Technically destroying an uninhabited planet and broadcasting it to the entire Empire could have achieved a similar effect without the downside of strengthening the resistance to the same degree as the destruction of Alderaan did

Let me add some additional input. A lot of commentators describe the death stars use as a galactic terror weapon, meant to keep the galaxy in line. However, the Death Star fails in this, great terror weapons feed one hope....Kill one, scare a thousand, let them believe that they narrowly escaped death, let them believe, even if a vice closes around their throat, that they MIGHT escape and live. In this, the fear of death will drive them, but the hope for life will keep them in line. Using a weapon of absolute destruction will give the opposite affect, "If Im going to die anyway, I might as well resist, if they will kill my family no matter what I do, I have nothing to lose" Omnicidal weapons give grad desperate courage to survivors, by taking away their hope, you take away their leash to self preservation. It also ruins your reputation, tyrants who rule by fear need people to constantly be in fear of "What could they possibly do next?" The tyrant wants their people to imagine all the ways a horrible situation could be much. much. MUCH worse, in order to keep people in line. When a Despot does play their hand, they lose that power, when she does the worst possible thing she could do, the fear of the unknown, the ultimate fear, is lost in the masses. The Death Star was a visionary project, but it was driven by laziness, Palpatine was getting bored by humdrum of keeping the peace through fear the old fashioned way with elbow grease, so he sought to outscource terror to technology, not a good idea. As vader said "Your Technological terror, is nothing compared to the power of the force"

Another thing Bane would have disliked Sidious for doing was keeping Vader around and/or for not allowing him to reach his full potential. To Bane it was absolute paramount that the master eventually becomes expendable to the Apprentice, allowing the Sith to get stronger with each generation. What did Sidious do to Vader? He put him in a suit that encumbered him, and that was easily destroyed by Sith lightning. The more I think about it the more it's clear to me that Sidious only lost because he disregarded Bane's plan and philosophy once he was in a position of absolute power.

Spoilers for the book Darth Plagueis ahead, but also pertinent to Sidious keeping Vader around in a weakened state. . . . . . . I actually just finished the Darth Plagueis book, and I realize now that Sidious set aside the Rule of Two as it was because the Grand Plan had finally been completed; the Sith ruled the galaxy, to his knowledge the Jedi had been wiped out. There was no more need to make the Order stronger. Now it was just for him to rule. According to Palpatine in the Prequel Trilogy, Plagueis taught everything he knew about manipulating Midiclorians to his apprentice (Sidious) to sustain life eternal, so Palpatine, presumably, could rule forever. BUT, Plagueis also had set aside Bane's Rule of Two, believing the two of them would rule the Galaxy together forever, with Palpatine ruling the "profane" realm with his expertise in politics, while Plagueis ruled the Force realm with his power over the Dark Side. Sidious secretly despised this idea, and still held to Bane's Rule of Two for the time, and slew his Master (albeit in a way that would make Bane slap him silly). Sidious obviously didn't want his apprentice to be any real threat to him and thus do the same thing..... thus the suit vulnerable to electrical damage.

But destroying Alderaan is tantamount to an economic suicide and considering the fact that the Galaxy faced a prolonged war after which plenty of resources were spent into making a superweapon, it really needed core worlds like Alderaan to be fully functional. If they weren't, they would cripple the planets that rely on Alderaan as either a port, a market or perhaps directly a consumer. Alderaan could have potentially been and maybe had been a trading centre where the empire could acquire resources from third party organisations at feasible prices due to this port. That doesn't even include Alderaan's own influence over the Galaxy. Palpatine would have to kiss goodbye to any of the outer rim planets that relied on Alderaan for trade and they would definitely work independently. The death star can only target so many planets at a time but all those planets had Alderaan to support their economy.

It was a tactical mistake to be sure. The empire really gained nothing in destroying a pacifistic planet. Sure Alderaan spoke out against the Empire and resisted it's rule but they were very unlikely to every lift a finger to do anything about it. Using the Death star just told the galaxy what the thing could do, it was a more fearful weapon when it was a mystery. Not to mention if the Rebels didn't know it's full capability they might of tried to stay and fight against it with conventional ships, thinking it was just some kind of super large carrier or the like. Kind of seems like if the secrete wasn't blown it could of acted as a great trap against a military target. A first strike the rebels likely would of never recovered from.

I agree that Darth Bane would not have destroyed Alderaan but I contend neither would Darth Sidious since he was wise enough to follow Darth Bane's advice. I contend that Tarkin destroyed Alderaan on his own initiative. I sense that Tarken would consider this action as just a tactical decision to demonstrate his power as well as the Death Star's power. I also contend that the Death Star was to keep the military in line as well as the rest of the galaxy. As a true sith, Darth Sidious would always be looking out for any mutiny in the military as he would be looking out for his apprentice to overthrow him. The Death Star would be Darth Sidious' way of controlling the military despite Thrawn's advice and I suspect Tarkin knew this. Therefore, Tarken demonstrated to his military rivals that he would not hesitate to eliminate them one way or another the same as Darth Sidious would not hesitate to destroy any rivals. Thus Tarkin would feel he is firmly established as no. 2 in the galaxy. Please note that I believe this scenario holds true whether or not Tarkin, knew Emperor Palpatine was Darth Sidious. Even if Tarkin thought Emperor Palpatine was just another evil emperor, Tarkin would see the political advantage to being commander of the Death Star and no. 2 in the galaxy.

very interesting content, what about Snoke, is he more like Bane or Sidious? in Snoke's case, destroying the Republic was smart, now every aspect of the war except Leia and Luke are his puppets, he's actually wanting the Resistance to fear the First Order so they could destroy each other one war so he could takeover and destroy everything that remains
@Nemoticon
@Nemoticon 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think Snoke is like either... but to play game, he's more like Sidious not because they share more in common, but because Snoke couldn't be more different to Bane. Bane was not ego-maniacal but driven, not emotional but pragmatic. Also, Bane achieved more than any other Sith before or after his time. Everything the Sith tried but failed at before, Bane succeeded at and everything the Sith achieved after, is because of Bane. He's not the most powerful or the most deadly, but he is certainly one of the smartest and definitely the most single minded. Bane didn't waste his time with conquering individuals, he just made shit happen by going out there and getting his hands dirty.

Bane would have had to destroy Alderaan as well. Bane instituted the Rule of Two which was perfectly fine; right up until the Two Sith ruled the Galaxy. At which point, the ONLY way to maintain power, would be to rule through fear. Additionally, Sidious had the Death Star built because he sensed a great threat from the Unknown Regions.

I think the sight of the Death Star alone could’ve inspired the fear Sidious was aiming for. Imagine seeing something the size of a small moon suddenly appearing in the skies of your home world and then realizing it’s man made. You have no idea why it’s there or what something that size is capable of. All that alone would make any normal person afraid of causing any problems.

Knowing Darth Bane and is absolutely loathsome hatred for the hutts he would probably demonstrate the death-stars power by wiping out their planet of nal-hutta lol that way he could pitch what he did to the rest of the Galaxy as a necessary evil to rid the galaxy of the hutts and have his cake and eat it too.

I've always thought that, Sidious, while yes a Sith, kind of got lost a bit in the politics of the galaxy and "being Sith" got lost somewhere along the way and becoming Emperor became more important, though, of course never losing the whole "Destroy the Jedi" thing. I believe even that was secondary and only part of the big picture of taking control of the Republic and becoming Emperor.

i cant remember where i heard it, but i remember hearing that palpatine was as shocked as everyone else when he heard about the destruction of alderan. the death star was as far as i can see a symbol and a deterrent more then an actual practical weapon. at the very least it was never meant to be used on such an old, prestigious and economically and culturally important world as alderan. as far as i know it was tarkin who gave the order without consulting palpatine.

paulsan2112 not true, there is A huge difference between fear and rage, this sparked the latter more then the former. now if they had solid evidence that alderaan was supporting the rebellion (they were but they hid it well) it may have been different, even then it would be shaky ground. this was an old planet that (in legends at least) was considered the cultural centre of the galaxy, it was the same as firing at corucant or corellia. i do agree it had a real chance of working if the empire had won at yavin but why take the risk? tarkin was a good military leader that understood what a strong military could be used for, but it seems he had no understanding of how public opinion works. palpatine did, its why he was so shocked.

It wouldn't make sense if he didn't know or approve it. For one it would be out of character for Tarkin who wouldn't undermine the emperor like that, he's too much of a professional at what he does, sticking closely to rules and regulations since he believes so much in keeping order. As well as, if Sidious didn't know he would have him removed from the Death Star before he had a chance to get to Yavin, leaving Vader in charge.

I also believe that palpatine also felt like he'd obtained the goal sith had sought so long and fought so hard for and now all he had left was to learn and control, but we are starting to hear there are things that even a sith lord had to be wary of in unknown space, but yes also arrogance that the journey was complete and he wouldn't still need to fight just as hard to keep control of it, as he did to obtain it. Imagine if the deathstar hadn't been used on a populated planet like that but the news of the Yuzhaan Vong even if the current canon regards it as lies, just telling the universe you've built this massive navy and huge battle station because you have reports of a race who will inflict much more destruction on the galaxy than the clone wars did, it would've delayed the rebel alliance becoming the solid group it did and maybe kept the galaxy at peace for another decade depending on what happened from then.

Sidious didn't destroy Alderan. It was Tarkins decision which caused much grief for Palpatine afterward. Public riots and tons of recruits for the Rebellion. Sidious wasn't one to waste resources like this. He simply wanted a weapon of terror to solidify his rule and in case the force ever decided to strike back as a result of his life manipulation experiments.

I was under the impression that the Emperor didn't know that Alderaan was to be destroyed and that he himself was shocked upon hearing the new of its destruction. You made an error: Sidious did not destroy Alderaan, not personally anyways. Tarkin was the one that did it, and he did it cause he wanted to show that the Empire would make no exceptions; not discriminate. Sidious however was incredibly furious about the destruction of Alderaan, not only because it worked as a Lightning Rod for the Resistance, but also because it was considered one of the "Jewels of the Empire", a world that had mostly nobles & aristocrats, what made up the majority of the Empire's officers and admirals. Tarkin, as you said in another video, works by a code of "no nonsense" and politics is basically nonsense to Tarkin, but is what helped Sidious succeed. Politics was not Tarkin's way, it was however Sidious' way, and he was deeply against this action. Thing is though... This would actually fit Bane's philosophy as the destruction of Alderaan would serve a purpose, it just wasn't what Tarkin expected, and I doubt Bane could've foreseen that his lineage would have succeeded in conquering the Republic & the Jedi with primarily politics rather than destroying both outright.

Ben Lewitt Not at all. When he destroyed human planet in the humancentric empire where everyone else was inferior and the entire rulling class was made up of humans, he created the perfect PR for the Rebelion. Since when not even humans are safe in Palpatine's regime, what of non-humans? And don't forget that most of Alderaan's two biillion inhabitants just wanted to live their lives without political agenda. Applying collective guilt would only cause more dissent. And of course it did.

But is the destruction of Alderaan not heeding the lesson of "execute one, terrify one thousand" on a galactic scale? Alderaan wasn't senseless slaughter for the sake of being evil, it was a demonstration of terror. If the Death Star were truly as invulnerable as Sidious and Tarkin believed, it would have worked. The problem was their overconfidence.
