I'm Dutch and I really recognise his way of answering the questions, it's very common in Dutch/German/Scandanavian interviews and to me personally it feels more natural than the American way. I think this down-to-earth demeanor helps us get less starstruck with them, because they come across more normal.

@freddy10001fa7 жыл бұрын
I`m german too and i also immediately recognised his kind of Dutch/German/Scandinavian answering. The difference between hollywoodactors and german actors is that US-staractors entertain more and they are more emotional whilst german actors explain more in interviews and they are more rational, which creates some kind of cold impression to Americans. German/Austrian actors feel also more as professional artists due to the long tradition of acting at theatres like the "Wiener Burgtheater". It would always be a greater honour for a german actor, who calls himself professional actor (in german "Berufsschauspieler") with a degree in acting studies, to act the protagonist at a reputable theatre than to act the starring role in a big cinema production. However the latter is better paid.

+myfaithfulvengance There was one moment where she should take just taken a bit of time to think about a deeper reply, but unfortunately she raced on with her next question instead because she thought she might not be quite able to understand what Mr. Waltz means. Ive watched a lot of interviews of his and you did well. Mr. Waltz is a deep thinker and you allowed for that. "Getting anger out is not liberation...to let go of the anger is liberation" You recognize a good interviewer by the answers he is provoking. But that's Waltz's catholic background anyway: sacrifice your feelings in order to free yourself from them. In Austria you are responsible for your anger, not others who might have provoked you.
@leporello75 жыл бұрын
Very interesting and enlightening! I have never thought about this point, your last sentence really highlights a big difference between austrian and german/bavarian everyday culture, which otherwise have some similarities. To germans the austrian way of coolness/"non-reactiveness" sometimes seems inexplicably strange and (sorry for the word) a bit creepy. So we often imagine Austrians to be up to something. Perhaps this is why playing the bad guy comes naturally to Christoph Waltz?

Great Interview, Waltz is by far my favorite actor, but what makea this interview special is the women interviewing him. For my own disgrace I have to say i do not like interviewers because in my eyes most of them just do it for money or show off. But the lady here seems like she really ist interested in his answers and does not interrupt him or somehow. this is such a important skill to just listen to other people and learn instead of putting your own interests above. thank you really much for this experience 🙏 (I do apologize for any grammer or text error in my comment english is not my mothertongue, but it is my favorit language, and i try to use no shortcuts because it is such a beautyfull language so please correct every error i made so I learn)

It seems to me that he finds a way to rarely talk about himself or his process, just like how he said elsewhere that he can't or doesn't talk about his characters. He seems to always take a question to him and externalise it, and then to comment on at least some other way of looking at it. It can even seem oppositional, because he rarely simply agrees with a question or statement. Everything is more complicated than any possible question about it might imply, and his answers tend to comment on that; he almost has a philosopher's way of thinking. But there's the sense, I find, of never quite knowing what makes Waltz tick. He's elusive. Maybe that's his talent as an actor; he keeps himself a mystery.

The movie Big Eyes is extremely special to me. It was one of the few hollywood movies I was allowed to watch, being raised as a Jehovah's Witness. The movie is about a painter who became a Jehovah's Witness during the film so that's why. My grandfather actually knew the women who the movie is based off of personally, and has about 15 of her original paintings. For anyone who doesnt know, the Jehovah's Witness are a terrible organization, boarding on being a cult. Nevertheless the movie is great meditation on fame, artistry, faith, and envy. Being disfellowshipped from the organization for about 5 years now, I still connect with the women in the film, dispite my personal trauma with the JWs. And that's incredibly powerful. A testament to how well Christoff played such a villainous role, he made ME actually ROOT for the Jehovah's Witness. Great film

German's think Americans are sugar coated babies(not completely wrong)whereas Americans think Germans are blunt dickheads(not completely wrong) It's just how we were raised as a country, and how things are today. We just have different ways of doing things, and that's not a bad thing. I'm an American btw, so don't think I'm spewing propaganda. America has it's problems, and being fake is one of them.
