honestly those movies are amazing about handling this since Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman went all out on this (and it doesn't feel like anyone else got exploited (although I don't think Seth Rogan was STUPIDLY Popular when the first one came out) (Heck I don't think anyone not named Jack Black/Angleina Jolie showed up for pre release stuff for any of them other than maybe Brian Cranston for the third one (AND EVEN THEN If I didn't know he was in that going in I probably wouldn't have recognized him until the Credits hit ))

this is why i love japan's voice acting situation, the voice actors themselves are treated as celebrities because of the roles they have taken in, you don't see movie actors taking voice acting roles or voice actors take on movie acting roles, they're both respected equally for their prowess at their field
@Applebomb8D
@Applebomb8D 2 жыл бұрын
In japan voice actors have taken movie/commercial acting roles. But that's mostly because their career spans more into the "idol" industry where they happen to voice act as well.
@TheMindofagenius1
@TheMindofagenius1 2 жыл бұрын
That's what I also said, voice actors in Japan are the main attraction of any animation work, and if you get around watching just enough, you'll easily be able to recognize their voices, maybe most people don't memorize their actual names but will definitely recognize the character they played once!
@TheMindofagenius1
@TheMindofagenius1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Applebomb8D I don't think that's entirely true, voice actors and idols are two entirely different entities, voice actors in general are required to be able to sing and "dance" to an extent, and have a certain stage presence, sure, but they have more "free will" in their personal lives I feel like, unlike idols, where they're literally treated almost as if they're just beautiful robots that belong to, and are property of the creeps (men AND women) who lowkey highkey worship them.... Sure a similar treatment *HAS* seeped into the voice acting fans scene, but it's not nearly as promenant as the idol fans scene. Just look at how idols are treated and perceived when they're "caught out with someone" vs a voice actor who announced their marriage.... It's almost as if for the most part, VA fans don't give a shit about their favorite VA's personal life, they can do whatever the frick they want as long as it doesn't hinder their work output or something, that's why the most frequent statement in these marriage announcements is a "I will continue my work as usual, thank you for the continuous support" or some sort.... This turned into a longer reply than intended but ah well, sorry for bothering ^^;

Voicing a character for decades with little replacements is a huge deal, considering not everyone here in the U.S. gets to do the voice for less than a decade because of their voice acting studio is not the same place and would have to move out of their homes in California and go to New York. Everyone in Japan knows Goku's voice, everyone on the planet knows Mario's voice. No celebrity would make the character better just because his or her career is booming. They get replaced anyway for cartoons and games so why the hell were they casted? Stallone was in the Ratchet and Clank movie as this big security bot then gets replaced in the videogame. I love the guy but it such a waste of money to voice him for the movie.
@dogetheswaggy3830
@dogetheswaggy3830 2 жыл бұрын
I think they treat voice acting as an actual sort of acting than they do in the U.S. For example, if you look up "voice acting schools in" either America or Japan, America gives filmmaking results not voice acting results. Meanwhile, if you search for Japan, you get a school in Tokyo that focus *only* in voice acting. Basically, Japan treats it as an actual art of acting while the U.S. doesn't (which might explain why so many anime English dubs are so bad...)

VA isn't about doing voices, it's about acting with your voice. You need to know basic acting skills but most celebs are too stuck on camera work and don't take VA seriously enough hence the poorer performance. Also some celebs are too known for their voice (Patrick Warburton for one) and don't really have as much range as people with normal voices.

People need to recognize that voice acting is acting, and it’s hard work. It’s not just doing a funny voice or a sub-par impression; it’s being able to maintain that voice/impression through several takes, through various emotions and scenarios, and still be able to embody a character. Even if you have a distinctive voice, distinct voices still have to have versatility. The relationship that anime fans have to voice actors is very apparent with this. Anime fans can name/recognize their favorite voice actors within seconds, but they can also be terribly critical when an English dub gets announced and the characters “don’t sound right”. I think that’s one of the reasons why the sub/dub discourse is so strong, because to anime fans, a character is more “authentic” in a certain language.

What do they think? That a now-43-year-old man is still doing the same voice he did at age 10, having been fed puberty blocking hormones or becoming a castrato in order to continue voicing him? I can’t believe Charles Martinet got snubbed for Chris Pratt in the new Mario Bros. movie. Who’s boneheaded decision was that? It’s like they took some of the most popular actors at the moment and said, “yeah that’ll do.” The guys been voicing Mario for 25 years now, you would think that’d be a no-brainer. Also Keegan-Michael Key as Toad?! I hope he just talks like himself.

I'm reminded of what I heard Zach Aguilar (the voice of Male Byleth in Fire Emblem/Smash Bros, Male Traveler/Aether in Genshin Impact, and Koichi in JoJo Part 4 and others) said about VA work on one of his signing streams. The Japanese industry has TONS of respect for voice actors, wherein they're brought to several events for the games, movies, and anime that they voice for. Namely though, he said that voice actors are usually in the same room as they voice lines for characters in a scene. For dubs and even some video game voice over however, a lot of times a director has to bring in one actor at a time to dub over ALL of a character's lines for an episode, or even for just one scene. This is why some anime dubs, despite being performed well, can feel as though the characters aren't listening to each other in a conversation. There's also what I recall Morgan Berry's (voice actress of Thirteen from My Hero Academia, Altena from Fire Emblem, and Rindo from Food Wars) recent appearance at a con where she also said that VA work is inconsistent and you would be doing that work, not for money or fame, but for the love of the art of voice acting. It's a wonderful art, but it isn't very appreciated in the public eye, not as much as on-screen actors are.

VAing in american animation is weird to look at as someone who really likes seiyuu in anime-- the voice cast is actually a pretty BIG motivator for me to watch an anime! As far as I can tell, seiyuu seem to have a semi-"celebrity"/idol status in japan (prominently amongst anime circles) and it feels like a far cry from how we treat VAs here in the states. Is Saori Hayami voicing the main girl in Kakegurui a selling point of the show? Well... I'd argue yes, but I love Hayamin 😫 how similar would you consider seiyuu to be to "celebrity voice actors"?
@dogeatdog3579

i talked to another commenter about something similar actually!! i think it really boils down to the fact that animation completely dominates japanese society EXPONENTIALLY more than it does really anywhere else--meaning; voice actors would be put on similar pedestals to actual movie/tv stars. popular seiyuus (like hayamin) are celebrity voice actors for sure, but they're celebrities BECAUSE they're voice actors, as opposed to my definition of celebrity voice actors in the context of this video: people who voice act BECAUSE they're celebrities!

I really liked how DreamWorks used to do it. Even if they had a star-studded voice cast, each one of those celebrities performed very well and brought something to the character. I especially liked it when you couldn't even tell who they were until after you check the credits. Nowadays, they'll just cast whoever just because they happened to be a popular actor that year. Edit: Also, I think the reason why American dubs for anime is so bad is because a lot of the time, those VAs are monolinguals. When you know more than one language, you know that your voice changes whenever you speak a different language. How you sound in one language is gonna be different from how you sound in another. These American VAs try so hard to replicate Japanese voices but they should just try to voice characters in a way that's appropriate for the character.

Like Frank Welker has been voicing Fred since the series was started but was passed over for Zac Efron, which even though he was able to voice Scooby another very iconic role is so terrible. It really did hurt to see that and even though I believe that the movie had a lot of good Easter eggs in the plot and visuals the fact that they disrespected such an integral part to the series just made me feel so angry. Voice actor's honestly deserve so much more recognition and the fact that they're seen as so disposable sucks so much. Traditional celebrities and actors get enough time in the spotlight with them showing their face with just about every role they get, but voice actors never get this type of recognition unless it's within animation fanbases.

I argue that DreamWorks is when the animation industry really pushed star-power. I think it works in some movies - Shrek has an All-Star cast, and I think sometimes the VA is used as part of a joke. Bee Movie is Seinfeld's stupid movie, so Seinfeld being the bee is fine. When I think of this, I also think of Scoob!, Which kicked off lots of it's main cast to make way for celebrities.

Latin america is a weird case becasuse every movie needs voice actors to be in spanish. And thats why we have so many great ones (Blas Garcia being my favourite). The sad thing is that the "celebrification" has already started in here as well, but it is only for animated movies, like when Netflix hired Yatra to do the voice of Jesper in Klaus (which sound horrible imo) because they hoped that would make the latin crowd more interested in the movie. But that is just another sign of how underapreciated animation is, because i am sure they would never hire the celebrity of the moment to voice the main the role of an Scorsese movie.

My one issue with latin dub is that they use the same VAs for everything over and over again. I wouldn't mind hearing unknown voices in many series but it can be annoying to find out that the same dude who voiced an important character in X episode of X series is also voicing four different dudes in Y episode of the same X series. despite that, I love latin dub, the passion it has is unique just the way both japanese and english dubs have their own charm.

True, but in the case of Japan voice acting is a serious job (with dark undertones lurking beneath once you dig deep enough) and it is a requirement for Japanese VAs to have as wide of a vocal range as possible to make the characters they voice distinguishable from each other. As such, most Japanese VAs don't fall into, say, Seth Rogan voice acting. Each and every character they voice has a unique voice, and in the (alarmingly but gradually increasing, yet still bearable) cases that they're not, a unique quirk or personality that separates the character to the voice actor. Famous VAs, for example Rie Takahashi, are deemed famous for having these distinguishable voices (in her case, like Re:Zero's Emilia's soft but confident tone compared to her KonoSuba's Megumin's aggressive reckless tone).

In any story ever, the character should ALWAYS come first. The character should be believable, match the setting, match the aesthetic, and have chemistry with other characters. The character idea should be entirely fleshed out before a voice is ever considered. In many cases, celebrity voice casting has been phenomenal because the voice embodies the character, regardless of the actor's status. The most important name attached to an animated film should be that of the characters, not their actors. I'm not against celebrities voicing animated characters, many of my favorite performances involve actors who don't specialize in voice work. I'm against casting for the sake of name recognition.
