Everybody looks at iroh's mourning scene as the tear jerker of the series but I can't watch zuko repenting to iroh in that tent without wanting to sob. Not just the pain from zuko but the immediate forgiveness from his uncle without any resentment to be found. Imagine how much good could be done just by everyone having such a loving person in their lives

In my opinion zuko and iroh in the tent is the saddest part of the series Iroh wakes up to see zuko behind him, silently sitting there. And he looks away Zuko being speechless and not knowing what to say but having so much sorrow in his voice Crying , thinking iroh is about to yell at him but receiving a hug, and being confused Everything about this scene,f rom the start to the end of the scene, the emotion and the music getting louder and sadder as iroh gives zuko the hug It is so sad and done so well

Maybe this is just my opinion.... but I feel as an adult that rewatching it fully since its heyday, I deeply appreciate its kid friendly gaze in general. I think it unintentionally highlights that a story does not need to cast a sexual net on its cast of characters to create interesting and deep realistic attractive characters. It impressed me a lot!

It really bugs me how so many "adult" shows are only adult because they stuff it full of sex/sex jokes and curse words. I really appreciate adult shows that are adult because they deal with real life issues, and I appreciate even more so children's shows that deal with these types of issues. I think every child moving into their teenage years should be shown this show. I was lucky to watch this show at that stage in my life and I'm a more understanding person because of the ideals that this show taught me. And even as an adult now, I still laugh at the stupid kid jokes but I also cry at the scenes when these characters that Ive grown to love are shown going through pain. I feel like this show understands me more than just about any fiction I've gone through before, and I've heard similar sentiments from a lot of people who watched this show as a young teenager
@violeta373

this is a year late but the fact a “kids” show takes on such “adult” topics with understanding and respect is super special. they know children aren’t dumb, and children are able to understand more than just fart and poop jokes, which can still be enjoyable when done correctly. i think that’s why the show has been able to grow up with an entire generation, including me. as a kid, i got to enjoy the powers and the characters, as a young adult, i get to all of that still with a deeper understanding of the storytelling and world building. they took their audience seriously, and that’s what allows it to continue to thrive many years later.

this show literally changed my life. as a kid i saw episodes here and there but never really understood the story. when it was put on netflix i decided i’d watch it during quarantine since i was bored. i was going through a dark time in my life and really struggling with my mental health. this show taught me how to heal and forgive the world as well as myself. the show is much more than a kids show and can. genuinely teach important life lessons.

Best show of all time 💯💯. Never seen writing come so full circle before. Every detail mattered and wasn’t forgotten. We came for Aang and stayed for Zuko. Best redemption arc of all time. The real life inspiration from the martial arts to eastern cultures. World building was unbelievable. With all the philosophy and morals discussed it definitely is not a kids show. Each character had deep character arcs and all served a purpose. Don’t know if this show will ever be able to be beaten as the best ever.

But just because it deals with heavy themes doesnt mean its not a kids show. Children are just as capable of feeling deep grief and emotion as any adult but just have more difficulty naming their pain. If anything this is what all kids shows should be; not an escape from reality but a softer way of showing it.

But then I rewatched it as an adult and realized where I got alot of my own personal values from. I realized that this show kind of taught me how to be a good person. It taught amazing morals and values that I always hoped to be able to teach my own children. Avatar is a pick me up comfort series, atleast for me. Whenever I feel like not watching anything or need a filler moment in my life to give me meaning ang restart my mood, its definitely a go to. This is why I know for sure it'll still be relevant and iconic even after 20 or 50 years have passed. ps. the detail it had to differentiate the northern and southern water tribe it did? GOD STANDARD. And even though it derived inspiration from real life places and cultures and events, it still feels a whole different world.

Here are my brief thoughts on all of the major characters of ATLA Aang: I see myself in him, as I often want to avoid my problems as well, but watching him overcome those issues inspires me to achieve my dreams. Katara: How can you not love Katara? She's the most powerful water bender, can be sweet and caring one minute, but then be serious in the next. Sokka: Comic relief characters don't often work for me, but Sokka did. Much like Aang, it is so inspiring to watch him overcome his problems and achieve his dream of being a leader. Toff: The most moody and sassy of the group, but a fun edition to team Avatar. Plus she's the one who invented Metal bending. Momo and Appa: Not much to say here, but I've always loved these two. Suki: Haven't seen the show in a while, but I definitely consider her as a member of Team Avatar. Also she and Sokka are perfect together. Zuko: No explanation needed. Iroh: My favorite character for all the reasons you stated, so nothing else needs to be said. Ozai: He's the character who feels the most like a plot device, so he's my least favorite story wise. Azula: I hate her. Not because she's a bad villain, but because she's too good. She does her villainous job so well that I actively hate her and want to watch her suffer. Mai: A little bland, but I like the mystery to her. She and Zuko are also cute together. Ty Lee: Best girl.

The fact that the lion turtle gave Aang the power to energy bend made perfect sense. Since Aang never went against his own beliefs of killing someone even tho his past lives told him too, he was worthy to possess such power. His spirit was truly the light in the darkness, like the lion turtle said. His spirit was unbendable. Makes perfect sense. A perfect finale, something great shows like Game of Thrones failed at. A rated R prequel would be great. Showing the Fire nation grow into an empire.

It would get lost in its own gratuity guaranteed. I think the restriction on violence and how dark they could go is actually part of what forced them to create such powerful narrative to have the impact they wanted

The Kyoshi novels aren’t what I would call rated R, but definitely more hardcore than ATLA. Without getting into spoilers, it seems that the rise of the Fire Nation can kind of be traced back to the Fire Nation Avatar before Roku (Szeto). He didn’t do it on purpose though!

When I first watched this as a kid, I just thought it was some random cartoon that happened to be on Nickolodeon. Saw it once through since it was on cable back then. Years later and this show has grown into such a big deal and I’m all for it. I watch the show now as an adult and I understand the deeper meaning of avatar. Great to have this community! 😄

i always wondered why aang's tattoos glowed, speculating that it could be some sort of special ink that the airbenders could have used for one reason or another such as helping with their airbending. or that it was just a cool visual effect and the arrows represented the flow of air. after all that speculating i did a google search and found out its because the tattoos line up with qi lines in the body lol the airbenders really are spiritual people, i can admire marking yourself with that kind of thing, i plan to mark myself with the hand of miriam after all

I don’t think the tale of Iroh was written because of Mako’s death given that he voices Iroh in all but one of the scenes of the vignette (the one with the boys playing ball). I think they just thought it was the best place to honor the man. It may also be that what he recorded for “the tale of Iroh” was the last he actually recorded. To my memory only there and a line in “lake laogai” is voiced by Greg Baldwin in season 2, though uncredited.

You are wrong about the swampbenders. They are actually based on the Vietnamese disapora in Louisiana. That's why they have Vietnamese names and cajun accents. :) Outside of Vietnam, Louisana has one of the largest Vietnamese populations: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_in_New_Orleans

yes, the harry potter books get darker as the series progressed but they were still very campy and charming. I hated the dark blue filters that the movies used which just made it hard to see. The jump cuts and the edit were absolutely terrible. I'm glad that atla didnt stop adding the funny moments. it is what made the great in my opinion.

So my favorite movie of all time is Lord of the Rings, and from now on, I will try my best to determine if a show that I saw is LOTR quality. Avatar: The Last Airbender will be the first show to fit that category, because it is 3 seasons long (Lord of the Rings is a trilogy), has epic moments, has sad moments, has happy moments, has left a long lasting impression on not only my life, but for most everyone around the world, and has one helluva finale!!!!! So, Avatar: The Last Airbender, congratulations!! You are the first animated show to get a LOTR rating, which is the highest and most undisputed rating that I can ever give a show!!!

@Storytellers Totally Awesome Video, absolutely loved it. One other major theme ATLA holds is (The Absence of Fathers - Why Fathers are Necessary) a lot of people don't put this in when making a video about ATLA. Though it's not just the (Absence of Fathers) but any male role model figure, such as: Big Brothers, Uncles, Male Cousins, Male Best Friends etc The young boy called 'Lee' he meets in the Earth Kingdom Village in the episode (Zuko Alone) his Big Brother had gone away to war. Even though (The Father) is still around, the effect that still resides is even more adamant and seen. Another is (Uncle Iroh) and his Son (Lu Ten) when they were at war at the siege of (Ba-SIng-Se) and (Zuko) was still just little kid. Zuko growing up was surrounded by mostly girls and other female people, the only male engagement he would've had was Male staff of the household, male teachers, his very distant Father and his Uncle Iroh and Cousin Lu Ten if they were around. (Lu Ten) was basically a Big Brother to (Zuko) (Sokka) had no Male role model figures to teach him growing up, as all the men left to help the (Earth Kingdom) fight the War against the (Fire Nation) (Haru) also, but this mostly was due to any Earthbending abilities, there would have been male non-benders around. but still the absence effect of a strong male leader as his Father (Tyro) was lingers

This show is considered one of if not the best animation show of all time and I still think it’s underrated. No words can describe how perfect this show is, can be enjoyed by people of all ages for entirely different reasons, has so many deep and meaningful real life themes, yet still manages to be so quirky and fun, and even still being action packed and awesome. There are so many layers, it’s so dynamic, and yet it is also so simple and easy to follow. No show I’ve ever seen has been able to walk the line of being both lighthearted and childish and yet also so complex and mature so perfectly, effortlessly, and simultaneously. It is a masterpiece in all respects.

i want to add to the analysis of the fire nation cos there some context that gets left out often. its a reflection of the US. Seen especially in the schools where the students are compelled to do a very American like pledge every day, and how Zuko talk about the propaganda he was taught as a child about how the fire nation was "The greatest country on earth and the war was our way of sharing that greatness with the world" which is a VERY familiar line to ones american kids are taught growing up. the cultural moment of ATLA being written during the height of the Iraq War and of the far right gaining more political prominance in the 2000s cant be ignored

one of my favorite moments is aang talking to the past avatars, all of them saying more than just "murder the son of a bitch", they know he don't want to kill ozai, and aang know he must to, and i love the shades of each one, roku seeing in him the redemption of his mistakes, kyoshi saying that killing and indirectly causing a death are the same, kuruk don't want to se his mistakes repeated, and yangchen trumping his arguments based in his air nomad ideolgy, with the air nomads' ideology "selfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs" since i'm a bit edgy, i do salt over him finding a way out with energybending, since kid i'd like to see him killing ozai (i like shades of gray over pure white or all black), but i digress

i think it could’ve worked if we saw Aang learning about energy bending early on when he was first talking to Roku and first learning about the spirit world, or as an extremely spiritual person it’s something he already heard about in passing by the monks. if we had seen him remember it as a possibility, or be reminded somehow, and then go to seek it out through a lion turtle similar to what we see in the show, it could’ve have made better sense and not be such a hot topic with fans. avatar always makes their characters work for their triumphs, especially Aang, so if we had seen him work to learn or be taught energy bending, maybe even beginning from when he’s opening his chakras to control his avatar state. it’s just negating the fact it came from nowhere and given to Aang with little prior knowledge

4:17 I _initially_ misheard: "But its *PRIMARY* inspiration is the *'Hårga'* International Snow & Ice Festival, that is held yearly in Northern China." Of course, you *actually* correctly, & _very clearly,_ enunciated the word "Harbin," which made _WAY_ much more sense! The *'HÅRGA' [DEFINITELY* _NOT_ Chinese snow or ice based!] Festival was of course featured in the 2019 Ari Aster written & directed folk horror movie, 'Midsommar'! [Brief plot line]: 'Having been invited by their mutual Swedish friend Pelle to attend a midsummer celebration at Pelle's ancestral commune, the Hårga, in Hälsingland - in which a 'celebration' occurs only once every 90 yrs - they find themselves in the thrall of a Scandinavian neopagan cult!' I shall end my truncated synopsis there - due to inevitable SPOILERS for 'Midsommar'! - but let’s just say it in *NO* way follows a similar outcome to the wonderful & excellent animated series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'! However, I kinda wish the sincerely godawful M. Night Shyamalan written, co-produced _&_ directed "live action" [if you don’t include the _EXTREMELY_ wooden acting!] 2010 film version of 'The Last Airbender,' *DID* have a comparable, much deserved & _truly_ satisfying conclusion - for *ALL* the characters involved! - to that of 'Midsommar'!😬😳☺️ Edit: This brilliant video - with so much insight into the culturally influenced inspiration, explanation of "bending the Elements" & grounded in its relation to various distinctive styles of martial arts, seamless exploration of darker & comedic themes, & fantastic characters’ growth & development - is a timely reminder that I _DECIDEDLY_ *NEED* to rewatch the 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' animated series, *ASAP!!!*

It is worth pointing out that Zuko never truly struggled with what is right, his inner demon, his constant clinging to the identity as the crown Prince of the fire nation is what's causing his struggles. From episode 1 we learn that Zuko is an honourable man, where other characters like Zhao wouldn't have waited to burn the southern water tribe to the ground after capturing the avatar, Zuko promises to not harm a single one if Aang came willingly. He never resorted to wanton slaughter, even when he had every motive to do so.

Avatar is a well focused show, produced from the beginning to be a self contained story from start to finish, with a clearly defined end goal. Most series don't have a clear focus, let alone a final end goal they aim to reach. Instead, series nowadays just churn out endless episodes and seasons in order to keep people watching for as long as possible. Avatar has such a well built story, taking just the time it needs to do world building, character and story progression, as well as slower paced breaks, where the viewer can take time to relax and enjoy what they see.
