Deep sleep is simply a state that contains no objects whatsoever. Without objects, there is no memory of objects. Without memory of objects, there is no experience of time. The experience of temporal duration is an illusion that owes it's existence entirely to memory.

While Rupert made some wonderful points, I wish he would have simply answered: You can't say you don't experience deep sleep, only that you have no memory of that experience. Memories require thoughts and thoughts require objects, and the very definition of deep sleep is the absence of objects for the mind to conceive or perceive.

No. You shouldn’t wish that. He could indeed say you don’t experience deep sleep (though as you point out he didn’t go there) Without thought to breath life into the identity of the experiencer, there is no I, in the sense that the questioner intended, to experience. Even ‘there is an experience of deep sleep’ is meaningless without reference to an experiencer. There is awareness in deep sleep. That awareness is not an experience, it is no less than you. I wouldn’t suggest second guessing this particular master!

That is why the mind is very important because it is like an interface or filter for the experience of consciousness in its dream (that is, when we are "awake" during the day), and then when we go to sleep at night, the mind turns off and only consciousness remains, because it is fully awake… Mr. Spira, you’re an awesome teacher!!!, because you don’t give the answers easily, you make us inquire until we find out the answers ( realize how simple the truth is ) thanks SO MUCH for that.

Everything happens within consciousness......There's nothing to know or understand...... Whatever question is being asked, ask yourself who is asking the question?.....In consciousness or awarenes you won't find a person.....You won't find an "I"!......It can't be defined with words, but that what is experiencing is definitely here!.....It's what is experiencing everything......It's so obvious when found!...... All Rupert can do is point, and with his amazing ability and articulation, it can resonate with a knowing within.......It's a realisation and a knowing, and once realised, life will never be the same.....Searching will stop......Just be that which can't be explained.....There is a peace and a flow when realised! 😊.....No more attachment to any mind constructs or thoughts! 😊......You've awakened to ultimate truth of beingness, which is a mystery......It's timeless, and before everything...... It's always been here, and always will be......It's a constant presence, and it's always here and now!.....Just be that. 😊

@Eric Wolfs //The waking state is more real, no matter what Rupert says. You can not get killed in a dream. In the waking state you can. We have to eat, drink and go to the toilet etc... // How severe the consequences of desicions are within a state is not a measure of how real a state is. //In deep sleep, your consiousness is turned off. Other people can still see your body. The only thing that is not present is the consiousness of the sleeping person. Rupert turns everything up side down despite the fact that our experience says otherwise.// The problem here is that you are assuming that there is an external world, within which an absoulte time exists, within which consciousness arises and dies. Experience doesn't say that, it's the materialistic paradigm, with which you interpret your experience. //So it's a matter of believe and not a higher truth or something like that.// Quite the opposite. Thought systems are a matter of believe, only what you become directly aware of is undeniable.
@fidrewe99
@fidrewe99 4 жыл бұрын
@Eric Wolfs no, you are presuming that the awareness arises in the body, i.e. that bodies exist outside of awareness. According to your experience, the sleeping bodies of others that you see are not part of an external world, but part of your consciousness. Part of your consciousness, not theirs.

@Eric Wolfs As soon as the man hits the wall, it comes into being. This is by the way what quantum physics tells us. In fact, physics only tells us, how things behave, not what their substance is. The existence of a wall independent from consciousness is something that you can never prove, because in order to tell, if there is a wall, you need consciousness. All attempts to imagine a wall outside of consciousness are doomed to fail, because everything you could ever know is made out of consciousness. Images are made of consciousness, thoughts are made of consciousness, the sense of touch is made of consciousness.

When we experience the "I am" feeling realization of consciousness it is from the point of view of ego and objects - we observe the doorway of infinity shining into the world of ego and objects. But in deep sleep we walk completely through that doorway which is beyond the ability of the ego to comprehend and remember as we don't experience consciousness shining through objects but pure consciousness alone.

thank you very much thomas. i have been struggling with this for the last 24 hours. i was trying to figure this out, howcome we are aware of "i am" in the wake and dream state (lucid dreaming, astral projection), and like mentioned in this video....between thoughts we are aware of awareness. but we are not aware of awareness in deep sleep. it was very confusing because rupert said in other videos...conciousness needs mind to experience the world, but conciousness doesnt need mind to experience itself. understood...but why arent we aware of being aware in deep sleep when there is no body-mind and our nature is to be conciousness but no experience of itself in deep sleep? then i ask...who is there to be aware of there being no experience of itself?

A different approach might satisfy the minds: In the deep sleep the mind - which Rupert refers to as thought - is totally at rest. Meaning, also the faculty of memory is out of office, so to speak. Meaning, we don´t remember being aware during deep sleep. But, in the lab, in sleep&dream research, when people are woken up straight from deep sleep, they report having just had some abstract content of consciousness e.g. could be anything, that lets you know "I am". Because the last 8 seconds of our lives doesn´t require memory, but it has the freshness of now, this report is only possible being awakened from deep sleep. Normally, we wake up from dream sleep. So, there´s awareness, but we don´t usually remember it.

It seems to me that in deep sleep we experience a deeper level of consciousness beyond the experience of consciousness that appears from the primary point of view of ego and the world of objects. Consciousness as the feeling "I am" shines through as the subtlest of objects from the point of view of ego and objects but in deep sleep we experience a consciousness alone which is beyond even the "I am" feeling realization which in fact is the subtlest of objects. The ego has no ability to remember the completely objectless purer form of consciousness that we experience in deep sleep.
@reggaemow

I would say that the conscious and subconscious mind shuts of in the deep sleep state. As it's the minds job to create the illusion of ego, then there's no ego at all entering the state of deep sleep. The mind is now total empty and blank (in other words gone) and awareness is only awareness, awareness does not experience itself through this particular mind any more. And suddenly, the subconscious mind turns on - and there we have awareness (true I) experiencing itself through a dream. And then again, deep sleep. And suddenly the conscious mind turns on, and awareness experiencing itself through the waking mind. Now, our job is to get our mind quiet enough so it goes into a absolut blank and empty state but doing so conscious and awake. What will happen then? I don't know. Maybe there will be an experience of the self so subtle and transparent that it realises the truth of no-self.

I recently had an insight into deep sleep that is both very simple and profound. What becomes aware beyond objects of experience in deep sleep and the waking state is the same absolute awareness or identity. If one can experience this absolute awareness in deep sleep when the body/ego is unaware and there is no apparent physical world this awareness is clearly not tied to the body or the apparent physical world... This simple fact is a way one can prove to oneself that identity is primarily beyond the body, space, time and matter...

Even in deep, dreamless sleep the mind (though "unconscious" in its shallow sense) continues to operate. Which is why a loud noise can awaken it. And why it can awaken itself a few seconds before the alarm clock rings. So the illusion of human perception that Awareness projects continues even as we sleep.

What is deep sleep? If anyone can define " deep sleep" then that person has experienced it. It is only by experience that anyone can truly know. For consciousness to experience deep sleep, it has to become deep sleep. For consciousness to experience unconsciousness, it has to became unconscious. If God wants to experience being a man, he has to become a man. What we call unconscious is an experience of Consciouness. Deep sleep is a nature of consciousness. Consciousness has the power to become unconscious and it has the power to become consciouss . Consciousness and unconciousness is the nature of the same "self ". In the bible, Jesus said, " I have the power to laid down my life and I have the power to take it again - John 10 vrs 18

I don't agree Rupert: the gaps between thoughts are pure consciousness but at the same time they occur in the waking state. In meditation there are moments in which I don't think but I know inside me to exist and I can remember the gaps between thoughts. In deep sleep I have no memory, I don't exist. So how should it be the absence of awareness? The deep sleep is the perfect representation of absence of it! How can this awareness decide to live this illusion if it can't think? Tolle says that deep sleep is a portal to the Source and that normally we are UNCONSCIOUS (not aware) in it during the sleep, but if we become fully conscious in that state, there is the Illumination/samadhi which you REMEMBER after (for example you feel blissful, at home)
@freddystaelens
@freddystaelens 5 жыл бұрын
Jenny.V dear Jenny, is there a video on the net where i can watch this statement from Tolle? Because as with anything on the subject, it is important to see the context in witch it is presented. Like the concept of being aware in deep sleep seems to contradict the verry definition of it. Everybody shall agree on the fact that there must be at least allertness, otherwise how to wake somebody out of deep sleep. Lukily i would say if there is fire.
@lauranatura1340

I think that we should make the distinction between consciousness and Awareness, at least in the forest stage of understanding, so we don't be confused by language.. In fact, Nisargadatta used to make it. Consciousness is the light of Awareness finding and object and making it knowable. It's why we are conscious or aware of objects in the walking state and deep sleep. Awareness is the Source of that light of knowing or consciousness. Consciousness is Awareness+objects. Awareness in Manifestation, the Manifested. Awareness is pure Knowing, without objects. The Unmanifested. It is the space of pure sensitivity or Knowing that includes the conscious, subconscious and unconcious. Consciousness cannot be without Awareness, but Awareness can be without consciousness. This is why in deep sleep, even when we are not conscious, we are Aware of absence. They are the same, but Consciousness is the modulation of Pure Awareness in and through form. That why they say that Awareness is the same as God, or the Absolute.

The infinite(deep sleep) can not be known by direct observation by the finite(I am). From the finite point of view one only observe WHAT IS NOT INFINITE***. But in the same time, one can have a glimpsе for the unlimitless. Like a feeling what is beyond the limited horizon of (I am) of objects,feelings and perceptions. Why finite can know the infinite. Because the consciousness wich perceving both states (deep sleep an I am) is the same one. *** From here is famous advaita tehnique "neti neti" -Iam not the body ,I am not the mind, etc. Why we don't remember in deep sleep . Because there doesn't have a finite objects, like thoughts and feelings. From this state one can have some perceptions which cannot describe. Therefore limited(I am) dont have capacity to organize picture of the world(deep sleep) wich is perceived. But "something" is clearly perceived. Don Juan is asked so many times by Castaneda to describe what He seeis in nagual . And every time Don Juan tell Him that cannot describe what He sees. But can function and live there like in a normal state.

Rupert is 99% correct. But to become God Realized (having infinite Power , Knowledge, and Bliss at your disposal continuous without a break) there is a state of super consciousness which includes being wide awake in deep sleep. Very very few out of the billions of souls are God Realized. The Ones that gain public recognition of God Realization were Avatars including but not limited to Zoroaster , Buddha, Krishna. Jesus the Christ, Mohammad, and the most recent Avataric advent Meher Baba. Yes, this is my opinion only as I have not experienced the Subtle ( pran , energy first 3 planes of conscious awareness ( according to Meher Baba) not the 4th plane ( Christians consider the Dark Night Of The Soul) and not the 5th thru 7th planes of the Mental Sphere). Rupert is correct in stating there is and never was a dis-continuity of infinite awareness but it is my belief that Rupert ( along with 99.99999999% of humanity including myself ) has not experienced being awake in deep sleep whereupon you never sleep in the conventional sense. This is where I differ with Rupert. I believe that when you are truly awake in deep sleep you will know Bliss ( not happiness), Knowledge ( have infinite Knowledge with the ability to use it) and Power ( with the ability to wield it for the betterment of us souls in the gross world or sphere) Al

If the waking state is thought and perception, how would we classify or characterize meditative awareness? One who is in meditation can be briefly without thought and be without perception, I think. Or are we classifying such a state as a dream state?

Presumably the experience of awareness itself is the sense that the "I" that goes to sleep is the same "I" that wakes up i.e. there is a continuity as opposed to the I that went to sleep being a different I that wales up?

The experience of deep sleep is the experience of the non-dual. There is no thing to compare any thing to. Thus there is an impression of unconsciousness. ONE has no OTHER that it can be aware of. There are no subject object relationships in deep sleep, only pure subjectivity.

The ego is only a symbol, an idea. It doesn't directly exist in reality, it only does through identification with thought and feeling which this identification itself is just another thought and feeling. In other words, the ego doesnt exist apart or separate from thoughts and feelings, which makes it an illusion as an idea or symbol.

Therefore his explanation about deep sleep from the point of view of his body mind cannot be completely true. In his mind he thinks that in deep sleep consciousness is pure. When Rupert is in deep sleep his mind is not present. How can his mind come back later and truthfully explain deep sleep. Everything he says about deep sleep is a believe of his own body mind.

No not yet. I had not started practising meditation when I was into lucid dreaming. But at the time I had about 1-2 lucid dreams a month. The funny thing in a lucid dream is that everything feels as real as in the waking state, but the only difference is that you know everything is happening inside the mind. So if I have a lucid dream again I will definitely try to meditate/do self inquiry.
@mooog1

I had a series of consecutive lucid dreams, the surprising observation is when the dream ended I maintained awareness to witness the space between each dream, a dimension less void of nothing in which firstly geometric shapes then followed by incomprehensible symbols that faded back from which the next dream emerged, any thoughts anyone? Incidentally for any lucid explorers, I found an easy way of exiting a dream to then enter the void, firstly, within the dream find a wall and place your back to it, turn around 180 ° while intending to pass through it.

This happened once when I was so tired of the world that I didn't even want to enjoy my spontaneous lucid dream. I let myself fall through the ground which was just a thin plane. There was infinite black void and I began meditating while I kept falling. An image of a white point in the center appeared and stayed until I woke up hours later. Time didn't pass during this state but I have a memory of being unconsciously aware the whole night. = I didn't have an "I am" feeling nor a feeling for time, but in my memory it looks like the state lasted the whole night and that there were no gaps in awareness. Fascinating... Afterwards, I read on a german lucid dreaming wiki that this aware state during sleep is called "Klarlicht Traum" which means "clear-light dream".

That's the states of consciousness that I've expierenced 💙🙏

I love Rupert’s teaching but there is one thing I don’t get (apart from this deep sleep issue which is still a bit confusing). I realise that all experience of matter including the science within it, is only experienced from within awareness itself but the science within this awareness has, from what I understand, pretty good evidence that the universe, solar system, galaxies etc. has been around for billions of years before man came into being on this earth. Why would this world of matter create a story where man wasn’t in it for billions of years? And thus man wasn’t around to experience it/be aware of it. Could it be that we are so invested in the world of matter that we have created this story that proves that Matter comes before awareness? It is all very confusing.

No one can say that there hasn’t been an intelligent species in the universe before us that was experiencing it. And before them, I think those billions of years passed instantly, the same way 8 hours seem to pass instantly when we’re in deep sleep. There was no experience of enduring those 8 hours, and there was no experience of enduring those billions of years. There is only the experience of Nowness that emerges within consciousness from beings that can process information.

Dissolving the ego will result in a joyful and peaceful life for everyone, not just yourself. And besides that, could there be anything more interesting than finding out who you are? Really finding out who you are, beneath the identity. The one who is wondering why it is necessary to find out is the false 'i', which has no real existence on its own. Who wants to live a lie, when you can live the truth in which there is no suffering, at all.

Crow T. Robot In those examples, what good is the storifying mind? What good are constantly repeating thoughts like 'this shouldn't have happened to me', when it already happened? Or 'i am the body' when the body has been severely injured. Of course, no one would want those things you describe, but that is not my point, at all. Think of an animal that gets injured by a predator type animal. The injured animal has no story about its injury. It tried everything to prevent being injured, yet when it got injured it totally accepted it. When there is no identification with the body and/or thought, there can be an underlying peace, even when something happens to the body or the life situation. Ignorance is not truly bliss. To be able to say that is to be truly ignorant. True bliss can only be there when there is no ignorance (ignoring of the true nature) at all. You are very condescending, yet you have no idea what you're talking about. Find out who you truly are. That is the one thing that matters.

But the problem is precisely this: there IS no consciousness or awareness associated with the state called deep sleep. One can hardly say of a state for which no consciousness exists that it is "pure consciousness." Such a statement doesn't even make coherent sense. It's like calling the inability to see anything in a pitch black room "pure eyesight." I'd like to emphasize I do like Rupert's thinking and way of expressing himself on many things, but I don't think he's correct here. If some kind of ultimate self-demonstrating mystical state of consciousness without objects "exists" then that is not what we experience as deep sleep via the body.

Very clumsy answer to be honest. One of the topics that I find Rupert really struggled to answer well and the answer remained very unsatisfying overall. He plays with words and puts very clumsy comparisons out there. But taking it at face value, let us all be honest here: if it is pure awareness and the dissapearance of "I" in deep sleep and death is likened to deep sleep, then death will resemble annihilation.
@RGV_9

I understand your point but I don't think that's quite the case. First of all, you're assuming death is permanent and consciousness won't assume another vehicle, in which case the death process would simply resemble another waking up into another body. And second, although subtle there seems to be a difference between complete annihilation in other words "no I" and content-less pure self-aware existence, otherwise bliss or "I-I" as Ramana Maharshi put it.
