when the moment calls for it.

@@TobyWanShinobiright on, just gonna Kobe drill it. I like APM for making sure I improve on overall performance. I'm gonna start paying attention to that. I've recently started tracking my own metric for combat performance, my DMG Given/Taken. Just jot it down at the end. This is especially useful for trios or squads where I might have lower K/D because I dished out 180 DMG per enemy we saw, but my teammates cleaned up most of the kills. Regardless, if I hurt a lot of players and scare them off, I find that I make it deeper into the match, or I get the K, either way it's a better overall moneyball metric for me. I haven't been doing it long enough to have many data points, but I feel like my placement is correlated.

Without knowing there was a name for this, i already knew it was a thing just from spectating good players and they ALL do exactly what you describe in this video. I feel like im always going to be at a huge disadvantage against PC players.
@TobyWanShinobi
@TobyWanShinobi 9 ай бұрын
In this regard, PC and controller are nearly the same. The inventory is a little quicker on PC but not a whole lot. Watch a really good controller player stream and you'll see what I mean. The movement is just as easy on controller as PC as long as you have a paddled controller - otherwise it is a bit more awkward, but still very doable.

@@TobyWanShinobi Yea i just have a standard controller. One thing that annoys me the most, is not being able to get the smooth and efficient close combat moves. Cuz on controller you have to press down left stick to sprint while also having to move around. @ShawnsLoop
@ShawnsLoop 9 ай бұрын
@@GypsyGorilla This was an "Aha!" moment for me too. I thought you always had to CONTINUE pressing the left stick in the direction you wanted to slide. You don't. After you start sliding you can let the stick go back to center (or what I call neutral) and you'll continue sliding in that direction. You'll also notice that while doing this, you can rotate with the right-stick to turn and look back on (sliding while looking back). Now, if you want to adjust the slide in anyway mid slide, you will need to re-engage the left-stick again. For Tobey's technique you would....Move forward - Sprint - Slide - (prior to jumping) let left-stick go to center - jump - then time the slide again just before you land. You will slide slightly slower as the act of jumping while no longer pushing the stick forward will cancel out the sprint. So when you "re-slide" on landing, it won't be a full sprint slide. So keep that in mind. Yup, just practice and play around with it. If you have a creative map that shows the stamina bar, try that.

The majority of this I learned to do habitually at just the beginning of my time in Fortnite, but it really started after Chapter 2. My ADHD just makes this automatic to me so I guess it is kinda a superpower 😤😂

I have to show this to my son so he can understand why I can't keep up with him. My APM has gone up a LOT over the past two years, but it's not at this level, yet.

There are FPS games where APM matters a lot: classic arena shooters like Quake or UT, with their high movement speed and stuff. Also there's normal Fortnite BR where ofc you get destroyed by some quad editers 😂

Good vid. Quite right, too. I watched FazeReplays last night and thought it was amazing how quickly he got around the map, whilst also looking everywhere, killing many, and swapping items. Thanks for shining a light on this important aspect of Fortnite and indeed life.

One of the tell tales of very good players is basically they can't 'sit still' or idle no matter what they're doing. One of the clear examples are when you see them or even when you are near them and you hear them rapidly switching weapons for absolutely no reason whatsoever. That rapid weapon switching is just more muscle memory being built in in the background. You can notice almost any good player from Tfue to Ninnja to most in between doing the same rapid quick switches. This is a great point to analyze, and I think I am going to go through a video of my own to check out my own APM and see what we can find.

I found your videos recently and they have been almost like a lifeline for me on improving my skills. Im an old school gamer who's never played fortnite until this past year. When my 12y/o asked if Id play with her, I wasnt sure what to expect. I had only heard it was a kids shooter game. When I looked past the cosmetics, silly emotes and bright colors, I quickly realized how great of a shooter it really was. Its nice to see videos with no fluff or clickbait tactics and silly voices but instead, straight to the point guides with detailed information that help us OG gamers keep up with the younger generation. Yes, they may have the youth on their side, but I have years of HLDM /CS/Halo/Destiny strategy experience to hold my own lol Thanks for making these videos. Im curious about your thoughts on having good skill vs having best tech ( top tier mouse/ keyboard/video card/monitors) etc. Im fortunate to have the ability to provide my kids with higher end gaming peripherals, but I know thats the the case for everyone. As a parent who maybe couldnt afford the best but had kids who NEEDED them because, as my daughter would say... they just got cracked by this no-grass touching plebs, after they hot dropped and now they're thirsting( i dont know what any of that means, just stuff ive heard her say lol) but if I JUST had this $1200 monitor I could play better.

Does anyone else have the bug where you go back into jogging after sliding (while sprinting) in this new update? I have to manually hit sprint again. Anyone know a fix.

Yes, they bugged it... or they mean to. But yeah now you have to spam 2 buttons instead of just slide (sprint, slide, sprint, slide, etc)

I bet you can't tell if I'm a good player or not just by watching me loot, because I open all the chests and ammo boxes to get xp for the battlepass, but I'm strategic when I do it. and is strategic in my gameplay. I've played with many random players in squats where they jump around and dance and slide like kangaroos on speed like you show in this video and yet they end up being eliminated quickly and we lose to another team just because they playing with their head under their arm, or I end up being the only survivor and being #2 because I can't just handle 1v4 but also won some victory royale in a 1v4 by playing strategically and not as a headless rambo who attacks the first opponent he meets on his way. But unfortunately I experience many "there is the world's best fortnite player" in random teams.
