Can I be cremated? Is it okay to donate my body to science? What about the relics of Saints, they aren't buried in the ground?
Last week, Fr. Mike began our discussion on death and burial, especially when it comes to the Catholic Church's teaching on "scattering your ashes." Today, he answers some of the most common questions from the comments of that video and delves deeper into why we should listen to our Mother, the Church, when she is instructing and guiding us in these matters.
❓ Have ideas for future videos ❓ Topics you want to hear about ❓ Questions you want answered ❓ Make sure to put #AskAscension in your comment 👍

Back in about 1992, I was reading our Catholic newspaper and said to my husband,"listen to this, it says now it's Ok to get cremated, but you can't bring the ashes in Church"My 4 yr. old grandson looked up from his coloring and said, "Oh yes you can grandma, 'cause that's where I got mine"

Thank you for this. My grandfather, who wasn’t Catholic, passed away recently and his funeral was today. He wanted to be cremated and buried in the family plot and my grandmother honored those wishes. It’s been heavy on my heart all day and hearing this at just the right time really feels as if a weight has been lifted. Thank you again, god bless you.

So glad you got this burden lifted from your mind. I have been catholic since 1978 and have lost 3 of my family members.Only one out of the three were catholic and 2 of them were cremated and the other was buried in the same cemetary that I will be buried with a full funeral(that was my husband). My daughter and her son were both cremated and we have spread their ashes where they requested. My daughter was raised Catholic but her son was not. Does that mean she is in Heaven now but her son is not? That would be so sad to think they are not in Heaven together. They were so very close.

It is important to talk about death with your loved one. My husband and I talked frequently as to what our wishes were. It was a good thing because he died unexpectedly this pass June. He wanted to be cremated but we still had a viewing. We also talked about where he wanted to be buried and at the last minute he decided he wanted to be buried in the ground next to me. This discussion took place about 3 weeks before he died. Glad we had the talk

Smartest thing I did with an inheritance from my mother was to pre-pay two funeral plans for me and my spouse just before Corvid rocketed us into the new normal. At the same time I went online and purchased two matching urns, with little vaults for burying them in spaces we purchased in the Churchyard of the country Church where we had been married. The children and grandchildren know our burial plans. In this terrible inflation, they will not be burdened with the costs of burying us. I recommend anyone who is over 60 and can afford to, pre-pay your cremation/ funeral now, and tell your pastor what readings and hymns you want, so the grandkids don't choose something "modern and tasteless." And BTW, I specified that everybody wear black to concentrate the mind on the fact of death and the necessity of praying for the souls of the departed. One year afterward, if they like, and AFTER the "Year's mind Mass", they can throw a party to "celebrate" our lives.

Under the last video, there were way too many people who completely misunderstood your point, Fr. Mike. I actually read some of the comments before I watched the video, and when I finally did, I was surprised that you didn't say at all what so many people were accusing you of, like for example that people whose ashes were scattered won't end up in heaven. I honestly think it's because from what I can see (I'm not American), the American culture is so heavily influenced by Protestantism, that the Sola Scriptura principle is applied to everything religious, not just the Bible, which means that everything has to be taken literally and absolutely, with no room for nuance at all. Btw, I noticed that you tried to speak slower in this video, probably because of all the comments that accused you of speaking too fast. I have no problem with your fast way of speaking. I actually like it. It's part of your character and what makes you so charming, so you shouldn't be ashamed of it. :) God bless you, Fr. Mike! Edit: I love that you had the courage to call out the "my way" attitude so many people responded with. It's a disease that plagues modern Christians (including myself) and many don't even realize how fundamentally satanic it is.

Everyone please know WE are all spiritual beings. One with God. As spirit we can never ever ever be separate from God. Whether you are buried, cremated, ashes spread , put into a necklace, blown up, dissolved, separated into a thousand pieces, it makes absolutely no difference. Immediately at death your spirit (you) leaves the body. The body was simply a vehicle for a short time. It's like an old car , finished and ready to be thrown away now. YOU ( spirit, soul, consciousness) are eternal and safe. Any teaching that creates fear that you could ever be separate from God is a false belief based on fear. God is love , there is no fear in God. God never delivers fear...only love. So forget all this talk of making a mistake and know you are unconditionally loved and eternally safe. Then you can live with joy...forever. Peace to all.

You are endangering people's eternity with this talk. Your choice not to agree with it, but as you haven't died and experienced what happens when body and soul are reunited, you have absolutely NO EXPERTISE to speak on this and direct people away from what their faith dictates is the correct way to handle it. I think you need to be more respectful of others's faith.

When my son died suddenly, we had him cremated and interned in a niche in a cemetery that was blessed by the church. We had a memorial mass first but we wanted him to have a stone with his name and date of birth so the world would know he lived and loved and is loved. Then we moved and we moved his ashes with us . He is still part of our family. We visit the cemetery for every holiday birthday and family event. His sister and her husband often visit it’s him and our granddaughter and her fiancée also stop by the cemetery and are planning to have a PowerPoint presentation of him at their wedding. I know he knows how much we love him, how much we miss him and that we respect how much being a Catholic meant to him.

My husband wanted to be cremated after planning his father's funeral. He was horrified by the cost. When he passed 6 years ago I honored his wishes. He was not Catholic. I am. I have planned my funeral, doing a pre paid plan. I spoke to my parish priest about my funeral before I when to the funeral home to do the pre paid plan to be sure I was not choosing something The Church would disapprove. I chose what hymns I wished sung and who I preferred to be the cantor. I will have a regular visitation with the rosary the evening before my funeral Mass. I will have a rented coffin. After my funeral Mass I will be cremated and both my husband and I will be interred at the same time together.

Thanks, Fr. Mike! I have decided to have a natural burial...no embalming. There are funeral homes that will do this now here in Florida, and cemeteries that allow it. The body is cleaned and kept very cold until the time of burial and then wrapped in a cloth of natural fibers such as cotton or linen (as our Lord's Body was before He was laid in the tomb). You can be buried only in the shroud, or be placed in a casket woven of grasses, sort of like a wicker basket. I'd like to be buried facing east as the early Christians did (and many do today). Embalming fluid is so unnaturally harsh, and I don't want it in my body. It also seeps out into the ground causing problems for the environment.

I know someone who had her mum and dad turned into jewellery, she said by wearing it she felt close to them, another actually has some of the ashes of her mum in a necklace. I find it a very odd thing to do. So glad the Catholic church has stopped the relic thing, that never felt right to me either. I have also heard people say they don't want to be eaten by worms, they seem to forget that at that point they are dead !! Keep the videos coming Father Mike, they are always thought provoking, thank you.

You're in a wooden/metal box that is highly resistant to decomposition. Your body is dehydrated and mummified with embalming fluid. Which is highly toxic to living organisms. I don't think worms could get to you in modern burial practices. Even if they did, i doubt they'd be interested in eating you. You'd dehydrated and decompose extremely slowly.

I come from a culture that makes business out of someone dying. This has made me loath the whole business of being buried and fundraising over my death. I was convinced that if I can get cremated then I will be at peace knowing no one will take advantage of the situation. Thank you father for helping me understand the connection between my faith and my body and soul. Now I am ambivalent to cremation just for my reasons. I can express my will and also have my body laid to rest according to my faith.

Great talk! I'm glad the Church has standards about remains. In life, sometimes we do dumb things with our bodies, so it makes sense that in life and death the Church warns us of the boundaries about what's proper to do with our bodies. I've heard last requests which have made me very uncomfortable. So, I'm with you on some last requests remaining unfulfilled.

Thank you, I've been thinking lots on this lately. When I die I'd like to be buried in the ground in a sunny spot, and wildflowers planted for the bees above. I hope I can get a place blessed to do this. But hopefully not for a while yet anyway, it's something that I'd feel at peace with, more than a heavy cemetery place. But not yet awhile anyway. I liked your concept of the body..l think we do a lot of 'rejection of the ways of the flesh' but you are actually saying the body can and should be a good, holy and blessed thing. Thank you Fr. Mike! This is a never-ending evolving topic which leads to many places. My question/comment is regarding organ donation. You need to be declared “brain dead” to harvest organs which means they need to keep you “alive”. Is this not a major desecration? The term ”brain dead” was manufactured specifically for organ donation. Donating your second kidney, for example, while you are in good health and can still live while giving life to another is a great gift. The term ”brain death” is a very foggy grey and leaves a lot of room for…….. “grave” manipulation. 🤨 God Bless You and keep you. Linda FEHR

Time will alter things. After 2 or 3 years you can bring up the subject. Rethink burying ashes at a homestead. Eventually homes get torn down and developers build apartments or shopping centres on them. Safest place is a cemetery, even if it's a small country one. Just make sure it's officially recognised by the county where it is.

I lost my baby girl at the age of 26 yrs old. Someone dropped a recliner chair on the freeway causing her to go into the median and over like a slip and slide to the opposite side of the road where a man was not paying attention because he was on his phone. He drove into her car even though everyone else saw her coming across. He drove toward her and landed on top of her killing instantly. That was my baby girl. I had said the Rosary many times before asking God to please never take my children from me. And then that happens. I was so angry at God. I have my baby’s ashes because one I put them in the ground I will longer have them. I treat her ashes with importance because that is all I have left of her. He fiance was mad at me because he said she is supposed to be in the ground. Please tell me what God wants me to do with them. I pray that she is with the Blessed Mother, Jesus/god the Father and all the Saints. My Lacey is with her baby sister brother or sister I miscarried.

I have no intention of lying to a man of God, so if I'm being honest, there's this: No surprise that many burials with dignity require money that many simply don't have. Distrust in mortuaries have risen due to; body stacking, shaming, capitalization on grief, and other atrocities. I find myself having to make this decision quickly, as my best friend has a terminal heart condition. Thanks to your explanation (if I'm still alive at the time), I will treat his remains with respect. I will also do the same for his mothers' ashes that have a place of honor in his home.

Father Mike, I understand what you are talking about. I believe that Our Father is so merciful that He understands why my daughter's ashes are near me on the table. I believe that God is so merciful to me that if my daughter's ashes comfort me by being near me at home, He's ok with it. Remember the pharisees and Sadducees had all kinds of rules and Jesus pretty much told them they were wrong. I believe that the Catholic rules puts our Father, Our God in a box. My God can do anything that us humans deem 'impossible'. If Our Father wants to renew my daughter's body and I had scattered her ashes at the four corners of the earth, He will command her ashes to come together, and they would obey and come together for Him. Yes, I have her ashes in a cross. I wanted her to be with me when I graduated college. I have shattered her ashes at different beaches because she LOVED the beach. Do I think I disrespect her or her body? No, I think she is pleased with being at the beach all the time and I think God recognize my intent of shattering her ashes at the beach. The ocean is a bridge to the 'other side'. Water is very symbolic in the bible. The first miracle involved water. Jesus is baptized in the river Jordan. The woman at the well. Jesus asking for water to drink from her. Jesus walking on water. Jesus calming the sea. Jesus washes feet. In fact, water is mentioned a total of 722 times in the bible. More often than faith, hope, prayer, and worship. Water is such an essential component of life, it was created on the very first day. In Revelations water is mentioned again, and it is almost the last words of the Bible. Revelations 22:17, “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let everyone who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes would take the water of life as a gift.” Water flows throughout the scripture, and this should remind us of its importance…both spiritually and physically. Jesus, the source of Living Water, extends an invitation to all who thirst. So, I believe that God is so merciful that He is ok with her ashes with me at home. When I die, her ashes will be entombed with me at a cemetary.

I think this comes under the verse, If I give my body to be burned and have not love. Corinthians 13. Some saints were burnt, like St Joan. Some poor Christians are blown to bits in war, so 😕 God understands

Nice...We are catholic, scattered our son's ashes from a mountain top on Shenandoah, that is God's holy ground to us because He created it. We prayed and scattered the ashes. The body is a husk.

I believe in the resurrection of the body. Saying that if I am buried rather than cremated I have a problem that thousands of years from now I don't want some archeologist digging me up and desecrating my remains if there is any. I plan on being being Cremated and buried next to my daughter in our family plot in a Catholic Cemetery to wait for the Resurrection. Oh yes I have all this set up now before I pass with a Cremation service that I prepaid for.People regardless of age should do some final planing and not put the financial burden on the family.

My aunt who was not Catholic was cremated per her wish. I don't if she wanted her ashes distribuited among her three children and my mom. I remembered her daughter in law, saying that she had at her house, my mom's portion of her ashes. I calmly replied, y'all need to reunite her ashes and bury her. My cousin, her daughter, expects me to bury my mom with my aunt's ashes. My mom raised her half sister, my aunt, after their passed away. I'm glad you explained why is good to donate organs. I'm a donor organ but wasn't sure if the Church allowed organs' donation, and of cadavers. I'll keep my donor option. Thank you for a clear, positive and always welcome explanation of what God wants and expects from us.

Fr. If we come from dust, and dust we return. And God will come for all his children, dust or not God comes for his children. I believe that just as long we bless he dead we are in God's favor.
