Hey all! I wanted to make a video on blocking out characters for sculpting. So.. uh.. here it is! I wanted this to be something that was software and medium agnostic so that it could apply to more people. Digital sculpting is tough, but I think if you practice those primary forms through doing character blockouts more often, you will see GREAT SUCCESS. hah. Anyway, hope the video is helpful! Feel free to throw any questions in the comments and if you are looking for more of a step by step guide on blocking out characters, check the link below. Okay I love you goodbye.
Want a step by step process guide for blocking out characters in ZBrush? Check out my character blockout tutorial below as well as some of my more recent videos for more awesome ZBrush sculpting tips and tricks!

When you start you're gonna want to quit. When they do it it looks so easy but it's not. One thing you need to remember is that if you really practice every day, at least one character or 1hr doing 3D a day. In 1 year/6 months. You'll be able to do what he can do probably. Just give it time and don't give up.

I get the main idea of blockout, but what I want to know are the specifics around your workflow, like are you using some kind of boolean operation to combine your meshes? When do you increase the polycount(quality) of the meshes? Before or after you combine them?

But What is your though process in this stage in ZBrush? You work in low poly and subdivide to add ridges and details, but what if you need to move things too much around? soon you'll have stretched and squished polygons in areas.... So, do you ZRemesh it every now and then? (but that looses details, and might mess topology, though) ...You don't seem to work with Sculptriss On... I know that you already have so much experience that those issues often don't even show up in your demos, but how would you deal with them if they did? Thank you.

If you draw, this is quite essential, that's why my first chars looked quite good :v Also good video :3 (I started blender quite early, sure with practice I will get even better, I'm kind of a beginner, but all my drawing knowledge, like anatomy, forms and that is reaally helpful, would recommend starting with drawing fundamentals and then go into sculpting, because if you understand how to make 3d things on 2d then most of the hardwork sure is done)
@WCCXtra

Totally agree. I just started learning Blender last month (former Max user) and dipped into the sculpting tools last week. I was a little surprised at how easy it was to make something convincing. I'm probably going to do two types of anatomy studies - a 2D study and the same reference in a sculpt study.

I am so fucked, I studied 3d modeling, and am proficient with Zbrush, however, I am also a computer addict, and someone who gets anxiety attacks as soon as he feels he needs to do something for any reason other than "It happened to be what I felt like doing". This means that as soon as modeling and drawing became something I had to do, I stopped doing it, and I just don't know how to get myself to start again. The more I try to force myself, the more my mind rebels against it. I play D&D, so I figured I'd try to make those characters to 3d print and even that I could not convince myself to do because I felt forced by myself. God I wish I could just sculpt for hours the way I waste my life for hours and just enjoy it without stress.....

I tend to model something in maya and then import it to zbrush afterwards. We use high poly to low poly workflow at my college (mainly because of the shit PCs) and i'm quite new to zbrush (I especially hate the camera controls and have trouble with them) , so it would be great if you had any basic advice for me since i cant really afford your course. P.S. You might want to switch to a monthly subscription, rather than having to pay a whopper at the start. A lot off people who would want to join your course would mainly be students trying to get into industry meaning they wouldn't necessarily be willing to part with a good portion of their bank account for an online course which is already risky enough.

really nice video and helpful tips. do you have a video where you go into very detail what steps you are doing to get what we see here in the video? for me personally, it applies 100% what you say about moving on too early, because I don't get what I want during blockout. I use dynamesh from the very beginning and it feels like i'm doing something wrong from the very start. Your sculpt has at 3:54 already such a nice and clean topology. What are the different steps you are going through? hope this is somehow understandable :D

Blender is free. While tools are named differently it is similar to Zbrush that you can follow his tutorials and you can practice enough to know what your doing enough that a switch of programs should work out ok. Just Maya and 3D Max need some work before you buy and hopefully you don’t have to.

Does this blockout also works for organic Sculpting too and not just Stylized?. what if i want to start a realistic looking humanoid Orc or even a Human. Should i do this type of Blocking in order to make the basic shapes?
@SleepyMatt-zzz
@SleepyMatt-zzz 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, blocking borrows a lot of very old traditional art theories involving anatomy, one of which is breaking down the body, and the face, into basic shapes. Think about diagrams you may have seen on something like this, or exercises you may have done in highschool/University. The old masters would have had to do something similar if they were working on something more finite like stone or marble, mediums that would cause a lot of grief if mistakes were made.

I really love your sculptures but I would really wish you would make a video about the basic stuff like how do you make those seperate meshes? does it have a shortcut?, how do you cut an symmetrical thing and still work on it like in 4:36?, what resolution do you use? Do you change them?, 1:20 how did you clone that cheek that easyly? I'm a total beginner and love watching this kinda stuff but it gets overwhelming when there is so many techniques and styles. I wish you would make a video (or series) about this kind of absolute basics. I know you have a course and you probably teach these there but 699$ is just so big of a number specially for someone like me that doesn't live in US.
