Wow !!!!!!!!! Thank you, I am 75. I'm not a dummy, In fact I know a lot about computers, electronics and I try to keep up with technology. I want to thank you for breaking this subject down to plain English ( with a clear and distinctive voice ) that even an old-timer like me to a 13 year old child can Distinctively comprehend.

How does it work at restaurants. Do you hand the phone over with the checkbook.
@jayhamm586

I was in a restaurant in Ghana and the waiters had a mobile POS that had an NFC chip in it, so when you ask for the check, they ask how you want to pay, and if you tell them you’re paying with your phone, they bring the check with the portable device. It was super convenient and I had no issues with Amex or Visa.

Two potential issues that affect digital wallets: 1) Back end digital payment servers/systems are down: Can affect you adversely if you don't have backup - but I always carry backup credit/debit cards securely on my person. 2) Scammers will pay using digital wallets and then once the transaction is completed, void the transaction. But this is true of other payment systems - but credit cards have a tracking system that can be contested.

"...but credit cards have a tracking system that can be contested...." so do digital wallet transactions, you receive confirmation of the transaction on your device. Also, each month you can receive a monthly statement of your usage.

@@ricdonato4328 yep store n exact location, so even if you don’t have your location turned on, it’s an automatic trace. How? Your device is linked to your card n creates a unique Card number, so the transactions doesn’t need to know your full debit/Credit numbers bc your device acts as a middle-man keeping your info safe.

I remember when I had left my card at a friend's house (Ordering pizza while a night of drinking), the next day I get a call from the friend telling me I left my card out and they'd secure it for me. The bad news was that they had a trip planned and I wouldn't be able to get to them in time. So for almost a week I was using my digital wallet. Had no choice. It wasn't too hard to find places that excepted it. It was a breeze. Yea, I switched back only because I bought a new phone and never got a chance to redownload it, but I recommend it. Even as a back up.

It also limits your physical exposure. If you have ever lost your wallet or had it stolen you might know what I am talking about. Personally, my moment was after having my gym locker broken into and the CCs stolen with them leaving my phone and non-cash wallet contents. If they would have taken my license, health insurance card, etc it would have been even more of a nightmare. Can't save yourself from everything but now I carry zero plastic, my license sits locked in my glove box and some cash hidden in the vehicle for an emergency. Even the healthcare card, etc. I have been forced to get more tech savvy and just keep digital records of it. For transaction purchases you also get rid of your CC skimmer risks when go this route. Not that you aren't covered, but I don't want criminals to have an easy go of things.

Its basically the same situation in reverse if you lose your physical wallet. The big 3 banks in the US for the most part you can use Apple Pay to replace the physical card and get access. Each person has their own reasoning, for me it was getting my gym locker broken into and the CCs from my wallet stolen. For whatever reason they left my phone and the non-cash items. That day I decided I was going to try to get rid of my physical wallet because I knew with the security settings there was near zero chance they could brute force into my iphone. I keep my license and small amount of cash hidden in my car for an emergency.

I am interested in learning more. Question: What happens if your phone or watch is stolen? I don't see people entering a code or anything when using the digital wallet . Also, I use an RFID wallet to prevent people from 'grabbing' my accounts with other devices. Is the phone/watch protected from that sort of acct / ID theft?

Hi! We have some information on the safety of digital wallets in our article: clark.com/credit-cards/clark-howard-digital-wallet-google-pay/ As for other safety measures, the settings on your phone are your friend. Setting a password, PIN, or biometric lock will add an extra layer of protection. If the device is lost or stolen, most of them allow you to wipe the device remotely without losing your info stored in the cloud through Google or Apple.

more secure as you can limit your liability and zero is reported as negative credit issues. I even buy Prepaid visa debit for online transactions put $200 on it and that's your liability limit if lost or stolen no name no link to the bank.
@joemann7971
@joemann7971 3 жыл бұрын
@@AlanDeRossett Unless you only use prepaid once in a while, using prepaid is a terrible idea, since many of them charge maintenance fees. You're better off just applying for checking account with an online bank. Several online banks offer free checking accounts with zero monthly fees, and most don't have overdraft protection, which limits how much can be taken out. You can easily link them to your main account. You can often even transfer money into them within minutes using Zelle. At worst, you may need to wait 2-3 days for money to transfer using ACH, but you'll pay zero fees and still get many of the same benefits you described as a prepaid card, but without the fees.

more secure
@joemann7971
@joemann7971 3 жыл бұрын
It's more secure because if you lose your phone, you can log into a computer and disable all the cards on the device at once. If you were to lose your real wallet, you would need to call each bank one by one to cancel and reissue a new card. With Google Pay, you don't even need t new card, since the card on the phone isn't even your real card number thats stored. Each bank has to authorize the card to be used with the service, which is why not all cards will work with Google Pay. Google is more concerned with tracking your purchasing activity so they can later sell you stuff you dont need, but would likely buy. They wont steal from you directly.

I've tried this and it doesn't work. For starters most businesses don't accept Google pay because it costs them money so your forced to use a physical visa debit card same with self filling petrol stations. Also, your driving license is going to be issue too when you get pulled over. Digital licenses and passports are not wide stream yet (probably never will be) only 2 places do this in the world. One state in the United States and there other in Australia. Good luck I'm very practical person.

But when I pay with a card, I get at min. 2% cash back. For my groceries (and other items), I get 5%. I used to pay cash for everything, but realized it was a sucker move. The transaction fees are baked into the prices. You can pay cash for businesses that you like. When I go to the mechanic or the dentist (aka mouth mechanic), I make sure to pay with AMEX because they have the highest transaction fees.
