True.. there was no notice, and I was on my way out when the chipdrop guy pulled up and said, "where do you want it?" It bothered me at first but I'm a procrastinator and now I have a massive pile of ficus tree mulch. I was forced to deal with it because it smelled like decomposing greens and it started to steam. I was forced to deal with it and as a result, my project is almost done. In the end, I'm actually really happy with chipdrop and welcome the inconvenience. lol.

I've had 2 drops in the past month. The first batch was pristine pine and maple wood chips that smelled amazing. The second drop was lots of branches and other detritus but I have an area that is very eroded so I am 'chipping' away at filling that area with 5-6 layer. I am very pleased with ChipDrop. I even ordered a hat. It does seem to make the delivery faster if you tip.

Had our first drop today! Very happy with it. We've seen our soil become happy with using wood chips (you can see the mycorrhizal fungi start its work (deep underneath the chips) within a few months or less, which is exactly what we want to help our soil heal). We have had 6 drops since 2018 and just requested another. Bring it on! You can't get enough woodchips when you're a permaculture junkie! A lot of people make the mistake of not using a thick enough layer. They break down quickly, so 12 inches becomes 3 inches in no time. That's how you destroy a 20 yard pile!

But is it safe to mulch around trees, plants, flowers with fresh wood chips? I got a drop two days ago and we put that sh everywhere since there was SO MUCH!! But I just read it will steal nitrogen from plants until it breaks down, which can take months or longer.

@@thefitzs I wouldn't worry too much about it, but it's always a good idea to add compost before your woochip layer for plants with shallow roots. Just be sure not too mulch over the root ball to ensure your plants and trees don't suffocate. If you skipped the compost step, they may not perform as well this year, but will recover and do better the years to come. Once you have a nice broken down layer, you can pile on more each year without worry. Again, be sure not to pile too thick around the base of your plants/trees.

I use Chipdrop all the time, with a few different arborists picking up the ticket each year. I've never had a problem, and by putting in a request for a phone call before delivery call, and detailed directions on where to drop, it's been a very helpful service. I don't fault the Chipdrop concept, but the individual companies in your area... bit of a tip also helps keep them honest too... ;)

While I did sign up, I was able to flag down an arborist from the street and they dumped two loads two weeks apart, so I ended up not having to order through Chipdrop. I would not even have tried this had I not seen these videos to help me understand what I was getting in to. But my neighbors have noticed how much the appearance of my yard has improved, and they want to sign up as well. Once I get the 25 cu yd or so of delivered woodchips & ct. spread through my yard/lot, I might ask for a third load--there are a lot of places where a nice layer of wood chip mulch will help suppress weeds and keep the plantings looking fresh and neat. The chips are easy to move with a wheelbarrow, and I can get 15-20 wheelbarrows moved before I need to take a break. Interesting point today: We had some rain recently and the latest drop was kinda wet already. As I was shoveling some into the wheelbarrow, I noticed that the pile was steaming. The decomposition is starting already!

@@getchipdrop Indeed. It's 4-8" deep, depending upon where I have it. In the "deep" beds (the mature trees and native plantings in the undisturbed part of the yard) It's about 4-6". Around the house it's deeper because the house is elevated about 2' above grade, and it's got room. Plus it smothers the weeds and unifies the entire yard with the same "look."

I saw this on Instagram and decided to check it out. Would love to do this but I can't specify how much. It would take me too long to use it all. But it's a really great idea. One benefit from having too much is you can let it rot and you will get some good soil/compost! I normally get chips from the parks dept where I live and it's free as well. With them, I can have a bit more to say in how much. My backyard (which is a big) has benefitted greatly.

This is a great service, but please note that they only have arborists in major metro areas. If you live outside a major metro area, you could call the arborists in your area. I just started calling around, and the largest arborist just told me he'd drop some chips off at our property.

We have gotten about 8 loads over the past 2 years and they are always excellent. The drivers are great. The quality is excellent! I want the pine needles and leaves mixed in to add nutrients as it breaks down. It is true that even the "small loads" can be onerous if you live on a 1/4 acre lot (we don't) Like they suggested in the video, the neighborhood can all split a load if you have a driveway or spot for it to be dumped where everyone can get to it. Like @GoGreenCompost said, we have mulched our shrubs and trees, repaired erosion, created a really nice compost pile and greatly improved our garden soil (which was solid red clay).

I had a drop a few weeks ago and for the most part I am happy with it. It looked like I got two separate dumps. The first pile was real nice fine stuff, great for my composting but the second pile was not dumped as just a pile, it was a long row dump and their chipper needed to be sharpened real bad. That part was no good for my composting, it was all real big chips and not really chips, it was mostly shredded in long pieces, long sticks and chunks. I am loading my Johnson Su Bioreactors with the fine stuff but all I can use the rest for is to cover walkways and such and it's nasty looking enough that the walkways will not look very good. If all I got was the not so nice second part of the load I don't think I would order anymore chip drops. I have an older craftsman wood chipper shredder I was thinking of putting some of the nasty stuff through but I don't think it will do any better and would take forever. In my opinion if arborists are going to be part of the chip drop program they need to keep their chippers sharp so that the home owners and businesses can use all of the product that is dropped. I realize that they warn you about what you will get but I think some arborists need to keep their equipment in better condition. I did get notification in my e-mail not long before they delivered it and another saying it was delivered not long after it was. I was not expecting that.

We do hold the arborists up to some level of quality in regards to the wood chips and how fine they should be chipped. Long, stringy chips is usually a sign of a poorly adjusted chipper that needs service. That said, one person's definition of long-stringy is usually different from another's, so we like to see some pictures of the material just to verify what we're talking about.

I got my second chipdrop recently. They sent me an email stating, "within 48 hours, you'll receive your chipdrop." It was less than 12 hours later I received my 3 year supply of free wood chips. Lol. I'm hoping my neighbors will ask if they can have some. I really don't need this much, but that's a risk I am totally willing to take. Only waited a few weeks both times. If you haven't done it yet, take the risk, cause it's worth it.

It’s not always like that. Remember context. I deliver hundreds of loads of chips annually and people ask for more. We don’t have the luxury of dropping partial amounts because we have to get back to the job and we can’t close the tailgate and if we could the load is off balance. Chip Dump has helped tons of people and tree companies alike.

I wish! I moved to the Arizona desert and there aren't many tree services out here, I guess because there aren't as many trees. Apparently there are no tree services who have signed up at Chip Drop, so it's not an option here. :( I contacted one tree service and asked about getting chips, and they said they charge $100 for a load. And a friend I spoke with said he asked a tree company about chips, and they said they charge $300 for a load of chips! When I lived in NW WA, I used to be able to get free wood chips just about any time I wanted them. Oh well..

I just signed up. Luckily we have a ton of room in our yard. Last year the power company was cutting trees down our street and we got like 20 huge trucks of woodchips and were kinda sad when they stopped coming.

I'm quite disappointed that ChipDrop isn't working for me. I've had requests out for the last 18 month. Appealing to anyone and everyone for a 'drop' but not a single chip has come. I was offering up to $200 bucks at one point (20 is the recommended amount). When I reached out I was told that I was in one of their busiest areas (Western WA) and that everything with my profile and request looked good. Quite disappointed, as I could use around 200 yards (1 acre, Back to Eden-ish) and am willing to pay for it.

When calling arborist, I found it very difficult to get chips dropped. The first time it worked the second just a bunch of we will put you on the list and never heard back. With chip drop it went very well.I had a couple of them call me before they wanted to make delivery. Yes their was the occasional wrapper in their . The key is to leave a tip and tell them to have the driver call before delivery.

Those are good options if you only want a small amount. If you want a lot delivered right to your door, ChipDrop is the jam.

Misleading video, my "mulch" drop from FJR TREE INC consisted of about 30% destroyed plywood and construction wood debris. It was hell to clean it up, I regret my decision to trust ChipDrop. I provided pictures to Kat from ChipDrop, but no response, not even a ticket number, honestly I don't think you care. Nice damage control video though. I'll probably make one too with the mountain of plywood debris that sits in my backyard.

We reply to all emails within 48 hours, sometimes a bit longer. But we should have gotten back to you. Please send another email with pictures of the load you received and we'll take it from there. You shouldn't receive any construction debris in your ChipDrop deliveries.
