When my son died suddenly, we had him cremated and interned in a niche in a cemetery that was blessed by the church. We had a memorial mass first but we wanted him to have a stone with his name and date of birth so the world would know he lived and loved and is loved. Then we moved and we moved his ashes with us . He is still part of our family. We visit the cemetery for every holiday birthday and family event. His sister and her husband often visit it’s him and our granddaughter and her fiancée also stop by the cemetery and are planning to have a PowerPoint presentation of him at their wedding. I know he knows how much we love him, how much we miss him and that we respect how much being a Catholic meant to him.

Thank you for this. My grandfather, who wasn’t Catholic, passed away recently and his funeral was today. He wanted to be cremated and buried in the family plot and my grandmother honored those wishes. It’s been heavy on my heart all day and hearing this at just the right time really feels as if a weight has been lifted. Thank you again, god bless you.

So glad you got this burden lifted from your mind. I have been catholic since 1978 and have lost 3 of my family members.Only one out of the three were catholic and 2 of them were cremated and the other was buried in the same cemetary that I will be buried with a full funeral(that was my husband). My daughter and her son were both cremated and we have spread their ashes where they requested. My daughter was raised Catholic but her son was not. Does that mean she is in Heaven now but her son is not? That would be so sad to think they are not in Heaven together. They were so very close.

Smartest thing I did with an inheritance from my mother was to pre-pay two funeral plans for me and my spouse just before Corvid rocketed us into the new normal. At the same time I went online and purchased two matching urns, with little vaults for burying them in spaces we purchased in the Churchyard of the country Church where we had been married. The children and grandchildren know our burial plans. In this terrible inflation, they will not be burdened with the costs of burying us. I recommend anyone who is over 60 and can afford to, pre-pay your cremation/ funeral now, and tell your pastor what readings and hymns you want, so the grandkids don't choose something "modern and tasteless." And BTW, I specified that everybody wear black to concentrate the mind on the fact of death and the necessity of praying for the souls of the departed. One year afterward, if they like, and AFTER the "Year's mind Mass", they can throw a party to "celebrate" our lives.

Thanks, Fr. Mike! I have decided to have a natural burial...no embalming. There are funeral homes that will do this now here in Florida, and cemeteries that allow it. The body is cleaned and kept very cold until the time of burial and then wrapped in a cloth of natural fibers such as cotton or linen (as our Lord's Body was before He was laid in the tomb). You can be buried only in the shroud, or be placed in a casket woven of grasses, sort of like a wicker basket. I'd like to be buried facing east as the early Christians did (and many do today). Embalming fluid is so unnaturally harsh, and I don't want it in my body. It also seeps out into the ground causing problems for the environment.

I come from a culture that makes business out of someone dying. This has made me loath the whole business of being buried and fundraising over my death. I was convinced that if I can get cremated then I will be at peace knowing no one will take advantage of the situation. Thank you father for helping me understand the connection between my faith and my body and soul. Now I am ambivalent to cremation just for my reasons. I can express my will and also have my body laid to rest according to my faith.

Under the last video, there were way too many people who completely misunderstood your point, Fr. Mike. I actually read some of the comments before I watched the video, and when I finally did, I was surprised that you didn't say at all what so many people were accusing you of, like for example that people whose ashes were scattered won't end up in heaven. I honestly think it's because from what I can see (I'm not American), the American culture is so heavily influenced by Protestantism, that the Sola Scriptura principle is applied to everything religious, not just the Bible, which means that everything has to be taken literally and absolutely, with no room for nuance at all. Btw, I noticed that you tried to speak slower in this video, probably because of all the comments that accused you of speaking too fast. I have no problem with your fast way of speaking. I actually like it. It's part of your character and what makes you so charming, so you shouldn't be ashamed of it. :) God bless you, Fr. Mike! Edit: I love that you had the courage to call out the "my way" attitude so many people responded with. It's a disease that plagues modern Christians (including myself) and many don't even realize how fundamentally satanic it is.

My husband wanted to be cremated after planning his father's funeral. He was horrified by the cost. When he passed 6 years ago I honored his wishes. He was not Catholic. I am. I have planned my funeral, doing a pre paid plan. I spoke to my parish priest about my funeral before I when to the funeral home to do the pre paid plan to be sure I was not choosing something The Church would disapprove. I chose what hymns I wished sung and who I preferred to be the cantor. I will have a regular visitation with the rosary the evening before my funeral Mass. I will have a rented coffin. Losing both of them was an insanely horrific financial blow to us. We could barely afford their cremations, and right now our priority is to get back on our feet financially. When we are ready, we will definitely bury them. Until then, we plan to keep their ashes with us and protected.

I hope I can get a place blessed to do this. But hopefully not for a while yet anyway, it's something that I'd feel at peace with, more than a heavy cemetery place. But not yet awhile anyway. You're in a wooden/metal box that is highly resistant to decomposition. Your body is dehydrated and mummified with embalming fluid. Which is highly toxic to living organisms. I don't think worms could get to you in modern burial practices. Even if they did, i doubt they'd be interested in eating you. You'd dehydrated and decompose extremely slowly.

Thank you Fr. Mike! This is a never-ending evolving topic which leads to many places. My question/comment is regarding organ donation. You need to be declared “brain dead” to harvest organs which means they need to keep you “alive”. Is this not a major desecration? The term ”brain dead” was manufactured specifically for organ donation. Donating your second kidney, for example, while you are in good health and can still live while giving life to another is a great gift. The term ”brain death” is a very foggy grey and leaves a lot of room for…….. “grave” manipulation. 🤨 God Bless You and keep you. Linda FEHR

Time will alter things. After 2 or 3 years you can bring up the subject. Rethink burying ashes at a homestead. Eventually homes get torn down and developers build apartments or shopping centres on them. Safest place is a cemetery, even if it's a small country one. Just make sure it's officially recognised by the county where it is.

I’ve always had a fear of being buried alive I have a sister who, (10 years older) while we are very close and attend mass together, loves to torment me with episodes of The Twilight Zone. When you mentioned, do you want to wake up in an oven? I screamed. My sister laughs hysterically but not me . I will say that i gained some peace when we were allowed to tend to our beloved Mother when she passed. Take care, Fr. Mike. I love to hear you speak. I’m glad that you like to hit on tough subjects. The younger generation in my family listen to you often. No one will put me in an oven. Are you a middle child (like my sister)? 😮❤😅

I am so grateful for the education that Ascension presents and Father Mike have offered me as a convert. I was so ill educated as a Christian and then as a Catholic that even though I had a desire to learn these things like my understanding of body and soul/human nature, I just did not know these basic concepts of my own faith. I had long believed that the body little mattered. It was just the vehicle my soul was driving around this life. I therefore fell into wrong thinking, did it even matter then who I loved or how I loved in the earthly sense? I fell into thinking I don't care if I take great care of my body as long as my soul was okay? I thought things like I can hardly wait to kick off this mortal coil and be free of my body and just be a spirit in the next reality. I can't tell you the number of Christians I meet that think exactly like that, heck even Catholics. Only when I applied the reason, logic and foundational and consistent principles of the Catholic faith and did I begin to undestand the theology of respect for my body, our bodies is a part of God's divine plan, the construction and purpose of our physical life and how we relate to each other, recognize our own worth and the worth and dignity of others. I only wish I had been educated in Catholic theology all along. A clasical Catholic education would have helped me avoid many mistakes, wrong thinking and thus errors that have not been good for me. Thank you for your effort to educate people on the consistent and great good of Catholic reasoning. I pray people hear this.

If a body is found on the street can we pray for their soul? Cause I found a person who killed himself, and I just prayed for his soul but I didn’t inform anyone cause it was 1st shocking view. 💔 But I know what to do next time.

@adrianjohnson7920

It is most important that they be prayed for. Even if you didn't know their name, you can go to a priest and request a Requiem Mass for their soul. This is a great act of spiritual charity, and God will reward you for it. You can still do it now, as there is no "time" in eternity, and the graces of the Masses will still benefit that soul, and get him out of Purgatory if he needs that. If you yourself can attend that Mass, there will be healing of memories for you also; perhaps God intended you to find that person's body so that you (rather than another) would care for them spiritually with prayer. There are no "coincidences", but that a greater blessing will come if you look for God's will in the circumstances.

I remember the verse on dry bones. This issue has been bugging me for long time because I remember one line in the Bible which says that in the end time our body will be glorified and the dead will raise from their tomb. What if the body is cremated and the ashes scattered how can they be raised? Thank you.

I think this comes under the verse, If I give my body to be burned and have not love. Corinthians 13. Some saints were burnt, like St Joan. Some poor Christians are blown to bits in war, so 😕 God understands

I'm so glad I found this video. I always wondered what would happen to my ashes in the future because I doubt my great, great, great-grandchildren will really care what happens to that little urn that sits on the mantle. Also, I agree with your sister about being in a coffin. 😦

What if someone has unknowingly scattered their loved one’s ashes or portions of the cremains thinking they were doing the right thing honoring that person? For instance scattering at sea?

If you didn’t know better it’s not a sin. Go to confession and the priest will explain. Now that you know better, don’t repeat that behavior. That’s what my priest told me. I scattered some of my husband’s cremains per his request BEFORE I returned to Catholicism and found out it was not right. I gathered back the little family urns that remained and had them placed in the vault with rest of his cremains.

My Catholic mom and dad got a crypt to be buried together. Sadly my Dad passed in his early 50s, and my brother passed a few years later. My mom wanted to be buried with both of them, but a third casket would not fit, so she opted to be cremated so she could be in the same crypt with them.

I understand that the study of medical science is not always ethical. It's a bit ironic though that a lot of cutting edge medical research came from the field's lack of ethics. As an example, see HeLa cells.

Thank you for diving deeper into this topic. I've no doubt there are many people that will benefit from your explanation, as I will. I have no intention of lying to a man of God, so if I'm being honest, there's this: No surprise that many burials with dignity require money that many simply don't have. Distrust in mortuaries have risen due to; body stacking, shaming, capitalization on grief, and other atrocities. I find myself having to make this decision quickly, as my best friend has a terminal heart condition. Thanks to your explanation (if I'm still alive at the time), I will treat his remains with respect. I will also do the same for his mothers' ashes that have a place of honor in his home.

Everyone please know WE are all spiritual beings. One with God. As spirit we can never ever ever be separate from God. Whether you are buried, cremated, ashes spread , put into a necklace, blown up, dissolved, separated into a thousand pieces, it makes absolutely no difference. Immediately at death your spirit (you) leaves the body. The body was simply a vehicle for a short time. It's like an old car , finished and ready to be thrown away now. YOU ( spirit, soul, consciousness) are eternal and safe. Any teaching that creates fear that you could ever be separate from God is a false belief based on fear. God is love , there is no fear in God. God never delivers fear...only love. So forget all this talk of making a mistake and know you are unconditionally loved and eternally safe. Then you can live with joy...forever. Peace to all.

You are endangering people's eternity with this talk. Your choice not to agree with it, but as you haven't died and experienced what happens when body and soul are reunited, you have absolutely NO EXPERTISE to speak on this and direct people away from what their faith dictates is the correct way to handle it. I think you need to be more respectful of others's faith.
