Richard Long's first job was as Colbert's son in Tomorrow is Forever. His words:"I was just out of high school, seventeen years old and scared as hell. Tomorrow Is Forever (1946) was my first picture, and playing Claudette's son was the break of my life. Of course I was green and awkward, and I know she sensed my hesitancies and doubts. I always felt that in the complicated scenes I had to do with her that she was playing back specially to me, her eyes willing ease and encouragement. I know I played off her eyes, often. Claudette was a woman of great dignity, and for all her warmth, had a kind of charming reserve." Some nightmare.......

If your a real Colbert fan you must see two of her best roles that couldn't be more opposite from one another, showing her incredible diversity and range. One being the star of Cecil B. DeMille's 1934 "Cleopatra", ( nominated for a best picture Oscar). A glamorous role, where as tiny as Colbert was, she gave her portrayal power and gravitas. And the David O. Selznick 1944 moving war time drama "Since You Went Away" ( Colbert was nominated for a leading actress Oscar) She plays a middle class wife and mother of two grown daughters; Shirley Temple and Jennifer Jones( in her first film roll) who's husband has gone off to war. Colbert puts on a brave face trying to hold the family together while coping with money problems, rationing and various other "home front" situations in a very touching and realistic way. An unusual subject matter not often portrayed on film and a real treasure.

I wonder if it's always necessary to have such a random, disorganised selection of photos with these films. If the comment is talking about films in the 1920s, why not show photos from the 1920s instead of photos from the 30s, the 40s, the 50s? It would make more sense and help to illustrate the points better. And if someone like Colbert started on stage, surely there are photos from stage productions to use as illustrations. This lack of attention to detail is sloppy, or lazy, or both.
@AgeOfVintage4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it is really hard to find good quality pictures of a movie, era, spouse...even from the actor/actress itself. If I only find pixelated photos, I don't use them, only the high resolution ones. In this case, I found it better to show random pictures of the actress. I know it is sometimes confusing, but I made this decision in the favor of better resolution. Thank you for your comment!

Great actress, strong woman! Read once that when the male studio heads got too controlling she said to Louis B Mayer, "No one knows the business of Claudette Colbert better than Claudette Colbert! Many of the great female stars back then had iron fists in a velvet glove like the late great Kate Hepburn, Bette Davis, Rosalind Russell, Carol Lombard and Barbara Stanwyk and didn't take any crap from the top brass! They were business women as well as great actresses! They had to be, or they would have been taken advantage of and eaten alive! Assertive "Swell dames" like Bogie use to say! Same for his wife, Lauren Bacall! Read Colbert retired to the island of Barbados and is buried there.

A of V, I do wonder if Claudette Cobert would have had the same situation Loretta Young had being both worked back to back with Clark Gable in different movies in 1934 & 1935. What if a child would have came out of both movies as well. Hollywood never changes it's stripes. R. C. J.

A child was born from Loretta Young and Clark Gable in 1935, and she wrote a book. He never knew and Young never acknowledged the daughter as her actual daughter.

I’ve always wondered what she would’ve been like in a French-language film - or, for another example, how Natalie Wood might have been speaking Russian in a movie. Each of these would have been a fascinating and intriguingly different thing for both actresses.

Colbert has always been my favorite actress. The fact that she and my mother could be sisters, they look so much alike is a plus My favorite movie: Drums Along The Mohawk with Henry Fonda and Edna May Oliver. I think Claudette was too smart to have an affair with Gable but who’s alive to really know.

I remembered as a kid how popular Claudette Colbert was. She was on our list of most liked MOVIE STARS. Her personality on screen(especially in light comedies) always came off as so delightful. She was my buddy's favorite movie star. What a delight we have such negative facts about our favorite movie stars of The Golden Age of Hollywood. How proud this narrator and anybody else involved with all of this B. S. must be.

A director told her that the left side of her face was "her best side" and ever afterwards, would allow her face to be photographed exclusively from the left side. Even her straight-on images are tilted ever so slightly to her right, exposing as much of the left as possible. When she had to go up a staircase for a scene for a movie, it forced her to show the right side of her face. CC solved this problem by walking up the stairs....BACKWARDS!

Hi Age of Vintage, how are you going ? A fascinating insight into the life of Claudette Colbert. She certainly liked to flaunt around with her new leading man, on the making of her current movie at the time. She won her Academy Award playing alongside Clark Gable, in It Happened One Night. She also played alongside Gable in Boomtown. Her famous controversial filming was in The Sign of the Cross, where she bathed in a milk bath. She also played the title character in Cecil B. DeMille movie Cleopatra. Later on in her life she suffered a series of small strokes & she passed away in 1996 she was 92 years old . RIP Claudette Colbert. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺💖🎬🎬📽📽💙💚💜💛❤⚘⚘🌹🌹💋💋

My parents went to the rather risqué (in those days) “It Happened One Night” on their first date. The theatre was pretty full so they couldn’t sit together and Mom sat a few rows in front of dad. Just before the movie started she turned around and gave him a big smile. Dad always said that was the moment he knew he was going to marry her. Must have been one heck of a smile because the rest is history.❤️❤️❤️

Claudette seemed to have a European attitude toward nudity,i.e. she didn't mind posing or being photographed at least partially nude in films! She seemed to have no problem doing that in numerous films & was restricted in doing more riske' scenes only becauuse of Hollywood's strict Hayes law!
