When I went to school in 1940' 50's only country kids rode the school bus. If you lived within the city limits , you walked to school. Rain or shine, snow or ice, didn't matter. We did NOT have "snow days", either. If the school buses weren't able to pick up the country kids, then when they did, the kids had to make up any lessons missed. I remember only one day that classes were cancelled. i was a sophomore in h s. A very strong straight line winds blew out the windows on the south side of the school. The next day we went to school with boarded up windows. It was dark in the spanish class I had then. We never thought it was cruel to have to walk to school in INCHES of snow. Most if not all thought it was a privilege to go to school.

The overhead flashing red lights on school buses work off of a button that the door lever rests against. When the lever is released (to open the door) the lights are engaged and flash. This may vary from state to state but in most I’m certain it is required to have the lights going at any stop the bus makes

The reason was because a school bus in Congers, NY a school bus driver heard a train horn, and started driving faster towards the railroad crossing, to beat a Penn Central fast freight. The bus lost. This incident led to the law of buses stopping at crossings.
@pickled514 жыл бұрын
I often wonder why when a school bus is crossing a railroad where there are gates and signals to prevent vehicles from crossing when a train comes thorough, why a school bus still has to stop. This action causes slowdowns to traffic, especially in congested areas. I am sure this just dates back to the days when few railroad crossings had these safety devices. The laws should be changed so school buses only stop at train crossings with no gates or signals. Also, when I went to school in the late 1950's and the 1960's, most kids either walked to school or took a school bus. Very few parents ever took or picked up their children from school. Parents being chauffeurs for their children seems to not have appeared until the late 1980's and the 1990's. Why this trend took place still baffles me.

I would mostly ride the bus, but I occassionally would get rides (especially when it was time to do the school play), and in later years, I would drive myself. I have several funny bus stories. one time, we had a half day, and on the ride home, we crossed a railroad track. the driver stopped, as she's supposed to, but when we crossed the track, I looked out the window, and through the fog, I made out 3 lights in the distance. I laughed, because I realized that we came close to getting t-boned, and the driver didn't notice out of a simple fluke.

This is the real reason bus drivers are required to stop and listen On Dec. 1, 1938, a school bus was heading to Jordan High School through a dense winter storm as a loaded Denver and Rio Grande freight train rolled north toward Salt Lake City, Near the railroad crossing at 10200 South and 400 West, the driver stopped the bus. He opened the door to look beyond the thick fog, but did not see the 80-plus car "Flying Ute" train approaching at over 50 miles per hour. At 8:43 a.m., the bus pulled slowly forward across the tracks. Upon seeing the bus, the train crew immediately applied the brakes, but the collision was inevitable. The collision claimed the lives of 23 children and the bus driver. The 15 survivors faced a lifetime of serious physical injuries and emotional scars. In the wake of the horrific crash, came railroad crossing laws, mechanical crossing arms and national regulations that are still in place today - including the mandatory requirement for bus drivers to not only stop at railroad crossings, but also to open their door and driver side window to look and listen for oncoming trains,

There was another accident in Utah during the 1930s. A school bus driver was on his usual route at the usual time. Normally trains were too. He normally never encountered a train at the railroad crossing. One day a train was running late. It hit the school bus, killing a couple of dozen students. He did not hear the train.

I rode the school bus to school in grade school and yes I love riding on though my siblings didn't .. I also drove school bus a few years ago .. and enjoyed it and yes we have features now a button to cancell fans, radio and other noise making devices .. though wish it did shut a few kids up LOL.. though we did flash the dome lights and that signaled to the kids to be quiet until the lights goes off.
