Ah, the good old "evil for the sake of being evil" villain. Where have you gone? Look I get that evil isn't as black and white as we'd like to think it is. But sometimes there are people who fall into the "I'm evil for the sake of being evil" category, even in the modern day. It's only now that we're getting more "complex" villians with backstories and stuff because we're starting to realize that evil isn't as black and white as we'd like to think it is sometimes.

To use a present example, Frollo's actions and warped mindset remind me of Sakasuki Akainu from One Piece. Like Frollo, he not only has a rather...twisted and cruel idea of justice. But Akainu seems to think that according to his morality, EVERY crime deserves death; no matter how small. A little girl tracks mud on his boots, he boils her in lava. A man steals a coin purse in order to use the money for some medicine he desperately needs, he boils them in lava. You tell your friends at the bar that the government is corrupt and the system is broken, you either get a bullet through the head or boiled in lava. It's because of men like Akainu that I continue to believe that Luffy, despite his acts of piracy, is the better man in his world

I always feel that the antagonists who are just bad for the sake of being bad are a dying breed. There now have to be either twist antagonists or antagonists with a tragic motive. Well I don't mind either of these types I feel it overshadows what served as a focal inspiration behind them. I'm going to use the typical example here. Ganon. We do not like Ganon because he's a twist antagonist or a tragic antagonist. We like Ganon because he's intimidating, powerful, has vast armies and resources, and has immense demonic and somewhat godly magic. You know that whenever he takes the scene some serious things are going to go down. Even to this day I get shivers from him due to how terrifyingly evil and brooding his presence is. We need more "Ganons" if you know what I mean.

Saying pure evil villains are unrealistic in society is nonsense. Hitler, for example, is a pure evil villain and he really existed. He killed millions of people, thought he was racially superior, and wanted to take over the world. He was a real guy if he was real, villains like him are entirely plausible, realistic, and justified in fiction. I am very glad you brought him up as an example. I feel like most people today pushing the nonsense about Voldemort and other pure evil villains not being realistic or good characters never actually studied World War II. The people who have this view point just seem so divorced from reality, like they spend so much time reading or watching fictional villains on the internet that they forget about actual evil in both history and the modern day.

Here's my two cents Giving personality and flare to psycho/sociopath is all you need for a good villian. Example:Bill Cipher is an unredeemable demon, but Alex Hirsch's weird performance of the character and the lore around Bill is great and makes people love the character despite him also scarring a lot of our favorites in the show. Good performance and writing makes us dismissive a stupid reason for being nightmare fuel. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

the other problem with trying too had to make a character more complex is the trap in thinking 'complex' also equals 'redeemable' meanng that no matter how heinous an action if the antgaonist has some cheap sob story about how noone loved them it's OKAY to ignore all the awful shit they did (including MURDERING people) in order for them to be redeemed. Too much mdoern media make this mistake and thus have characters do horrible shit and don't punish them (often without them even saying 'sorry') simply cause they're 'good now'. Because sure all the people they hurt don't MATTER, which is the message this sends. That the asshole who hurt people matters more than the lives they ruined. The OTHER trap is thinking a character who's more complex (and thus not just 'pure evil') is better overall, but can lead to an uncompelling villain cause their motives doesn't match their actions or their personality isn't very strong. just my two cents as a fan of pure villains.
@jeremy18604 жыл бұрын
Awesome video. I like both kind of villains, the pure evil and the complicated, but when you mix the two together (or at least try to) you wind up with a character that just isn't as interesting as they would have been if they'd just kept them one way or the other. It's one of the reasons why I love stuff like what Studio Ghibli rolls out. Some of their antagonist, especially the likes of Lady Eboshi from Princess Mononoke, are in opposition to the heroes yet still have an understandable reason for doing what they do. Yet they're still shown as people who need to be stopped, regardless of what it is that drives their actions. It's something I appreciate with works like that, how the things that cause a person to do what they do don't prevent them from people people who need opposition 😊

The thing that especially makes Frollo, and to an extent, Scar, such memorable villains is that they are very real types of people. KP, you should be a professor. Seriously, this is great stuff. I've long believed that nothing kills a story faster than a boring villain. The problem with the whole "Evil just because" approach is that it tends to be very boring; a character who commits atrocities just for the hell of it is so one-dimensional. Contrast that with an evil figure who, though their actions are awful, are done with a purpose/goal that said villain devoutly believes in. I think some of the most interesting villains are the ones who have convinced themselves that *they* are right, and it's everybody else who is wrong. As an aside, such villains are often very charismatic, which makes it easier for people to fall under their sway. Anyway, fantastic video (as always!)

Sometimes a villain doesn’t need the complexity of being relatable or sympathetic to work as an antagonist to a story in a movie. Making a villain a person we can empathize with sometimes works against them because at the end of the day we still supposed to want the bad guy to lose & the heroes to win, not wishing things turned out better for the ner-do-wells. Showing that he/she could’ve been good or less evil if they were better understood tends to make them less interesting for me. I already liked Maleficent and Joker before they were given tragic back stories in recent films to explain why they’re evil now; just having fun with being bad had already made them memorable and likable. Making Maleficent overcome betrayal from a rape allegory, or having Joker being mental disabled because his foster mother abused him in a convoluted extortion plan against not his father do explain their turns to the dark side, but instead of hoping they are defeated we’re now supposed to feel bad for them & justify their villainy because they weren’t loved right before now.

Another evil for the sake of evil is Myotismon/Vamdemon from Digimon Adventure. I always like to think of him as the Digimon version of a Disney Villain and he's like Frollo in a sense that he constantly obsesses over the female character's eyes. Not in a sexual way thankfully, since Digimon don't reproduce that way but more so the fact her eyes show defiance than fear that he's not use seeing. He likes seeing torture and pain so it's possible that he fears of those that don't show fear to him, but that only makes him want to crush this bravery with even more fear. He does so much damage in mass numbers too like Frollo did. So basically Myotismon is like what if Frollo and Malificent had a kid. One that loves to be evil like Mal and be obsessive and destructive like Frollo. With a vampire design, it's one of the reasons why he's my favorite anime villain in general of all time.
@MrMarinus184 жыл бұрын
Also relatable does not have to mean sympathetic. Arucenimon and Mummymon were very relatable but not really sympathetic. They were relatable because they were 3 dimensional characters. They didn't just do evil and that's it; they could be surprised, frustrated, flirtatious, sad, bored and everything. When MeloMyotismon killed Arucenimon Mummymon was genuinely upset and attacked him despite knowing that as a medium powered ultimate he had no hope of winning against a high powered mega.

Frollo is a great example of how you can make a villain have fleshed out motivations so the audience can tell they are more than just like Haha aren't I EVIL kind of villain without being sympathetic. We understand why he does what he does and we understand why he feels conflicted over his Desire/Lust for Esmeralda. However he isn't sympathetic because he shouldn't be, you don't need a sad backstory to be cruel. Also always giving ppl sad backstories kinda implies that if you're abused or suffered in life you are going to turn into an abuser. And that ppl should expect this of you when they learn your past. Some ppl are cruel because that's just how they are and they use aspects of society to justify and enforce their cruel views. Like using law and religion as Frollo does to persecute Gypies and others.

That shot of Darth Vader and the Emperor doesn't really work for what you're talking about at that point in the video, at least not Darth Vader, since we have his backstory. If you want the Emperor because he's just pure evil, go to Return of the Jedi when he's electrocuting Luke. Another good example from Star Wars would be Darth Maul, but specifically what we saw from Clone Wars. He's literally there to sew chaos, ruin plans, and enact revenge on anyone that ever wrongs him, he's great. If you have the proper context and build-up, the Lawless Arc (Season 5 Episodes 14-16) is a rip roarin' good time because it's nothing but bad guys doing bad things for the sake of being bad, and it's awesome in the purist sense.

I dunno, I feel like the American Hunchback play did its work to still make its version of Frollo a very engaging character and villain because of the added backstory. The backstory is there for context and almost(Not quite, but almost) takes him in a sympathetic direction while keeping the seeds of his descent into madness, but if anything it makes the reveal of his aggressive lust for Esmeralda feel like a fucked up betrayal to whatever good we saw in him. That way, it doesn’t completely take away the bite his character will have later in the story, but instead makes the fall part of the whole package. It’s not like the original German version where they just copied the movie almost entirely but softened him in all of the worst ways.

Yes, I've done NCIS/Bruce Wayne Batman level of detective Wiki search into a fictional character. Because I wonder why she was serious & mildly pissed off at times, not to mention having to raise a not-so-bright step daughter name Cinderella I say that because Cinderella doesn't really make good life decisions without thinking about the possible outcome. Since the Cinderella story is in the public domain, anyone of us can use it so long as we don't go off by the Disney continuity unless we want to get sued to oblivion. Queen Grimhilde from the Snow White story is not copyrighted instead in public domain, obviously fair free use again don't copy Disney continuity. Setting aside the actual question, I've really come to love this channels approach to character analysis. She's the type of person that is genuinely fun to debate with. I think a large factor for whether a truly evil villain is not only warranted, but necessary, are the stakes and contrasting protag. Lile your point on a black and white narrative. With nuances to character you can bring new depth to a story. But this always comes at a cost. Too much, and you muddle the entire conflict. Too little, and it's completely insincere. Also, I think theres a good point for discussion on the descendents. Becuase that's not a malificent movie. Its about a teen coming to terms with the sins of a parent. And pre conceived notions about certain people.

Another type of good villain that can also work is the NUMBER 1 worry our protagonist must face. MENTAL ISSUES. In Mulan people say, oh Shan Yu is the real villain because he wants all of China for himelf and in Frozen Hans is the main villain cause he secretly wants Arrendelle for himself and has to kill Elsa to get the kingdom. But what if I told you, none of these two aren't the actual villains? Mulan's main villain is the expectations being placed on the character. Just because Mulan herself has to pretend to be a man, doesn't mean she has to play by the rules, she's a strong woman finding a solutiions. And in Frozen, the real villain is Fear. Elsa's surrounded in a world where the normal people despise the weird and unexpected. because of her powers getting stronger and because of an accident revolving around her sister, Anna. She has to learn that fear than be conquered, when an act of true love thaws a frozen heart. If you want something worse for your character to face, the lesson is for the real villain to be a mental issue. It's not about a thousand huns racing down a snowy mountain nor is it about an imposter disguised as a handsome prince, it's about something far worse surrounding you.

If you get a chance you should explore the difference between sidekicks and lackeys. There was an episode of Star Trek where Kirk and Company were joined with Abraham Lincoln, Sarek and others to battle evil people from history so that an alien race could tell which side was stronger, to understand the difference. In the end the aliens missed the point. In the episode Kirk's side tried to talk to the bad guys to avoid the fight. Didn't work for a simple reason: evil needs victims. Not in the sense that they need food or to reproduce (the monster in Alien), but in the sense that their lives are not complete if they aren't proving themselves better than someone else. evil is in many ways simply outgrowth of ego. Hitler and Stalin had it in spades, (check out this book for a good profile of them www.amazon.com/Alan-Bullock-ebook/dp/B07YRVWWHR/ref=sr_1_1?crid=4Z9TTNUGYKBT&dchild=1&keywords=hitler+and+stalin+parallel+lives&qid=1590181047&sprefix=Hitler+and+Sta%2Caps%2C237&sr=8-1 Personally I can take villains either way depending upon the story. Growing up my favorite villainess was Witchie-Poo from H.R. PuffnStuff. (Best witches laugh ever!). As an add on to this someone at a convention once described the character of Black Adder in Black Adder goes forth as a character who wanted to be a great villain, but was overshadowed by the greater villain of World War 1.
@MrMarinus184 жыл бұрын
I would say the difference between them is that a lackey does not have much self-initiative and is completely subservient to the main villain. A side-kick is loyal to the villain but does have their own ideas and opinions.

I never really thought about that. What i've been thinking about was what caused Frollo's extreme prejudice against Gypsies. Childhood trauma? Abusive parents? Overcome by grief? I don't really know.

What an excellent video! I love your information about evil people and how they just enjoy being evil compared to people becoming evil to get their justice, especially Disney villains! But you should go check out Villainous by Alan Ituriel on AI Animation Studios and Cartoon Network Studios 2017. You might see some real villainy in Black Hat selling weapons and being badass despite being retired! Here’s the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6Cbf6p6pdmfoK8

I do think all villains should have a believable motivation. However believable does not have to mean sympathetic.
@mannym2754 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't force your villain to follow the trend. If they go naturally with the chaotic evil type then you must change the story, with great loss. Gray zone villains are the best imo, like in megamind
@loke66643 жыл бұрын
I fell that Frollo is the most realistic of all the Disney villains and his motivation is that he is a religious zealot that believes God wants him to act like that. He is hopefully not one of those villains any viewer wants to sympathize with but that is fine. I agree that this kind of villainy still works and think it is a mistake to make all villains seems misguided but sympathetic. If history ever told us anything, it is that some people are just jerks. The current trend is probably to teach kids that other kids they don't get along with have their reasons but I am not sure that is a perfect reason, some people are just not very nice. Disney in particular have been moving towards this for some time now but I don't think simplification is helping anyone. And from a story perspective both kinda works, but in a long running show you should mix it up a bit. Some people are doing bad things even if they aren't really bad themselves but when every villain is like that things get both boring and unrealistic. Having every villain evil just because of it is pretty boring too, humans are rather complex and even the most good person have some bad thoughts now and then.

Sometimes, real and/or fictional people are just...horrible for the sake of it. Don't get me wrong, I love giving a villain a sympathetic angle; like Dr. Drakken from Kim Possible (one of your favorite shows) or Ice King from Adventure Time. But there are certain villains who just can't pull off the "misunderstood bad boy/girl vibe;" like Thanos, Darkseid, Ozai or others. Yet...Hollywood seems to think their work can't appeal to people unless their villain is "misunderstood"

Adventure Time is an interesting case cause they cover almost every degree of villain: you have the sympathetic villain with Ice King; the tragic villain with Magic Man; the deluded villain with Patience; and the evil villain with the Lich.

I agree that completely evil villains work but that is not the same as "Evil for the sake of Evil". Evil for the sake of Evil is when the Villain has no motivation, or is written to want Evil for its own sake. Discord for example wanted Chaos for its own sake as one of his primary motivations. Good, Order, and Chaos can work as reasonable motivations. But Evil for its own sake sounds hollow and is best replaced with a motivation that happens to be evil rather than merely the aspiration to be Evil. In contrast consider the depictions Maleficent. One depiction is more fleshed out but even the original tells us that she is a Fey that felt slighted and wanted to repay the slight (presumably to deter future slights). The latter version goes into more depth with describing the character and tries to make her sympathetic. But both can be Empathized with, unlike "Evil for the sake of Evil". So give us more of these unredeemable villains, these forces of malevolence, but don't cop out and make them "Evil because the author gave me no motive other than the aspiration to be Evil".
