My Grandmother told me when I was 14 years old "Don't listen to people who tell you to wait until you retire to travel, do it while you are young" I have traveled extensively, thanks to my Grandmother. Y’all are so right! That’s why I’m starting a Youth Travel Program to bring US kids from my area to Mexico and Central America. I teach ESL and I want to visit my students’ countries and bring other urban kids who are studying Spanish or not! Let’s collaborate! I’m from Va Beach retiring this June and heading to Mexico! Our country lies to us about needing money to travel. It’s that consumer mindset! Then, we don’t prioritize getting a passport. Then they teach “fear” of everyone and everywhere else but America. Crazy right?

Not for nothing, I think it’s based in a mindset centered in fear. I know some people who haven’t even explored two towns over in their state. Let alone other states in the US. My family was so worried the first time, I went to Mexico by myself as a solo traveler. They gave me all this talk about “oh it’s so expensive and it’s dangerous “. I have an adventurous bold spirit and get excited to explore and meet new people. But I also bring my common sense with me. I’m aware of my surroundings, trust my instincts, and coordinate with other people on where I am. The people of Cabo were so helpful, hospitable, and lovely. Also, I didn’t stay at a resort, I stayed at a diving hostel. && met some really cool people. I think videos like this are important. We don’t naturally converse about travel in our community because it’s often viewed as unattainable. I encourage people to start small and eat at a restaurant with a cultural food you know nothing about or catch a train to a township next to where you are and be a local tourist.

I’m African American and studied abroad in Mexico in college at age 18.I’m now 63 and have been an avid unafraid traveler ever since. I even hitchhiked across Mexico from Veracruz to the Pacific coast of Mexico. (Dumb thing to do but Mexico so safe and innocent back then). I’m now Considering buying a second home in Mexico for retirement. Studying abroad changed my life! After studying in Veracruz Mexico I knew I wanted an international career so I earned my MBA in international and have done fabulous travel by the company’s dime. My career allowed me to travel extensively across Latin America and Europe. I even got a trip to Australia and Kenya. I would encourage young people with the travel bug to consider international careers. Study abroad is a great ways to start.Great hotels, expense account meals, sometimes the companies I worked for would provide me with a driver and security in high crime aware like Rio and Mexico City when corporate execs were getting kidnapped. I felt like such a big shot with armed security taking me everywhere . Plus meeting people for business meetings and schmoozing. My career is over but its been great fun!

As I have traveled I have asked and wished for the same thing. I think a major reason why black Americans don’t travel is because of slavery and all of the trauma we experienced there after. We were afraid to travel to certain states in our own country let alone the world. So the fear of the unknown, questions about racism and wondering how we will be received in other countries is REAL. At least, this was how I felt when I first began traveling abroad. Not to mention all of the socioeconomic disparity that was caused by that evil institution. Black people adopted the hustle culture - everything being about money, working two or three jobs just to stay afloat. Out of that came the poverty mindset, a state of lack, believing that you can’t. There was a time when I believed that only rich people or white people could travel. Not because I was told that, but because that was all I ever saw - It goes so deep. I am happy to say that I see it changing within my generation (i am a millennial). My peers and I are traveling and exploring the world, prioritizing mental health and well being. I give thanks to platforms like KZbin and people like you for showing me what else is possible and broadening my mindset. This year I made the decision to save, quit my job and travel throughout Mexico 🇲🇽, and much of that is because I was inspired by your channel and other travelers sharing their journey on the platform….Anyways, I can go on and on on this topic. Thank you for bringing this discussion to the forefront.

I just returned home from traveling through Guatemala & Costa Rica and made the same observation. While i was traveling i was more often than not the only black person there. I remember back in December i also went to costa rica , i was at a restaurant and this older black men came to talk to me because it was the first time he was seeing a black traveler during his stay in Costa (he was w his wife, no ill intentions whatsoever) but the fact that he pointed out made me think haha. When you said there was a bunch of white europeans kids on the bus i laughed because during my travels ive met SO MANY OF THEM😂💙. Great video

But then you went and moved on! !Everyone is so touchy these days that I am afraid to write a comment on this topic because I'm white, but this is an issue I didn't realize was happening, I think especially because of the growing black expat group here in Merida. I hate to say it, but I think traveling came about because they didn't feel safe or at home in the US anymore, It shocks me that racism is still a thing,.

My 2 cents. I think there are 2 primary answers to this question. 1) Financial. Generally, people with less money have greater priorities like paying the rent and putting food on the table. Traveling is a luxury. IF you can travel once a year or once every few years, you'll just go to a beach vacation and you'll be a TOURIST, not a traveller! 2) Culture. American culture does not prioritize teavel outside the US. What percentage of Americans don't have passports? Europeans and Asians prioritize foreign travel. They go to all corners of the world without fear. They're much more adventurous, because all their parents & friends have been to many other countries, so they do the same.
@TheYarbros
@TheYarbros 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I can affirm both of those. Can we.change the perspective. Can we take away the notion of travel as a luxury to a human being? Can we instill in our kids a thirst for the unknown....that will satisfy their souls to quench?

Amazing video as always. This why I am full time traveling with my kids and showing them the world, so they can see there is more to life than what’s in their back yard. They (and I) have grown so much living on the road the last almost 2 years. I try to encourage as much as us as I can to get up and go. And I know they are starting to heed the calling. Here's what I did. I bought a three-unit property (using FHA and only made $55k a year) and rent out the other units, which pays 100% of my mortgage and utilities. This has allowed me to save my housing expenses, which I use for travel. I have been out of the country every three months for the last year. Hi Yabros. Unfortunately I believe it is FEAR that keeps some of "us" from traveling. For one thing, my sisters all older are always asking me why I want to travel so much. My sisters think I am crazy and unstable. When I went to Portugal, my oldest sister called constantly talking about the war in Ukraine, and telling me I should come home. I have a friend who was born and raised in Tampa Florida and she NEVER goes anywhere, and also told me the same thing. She questioned my motives, then tried to hit me with the scripture saying, 'Be Still and know that I am God', saying I should not be moving around so much. SMH. I am back in Florida for a little bit, but I am leaving again next week. Thank you again for your videos. I am getting some great ideas from you all, especially since I am still able to work remotely. I am thankful that my older children are proud and very encouraging to me on my desire to travel the world. I cannot wait to see more of it. I just rented my house in Florida so its on and poppin!! Stay Blessed!!!

First, in America we only get so many days off a year. And when we do get off, we head on a cruise to the Caribbean or to see family elsewhere in the states. Realistically it's not on our mind or budget to go overseas or down continent. At the same time if you can goto the Caribbean, you can easily hit Canada, Central America, South America..and also hit Africa,Asia and Europe.

Love this topic. I was in the military and visited Turkey and the Azores, since then I’ve been to Puerto Rico and Thailand. I’m older now but still have the desire to travel. When I was growing up no one talked about traveling. In the work world I was in, no one talked about traveling, but somehow I broke through the silence of travel and found my own way. I love to travel, mostly alone. The U.S. is turning into the crazy country, I stay home a lot because of the crime, the pandemic has also slowed me down, but I’m working to pull myself together and get up and go, top of my list is Thailand.

Love your videos, your observations and your comments. We are expats who live full time in Mexico City. We love your attitude about life and your perspective about not only focusing on acquiring financial wealth. We would love to see more people of color in and around our lives. It would appear that when you have young kids that live with you at home, that really decreases your ability to travel and move about with some kind of independence.

I've been traveling since I was 13 years old. My family saw this as an important part of a well rounded education. Although I wasn't born in the U.S. many of my African American friends have traveled extensively too. My nieces, who were born in America, just got back from traveling around Europe. I say all this to say that there are a fair amount of brown and black people who do a lot of foreign travel, including yourselves.

@@TheYarbros Black Americans are much less likely to have ever traveled abroad (49%) than White (75%) or Hispanic Americans (73%). White adults are also more likely to have been to five or more countries (30%) than Black (13%) or Hispanic (15%) adults. These statistics appear to confirm your observations. The impact of economic disparity, with regard to education, may play a significant role in an individual's desire to travel. You don't know what you don't know. If you aren't exposed to the possibility of international travel, it won't even be on your radar. Perhaps videos like yours and others will begin to.open up awareness and remove common misconceptions about travel.

It’s so hard to get out of this place with my present mind frame. I hear so many negative things about different Countries from some travelers, that we may not be so welcomed upon arrival. I get very worried from that possibility. I don’t want to spend money to get treated wrongly, that’s my biggest dilemma with leaving the US. Just watched your video and I have to say I ask the same question. When we travel we're usually the only "Pepper" out there as well so I feel your pain my brother. My thoughts are that most of "us" like doing staycations not sure why but I get that alot from some of my friends and coworkers. Secondly alot of "us" are afraid to travel because we believe some of the negative things we see or hear about through the news outlets or on the internet. I feel like you guys when I see my people out I get "Hyped" also like yeah we're out here. Sometimes when I see our people out I notice they don't like to speak for whatever reason it's disappointing but I always speak. Anyways that's my 1 cent opinion. There's nothing better than traveling and meeting new people as well as understanding new cultures. Keep up the good content. Maybe one day we'll see the Yarbros out there. Happy Travels. BTW right now it's cheaper to travel internationally than domestic within the states.

You're speaking the truth in this video. As a first generation Mexican/Latino American in Texas; culture, money, and fear definitely ring a bell. First of all, had single mom (dead beat unemployed ex) with 6 kids, who put the fear in us to keep the family close. Culturally most Mexicans families don't stray too far from each other and live near by (same street, neighborhood, town). Cultural likeness (language/food/celebrations/etc.) plus, safety in numbers. In America, we're indoctrinated and enslaved by the "American Dream" by obtaining a college degree, be career driven, work hard/long hours and acquiring debt. If you're able to save, then you can retire into the "Golden Years." The "Golden Years" should be when you are healthy and young enough to travel and enjoy life, not when you're old and raggedy. I agree with you that U.S. speaks ill of other countries so Americans will stay and spend their money at home. Keep the truths coming.

My daughter took her 1st flight when she was 4. I was 23 when I flew for the 1st time and I wanted something different for my girl. For her 21st birthday, I sent her to Mexico solo. Now at 27, she travels the world, sometimes alone, without fear. Friends were impressed by my travel. Then a year ago I moved from the US to Mexico and hopefully became the Auntie about which April spoke. Other reasons black folks don't travel, or to expound on y'all's reasons, BFs tend to overvalue stuff and therefore choose to invest their money and energy into acquiring more stuff rather than see and experience the world. They think the more stuff they have, the more they must BE. Many BFs lack curiosity. They are just too okay with what they already know. Fear is also a factor. Fear of difference. Fear of being mistreated. Fear of getting lost. They can't tolerate not knowing. Some of my favorite travel YTrs are Picky Girl Travels the World, Shida on the Loose, Stephanie Perry, and of course, The Yarbros.

Hi Yarbos👍🏾😊. I've been on your Channel for a couple of months (I think). I love ALL of your informative, funny and interesting videos. I can't speak for any other US Blacks but I'll answer why I don't travel. It may NOT be a reason that many can understand, but here's why. I started traveling since I was a baby (my Parents confirmed this, as I don't remember any traveling until I became age 7). My Parents and extended Family (Maternal and definitely Paternal sides) signed my Siblings and Cousins up for everything. My Mother's side was more Domestic, and my Father's side was both Domestic and International. We went Camping, learned to Swim, Biking, Hiking, learning about the outdoors etc. Then we started traveling in our region of the US. Then it was time for a visit to the Nation's Capital and our Family's Roots area (The Southeast, mainly Mississippi but eventually all States in the Southeast.) My Dad (at the time) was a US Marine Vietnam Veteran. He has extensive travel experience. So I ended up in Europe as a Teen. I went to High School in Spain. I navigated a bit through Europe via the Eurorail and local Bus Transport, (at the time when the Euro wasn't the unified Currency in the West). Great learning experiences and lots of Culture Shock. Including being able to drink at age 16 and taking my shoes off to eat at a Mediterranean Restaurant, and yes, learning about the Localities earning 5+weeks of annual vacation (that rolls over).😳 So when my Europe days were over, I ended up in Canada for a year. When I returned to the States, I started working for American Airlines. More traveling (Domestic mostly). Then I got a CDL and drove for 13 years (me, a Female). I lived on the Native American Reservation for 2 years, giving Narrative Driving Tours to Tourists, from all over the world. So super long story short, I'm tired. I'm physically tired. I've been on the go, since I was a little one. I remember telling my Mother at age 21, I was tired. She said "tired? Honey you are just getting started". I have Friends who love my background, stating (at age 18) "if I did all that you did, up to age 18, I'd be happy for the rest of my life." My First time on a plane? Age 12 Travel can be cheap (depends on the month). I've had a Passport since I was a Kid. When I traveled: Rick Steves, VHS Tapes and PBS, was my Social Media. Photo Albums is where we "posted" our pictures. I'm only 44. I stopped traveling in 2005-2020 (15 years). I broke the 15 year travel drought last year. In October 2021, I spent one week in Mexico (Puerto Peñasco). I can't say it revived me, but I'm trying. No Trips planned for 2022 or 2023. So there's my story.🎒🧳🛍👍🏾

This is the million dollar question. I love that you both purposed this question because it's been a discussion between myself and my husband as well. We currently live in Baja California, Mexico and we don't see "us" out here. When we do and we ask what do you do where do you hang out, most of them say at home. So you move to a new country but you don't leave the house? It makes me sad. America has brainwashed us so bad. In more ways than one. I believe we travel but we don't veer too far off the beaten path. We stay in our resorts or near our hotels. I also believe that it's a money thing. We don't always believe we have the funds to be able to travel and experience the world. It's never been in grained in us. My husband and I were born and raised in Detroit and when our families found out we moved to Mexico they were so confused. Why would you do that? And my response was why not? God gave us this vast world so why not explore and experience it? One of my cousins had never been on a plane, he used to say if he couldn't get there in the car he wasn't going. That's that "in the box thinking" and I'm trying to live my life outside the box. I'm happy to report that he has finally opened his mind to get on the plane and travel because he's watched my husband and I travel & live out of the country. I also think we have these limited mindsets that's keep us stuck and bound in our little safe bubbles. My mother instilled in me to travel. I didn't understand it then but after she passed, I get it now. I love traveling and experiencing the world. I'm saving up some coin now to get back out there! Anyways, I'm just glad that I can see people that look like me in these KZbin streets bringing awareness. It's so important to continue these conversations. Now I'm a go back and watch the rest of this video lol. P.S. I'm here for the wild sex in exotic places!!!! (With your significant other) Yessss 🤣🤣🤣

👏🏾 I’ve talked to white Americans who were surprised that I was American, and not in the military! 😳 But, we are missing a bit. Africans are everywhere! I’ve gone to Copenhagen many times (for a beer festival 🍻) and each time I meet a young, African-American student. I think we’re in pockets. Travel is in my genetics. All of my relatives travel. I went to a family reunion in Atlanta, and found out most of them work for Delta and get those travel benefits. But, the US doesn’t value time off. Many European students get a gap year to travel.

Definitely a different culture and upbringing. Young Europeans intern at my place of work. For one, they aren’t pushed to immediately go to college after high school. Some of them graduate high school before 18. Many of them after high school are encouraged to travel and backpack, see the world and stay in hostels, learn a new language, work first before college, meet people from other places, go to college in another country, go to those immersion language schools, etc…many of them don’t start college til a little later after high school. They will work in their country and save money to travel for a year or more. I met one intern who said she was the youngest in her college class at 25 yo. She had already traveled to several countries and backpacked and attended a Spanish language school in Miami. So she already knew 3 languages. I agree that Blk folks focus on generational wealth as far as cash money. We need to teach our kids to make money but strive for balance, peace,to enjoy life, to actually live, learn, laugh, teach, do something they love and that life is not about gaining material items.

I never had the opportunity to go on a vacation as a child. 2017 I started cruising and it opened my eyes. I was able to go to Mexico, The Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and the Bahamas on 3 different cruises. I just got my passport last year. Went back to Mexico. Going to D.R. next week. A lot of us didn't know it was possible because our parents didn't travel. Or think it's expensive. When I worked in hotels I found out that a lot of European people have at least a month of vacation and it blew my mind. I met a family of 4 (mom, dad, grown son and daughter) that came to America for vacation. They rented a car and drove around the county for a month. I live in New Orleans. I was talking to them and mentioned I was going to Memphis the next week. They said that they were going there as well. I ran into those same people at the Civil Rights Museum the next week. 🤯🤯🤯
