Good insight and David is truly inspiring. Just one remark, when someone drowns on a frozen lake and recover later there is no freezing involved and therefore no ice crystals causing cell damage. That's one of the main problems in the current cryopreservation techniques. What we could learn from his amazing physiology may someday help develop stasis technology for keeping patients in stable conditions during transport or in the operation table or even trough long space travels. We go deep on JRE 🙂

So, in anesthesia school right now, and we use similar principles. When we're about to put a person under and place a breathing device, we pre-oxygenate with 100% in until they're breathing at least 80% oxygen out. If they're a healthy adult, that gives us about 8-9 minutes of the patient not breathing at all of buffer time before their oxygen levels start dropping to a concerning level.

The “trick” is it’s a pure oxygen breath hold meaning they inhale pure o2 before the attempt making it much easier. The world record currently for pure o2 hold is 24:37 and normal o2 is 11:34. So David could probably do a 8:30 hold on normal o2

Inhale fully through the nose and exhale slowly, repeat 30 times, after 30 expel all oxygen from your lungs and hold it as long you can, then take huge breath in and hold that for 15 seconds. Yeah, a lot of people don’t consider that chokeholds block the carotid artery, meaning that oxygenated BLOOD will not reach the brain. That will put someone out very quick, no matter how long they can hold their breath (because blood is still able to flow). Then again, maybe we are all being too literal about your fun comment and need to just enjoy the humor that you have presented. :)

David Blaine was on a swim team and learned to held his breath to beat everyone on his swim team. This develops as he sets numerous world records of holding his breath for close to 20 min. Crazy that this is possible with training

Blaine seems very energetic in all these videos. He talks fast, smiles a lot,, he seem excited. I have never seen him talk this fast in any interview.

The breath purging that David is talking about seems similar to the Wim Hof method.

A group discovered Special Operators 1st Class (SEAL) Brett Marihugh, 34, and Seth Lewis, 32, at the bottom of the pool at the Naval Special Warfare Group 2 Combat Swimmer Training Facility at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia. Virginia medical examiners ruled their drownings accidental, but a command investigation reveals evidence of a dangerous, prohibited contest that cost their lives.
