In their minds, not yet adult minds..and that part of the book is told in the mindset of being part of a group of kids...kids don't always make the most mature decisions. And also they THINK they are, but it's only from the understanding of their age. In their minds..knowing they needed to...understand each other to higher levels. Being close enough to kinda have a link....and they took that as, many adults would say, sex. You will always have a bond with the first person you ever had sex with. And being that they were friends already, having sex would be that EXTRA link..the for sure link. The bond that will makes sure they don't lose each other. That was the thought process
