Idk if i just had a bad therapist, but when I did CBT it just felt like an hour of someone gaslighting me and downplaying all my problems. I always came out of there more frustrated than I went it

Thank you for this video, Esther. I always struggled to grasp CBT. I always felt like I was gaslighting myself with CBT because the "more rational" thoughts I was trying to tell myself were in direct contrast to the reality of my lived experience. Also, I think it doesn't work very well for those of us who are more heart-centered, emotional personality types and aren't particularly in tune with a logical, deductive type of thought process. Some of us just aren't wired that way.

This is interesting and true. As someone attending body psychotherapy (including EMDR), I have been told that focusing on the linkages of body and emotions and trauma is righfully my priority, but also that CBT would not be helping me with my journey. I now think there must be a way to utilize both approaches, but therapists are not always ready to advise you on how to do it in practice.

I’ve actually no idea what she’s rambling on about, I’m had my second CBT session day before yesterday and it amuses me the way the therapist keeps trying to steer it round to negative thoughts because that all she knows how to deal with, when I don’t have any, it’s just depression

Yeah, they're obsessed with negative thoughts. They just keep saying think positive but it's hard if you're struggling with various aspects of your life. Legit got accused by some guy (not a therapist or mental health professional) of being negative when he was the one being negative to me. Funny that. 🤔😝 I actually tried to help him but he conveniently chose to "forget" that. This guy thought he was being a therapist when he was just being an asshole. CBT is only offered for 6 sessions where I am. That is their free cure for depression and anxiety. No other treatments. It's terrible. I found what helped me is a distraction I.e. a hobby.

Maybe because it feels like a floaty reiki course or something, was expecting them to suggest I should hug trees....

Yes, finding a modality that works for you, and a skilled therapist that you connect with is so important to good healing! I'd share with your therapist directly if something isn't working, so that they can reframe your treatment, and hopefully provide some real relief.

Shouldn't the title be CBT didnt work for ME, instead of YOU. We are all different. CBT is no panacea, but it is the most widly used therapy in the Western world, and classed as a gold standard.
