That brings up a point that I'm surprised nobody has ever mentioned. Has anyone noticed that every single first person shooter ever seems to reuse the same "hanging from a ledge" animation? What always happens is: 1. The slide down whatever collapsing structure they're on 2. Grab a hold of the ledge right at the edge with one hand 3 (the most obvious one). Look down to see their dangling feet and other hand as debris falls around them 4. They are either pulled back up by an ally or climb back up themselves.

If anyone is confused. Odst's drop sequences was fine.. why? It had a skip button Reach's first person cutscenes were fine.. why? They had a skip button As long as these "cinematic" sequences have skip buttons then all is forgiven... I don't want to watch Locke jump down a cliff and assassinate an elite only to be "surprised" by an explosion every single time I replay the level. If it's skippable, it's good

I was okay with the elevator sequence in Halo 4 since of that game's problems, it's relatively minor. However, there's still no reason it couldn't have been done through gameplay. Being a tutorial mission, why couldn't it make you leap from platform to platform in-order to teach the player to jump? Why not have the elite charge at you when you reach the top, instructing how to fire the Assault Rifle. There's multiple things they could've done, but they choose the option that only works on a superficial level, once. Really enjoyed this video. Articulated professionally and critically.

Skorge's boss "fight" was terrible in 2 though because it was 100% QTE, except for occasionally dodging Ticks. In fact I hated Gears of War 2 on release because of how every second mission was an on rails sequence broken up by unskippable cutscenes. New Hope and the Rift Worm were awesome, but that to me was because through both you always had the sticks.

I don't mind some qtes, like killing that elite in Halo 4's first level. There are many other elites to kill. But the final boss of Halo 4 was a qte which was just a joke. I remember people not liking them, which is fair, but at least those drove the story forward as apposed to this "WOW, LOCKE IS FALLING OFF A BRIDGE, LOOOOOK". Plus they ended up being pretty memorable because they, along with Gravemind's dialogue, hit a climax that really sold it at the end. Can you say the same thing about Chief or Locke crawling on the floor over and over again as if they had one too many to drink?

I liked the quick time events in COD4. Even the very last one where you kill Zakhaev. Because even though you couldn't run, you could still look around wherever you wanted, aim the gun yourself, and shoot the gun yourself. Despite the quick time events, I still think the COD4 campaign overall was really good. Quick time events is a COD thing, not a Halo thing. In Halo, it feels so cheap and out of place.

I'm fine with QTEs as long as A: They're few and far between, only being used for fights that would be less tense otherwise, I.E. hand-to-hand combat against a Spec Ops Elite that ambushes you from a dark shadow. B: They aren't used for big boss fights, except as part of a takedown. I.E. A boss you have to kill by assassination, but also with correct button presses. C: They can be disabled.
@LateNightHalo

A first person cinematic isn't the same as what you are describing. A first person cinematic is like the opening of Halo 3 ODST, where it is just an ordinary cinematic but instead of a third person view looking down on the character, you're looking through their eyes. And like all cinematics, it SHOULD be skippable. There's nothing wrong with a first person cinematic. The only problems is when you take it too far and turn gameplay itself into a first person cinematic hybrid.

I love occasionally playing through old Halo games cinematicely. You know, slowly panning your view over some scenery or faraway object that the game wants you to look at, pretending to be surprised and the like. But, there are times where I would rather (take Halo 3 for example) set myself up in the perfect spot so I can jump on the scarab immediately.

Hamlet Enthusiast THE MAW - One of the best examples of how to give the player the *option* of stopping their forward progress in order to *immerse themselves* in the story. The first time I played THE MAW, I stopped. FoeHammer was important to me and I could not believe what I was seeing. There was a moment of me wondering if I could save them... but the game was still going. So, I drove forward because no one likes blowing up. The next few times, I did all the crazy things one might do to change the game. None of it worked and eventually I began to just drive through during later playthroughs on higher difficulties. But even *that* was cinematic in its own way. I had been given the option to have this scripted moment play out in slightly different ways. The result was always the same - FoeHammer Burns - but the way I interacted with the moment was up to me. Drive through because "Chief *should* be in a hurry"? Stop because a comrade is falling? Slow down? Drive off the edge because "There's no point in life without FoeHammer"? Get out and walk because "FUCKIT"? The scene allowed *you* to direct the camera. Another good one was Halo2's "BossFights". Chief v. Regret and Arbiter v. Heretic... There were options. Some options were unfeasible depending on difficulty, but they were still there and they were in your control. ~ Play through the fight like you're probably supposed to - having a drawn out confrontation where the enemy takes actions that are specific to them and forcing you to change the way you've been doing things? or (and this is my personal favorite option but it only works on easy) ~ Rush in like a Badass on a time limit and fuckem up in a matter of seconds! When I realized I could run past all the bullshit and just have Chief wail on Regret? 😚👌 I felt clever and I also thought "Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's how John *would* do that." Sorry for the diatribe.

I think Titanfall 2 did a good job with the final level where they just gave you the most OP gear and threw you into a shitstorm of enemies saying "here, have some more fun. Courtesy of the devs. " I think if Halo 6 does something along those lines where they give the Spartans increased movement speed, jump height and even some newer super charged looking movement animations unique to the final mission it could really make *you* the player feel like the badass, it would be a step in the right direction too I'd say. Retaining Halo's reputation of player freedom and control should be one of 343's main concerns... but if they don't manage to fix the mess they're I wouldn't be surprised at all.

I see what you mean about the disk space they should have released the MCC with extra disk space for H3A, and when people question it they should have said it was for ODST then people wouldn't be suspicious . but there would have been no time for H3A to be released at the same time as H2A (unless you want it to be plagued with bugs like H2A did at launch). This is why Half-Life and the original Halo games so much. I can go in and have fun with the game and not feel restricted. I love playing games in different ways each time. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I do a playthrough of Half-Life every day. I find it a lot of fun to try something new with each playthrough. Games like CoD are just so boring to replay because they are so linear. Now that I think about it, I have been playing Halo and CoD for about 10 years, and the only time I remember replaying a CoD campaign is to get achievements. But with Halo, I never cared about achievements, because I was actually having fun. I didn't need to force myself to replay Halo.

The worst example of this is the constant need for Batman needs to stop and talk to someone on his arm screen in Arkham Knight. EDIT OPENING - I didn't see *one* "Press X to 'Jason'" in the comments. 😦? THE MAW - One of the best examples of how to give the player the *option* of stopping their forward progress in order to *immerse themselves* in the story.

I think it's about time there be a distinction between video games and interactive movies. Extremely scripture, linear and narrative focused entertainment should be called interactive movies. Entertainment that's much less linear and more player controlled should be called video games.

I'll say this: I prefer the well-animated first person cinematic "events" of Halo 4 and Halo 5 to the slowed walking speed while Cortana flashes on the screen or the Gravemind talks to you in Halo 3. I mean forget replay value, those parts were annoying on my first playthrough.

The sad thing is, nowadays most games are pitched for and built around multiplayer instead of campaign, so I doubt too many companies really care much for replayability of story mode.

I don't mind seeing them every now and then tbh. Really the only "cinematic moment" that I disliked in H4 was the Didact one because it was replacing what could have been a cool gameplay sequence/boss battle. But other stuff like just climbing an elevator shaft or pressing a button is like whatever lol (though they definitely should at least be skipable for repeat playthroughs).

basically my thoughts. After the 20th playthrough, seeing chief SLOOOOOWLY climb an elevator shaft can be VERY tedious so a "skip" option should be there

YES. FINALLY. I CRY ALOUD EVERY TIME I PLAY HALO 5s CAMPAIGN FOR ALL THE WASTED POTENTIAL! CAN THEY PLEASE JUST REMASTER THE THING? It seriously just needs to be polished and rethought. I actually played it earlier today, and just thought, hey. I know what would make this a hell of a lot better. Even if doing this fine tuning still didn't make it an amazing good game, it'd still give it replay value. I wish I could discuss with you the exact moments in the campaign that could be redone and perfected. Maybe that could be a video series you do! MAN!

I thought QTEs started even earlier than COD4, although still within the franchise. I remember WAY back in the day in one of the WWII COD games, there would be moments where you round a corner and a previously hidden German soldier pops out of nowhere and jumps on you, grabbing your rifle. You'd have to spam the two shoulder buttons over and over as you cinematically struggle for control of your rifle until you are presented with a button, simon says style, to finish him off. I remember there being quite a bit of fan backlash to these unskippable unimmersive moments, but it went on to be a staple of the series in the modern COD games anyway.

So what you're saying is. They shouldn't tell their story how they want and they they should let you tea bag in a corner. How is this a legitimate issue. Halo has a lot of issues nowadays and this is not one of them. Sorry man. I like your videos but if I wanna play for gameplay aspects I play multiplayer

@LateNightHalo 7 жыл бұрын
Cryptonic yes... yes I should be allowed to tea bag... previous halo games allowed me to do this.. You're literally advocating the REMOVAL of player freedom in a series known for campaigns with lots of player freedom... Why do I want to watch the game play itself for me? This is a game not a movie.. I didn't pay 60 dollars to watch halo 5 beat the final mission for me

LateNightGaming - Halo News & Entertainment - I'm not advocating it. I'm just saying that quick time events aren't the biggest issue. You guys (meaning halo KZbinrs) are making real changes. I just think you should use that power to really drive home the issues with the art style, sounds, character development, and gameplay imbalances. The day that our biggest issue is a fucking quick time event will be a pretty damn great day. Once again I should say. like your videos. keep up the good content

Cryptonic If the player actually wants to pay attention to the story, they'll pay attention- it doesn't do them any favours to suddenly put all the momentum to a halt and force them to listen to someone spout expostion or even more importantly go through an entire fight for you. If you're really that worried about the player not looking where you want them to, do what they did in ME3- Just put a button on screen that when pressed will automatically turn the camera to whatever they want them to look at- if the player isn't interested they can just continue on their way or just listen to the chatter- but most will press the button to see what their squad is talking about.

They took the Boss Battle, and killed it for you. They took the Last moments of the levels and stole all the hard work. Its not you finishing the levels, its the game taking control for you. Remember the days you could beat up Tartarus, or punch the prophet to death? What about the times when you could destroy a scarab with just your fists? Those were the moments I played halo for. Halo used to be a game.

Destroying a scarab is so much fun: rocket the legs? jump in the back? jump in with a mongoose or ghost? jump on it's back off a ledge? jump out of a pelican? will you snipe enemies off first? blow em up? steal the plasma gun? spike grenade around the corner? and then destroying the core: blow it up? punch it? plasma cannon? then jumping off and getting out of there in time to run away, as the music builds to a point. killing melee enemies as a they charge at you. hijacking a vehicle. lasering a wraith. The future cube as the prometheans come around the corner. plasma pistol stunning a banshee. HAlo can be very cinematic and truly epic, and do so with and indeed by the immense freedom. A short, self-induced burst of awesomness (hijacking is triggered with one button) is good. changing some view angles to show 'yeah, the blast threw you across the room!' is cool and gives another aesthetic. However, stealing our control at times where we want it (that promethean scene, for example) where it would have been totally fine to stay within the realm of the game's controls, for a longish period of time, locking us into one path (something halo has often avoided to good effect) is simply boring and un-immersive.

Klasse They're all over. Even videos that I might agree with for what their asking for often don't give good reasons. ex: people telling 343 to overhaul the next game because it doesn't "feel like Halo". Sorry, but tell me what Halo "feels" like. I don't think just telling 343 to take out all of the new stuff is constructive. Nor do I think blaming them for every change when the artistic style was changed by Bungie with Halo Reach, is fair or constructive. I also don't find it constructive when people tell 343 "put split-screen back in, or else... we don't care what the reasons for taking it out were." It's like they forget that 343 is a group of people, who have human limitations, working with hardware that has limitations, far beyond what can be achieved with PCs.

Something else I think needs to go: pre-rendered cutscenes. The original Halo trilogy created its cutscenes in-engine and didn't break up the gameplay too much with loading screens simply for storytelling, which in my opinion is much better.

This is so true I dont go back and play games very story driven. I have already played them and learned what i wanted too. Halo i always go back because of the gameplay. The older halos are the only ones I play probably because it is barely story driven with amazing gameplay. Cutscenes in cod are cool for a first time playthrough but it always is the same old same old. So new replay value. In halo between infantry and vehicle combat it almost never plays the same. Halo 4 and 5 feel like cod with the cutscenes and I never go back and play either of those just halo 1 2 3 i go back and play extensively. What do you guys think im interested to know if you agree with me or not.
