It’s amazing how most of the spices in the “why expensive series” feature South India, mainly Kerala, Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka. These spices are which drove ancient Europeans (Portuguese, Dutch and English) to reach India. The Portuguese first landed in northern part of Kerala (Malabar) and its recorded that they were gifted with loads of pepper. Much before the Europeans, we had Arab and Jew traders and that also shaped the culture of Kerala today. I live in the North part of Kerala (still South India) that’s lush green and we have a small garden (really small, less than 1/4th acre) and we still have one clove tree, cardamom plants, pepper vines, Tea and coffee 😅 We call our place “God’s own country” and indeed we are blessed. For people who are watching around the world - Do visit India and if you’re interested in spices, do not miss entire Kerala, some parts of Tamilnadu such as Theni, Kanyakumari and Coorg in Karnataka ❤️ Munnar in Kerala offers spice garden visits.

That's what the distributor does. Imagine the time that will need to be spent by one person to coordinate, negotiate, arrange for transport from the growers. That time needs to be paid.
@anmolagrawal53582 жыл бұрын
@@RajasNadkarni Yes, you are right. However, the distributor usually has to set up a network in order to transport it to *different* locations. Since this isn't necessarily high skilled labor, one of the society workers could be tasked with this. The more the number of individuals, the less likely it is that his/her salary would be reflected substantially in total costs
@rockon6092 жыл бұрын
Cheaper for consumers maybe, to a point,but there’s many reasons multiple distribution levels exist. As the business, Instead of shipping to a couple dozen places for the product to be further distributed, you would be shipping to many many more. Direct can’t work because you’re shipping to way more places with smaller orders, so are you sending one whole container or truckload of the product at a time? You’d have to only sell to consumers who fill up the whole shipment, and if not, losing money. The more distributing you cut the more work gets made for the ones that are left, the less viable the shipments make as they are smaller and go to more places. Shipping costs become a much bigger percent of the pie. Not to mention cloves are seasonal right so for this example they’d have to keep a distributing business not running efficiently and then go months with it shut down? What happens to employees, vehicles, real estate, costs can’t just stop for those. Then again what you are saying to a point already exists elsewhere, stores like Costco and Walmart have such low prices because they have streamlined the distribution. But that’s different.

They are wonderful in soups, stews, and teas. They pair wonderfully with pork or chicken or tofu main protein dishes. I can't even think of a course that can't be enhanced with cloves (if balanced and paired with correct spices/proteins/vegetables). And the Autumn/Fall season can not be without cloves. Ironically, in India, we use many of these spices (Cloves, Cinnamon and Cardamom) in Biriyani - only to spit them out. Yep, they’re expensive here as well and most of the times, we don’t get the export quality ones ourselves. They’re reserved for the West and Middle East. Cloves are so potent in taste that it can ruin the taste of everything else, if chewed. One another medicinal application of clove is that, if you have sharp pain in your tooth, you just have to place a clove pod in your teeth and hold tight, spit out the saliva for sometime and you’re good. Apparently, some companies are advertising that their pastes contain cloves 😅

In India, it cost 5-7 pounds per KG and in the United Kingdom, it cost 18-20 pounds per kg. So, I would say it's not expensive at all. I have realized that when it comes to nuts and spices then you are overestimating the prices. Have good research on this.

And Cloves have so many uses! They are good for the bodys' immune system - clove tea, pour hot water over Cloves. Cloves keep little bugs away from the clothes closet. Put an amount of Cloves in a bowl with Bay Leaves or in clothes pockets, put them in drawers, they smell good. A bit time consuming but Cloves can be inserted into oranges and put in closets. Take a push-pin or Safety Pin to make holes in oranges, first. Put a ribbon around the orange/cloves and they're stocking stuffers and a personal memento. They last a long time. And a Ham with Cloves? What's a Ham baked without Cloves stuck all over it?!
