It can seem like knee pain comes from old age and arthritis. Active adults often fall victim to this mental trap and think there's nothing you can do to prevent knee pain. The truth is you can prevent and fix knee pain if you train your knees properly. This will require you to vary your training and activities so you give your lower body a wide range of challenges. You need to train your hips, knees, ankles, and feet to have full range of motion and strength through a full range of motion (i.e. strength at every length)!

Skateboarding... I find that by doing movement prep everyday, I can safely skate everyday without problems at 45 years of age.

Hello hello friend!! I’ve been teaching Pilates for over 15 years on machine reformer. I have to agree with everything you say. It is what I’ve been trying to get across to my clients. Yes the muscles are getting flabby yes you are getting older but pumping those muscles is not the solution. I try to use a full stretching method and work to build muscles as you described. This video is amazingly good advice. I was diagnosed over 15 years ago with bone on bone arthritis in my knees and had the most awful knee pain and stiffness, etc... The only options I was given was Glucosamine and chondroitin and/or surgery. I decided to take control then and there. Long story short, I drastically changed my diet, and built strength and flexibility in my legs. Today, at 67, not only am I an avid dancer, but I also do Parkour almost daily. So, two activities which will help you: dance (practice multiple styles of dance) and Parkour. Parkour includes quadrupedal movement, which is one of the best full body workouts you will find for knees, arms, joints, back, shoulders, etc... But, whatever you choose to do, do something! And follow this advice. It is golden.

What did you do? I am 54 with knees that are not quite painful but often very very stiff in fact I wake up extremely stiff all over and it makes me want to avoid doing things I need to be doing. I did start lifting heavy weights a couple years ago and that helped and I feel better right after and I'm stronger but I still end up very stiff the other days. I have a desk job

@@doumkatekz My knees get stiff after sitting for a long period of time also. Don't know what to do about that. However, in general, I'm pretty flexible and rarely experience knee pain anymore. Things I did: I reduced my sugar intake, increased fruit and vegetables, worked on strengthening the leg muscles while also working on increasing flexibility (quads, calves, IT bands, etc...), heel pads in shoes, practiced squatting more (also helps strengthen legs). I think the advice in this video is very, very good. Get and stay active. Get your knees used to bending -- just don't overuse them. For example, I do a lot of jumping in Parkour, but I've trained myself to always land on my toes first, always bend my knees and always absorb as much of the impact as I can in my legs. So, train your body to do the things you need to do, not avoid them. It will be uncomfortable at first, but over time, your body will adapt. Go at your own pace, don't overdo it. You'll be amazed at what you are capable of down the line.

After watching a few videos on this channel, I just want to say that there's something so magical about the way you frame exercising. This mindset you cultivate of movement as an every day, achievable activity that only causes slight discomfort has made the whole idea of exercising every day feel really, really manageable. For such a long time, I have struggled with regularly exercising, going through unhealthy cycles of overdoing it and then hurting myself and swearing off exercising until a few months later, when I way overdo it again. Lately, I've been trying to break this cycle and focusing on finding joyful movement each day, whether that's going for a jog listening to my favorite podcast or playing with my friend's dog. Your videos are now playing a part in helping me break that cycle, and retain my flexibility as I age!

I did the Asian squat twice on Sunday when I was gardening...congratulations to moi!. Still found it a bit difficult to get back up and heard the cracking knee sounds. Will continue to build the muscles.

@@Uprighthealth I will you I'm the worth person on mobility, simply put I'm not sporty but I know I must do as much ,although there are some health reasons ,but it is good to be painless and doing useful challenges, there you come .From my first childbirth I got PAT ,finding your videos was a total game changer ,my child is 25 now, so you know why my mobility is so weak plus I have B12 issues even it gives me neuropathy Ok ,,now I had doing the dead bug ,bridge, using my butt muscle ,my balance and posture is better for less than a weak ,with the stretching, now i can do many more MOVEMENTS, which i thought impossible, i can almost that asian squat ,i start doing at least 2mns elbow planks, etc...You make easy,and you have revive my body ,truly .In 2017 i had a foot drop then start walking with a cane.Now with CORRECTing slowly and adjusting my pelvic and hip no more knee pain better balance, less use of cane.Thank you Sir .I'm will keep going slowly but surely.FIND BACK MY FLEXIBILITY, I USED TO DO PILATES 15YEARS AGO .BUT THAT MELTDOWN ON 2017and Covid just got me to the corner ,more in my bed.Change is HERE.

Great video Matt. A few years ago I had surgery ( clean up) of my torn meniscus … Since I started watching your channel, I am NEVER going back! ATM are words to live by. Now I have to keep the rest of my body from falling apart:-)

This is super vital to understand! I once stayed on the sixth floor of a hotel and I thought I was doing myself a great favor by avoiding the elevator until my shredded quads started pulling my knee joints out of alignment. Same with shoulders.. I had a partial rotator tear from uneven training and that taught me so much

Hey Matt can you do a video on walking (not brisk walking)? All the possible compensations that can happen and some possible remedies to ease into a better gait? And perhaps if certain shoe types are better. Sounds basic but I suppose there are points that some of us may overlook or not be aware of. Thank you!

Excellent presentation and I totally agree with everything you said. I would also mention the connection between joint pain and systemic inflammation from eating inflammatory foods, stress, lack of sleep, medications, environmental toxins, lack of exercise….etc.

Dear Matt, I quit tai chi because my knees were starting to hurt. My doctor took an xray and had me move about while he peered at my knees. No arthritis. The problem was that my muscles were so tense and stiff they were actually pulling/twisting my knees out of joint. After a mere week of doing a heel to bum stretch regularly my knees stopped hurting. Since then I have learned much else (a great deal from you) and have had to deal with all kinds of issues. But I pay attention to my muscles.

How true, moving in a bent knee position, as in tai chi, and falling to stretch to counter the shortened thigh muscle can give you knee problems, foam roller on the thighs helps.

You are right about muscle contraction and inadvertently only training the shortened muscle on contraction. This is why you should also train the 'negative' movement - full contraction to full extension, slowly, under the same load for full muscle development. Thanks, I enjoyed your video.

I used to have some knee pain and a doc told me it was about muscles being too weak. I've restarted my fencing classes and that helped big big time. Fencing focuses so much on legs, you do so many kind of exercises for your legs!

Dang, so i imagine the same goes for hip stiffness, upper thigh pain. Strength exercises along with flexibility then? Doing pool exercises and some swimming ATM, seems to be helping. Need to be more intentional with my other exercises. Thanks Matt!

As always, great advice. Let's not forget about attitude; and, by thinking about knee pain, you will have your mind thinking there's nothing that can be done except for RIIPS. I'm 67, and friends in their 30's and 40's have a hard time keeping up. Keep up the the good work, there are people listening where these videos will help.

My mom is 84 and she only does the same things, often in the wrong ways. Over time her muscle atrophied and currently has very limited range of motion. She still nags me about being active but I tell her she’s the best example of what not to do. I switch things up every 5 years, not stick to one activity exclusively. I discovered swimming last July and am loving it. As great as swimming is, it isn’t a cure all. I am doing weight train to help with bone density.

I mix up it up over time. I jog, run, and sprint; sometimes doing it backward and sidewards. I also do full squats, split squats, Cossack squats, and a couple other kinds of squats that get my legs in different positions and angles, including getting up and down from the ground with using my hands. I also do seiza, horse stance, joint rotations, side-foot walking, toe raises, step downs, tibia raises, hacky sack, and a few passive stretches. I just think of all the ways my joints and muscles can move. I don't do all of this on any given day or even necessarily any given week, but I do most of it on a regular basis throughout a month.

You refer (many times) to muscles and their (lack of) length. I know you have a history of studying Ida Rolf and her therapy called Rolfing. In her book on Rolfing, she has this most important statement "The length of ANY muscle in your body indicates its POTENTIAL STRENGTH and the distance thru which it can move the related body parts." Rolf also points out that as we age, we naturally shorten VERTICALLY and lengthen HORIZONTALLY! Basically, as we move thru life, we are losing CRITICAL LENGTH across the many joints in our bodies...which will sadly manifest in many nagging pains across those joints!

Things deteriorate naturally in time in just about everything. that's where the RIGHT SET of exercises come in. it's the ONLY way to counter those natural deterioration to a certain extent, vertical shortening & horizontal lengthening of muscles included.

Wow!! What an excellent explanation . I was wondering why I got knee pain yet I do strength training 4 days per week different days. But I used to stretch a lot too after each workout so I was gobsmacked when I got knee pain. This video kinda of explains it. Thank you

I am seing the same on myself. Years of sports and quite frankly my knees were bulletproof. Covid came, lots of lock down in my country, guess what knee pain pops up. I am finding as you say, full range of movements in my exercises reduces my knee pain. The days I am office bound, I feel the knee pain just sitting at my desk. Once I do some exercice, cycling, running, stretching… The pain goes. Thank you for this video .

I've never heard someone state it quite like this, thanks! I've struggled with knee problems for years. Specifically while hiking on uneven terrain and downhill my meniscus area gets sore, swells, and then I lose range of motion and the ability to maintain strength while bent. I've spent thousands on physio trying to fix it and nothing has really helped. Definitely going to think about the ideas in this video, though, in my case I am in the climbing gym at 3-4 times per week which I'd argue is one of the only sports that one could say actually trains the full range of motion in a dynamic and non-repetitive way. I've never considered trying to apply strength while stretching though, that is an interesting idea which I will give a try. My physio has never suggested it but it makes sense.

I had bad knee whenever when I went for a long hilly hike. Since getting into hilly cycling, my quads have gotten massive and support my knees now

In case of athletes, depending on the sport, arthritis might be the most likely cause - certain contact disciplines, particularly submission-focused grappling ones, are really hard on structures within the knee. Afaik a lot of professional competitors in BJJ for example have to get resurfacing surgery Still - prevention is king so muscles first

my anatomy teacher always said, that every joint will degenerate, the question is if it is before you die or after. I love that. If you care for your joints, they will last, I am sure of that.

I get joint pain with the on set of colds/covid. These pains can last for weeks after it has cleared up, I have small children and can average around 10 plus infliction over the cold/flu season. This also knock of regular exercise for months on end, with joint pain moving through the body over them weeks. Your join pain my just be the cold, great video.

Great video! I had had a knee injury a few people recommended an orthopedic specialist, I remember during the appointment, he told me, ' it smells like a meniscus.' After my scan and second evaluation, he was surprised, then injected my pes bursa and told me rest. Nothing else...that 6 years ago; thank you for your videos.

Thank You. Good logical sense. Once very active, now at 55, I know have Piriformis syndrome (feels like Sciatica), from injuring my erectors, which is causing issues with glutes and IT Band. Because I almost fell out of an Apache Helicopter and Hyper extended my erectors to prevent the fall..... You are correct, I need to change my workouts. Again, Thank You.

Unfortunately, in my case it is osteoarthritis. Having been a ballet dancer, aerobics instructor, and runner, it’s hard to accept that I have trouble doing squats now because of the arthritis pain. But, I do what I can, which is HIIT classes three times a week, and I’m nearly 70. So not bad I guess.

I had bad knees since I was a kid , I am talking 7 years old or younger . I would step on the school bus , and I would fall flat on my face , kids would laugh at me , tease me . Its if my knees wasn't even there . they would just give out . at 7 years old or so . growing up , yes I played sports , baseball was my fav , but I was never a good runner , I played short stop , because I didn't have to run very far , I had a great side arm throw , but again I couldn't run . If I did run , I would be in pain . being in foster care since I was 7 years old , no one ever told me why , I had bad knees , or even cared . the weird part about it , ridding a bike never bothered me , but running did . fast forward to today , when to the knee Dr , again , just to have him tell me that I need the knee shots again , every 6 to 9 months , I get the 3 shots .I call it . no offense to you , your a nice guy , and you seem to know your stuff , but how is it my fault , that I have bad knees , since I had bad knees since I was a little kid ? I also had 2 neck fusions c3 to t1 .do to a fall on ice backwards , but that's a different story . I am a retired 56 years old 215 pounds 5'5 white male . why I went back to the knee Dr , is because about 3 months ago , walking around Walmart with my wife , like we always do , I got shooting sharp pain in my knees , I mean sharp . I always have some kind knee pain in both knees , but not like that , I could barely walk . the pain went away around a week later , that's why I saw my knee Dr . any clue what I can do for my knees besides getting the 3 knee shots in both knees again ??? I been getting these shots for at least 5 or 6 years now .and yes I know that I need to loose weight , but how can I loose weight when my knees constantly hurt ????

Joint pain is a sign of systemic inflammation, proper exercise is important but won't fix a bad diet.

Amazing video, thanks for sharing these insights! The video caught my interest because I developed creaky tight knees after starting to do regularly train at my local bouldering gym last autumn, a sport that I would've previously considered to be great for training my knees to get stronger at full range of motion. I'll be trying to think differently about knee health from here on out!

Hello Sir iam suffering from insufficiency fracture in both knees I also have hip pain infact MRI showed bilateral Avascular Necrosis of hip iam not able to walk nor climb stairs nor bend down pls suggest me some exercise to increase my range of motion thank you Sir

I'm going to be 76 in less than 2 months. I don't play any sports because I have no coordination whatsoever (and never have). I'm not afraid of hard, physical work which is probably one of the things that's kept a lot of my muscles in fairly good shape. My knees are one of the few things that don't bother me. My back, on the other hand is a hot mess. Scoliosis, DJD, etc. I've been doing old physical therapy exercises for weeks that involve a lot of ROM and they've been helping.

"coordination" improves greatly with an increase in physical strength. Having a high strength to weight ratio means you can control that weight much easier. Add in flexibility and range of motion. Your pessimistic mindset which gets to be "CORRECT" a majority of the time is your greatest limiter. Pessimism is a form of an affirmation, where you intentionally say you can't or limit yourself so that you can be "right" a majority of the time. SO you tell yourself you "can't", you and you literally can't because that's your self imposed limit. Growth requires failure and correction. So the question is how do you get from point "A" to point "B", what is all required and what are the steps?

Weird observation about the primal squat. If I do the primal squat and hold it, then stand up quickly I don't get faint. But if I sit and do the same thing I DO get faint. Bodies are weird.

Hi! I just found your channel and watched some of your videos about Asian Squat and Knee pain. I am 55yo and want to start jump rope. I have a little pain when going upstairs and also sound when I do Asian Squat but I am working to strengthen my leg muscles by following your instructions. Is jump rope safe for knees? Thank you for this video. I was trying to do the knee stretches, but I cannot straighten my knee out as much.( because it's painful) If I can only lift it up as high as I can, will that change in time? I've been having a knee pain for over a year now. Some days it's good and some days I have to take it easy.

At 66 my knees are in perfect condition. At least 70% of the guys at the gym have knee problems, and they tell me not to do full squats but half/quarter squats (LoL) I do full squats for 46 years now. In my hey days, I could squat 300 kg. Once a year I have to squat 100 kg ATG 20 times. 2 things; I only used a small dose of steroids for three years during my competition years. Never touched them again. 2) I keep on squatting the "wrong" way.😀.

I have been suffering knee pain for 4 years due to sport injury of patellar dislocation. The injury happen 4 years ago when I am training for Taekwondo. I still do Taekwondo now. This video make me know the reason of my injury and knee pain. I think I overtrain the same muscles by doing too many kicking. I've been active in Taekwondo since primary school, now I am in college. Maybe I need to strengthen my VMO, do you think so? What do you suggest sir?

Hi Matt! Great content, Great personality and I enjoy your sense of humor. Do I need a lot of your kid's toys to help with many of your exercises? I have tried a lot of your exercises, continued with some and especially the Asian Squat. You talk a lot about over using biceps without equal use of opposite muscles. Do you have a video that addresses specific arm exercises that I can use? If not, can you create a video. I made a Paypal donation this evening(eventors). Keep up the great work. I am 74 and trying to keep my body in good shape. My Jack Russell has me walking him 4miles a day, but I need a lot of upper body work.

I had both meniscus repaired, lateral and medial and now I am having trouble getting full knee deflection back. It's becoming a problem with my other knee now because I don't deflect my knees all the way. it's a struggle, any advice?

Yeah, you get the surgery and you end up doing the physical therapy anyways. Why not start with the physical therapy? Insurance doesn't pay very well for PT, however. They can't argue about it post-op.

Just to make it clear for the bicep curl example, if i open my elbows all the way before lifting the weight again, will that protect my wrists and keep my range of motion? Or do i need to do something else?
