New Zealand should think about integrating their defence force with the Australian Defence Force. An example of this is the Dutch Army integrating into the German Army. Some Australian jet fighters could be stationed at New Zealand bases. NZ infantry could be trained to use Australian weapon systems such as the boxer IFV, Himars etc that are coming soon. Australia would benefit from getting a manpower boost and NZ would become better protected.

Mutual condemnation of Greg Chappell. NZ becomes a Continent. Australians finally get to do Hakkas. NZ becomes Australia's 3rd biggest state. The New Zealand Defense Force can stop pretending it's a thing. Australia gets Peter Jackson, Russel Crowe, and Flight of the Conchords. Australia's land area will increase by a little bit. Its the fact we have too many middle managers (i.e. we have 141 commanders with 9 ships to command (8 now that HMNZS manawanui's hit a reef ) and those managers make life a living hell for the people actually doing the work in order to keep their 6 figures and stable paper shuffling jobs. weather is navy chefs or nurses who suffer and leg it to Australia. i don't think its a case of one Or the other, but rather a multitude of problems with our entire culture. Interesting comments also about Australia defending its Sea Lines of Communication... Subtle dig at NZ needing to up its game, especially when looking to buy replacement General Purpose Frigates in the upcoming joint purchase agreement eg NZs intentions within the upcoming Defence Capability Plan. At the end of September, the New Zealand navy joined with the Australian and Japanese armed forces to sail through the Taiwan Strait. It was the first time in seven years that the New Zealand navy had patrolled that area, and its visit was of great political significance. Xiaoming Huang, a Victoria University professor of international relations, agreed that marine security was a major issue for New Zealand - and one where this country could show its commitment to the region. "This is a very volatile international environment," Huang said. For New Zealand, but also every trading nation, he said security of the sea would be of "extreme importance". "The loss of Manawanui has reduced the RNZN fleet to eight ships and added to fleet availability issues. The RNZN have laid up three ships, offshore patrol vessels HMNZS Otago (P148) and HMNZS Wellington (P55), and inshore patrol vessels HMNZS Hawea (P3571), due to a lack of personnel to crew the ships. Frigate HMNZS Te Mana (F111) is in the midst of an extended maintenance period which includes upgrades to its communication systems, leaving now only four ships on operational status - frigate HMNZS Te Kaha (F77), multi-role vessel HMNZS Canterbury (L421), fleet oiler HMNZS Aotearoa (A11) and inshore patrol vessel HMNZS Taupo (P3570)." (From USNI). Judith Collins is refreshingly honest about the current state of our Navy in particular (compared to 35-years ago), and the need to finance new frigates among other items in the upcoming Defence Capability Plan. Proof will be in the level of ACTUAL capital spend on Defence, whether it will satisfy the Aussis to lower the cost per General Purpose Frigate (3 or 4 required in NZ), and whether it will satisfy the likes of Donald trump (if he heaven forbids gets in) and his demand for countries to stop freeloading on the US for Defence coverage in the Indo-Pacific & elsewhere... ie. Will NZ raise its defence spending from a pathetic 1.1% of GDP to something like 1.6% of GDP in short order given the geopolitical backdrop in the Northwest Pacific?

We gave 3 million dollars to Ukraine and it lasted 5 minutes 3 million we could use to up our defense systems gummon

According to Luxon NZ is broke. The government is cutting expenditure to most government departments/services, even school lunches are affected. So there shouldn't be a chance in hell to beef up our military. NZ spends 1.3 % of GDP on the military and that was going to be affected by government austerity measures as will. So, where's the funding coming from?
@WhoamiNZАй бұрын
I think it comes down to a long-term monetary commitment. If we lock in 2% of GDP as a minimum that all governments are consistent with for decades. We could have the Defence force we need. And if the economy shrinks, the defence budget shrinks as well. Consistency is the key with anything in life.
@badjelly1027Ай бұрын
@@Kelvinpaul4 We can by start manufacturing our own weapon systems with private sector and government funding. Create an industry around defense with sales offsetting the cost, it's the way of the future. The resupply logistics don't make sense ,we need to have an industry base at home. Rather than buy obsolete second hand shit, let's make state of the art mass produced equipment here that suits our geographic location. Missiles, drones and the like.
@Kelvinpaul4Ай бұрын
@@badjelly1027I agree with manufacturing weapons and munitions for our use and for sale to other nations as many developed countries do. However NZ governments think manufacturing and selling military goods is contrary to NZ character and have even stopped Kiwi Saver investing in companies who manufacture weapons or components that could be used in the manufacturing of weapons and munitions. NZ companies are prohibited from being involved in the manufacturing and or selling military weapons and munitions on international markets. Which is stupid.
@badjelly1027Ай бұрын
@@Kelvinpaul4 That's correct, I guess we will have to import this equipment at exorbitant cost. I just hope we change our mindset as to what military hardware will actually be effective and what our defense strategy is . We do however have more pressing problems at home that need attention.

@@badjelly1027 I think for the navy innovating and researching remote controll patroll vessels and alike would be a great thing for nz todo as other countries would have a interest in it and we could get in early and become a innovator in it. But we should manufacture things that we can also sell to other countries to keep people employed here and as you said off set the costs I also believe more ships with the same capabilities as the Canterbury could be a great soft power. To keep the south island nations in our/ allies/usa/aus sphere of influence which would help prevent a Chinese millitary base. Just imagine if we had a few ships that could supply and help in relief/ construction efforts for a entire island I'd help our own country and our neighbors it wouldn't be able to destroy a destroyer but I'd make it harder for China to have a foot hold.
