Although it isn't exactly worded that Bane was worried a single Dark Lord might be discovered and then defeated, he certainly was aware of the fact that the Rule of One left them extremely vulnerable for the exact reason you stated. Rule of two is certainly more effective it lasted far longer, lead to the most powerful sith lord of all time and the rule of one falls apart as soon as the One sith dies

I think the Rule of Two definitely served the Sith better in the long run than a Rule of One would have. That being said, I still think a modified Rule of Three (because the apprentices knowing one another well could supplant the master through combined strength in a simple Rule of Three) would have worked well. In fact, Darth Tenebrous attempted it, but then Plagueis did what he did to Venamis and eliminated the Rule of Two completely. What the Rule *should* have been (in my opinion) is one master should raise two apprentices, with perhaps only 1 knowing of the other. Then, after a conflict between them, the victor takes on two apprentices similarly. I like that idea...maybe I should be a Sith'ari! Move over, Bane! 😂 Great video! Enjoyed the Bane discussion, and I hope the rest of your weekend was wonderful. ☺

That seems like cool idea but I feel like it wouldn't work because of reasons bane explained as the two apprentices could team together and both being only half as strong as the master and defeat him and therefore the sith end up weaker. I think that banes rule of 2 is the way to go with the sith as continually strengthens them

Keegs Luke Hence the modification I described. 😉 You're right, as a straight "Rule of Three", there's a huge flaw, but as modified by Darth Tenebrous, it actually kind of worked and because Darth Plagueis did not expect a challenge, it really tested him at a weak moment when caught off guard. Therefore, truly only the stronger survived in that scenario. More than 3 would never work to help make the Sith stronger, though, so limiting their numbers really was key to their success.

Hey SWRC! Nice video, I highly approve of anything Bane related ;) Bane finding Revans holocron is definitely one of my favorite peaks of the Trilogy. I thought he trusted it a bit too much *getting back onto some of our discussion from the weekend* but we have to admit that it truly worked in the end. It always gives me a teasing thought of an Zannah/Cognus book! I've always been very interested in Darth Cognus's problems with Darth Millennial (one of the first problematic philosophy issues with the rule of two) and her removing him from the Bane line.

Matthew Chapman I would love it if all those characters came back into canon. Especially Cognus and Millennial are ones we practically know nothing about, so the canon wouldn't contradict anything from Legends. I want Darth Zannah back most of all though. Still, I am keeping my expectations low.

Thanks a lot Matthew! I had to throw in at least one Bane video after our discussions this past weekend, which was a ton of fun and I can't thank you enough for jumping in as well. Oh I am right there with you on that one re: a Zannah/Cognus novel. I remember after reading Dynasty of Evil thinking that it could very well be possible. Just to be clear since i see this falsehood thrown around alot. Bane didn't get the idea of the Rule of Two from Revan. The only thing Revan said to Bane that fits with the rule of two is "Any master who instructs more than one apprentice in the ways of the dark side is a fool. In time, the apprentices will unite their strengths and overthrow the master. It is inevitable; axiomatic. That is why each Master must have only one student." This was something bane already agreed with. Also note Revan says "EACH MASTER" revan had no problem with their being multiple masters which of cause is completely against the rule of two and still leaves the same problem a master with multiple apprentices has. If their are multiple masters some will be dominant over other and the weaker masters will work together to kill the more powerful ones. The only way to stop this apart form the rule of two is to make all masters equal and thats just the brotherhood of darkness which was of cause a complete failure. Revan makes no mention of any of the following major parts of the rule of two 1) Only allowing one master at a time. 2) Hiding and destroying the Jedi and republic from the shadows. 3) Teaching an apprentice everything you know. 4) Allowing that apprentice to one day challenge the master to determine who is worthy of the master title.

Even though the Rule of Two has its strengths especially from a philosophical standpoint I feel like there are several practical flaws like what happens if they both end up dying? or if a Master is constantly holding back dark side information from their apprentice how does the knowledge gets passed down and how does the Sith line become stronger? you're essentially pinning the entire group on the success or failure of two people constantly I think a better solution would be to have the strongest two Sith rule as Master and Apprentice and then have Sith Trainers who would train assassins warriors and other Sith force users but their knowledge of the Dark Side would be limited by the two rulers at top and then when one of the rulers died the next strongest among the SIth would take over so Sith would constantly strive to be stronger in order to become the rulers if both rulers died at once then simply the next 2 strongest Sith make their claim as the rulers and are free to learn higher mysterious of the darkside

Yes there are several flaws with the Ro2, the selfish master undermining the apprentice, or coming up with multiple apprentices (Tenebrous and Palpatine´s cases mainly) being the worst cases, since it sabotages the potential for the apprentice to fulfill his/her full potential in the dark side as a sith master, so the Ro2 requires a good chunk of selflessness with the sith master, so it can work

Awesome video a always! This was really interesting. So how does Darth Bane's Rule of One compare to Darth Krayt's Rule of One? I think the Old Republic era was when the Sith were at there strongest. Because the Sith Emperor always had people around him to keep him from becoming complacent, and he came extremely close to achieving his goal of being able to manipulate life itself. I remember reading that section in the first Darth Bane and hadn't given it much thought. I personally love the rule of two because for me the hiding and manipulation from the shadows is cooler than invasion is. Plus fewer darksiders actually makes them seem more deadly and mysterious. If Bane did proceed with his rule of one, that would mean it would be him the whole time and Bane is the purest Sith in many ways in that personal ambition while there was never his goal it was the idea that Sith ideology is the best and it most happen even if he must die, something Plagueis, Sidious and Vader never accepted. So if Bane decides he is the only one this might be good for the Sith in that he is willing to do everything he can for as he sees it the greater good of the Galaxy and now he must find a way to live forever (probably essence transference into clone bodies) this would work as a long as Bane was able to keep himself sharp over the hundred of years it would take to make his goals succeed. Though over that many years his ambitions and beliefs may change and he could falter. Rule of two is still the best but would be curious in an alternative time line how Bane lived through that time.

The Rule of Two is a excellent compromise between practicality and Sith philosophy, making it the superior choice. The Rule of One - be it the interpretation of Darth Bane or Darth Krayt - removes conflict, which is meant to strengthen the Sith, and thus contradicts their core beliefs.

Hey SWReading Club.. .. another good analysis!.. The Sith never would've got their shit together. Rule of 1 or 20... Feel me?.. too much infighting.. whether from one master & apprentice or otherwise... The nature of the Dark side has too many holes for unification, disipline, order, etc... Even with a rule of one, eventually someone would raise up. Either a Jedi or another darkside user to take the one master out... Now the rule of 2 was the best invention for the Sith for it offered the most organized discipline for the Sith: "there should be two: no more no less. One to embody the power, the other to crave it".. but as we've seen, even that ain't full proof because of fools plotting behind each other's back & secret 3rd apprentices getting taught.. .. . . The Sith were doomed from their very inception.. dig?.. ...

I just wonder how Yoda could know about the rule of two? It's not like the Sith put it in a news paper, the Jedi order thought the Sith was extinct for a thousand years. In the film it make sense to further the story without interrupting the flow of the movie, but otherwise, it make absolutely no sense that Yoda know the rules of a secret organisation everyone is convinced was extinct before Yoda was even born (or hatched, or grown or however his spieces procreate).

There is a theory that Bane actually did release certain information about the Sith, and encouraged successors to do so as well. Some of it real, some of it fake. The point was to both throw the Jedi off and more importantly, have some real information out there in case both Sith died somehow. Then at least, a new Sith in the future would have something to go on.

Personally i like revan and vitiates sith order the best, with some aspects of the brotherhood sound appealing. With rule of 2 its miracle that neither apprentice or master killed each other at same time or sith master becoming so old that couldnt teach an apprentice

Rule of 2 is best but instead of sending out the sith apprentice with limited knowledge of his/her or its full powers available & actual plans of whats going on the master should go out and deal things personally to show the apprentices what is available to them. It shows weakness to me for a master to just stand around pointing fingers, telling stories, & showing apprentices what they want them to know. Maybe rule of 3 with 2 masters (1 warrior + 1 strategic command) & 1 apprentice would help. That way the master (warrior) & apprentice can go cause havoc with the other master can strategically plan how to take over the universe.... Plus if the master warrior gets killed there would be 1 left to start over but who knows what is best for the sith, rule of 1,2,100 never worked for them anyway...
