Maybe it's something that I picked up on initially (but it gets lost at times while watching the movie,) I feel as though Padme uses the Force unknowingly to understand Anakin and is able to synchronize with him. My experience with females is that they love to synchronize. This is a cringe comment for sure 😂

Credit due, Boba is a dark horse character whose popularity was out of proportion, and then he got bolstered by comics and novels afterwards. Jango got good representation in this movie is _because_ Boba was a dark horse favourite, and by extension, Boba's unusual popularity was what gave us the Clones we know and love.

I’ve always maintained that the bones of the prequels’ story are mostly good, though the execution as far as the dialogue, direction and acting is pretty lacking, and the effects have not aged well. They are definitely quotable at least, and far more memorable than Disney’s attempt at a Star Wars trilogy. I’ll give them that.
@samlerf
@samlerf 5 ай бұрын
"But in my films, the dialogue is not where the movie is. My films are basically in the graphics. The emotional impact comes from the music - and from juxtaposing one image with the next." "The last thing that will be dealt with is the dialogue. You know, I'm not known for my dialogue. I think of it as a sound effect, a rhythm, a vocal chorus in the overall soundtrack. Mostly, everything is visual." KZbin channel "Rick Worley" has more on that. There's a reason why George Lucas even edited different takes together. And honestly: Don't forget the few Star Wars novels/audiobooks written with Lucas ("Cloak of Deception", "Darth Plagueis", the 6 movie novelizations , "Shatterpoint" and "Labyrinth of Evil").

As a Dooku/Separatist Supporter, I appreciate that you see him as he is, not just a pure evil. And to defend the CGI, Lucas was basically inventing CGI. Also for people who hate the CGI. Each of the background Jedi were filmed separately on a green screen, while the background was a model they built then put the characters in.

He works with Palpatine but he also quiet literally tells Obi-wan that the Sith is in control of republic and Obi-wan can join him. Together, maybe they can defeat him and go on their own road. But Obi-wan just dismisses it.

A lot of people complain about the Prequels overusing CGI and while the movies utilize it, George Lucas and the crew also utilized a lot of practical effects. A lot of locations and vehicles were miniatures. Naboo palaces? Practical miniatures. Kamino cloning facility? Practical miniature. Tatooine podrace arena? Practical miniature. Separatist lairs on Utapau, Mustafar, and Geonosis? All practical miniatures. Not to mention the interiors of these locations were giant sets built by the crew and not CGI on a green screen.

Thank you for bringing up how unironically realistic it is for Anakin to be "creepy and weird" around his crush. When I first met my wife she asked if I was gay because of how weird I was acting. Women need to realize when you first meet a guy, give them 5 minutes of accumulative weird-time, because maybe you're visually a goddess in their eyes. If you met your celeb crush you'd be awkward and weird too, it's just for us men we sometimes find the cashier at wal-mart to be celebrity levels of beautiful. Example: My wife was some poor sporty tomboy, and that made her more beautiful than Angelia Jolie.

As a child, this was my favorite Star Wars movie. To this day, I love the prequel era, the worldbuilding displayed in the prequels, the imaginative aliens, and the types of adventures our heroes went in on. As an adult, I acknowledge many Anakin and Padme scenes were more awkward and wooden than I noticed as a kid, but even then, I stand behind the fact that other scenes people rag upon are actually good. Anakin's conversation about sand, delving into the contrast between slave and queen, but leading into their unity, is unironically good and I will stand on this (sand)hill forever. Likewise, Anakin and Padme talking politics while teasing each other is good. And as someone who actually doesn't have most of the "uncanny valley" senses people do when looking at older/bad CGI, it's easily believable for me and an enormous realm of imagination for me. I notice more narrative flaws as an adult, but that's not limited to just AOTC - but meanwhile as an adult, I notice more of the subtleties and manipulations I didn't as a kid, so I get a new win. I've recently done a rewatch of the SW six-ology, which I haven't in a while... and yep. AOTC still fun.

I remember feeling moved by the goofy awkward romance of Anakin and Padme when I was a kid. I loved them as characters and the awkwardness felt like real people trying to connect. There's a truly impressive shot during the final battles of clones and droids shooting each other in a sandstorm (it made a brief appearance in this video). It's 100% CGI but the models of the clones, the physics of the storm, and the lighting, particularly that of the different-colored blaster-bolts whizzing through the sand, is so on point that you don't even question it.

Honestly, Anidala never creeped me out. Beyond the simple fact of being a teen or young adult and awkward is common, I have the childhood trauma like Anakin has so I can confirm it's hard to be flirtatious without messing up along the way. In my opinion, the movie is not bad, but perhaps Padmé should have been more of the "seducer" to "fix" the love story I guess. Btw, not seducer in the sense of attempting to force herself on Anakin but more of telling him that there is a life outside of the Jedi Order. Anakin attempts to resist his feelings like Leia in Empire Strikes Back but not to Padmé but more of the Jedi's indoctrination of him and they eventually just come together.

The scene of Anakin's mom death still gives me goosebumpes to this day. One of the best scenes in Star Wars ever. The fact his mom is so happy and fullfilled to see him, that the last thing she ever tells him is "I love you" (like Padmé and Obi-Wan did). The shot where she falls cold dead in his arms is renaissance painting-like and so thrilling. Then the insidious music coming in as Anakin is filled with pure hate. In this moment we also feel the hate, in Anakin's shoes, many of us would do what he did. The Dark Side feels exactly like this seducing power we may all feel, not the dumb "bad guy" behavior we can see in movies. And this act is another step towards the Dark Side, just like Anakin's shadow on the wall is Vador-like when Padmé hugs him before he goes to save his mom. Just Wonderful

@BobMcBobJr I agree. I rewatched The Phantom Menace for the first time in 10years. With the exception of the Maul/Qui Gon/Obi-Wan saber fight at the end, I considered TPM to be the weakest of the prequels. Well after having been dragged through the mud with the Sequels, TPM was way better than I remembered it being, and I've always liked AOTC, except for the lack of chemistry between Hayden and Natalie in the love scenes. Revenge of the Sith is easily as good as Return of the Jedi, in my opinion. But I challenge anyone to rewatch The Phantom Menace, especially if they haven't seen it for a long time, and compared to the sequels, it's no contest. 1 -6 are pure George Lucas, and the Sequels are just not anywhere near the quality of 1-6. Not even close.

The awkwardness in Anakin and Padme's romance was indeed intentional, per Lucas' word. The point is that Anakin is trying too hard and Padme is naively receptive. It's when they return to their usual selves(basically everything following the fireplace rejection, as well as their deleted scenes) that they begin to see more of one another for who they really are and gel much more naturally than they would have forced themselves to have otherwise just from the initial spark of attraction. Anakin's mistake was in using his assignment to protect Padme as a means to convey his love for her, hoping she'll fall in love with his pedestalizing her when in reality, as Padme confesses, she'd already started falling for him the moment she first laid eyes on him for the first time in ten years. It's why she leaned into their first kiss. All Anakin needed to do was reveal the man she fell in love with at first sight, rather than try and be someone she *could* fall in love with. Be the man the boy who saved her planet grew up into, which is what the latter half of their romance ends up portraying. He was self sabotaging for the first half of the movie in attempts at stunting on Obi-Wan's authority and being "man enough" for Padme. It's a subversion of the bodyguard trope where the protected comes to fall in love with their protector, only Anakin is trying to make that happen deliberately, making everything awkward as a result.
@AnimaVox_
@AnimaVox_ 4 ай бұрын
I noticed this too. Anakin seems to be trying too hard to take charge and impress her at the beginning-perhaps born out of his presumed romantic inexperience or insecurity at still being treated like a kid and being kept out of the loop-and Padmé is having none of that, which is why she asserts herself with him. It isn't until they both start opening up and become more honest with themselves that they truly click. This is why my favorite scenes with them are the ones where they're just talking about life and politics because they're essentially getting to know each other without pretenses and duty getting in the way (again, this is why I think their deleted Naboo scenes should've been kept). I think a lot of people missed this, to say the least, although tbf, it may not be immediately evident to everyone. Edited for error.
@lordofd7111
@lordofd7111 4 ай бұрын
@@AnimaVox_ Not on first glance, no. Because everyone was probably expecting it to go as smoothly as Han and Leia with their more natural chemistry(aided by the actors' affair no doubt). But Anakin's first scenes in AotC should be more than enough to tell anyone how his pursuit of romance was going to go. I get that it's hard to have to sit through a damn near whole movie of it, but that's kind of the point - their romance was written to be doomed from the start and a very bad idea that they end up taking too far simply because the feelings were there and better consummated in the face of death than wasted.

There are a few things I would like to point out in this film. For one, the little motifs John Williams adds in certain scenes that greatly amplify them. When Anakin talks about slaughtering the Tusken Raiders, you'll hear the dark side theme creep in. There are other moments like this if you listen closely. In the solo duel between Dooku and Anakin, I really love the part when the lights cut out and the duel is only illuminated by the lightsabers clashing. It's a great visual trick that elevates the scene. And while the purpose of the clones isn't fully revealed until Revenge of the Sith, the scene of Palpatine overlooking the Clone army as the Imperial March plays, and after seeing Yoda question whether they were even victorious, is a masterpiece of a scene. I would argue it's one of the best scenes in the franchise.

22:06 I’m always down for a good video defending the prequels, but I do think referencing the clone wars show a lot is a bad idea. You have to remember that the prequel trilogy was made before the show came to bridge the gap between episodes 2 and 3. Therefore, I think arguing the quality of the prequels is much weaker if it has to rely on the clone wars to save it. A good movie needs to stand on its own. The clone wars is awesome, but you can praise the prequels without them.

Showcasing a non force user (Jango Fett) besting a fucking Jedi Master was the one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen when I was a kid. That one encounter solidified this as a gem of a movie. It showed Jedi are not the gods they were hyped up to be. And they did it in the most badass way possible. The introduction of the Mandolarians and their grounded tactics as being formidable against space wizards… amazing.

For me, this was the best StarWars movie. From good action scenes, a lot of interesting aliens, good villain introduction like Count Dooku and the romantic tension between Padme and Anakin was really good. I liked the focus put on the duty, it takes a great fight to be selfless and not listening to your moods. Padme confesses her passsionately love for Anakin just when she thought their death was irevocable.

It’s about time this movie got a defence, especially AOTC. People hated the romance in this movie because the dialogue was awkward and cringey. Anakin is a 19 year old boy, who has been trained exclusively in how not to engage in flirtation and romantic conversation, trained to detach himself, is extremely overpowered, and deeply traumatised by life as a slave on Tatooine, losing his mother, and then holding her whilst she dies, and THEN having to carry the horrible secret of revenge-killing an entire tribe of sentient beings, including children. The only thing that would be unrealistic, would be Anakin being a smooth talking pickup artist. I see his awkward speech as, frankly, very believable. Lots of real flirting is adorably cringey. Not everyone is a poet or a pickup artist. Lastly, when he says he doesn’t like sand - it is coarse and rough and it does get everywhere - I think he is also talking not just about the actual sand of Tatooine, but how he never feels free of the memory of it even now - it gets everywhere in the mind. We know, when he talks about that to Padme, he has been dreaming of his mother suffering on Tatooine. He can’t even escape the “sand” of Tatooine in his dreams.

I had a big silly grin during your whole video while you were talking about all of the awesome stuff AOTC did right! This is still my personal favorite prequel film to this day (yeah I know), it literally defined an entire era of stuff people love... like the Clone Wars aesthetic, cyberpunk Coruscant, Anakin and Obi-wan's banter, Kamino, LAAT gunships, Kit Fisto, Aayla Secura, Yoda being a badass... etc, etc. Its easy to take a lot of these things for granted now, but this was where it all started. Personally I always felt like picking your favorite Lucas Star Wars movie is like picking your favorite ice cream flavor, there's no wrong answer. They're all good but most of us have a preference for which one really "speaks" to you. This was such a great essay! To the point and entertaining throughout. Thank you for having an open mind about an often maligned chapter of the saga. You talked about the things you didn't care for just as much as its merits, but never felt unfair or overly biased. Something i realized with padme's line about how she's a senator and anakin is a jedi makes sense. Prequel haters say its because senators cant be in a relationship but really, the question padme is asking is: "Are you okay with hiding our love for the rest of your life from our family and friends??"Padme holds public office while Anakin is a monk who had to travel and keep the peace. What if they get caught?? It could ruin their lives and reputations for ever with so many implications if the galaxy finds out about their relationship.

I feel like most people my age have a similar view of nostalgia for Attack of the Clones. It became one of the less rewatched SW movies later on, but I still appreciate the lore. It’s cliche, but I think it could have been elevated to a masterpiece if edited differently. The weakest CGI shots were last minute changes. The droid factory scene wasn’t in the original cut. Anakin and Padme simply went from point A to point B and the droids stayed out of the main conflict. In its place were more scenes of character development for Anakin and Padme. The soundtrack also took a backseat to the sound design when you realize how much of Williams’ score was cut and how there’s many big scenes without music. Still fun and rewatchable, I’m only this harsh because I love the saga as a whole

I actually don't mind the CGI clones too much because there is no way they can get enough extras to play that many clones. I mean even Waterloo can't match that scale. But it would be nice to have some of the close up scenes to be actual people in costume. I actually think the Dooku vs Anakin scene is a strong lightsaber duel because it highlights the difference between a talented, but inexperienced lightsaber duelist (Anakin) and an equally gifted (in terms of lightsaber combat) and experienced duelist. That way it makes the duel in ROTS much more interesting because it shows Anakin's growth. World building is excellent in the prequels especially compared to the unimaginative Tatooine clones of the sequels (so much wasted opportunities). Overall I think Lucas has a good vision and story, but maybe have someone else look over the details like dialogue and lines to maybe make some things flow better and sound less awkward. I do like how you pointed out Anakin being an awkward teenager though. That is an interesting point

What did Attack of the Clones give us 1. A mystery about who tried to assassinate Padme and why was Kamino erased from the archives 2. Count Dooku told the truth to Obi Wan about Sidious being behind everything 3. Jango Fett besting Obi Wan in a fight 4. The Asteroid Field Chase 5. A bunch of Jedi kicking ass 6. Yoda kicking ass 7. Palpatine solidifying power. 8. The Start of the Clone Wars 9. The Start of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side over the death of his mother 10. Palpatine maniuplating the Jedi to be his pawns. But sure because Anakin says, "I don't like sand." (even though in context it was Padme talking about growing up and going to the beach in the lap of luxury and Anakin remembers his miserable slave life on Tatooine) and cringe love dialogue, that automatically negates any positives

I actually think that Palpatine intended the assassination attempts to fail so that the jedi themselves could find the Clone army! For example, after Viceroy Gunray told Dooku that he wants Padmé dead ,Palpatine and Dooku hire Jango Feet and tell him to bomb the main Naboo ship knowing well that Padmé wasn’t in it and after that Palpatine could have an excuse to hire some jedi to look after her. Palpatine then tells Jango Feet to assassinate Padmé with the space worms and the plan fails because the jedi sent by Palpatine intercept both the worms and the Changeling wich is killed with a precision weapon by Jango Feet that can be tracked to the clone factory. Honestly I do not get why there is so much confusion with this scene, the space worms are actually a good killing method that is more silent than a blaster and explosion and more difficult to sense, the droid sent to deliver and retrieve the space worms is not capable of autonomous thinking or self destruct following Palpatine’s desire for the jedi to track Jango Fett, Jango Fett’s Changeling being a Changeling adds more tensions to her scenes and of course Jango Feet cannot go back to Padmé’s home considering that it is in a high allert after the second failed assassination attempt and Padmé may not even be there and also it makes sense for Jango Feet to utilize precise modified weapons rather than normal ones.

Palpatine is a good planner, but there's no way he could predict Jango using an untraceable weapon, and Obiwan knowing just the right obscure person to trace it back to a planet which has been deleted from all star maps. I don't buy it. If that were to be taken as the truth, then Palpatine is simply a god and he should have taken over long before the events of the movies. No, it is much more likely that Palpatine had nothing to do with it. This was Nute Gunray's doing, through Dokuu, who had to secure the Trade Federation loyalty for the CIS, and it is likely neither Dokuu nor Palpatine had planned for the war to start when it did

One interesting thing about AOTC that I only just thought of and have not heard anyone talk about are the contrasts between the separatists and republic. They are 2 sides of the same coin. There are obvious ones of course like Jedi/Sith, mass produced secret armies, and they both being led by the same person but I just realized a few others. Kamino and Geonosis are both aesthetically similar. They are creepy worlds that are mostly barren aside from giant spires that are home to cultures that value conformity and production. One is wet the other is dry. Padmé and Dooku are both political idealists with similar goals. Padmé believes the crisis can be averted through diplomacy while Dooku believes that violence is the only solution. Jango Fett was hired by both factions. To create for the republic and destroy for the separatists. Both the clones and the droids are made in the image of their creators. Jango Fett and the Geonosians. Both sides are corrupt with businesses and politics mixing way too much. In the republic politics is the bigger influence while the separatists have business being the dominant role. Both are led by fallen Jedi. The Jedi council has lost sight of their purpose and Dooku fell to the dark side because of this. There are lot more than this but I just want to name a few.

The scene where Anikan kills the Tuscan Raiders felt like a natural progression of the story to me, the Tuscan's kinda deserved it and had it coming. Think about it, they kidnapped at beat his mom, and yea so the kept her alive. But what do kidnappers usually do to their victims when they keep them alive? They r@pe them, beat them and the cycle continues until they are bored of her and kill her or she dies from eveything being done to her. So in my opinion, at least that group of Tuscan's 100% deserved it, and it keeps them from doing more of the same thing to other potential victims. Not to mention if they've done it once there's no telling how many times they've done it before, so there's probably a whole list of moral crimes they've committed, no matter what the "rules" of the jedi or the planet are, they had it coming and needed to be delt with for the safety of others as well.

I remember watching this on the midnight showing and a friend of mine as much involved with collecting Star Wars figures as myself and before the movie we talked a lot about it and had wondered if this was going to be as good as Empire in the scheme of what Empire was in the OT. On my way out, he searched me out and asked me if I thought it was as good as Empire. I told him I thought it was better than Empire. I could see that he was conflicted. The next time we met again was waiting for the midnight showing of Revenge of the Sith, he told me he didn't like AOTC as much as myself saying it was as good. He wanted to know why I said that. I said in two characters, Christopher Lee and Jango Fett. Then it made sense to him. GL being a huge Hammer fan he was now aficionados of both Cushing and Lee and the incredibly funny set piece where Lee comes to the Marquette of Yoda the 1:1 size of him with the vampire teeth on his persons and Lee reacting to what he saw it makes me laugh now remembering how perfect that was. Perfect showing that GL had his own fan boy elements and what Lee said in introducing his family to GL and pointing to him saying nobody in all of Hollywood has ever done what he was able to do. To create a movie that no studio could tell him to change this item or that, there was no intervention allowed and that isn't something that had ever been done before and for that minor part alone was not to be missed but to be appreciated. Thank the Maker.

People that complain about the overuse of CGI in the prequels are actually complaining about the quality of the CGI in the prequels, which is a moot point because technology at the time only allowed for that quality of CGI to be possible. The sequels used more special effects and CGI than the prequels, but they get a pass because the technology is better developed and thus doesn’t stand out as much. And the most ironic part is that people should be THANKING the prequels for using CGI in the ways they did and paving the way for more films to use the technology in similar ways and advance it to the level we see it in by the time of the sequels.

TBH I think it goes against Padme's character to accept that Anakin killed women and children. Yes, she knew what the tuskin raiders did, but I'd think she'd draw the line when it comes to slaughtering women and children. Now don't get me wrong, I do like how it establishes how far Anakin went for when he becomes Darth Vader, but I feel that scene should have been shared with Palpatine instead. Picture this: when Anakin comes home with his mother's body, Padme has an idea what Anakin may have done, but she doesn't question him because she knows he's in pain. For all she knows, he could have just killed the sand people warriors. Later on, we see Anakin with Chancellor Palpatine in his office on Coruscant after the events on Geonosis. Palpatine says he's noticed something has been troubling Anakin and Anakin confesses what he did. "I killed them. I killed them all. And not just the men, also the women and the children too. They're like animals! And I slaughtered them like animals! I hate them!" Palpatine rests a hand on Anakin's shoulder and gives a smile that appears reassuring, but in actually one of satisfaction. "To be angry is to be human, Anakin." Now wouldn't THAT be a more fitting scene?
