It has been well documented that the reason the Romans and later the English could not conquer Scotland was not due to resistance but because of midges. The Antonine wall built by the Romans was constructed of timber and turf, which when made damp by the inclement Scottish weather, made the perfect conditions for midges. No medication was available back then and the constant itchiness became infected due to scratching. This caused the occupants to beat a hasty retreat. Even today, mere tourists are advised to medicate before going there. You can be wandering peacefully through the spectacular Scottish landscape when suddenly clouds of the bloodthirsty creatures appear out of nowhere and attack relentlessly.

For all their talk of honour and chivalry, these medieval lords and knights were nothing more than greedy, scheming snakes. The lot of them. Being honourable is a bit like heterosexuality. If you constantly have to speak about it, changes are you're compensating for something.

As an American, I get it. we have North and South here that's broke out in severe violence in our young history. This is over a 1k years of off and on fighting very interesting to learn about some times I'm on England side but other times I pick scottland. I grew up in New England, so that's why I got into English history. My state/ commonwealth, as its still called, still has the English lions from when they controlled the colonies on some older buildings in Boston.
@nothinghello83h5 ай бұрын
The north-south dynamic is very interesting indeed. And to think it was started before Scotland and England even existed. The romans essentially started it when they took over what is now England. Scotland was a bit too far north for them to stretch to to occupy for long enough, which basically gave 'England' the head start in population, infrastructure and weaponry. The divide of wealth and numbers was so evident that it ended up being roughly the same boarder long after the Roman empire ended. They were underdogs from the very start. Makes you wonder how things would have been different if the Roman empire had conquered the whole island. Would Scotland and France have taken over England? Maybe the British Empire would have never came to be. Then there wouldnt be a New England. It's crazy to think how far back it all goes. Then you think about wars today and how much impact it could have in another 1000 years

3 months, and I come across this video title..... WHY the English couldn't conquer Scotland. (They did in a way). As an English man it was the worse thing to happen. As a British man it was the best thing we did. So no the English didn't conquer as such and nor would they want too. The english royals did conquer all in the end. But now days as a British man Scotland is important to the success of Britian and I want our nations to be separate with our unique history and unique heritage. Together alongside the rest of the UK we manage to create something huge and many times punched above our weight. That's why the English couldn't conquer Scotland. They are as stubborn as an englishman and has a cultured that can't be beaten. Don't forget England was conquer by William. 1066. Scotland joined in In 1603 The saxon Alfred and his father would be the original english royals. But the ones that took over UK are not original. So That's why English couldn't conquer the Scott's. (The French technically did). William the Conqueror 1028[- 9 September 1087), sometimes called William the Bastard,]was the first Norman king of England (as William I), reigning from 1066 until his death. A descendant of Rollo, he was Duke of Normandy (as William II)[from 1035 onward. By 1060, following a long struggle to establish his throne, his hold on Normandy was secure. In 1066, following the death of Edward the Confessor, William invaded England, leading an army of Normans to victory over the Anglo-Saxon forces of Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings, Alfred the Great (c. 849 - 26 October 899) was King of Wessex from 871 to 899. He was the first king from the British Isles to call himself the 'King of the Anglo-Saxons' and so he is sometimes said to be the first English king. Alfred started the Royal Navy in the 9th century. __________________________ My point is that England was conquer by Normandy. 1066. French lead England then England and Scotland become British. (So the French conquered )

@andthe40105 ай бұрын
the concept of "conquest" is so funny and misleading to normal people.... most of you never consider that "conquering" just consisted of one guy telling another guy "ok yeah you're my boss and im gonna give you some money sometimes"... then this guy would go back home and the other guy would be like "yeah fuck that guy, I just said that shit so he'd go away"... the idea of kingdoms and nations and stuff in medieval times is actually kind of crazy and funny, it's a modern idea applied to the past... no common person in these times had any concept of a state, a nation, or anything like that. These were all just what rich people claimed to be their personal domains... while normal people were busy doing real shit that actually ensured survival like growing food and building shelter or making clothing.
