This is giving my age away, but in Boston at Saks 5th Ave I actually assisted her with her cosmetic needs. She was an Elizabeth Arden fan. I have never been more dumb struck before or since. She was very patient with me because I was in shock…She even helped me locate a jar of cream that she wanted. She was sweet and lovely.

Yes this video is ridiculous. Clark Gable puts a hammer down his pants and she’s a “nightmare” for being uncomfortable with that? The narrator of this video makes no sense. Not to mention he mentioned nothing she did that actually was controversial at the time, like her relationship with Helen O Hagan.

I've seen just a few of her movies and she's great in all of them - It Happened One Night, Imitation of Life and Boomtown. She's definitely one of my favorite actresses along with Barbara Stanwyk, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn and Joan Crawford. BTW, I think both Claudette Colbert and Lana Turner (another of my favorites!) were great in Imitation of Life. CC played the role in 1934 and LT played the role in 1959. The don't make great movies like that anymore or great actresses for that matter!

If your a real Colbert fan you must see two of her best roles that couldn't be more opposite from one another, showing her incredible diversity and range. One being the star of Cecil B. DeMille's 1934 "Cleopatra", ( nominated for a best picture Oscar). A glamorous role, where as tiny as Colbert was, she gave her portrayal power and gravitas. And the David O. Selznick 1944 moving war time drama "Since You Went Away" ( Colbert was nominated for a leading actress Oscar) She plays a middle class wife and mother of two grown daughters; Shirley Temple and Jennifer Jones( in her first film roll) who's husband has gone off to war. Colbert puts on a brave face trying to hold the family together while coping with money problems, rationing and various other "home front" situations in a very touching and realistic way. An unusual subject matter not often portrayed on film and a real treasure.

Some years ago, I had a friend who worked for British Airways as a steward ( as they were than called ). One youngish pilot, with whom he flew regularly on the UK /US route, liked to be informed of any ' celebrities ' in 1st class. On one trip he espied Claudette Colbert who was coming to London to appear in a play with Rex Harrison in the West End. My friend went to the cockpit and excitedly told the pilot that a famous movie-star was on board. " Who is it ? " asked the pilot, and he was told who it was. " Claudette Colbert ? " he said " never heard of her ! "

Richard Long's first job was as Colbert's son in Tomorrow is Forever. His words:"I was just out of high school, seventeen years old and scared as hell. Tomorrow Is Forever (1946) was my first picture, and playing Claudette's son was the break of my life. Of course I was green and awkward, and I know she sensed my hesitancies and doubts. I always felt that in the complicated scenes I had to do with her that she was playing back specially to me, her eyes willing ease and encouragement. I know I played off her eyes, often. Claudette was a woman of great dignity, and for all her warmth, had a kind of charming reserve." Some nightmare.......

I'd like to know where the information about Miss Colbert's difficulty on IT HAPPENED ON NIGHT came from since all other accounts acknowledge that this was the movie neither star wanted to make. I wonder if it's always necessary to have such a random, disorganised selection of photos with these films. If the comment is talking about films in the 1920s, why not show photos from the 1920s instead of photos from the 30s, the 40s, the 50s? It would make more sense and help to illustrate the points better. And if someone like Colbert started on stage, surely there are photos from stage productions to use as illustrations. This lack of attention to detail is sloppy, or lazy, or both.
@AgeOfVintage

Sometimes it is really hard to find good quality pictures of a movie, era, spouse...even from the actor/actress itself. If I only find pixelated photos, I don't use them, only the high resolution ones. In this case, I found it better to show random pictures of the actress. I know it is sometimes confusing, but I made this decision in the favor of better resolution. Thank you for your comment!

I get the impression that Claudette Colbert was strongly dedicated to her craft as an actress. Good for her. I have always admired her beauty and, of course, her wonderful range of characters, mostly delightfully wholesome ladies, be it girlfriends, mothers, wives, or sisters. I don't recall hearing anything controversial about her. In fact, I don't get the impression that she was hard to work with from this video, which I thank you for presenting, I might add. I conclude that she was so down-to-earth with everyone in Hollywood and elsewhere. There will never be another Claudette Colbert or a generation of actors like hers, but they left behind a huge body of work to be shared by all.

A of V, I do wonder if Claudette Cobert would have had the same situation Loretta Young had being both worked back to back with Clark Gable in different movies in 1934 & 1935. What if a child would have came out of both movies as well. Hollywood never changes it's stripes. R. C. J.

Age of Vintage: recently started viewing. Classical movie fan. I have been enjoying what I have viewed. Thank you! Note: I learn alot by reading the comments too. However, there are some rude and insensitive people out there that do not have a clue about providing helpful and constructive criticism. I know "They" will always be a part of life and it is necessary to blow it off, blame it their upbringing or something. I am so glad I was raised the way I was. I am not perfect by any means. However, I was taught how to treat others respectively and I have found it is a great tool in life. If you ever feel a bit of vibration on your device, it is me cringing, having just read another rude comment. 🙂 Thanks again!

There are alot of angry, miserable people out there that are waiting to vent. I know it can be hard. But try not to take it personal. And so what if they don't agree or don't like it. I would love to see the job they would do if they tried... OMG! It could truly be a mess. Lol. There were a lot of beautiful and talented actresses back in the old black-and-white era of movies and television. I remember back in the 60s, hearing that Claudette Colbert was a part of a group of women in Hollywood called The Sewing Circle. It's no surprise that Hollywood has always been a den of iniquity. So many actors and actresses with dark pasts.

Great actress, strong woman! Read once that when the male studio heads got too controlling she said to Louis B Mayer, "No one knows the business of Claudette Colbert better than Claudette Colbert! Many of the great female stars back then had iron fists in a velvet glove like the late great Kate Hepburn, Bette Davis, Rosalind Russell, Carol Lombard and Barbara Stanwyk and didn't take any crap from the top brass! They were business women as well as great actresses! They had to be, or they would have been taken advantage of and eaten alive! Assertive "Swell dames" like Bogie use to say! Same for his wife, Lauren Bacall! Read Colbert retired to the island of Barbados and is buried there.

Hi Age of Vintage, how are you going ? A fascinating insight into the life of Claudette Colbert. She certainly liked to flaunt around with her new leading man, on the making of her current movie at the time. She won her Academy Award playing alongside Clark Gable, in It Happened One Night. She also played alongside Gable in Boomtown. Her famous controversial filming was in The Sign of the Cross, where she bathed in a milk bath. She also played the title character in Cecil B. DeMille movie Cleopatra. Later on in her life she suffered a series of small strokes & she passed away in 1996 she was 92 years old . RIP Claudette Colbert. Claudette seemed to have a European attitude toward nudity,i.e. she didn't mind posing or being photographed at least partially nude in films! She seemed to have no problem doing that in numerous films & was restricted in doing more riske' scenes only becauuse of Hollywood's strict Hayes law!

My parents went to the rather risqué (in those days) “It Happened One Night” on their first date. The theatre was pretty full so they couldn’t sit together and Mom sat a few rows in front of dad. Just before the movie started she turned around and gave him a big smile. Dad always said that was the moment he knew he was going to marry her.
