I got choked up when you got to the part about being offered that tape to borrow, and then several more times throughout the video. Depeche Mode is undoubtedly one of the top 5 influences on my own musical journey, and I can't begin to describe how profound their impact was, and remains to this day. I was very blessed to have been exposed to them from the very earliest days, and as I grew into and eventually out of my teens, they were my constant companion and mentor from afar. I lived for the day each new album would hit the shelves and then I'd wear them out. Studiously dissecting each song and hanging on every word. I got to see them so many times, on so many tours... but nothing, and I mean NOTHING will ever compare to being one of those incredibly fortunate fans in attendance that June 18th, 1988 in Pasadena California. That day, that weekend spent with dear friends is a memory with no equal. Everything about it was amazing. It marked a very obvious watershed moment in both my life as a musician and as a human being. Words can't express how profound it was or how grateful I am. Thank you so much for this video. It's exactly what I needed today and it affected me on so many poignant levels. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm pretty new to your channel but I hit subscribe on the first video of yours I saw and have greatly enjoyed each one since. You are indeed, the Professor.

Living in Los Angeles in the 80's one could see how U2 became big enough to headline stadiums but Depeche Mode & The Cure did it as well and it was due to their sincerity as bands. They did it their way ! 2 passionate bands. Deserving of their status which still holds in 2020.

I have no idea how this got recommended to me but im so glad bc depeche mode is such a huge and important part of my life and my development. My dad grew up as a teenager in los angeles in the 80s and my mom did too but in mexico. Both of my parents introduced me to depeche mode. My earliest memory of depeche mode is just can’t get enough playing in the car radio as my parents drove me to pre-kindergarten. I was silent and shocked because i couldn’t believe the colors i was hearing. My happiest childhood memories was me dancing to depeche mode music in the house with my mom and singing their songs with both parents. I could write so much more but my point is, i am forever grateful to this band. I might be only 21 but my kids are going to KNOW DM the way i have grown up with them and constantly continue to listen and learn from them

I love your viewpoint! I will argue till the cow's come home with you on the top 5. Number 5 is "Just can't get enough" 4 is "Personal Jesus", 3 is "Strangelove" 2 is "Stripped" and number one is easy - "Everything Counts" the live version from 101. I have seen Depeche Mode 9 times in concert. 3 times they finished with Everything Counts and couldn't have picked a better song to end with. I moved from Utah to Louisianna in 1985 and they were already my favorite band. When I went to my new school in Denham Springs no one had ever heard of Depeche Mode. I was shocked, but I was able to introduce a lot of people to this great band. Still love your show and I will continue to watch them all.

I grew up in western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh in the late 80's (graduated in 89). The music scene there was your typical top 40 pop, hair metal, classic rock and basically nothing else. I never even heard of Depeche Mode until I was in the Navy. I was on a nuclear submarine at the time out to sea and I was on cranking duties (food service), we had this cook who used to play the Violator album over and over, at first I found their music intriguing, because it was so different from what I was used to listening to. I eventually fell in love with their sound and as soon as I got into port I purchased my own copy of Violator. For a few months Violator was the only music I knew from them, but that changed quickly when I started to hit the clubs. I was at the club one night and Strange love (hijack remix) came on, I instantly knew by the vocals that this was a Depeche Mode tune, I was excited that the next day I went out and purchased Music for the Masses, I was freaking blown away with the album. Needless to say this provoked me to pick up their entire catalog of albums and I have been a fan ever since. Enjoy the Silence will forever be my favorite song from Depeche Mode, its the song that introduced me to them, followed closely by Nothing, which I think has a quintessential Depeche Mode sound. I really couldn't pick a top 5 because it all depends on my mood and DM are the masters touching us deeply inside.

curt murray I grew up near Pittsburgh too. Graduated in 87. Pittsburgh had a new wave station in the early 80’s WXXP. That was about the only station I listened to. They played a lot of The Cure, U2, Depeche Mode and also punk. Sadly they went off the air shortly after I graduated. I miss that channel.

22 years for me. Thought it was garbage on the 90s. I was an underground hip hop head. Then got into electronic stuff. Dnb, jungle, etc.. Then house.. Then got into indie rock, rock, metal.. Then 80s... All of the suff my older sister listened to, I hated... By the early 00s, I got it. Finally then got into ladytron, etc.. My music palate is huge now... Depeche is my top 5 of all time now... They are legends.

Pimpf I also was first introduced the DM with People Are People, but REALLY didn't get into them until years later. I actually can't remember when I got totally hooked, but it may have been with the Violator album. I ended up getting every DM album I could get after that and have gotten every one since then. I think the magic of DM is that...the synth is a powerful tool. It was kind of like the pro tools of "music playing" at the time. Many bands used the synth to bring "feelings" and score hits, but did not focus much on actual song writing or passion. DM didn't let the synth take over the music (hence some of lyrics you mentioned here). They raised the power of their already powerful lyrics and music by ADDING the synth. Big, Big Difference!!! IMO

The Prof sends us into orbit with his prose on DM! Truth is, I never understood or appreciated them until recently. David's "All of This and Nothing" popped up for me on youtube and well, I said, "Who the heck is this?" His phrasing and how the words flow from him- every nuance is incredible. From there I revisited the Depeche Mode, and e listened to all the stuff I heard in the 80's but ignored. I think it is the reductionist look and feel they presented that threw me off. I expected musical instruments for a real band not electronics etc. I have the GREATEST respect for David and Martin!!

You're dead right on how great David Gahan is. I saw them live at the Barclay's in June of 2018 before I left New York. They were perfection. Dave held us in the palm of his hand and each song was larger than life. I was SO HAPPY that they did my favorite Depeche Mode song, "Walking In My Shoes." The amazing thing is they still make good music. No band that's 40 years old should be able to do that. (Fully agree with "A Question of Lust" being top 5 80s DM, by the way)

In 1981 I was a H.S. senior here on Long Island , NY. We had our local iconic radio station WLIR playing the “first wave” music of the day and introducing us to great bands like DMode. I believe I heard “Just can’t get Enough” first and have been a lifelong fan ever since. I saw them on the Global Spirit tour at Madison Square Garden. The show was on a Saturday night .Spent the day in NYC bars with friends and then proceeded to have the greatest concert experience of my 55 years. There is a film about the tour and what DM has meant to a small group of fans. “Spirits in the Forest” , check it out if you haven’t already. Also have a look at “Dare To Be Different- The story of WLIR”. It’s a cool little documentary about our beloved radio station and features DM and other artists of the new wave era. Program director Dennis McNamara tells a fun story about the day Depeche Mode came to the station as well. I can’t pick a top 5 But I can say that the live version of “Precious “ from Touring the Angel absolutely cuts me in half to listen to. It came out as my marriage was falling apart and I guess it hits too close for me. That’s the beauty of this band ,they write with a purity that reaches people in different ways. That being said , the very first song I heard , perhaps their most upbeat song , will forever describe how I feel about these guys. I Just can’t get enough.

I'm hooked on your videos! Great insight and a true passion for music. I didn't get into DM until I joined the Army in 1989. I knew who they were but their "poppy" hits just didn't do it for me. I was more of a rocker/metal guy. Anyways, in boot camp, we weren't allowed to listen to music but a few of the guys were really creative about hiding their Walkmans and one guy lent me his. Since I didn't have a cassette of my own I just listened to what was already in there. It was a mixed tape and the first song that played was "Shake the Disease." I was sucked right in. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was as honest as it was dark and I felt connected to the song in a way I hadn't felt with any band before. This led me to going back through their older releases and realizing how much I'd already missed. Amazing group, for sure.

Thank you!! What an amazing commentary on the influence DM has had on you and the world. Your sentiments and experiences are mirrored with mine! DM is ingrained on my soul. There isn't an phase of my life that hasn't had a song or album as it's soundtrack. I can't even imagine my world without their music I first heard DM in 1984. It was Stories of Old from Some Great Reward. I was 9 years old & pressing my ears against my godmother's daughters head to hear the music from her headphones. She let me listen to one song... and that was all it took. I was a small town farm girl, who only got 2 pop music channels on her radio, and definitely would never have heard anything from them if it hadn't been for Michelle, the cooler, older, city girl who was forced to hang out with a 9 year old on a vacation. I begged & drove my mother crazy, asking for the album. I wound up getting it for my birthday a couple weeks later. People tried to make fun of me for listening to them, from Elementary school, all the way through high school; but I did not care. I knew what I'd found.....funny how those people now claim to have been fans all along... (mmmhmmmm) I know now that I didn't truly understand some of the lyrics (puberty was a long way off there)...but the MUSIC itself then was what touched me.. as an adult.. the words mean so much more, and I understand it on such a different level I never got to see them in concert until 2001, and promised myself, I would never miss another show. Since then, I haven't missed a Toronto show, and have actually seen them twice in California.. one at the Hollywood Bowl, which was a dream come true for both DM and seeing a show at that venue. (2017). They are my son's first concert... He was 12, and my friend backed out of attending with me, so I took him.. He LOVED it and still talks about it to this day (he's 21 now) I have a very hard time picking top 5 or even top 10... they seem to rotate depending on my mood or what's happening in my life.. But right now, this month..... it's Enjoy the Silence, I Want you Now, Home, I Feel You, Never Let me Down Again.

I enjoyed listening to how well you talk about Depeche Mode. I've been a fan since the beginning,as the years go by and I watch the guys evolve from album to album. I'm proud of their evolution and their library of music. Listening to back in the 80's, when I was in my 20's, I never thought they would be the legends they are now. I thought they would disappear like many bands of the 80's era. But I was wrong,'Violator' came out and then 'Songs of Faith and Devotion' and then "Ultra" and so and so on. I realize that Depeche Mode was serious about their music and just wasn't in it to make a few hits, make some money and then vanish. No, they're running a marathon, not a sprint! Now I'm well into my 50's and I still listen to them and in awe of their musical journey. I've only seen them preform live once and that was many years ago. I wish I could see them one more time before they call it quits. I lift my glass and toast with much love and respect for Depeche Mode. To the gentlemen who has left legacy of music and has entertain many people around the world. Gentlemen, I salute you!🥂

Beautiful tribute to the greatest band of all time. I too love all types of music but DM has resided in my heart for over 30 years. (I PRAY for another tour when this pandemic is over!) My first DM concert was at the Rose Bowl. I was only 14 but knew I was witnessing something incredible / spiritual. Live shows are second to none. I remember the first time I heard Depeche Mode was when I saw the video for People Are People on a UHF channel here in NYC that played music videos called U68. I don't remember being hooked on them at that point. I thought it was a nice song and that was that. It wasn't until I got into High School when I was expanding my musical tastes and started listening to the Cure, Siouxie & The Banshees, The B-52's when a friend, who I wish I could remember his name, offered to lend me Music For The Masses. When the opening guitar cords of Never Let Me Down Again filled my headphones, I knew I was hooked for good. I must have played that tape a hundred times in the 2 weeks I had it. I then went out & bought my own cassette as well as Black Celebration, Speak & Spell, People Are People & Catching Up & I was hooked & still am to this day. After the Beatles, Depeche Mode is my favorite band.

I love your story of how you discovered DM! I had similar experiences of being a nerdy outcast 7th grader when I heard Everything Counts at a school disco in 1984, and I just knew that this was the band for me. I had to know everything about them and had to collect all their albums. They became the soundtrack and comfort of the most difficult time in my life, and I still carry them close to my heart. My top 5 would be Black celebration, Never let me down again, Blasphemous rumors, Enjoy the silence and of course Everything counts. Thank you for a great video!

A critic once made a valid point that their “Music for the Masses” should’ve been their worldwide success, hence the name. They knew the right songs were there. But in an era of MTV, in which videos helped make bands like Duran Duran seem almost as big as U2, Depeche Mode’s videos were not filmed as commercially acceptable, and may have held them back. Not sure, but it makes sense. A lot bands with lesser talent from the same genre had bigger hits with worse songs, but catchy videos. In any event, I’m glad friends turned me on to Long Islands WLIR in the early 80’s, (the little indie station that Bono said helped launch U2), because I loved DM and didn’t a miss any of the classics between Just Can’t Get Enough and Behind the Wheel - Stripped, Question of Lust, Everything Counts, Blasphemous Rumours, See You, New Life, Shake the Disease, Master and Servant - damn, there are so many. And in addition to the many Violator hits mentioned in other comments, “It’s No Good” is one of their best.

Jason Miradoli Music For the Masses was chosen as a title to be ironic and funny. It wasn’t intended to be literal. They continued to use titles like Violator, Ultra and Exciter because they thought it sounded like it belonged on a heavy metal album. It was tongue in cheek.

I slept out for tickets for two nights for what became a sold-out-in-20-minutes show. I skipped my high school graduation to go see them during the World Violation tour in Montreal in June 1990. Easily the best decision and one of the most unforgettable nights of my life. We even managed to meet Martin and Fletch outside of the hotel afterwards and partied with them at a local club. A few weeks later, we drive down to Pittsburgh for the show and managed to do the same thing again. Dave remembered me and called me as “hey, it’s our little friend”. Words just can’t express what this band and their music means to me and how much I love them. While all I have as souvenirs are a few snapshots with Martin and I and whatever I could buy at the concert venue, this video brings back so many wonderful memories and feelings and reminder of why I love DM so much so thank you for uploading this.

Professor: For the very first time in my 48 yrs I listen to somebody to talk about DM, my lfe band, with the passion and sincerity for the music contribution of DepecheMode. A band which knew how to evolved and explored ot only sounds, music, lyrics... but feelings! I was so touch to their music as long as their lyrics.. masterpiece after masterpiece.. DM always knew how to express what they wanted.. so unconventional.. with problems.. and departures as in a family as in a bunch of truly friends who knew how stay together until each had to take its own way.. as Clark wanted to do synth pop music.. or as Wilder wanted more darker and less commercial music.. Depeche Mode was and is, still that pinnacle of what really music is ment to be.. TRANSMIT feelings.. emotions.. DM I heard of them in the school 1984 This album Speak & Spell.. song such.. Photograpic, Big Muff, Tora Tora Tora, Dreaming of Me... and of course.. New Life.. brought me into Post Punk, New Romantic.. and New Wave.. and more than 35 yrs later I still listen to them.. did see them twice in my country.. and have almost all their cds.. Just for this discovering... I studied piano and become keyboardist! Start reading KEYBOARD MAG and "devouring" every aspect around Synth world and DM world... Of course came just following Human League, Ultravox, Alphaville, Cammouflage, Red Flag, and so many others.. But DM is by far.. the band of my life.. every song, in its moment, was like an artist painting the story of my life... thanks for the video.. I feel just the same.. and I am so agreed with every word beig said. Thank you, I suscribe of course. Txs Greetings.

OMD's first album is truly Post-Punk(waaaay more than Speak & Spell)... using only a mono synth with rhythm, a bass guitar and vox....the perfect recipe. My fave DM track to this day(fan since '81) is the B-Side 'Shout'....Daniel Miller and Vince created the most futuristic percussive sequence using Daniel's ARP 2600 synthesizer.....along with that underlying disonant pad/drone. It's still forty years ahead of it's time.

When I was 10, I was watching the superbowl with my brother, one of the tv commercials played Personal Jesus (the part where only synthethizers and keyboard play) then the tv commercial endep up with a powerful "reach out and touch faith and the electric synth notes." I was shocked, the most amazing music I´d heard in my short life, I asked my brother who were they, he said something like "bla-bla mode" and warned me that might not be an appropiate band for such a fool kid like me...from there and 30 years later, my number one and favorite band is still DM, have all their albums and listen to them every night before sleeping.

I was 13 when "Black Celebration" fell into my lap at a garage sale, almost literally. I had already gone from a sheltered kid who LITERALLY only listened to classical and oldies, to consuming every early punk album I could find only a little over a year before, but this broke my "I'm NEVER going to be mainstream" bs in half. Slowly, I opened up to other artists. By the time I got "Violator" from Columbia House Records And Tapes, I realized that I couldn't give an f about cliques or clubs or anything. Music was all I had and all I am. I can thank DM for liberating me from that bs.

Love your channel and especially this episode! Depeche Mode songs from 1984’s Some Great Reward are among my earliest memories. My father had a small collection of progressive music, including artists such as Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, and the Art of Noise, all creating intriguing soundscapes unlike anything I heard on the radio or in other settings. Still, Dave Gahan’s rich baritone and Martin Gore’s vulnerable tenor layered over their synthetic melodies affected me like no other artist did. The album’s cover art, placing a bride and groom within a starkly lit, nighttime industrial setting, fascinated me as my eight-year-old mind grappled with the album's lyrics (still a mystery at that point, although I had an intuition that it the songs were about something deep and powerful). Then, the band's first singles collection, Catching Up with Depeche Mode, appeared in Dad’s collection, and for the first time, I saw a small hand-colored photograph of the four faces behind the music, compressed into a small cassette cover. Then, I saw my best friend’s older brother in a DM concert shirt and caught another look at the band, and their increasing airplay on my local college radio further piqued my interest. While is difficult to determine exactly what triggered the deep dive, around 1989, by age eleven, I was obsessed.

You expressed how DM Fans feel about them BEAUTIFULLY through words....WOW!! The first song I heard was "People Are People" in 1984, when I was 14 and snuck out to go downtown to an underage dance club in Portland, Oregon. They played music that I had never heard before and I was absolutely HOOKED and proceeded to spend every weekend there. My first 12" vinyls were "People Are People" and New Order "Blue Monday". Up until just a couple of years ago, all I listened to was new wave 80's music, DM always being on heavy rotation, as I was convinced that no one made good music like that anymore. I've since found that to be untrue, but I was definitely stuck in the 80's and DM Universe for a very long time. I will be 50 this year, and DM has and will forever be my favorite hands down. I've attached a link to a video of a VERY COOL Family that expresses how much they love DM by song...by doing DM covers and they are PHENOMENAL! This is just one (my favorite) of their several DM covers. I'm sure most DM fans have come across them, but if you haven't....you are in for a TREAT....and you will be blown away! kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5Clonlrm5Wij5I My Top 5 (and BOY...was this hard to narrow down!!) 1. Just stumbled onto your channel by this post. Great video, and I too, share a similar experience upon first hearing DM's music. As a young kid, I can vividly recall hearing People Are People on KROQ for the first time in 1984, and it was unlike anything else before that. Sonically, DM are worlds apart from many other bands. Growing up in Southern California, DM were huge, and many people loved them...they were a big part of my formative years. I fondly recall the release of Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion. I was too young to attend any of the World Violation tour performances, however, I attended three concerts on the Devotional tour (1993-4). Amazing performances! My last DM album purchase was Ultra. in the post-Alan Wilder era, they just are not the same. Perhaps age changed the band..or me. It's just not the same....and I moved on. But that era, and their music will live on forever, and that was a glorious era!

Great video! I enjoyed hearing your story! My first experience with DM was with New Life. It was new and intersting! And then again with Just Can't Get Enough (which is still a club standard in some SF Clubs!!) and they had me!! I also remember the first time hearing People Are People and I knew I had to hear more DM! Everything Counts, Pipeline and Told You So were so relevant, and remain so, even today! Even New Dress is just as relevant today, as it was when it was released! Not to mention the album Some Great Reward where almost every track was a song that I felt compelled to learn by heart! Music for the Masses was just warming up for their next album Violator, which will be counted for the 90s since it came out in 1990. DM is truly a great band, and even today (at least as of 2017) are still making relevant music with emotional and musical depth that remains at the cutting edge of music!! Top 5: Just Can't Get Enough, People are People, Strangelove, Everything Counts, and finally Master and Servant/Blasphemous Rumors/Somebody (Tied)

Back in 1981, when i bought speak & spell. It was very upsetting in my school. I bought everything they released after that, I ran from the bus to the record store. And yes I have a lot of synths and eurorack modules now, i´m 52. Soon the most good looking girls came to me, and wanted me to record it to tape from vinyl. No I didn’t get anything other than that they came to me, never in my parents apartement though. Just outside the door. And she was a top 10 looking girl. But nobody could take what I felt for their music away from me. I know I spelled something wrong, just got excited. Preordered many singles with DM and Yazoo, Erasure. Take care. I’m from sweden, not stockholm though. But way up north.

Thank you. Couldn’t have said it better. Similar story, somewhat. First album a friend gave me was “Some Great Reward”. He said- here, try this tape, I think you’ll like them...with that smirk on his face and almost a wink in his eye, it’s like he knew. He knew I needed them in my life. As soon as that cassette started playing I was transfixed, I couldn’t stop listening to them, it was like a drug, and I needed more. That was the summer of 87. My collection has grown immense since then, and have had the honor of meeting my favorite band on the SOFAD tour. Their autographs hang in my bedroom. As many have said, they are the soundtrack to my life. You help put into words what I’ve been trying to express for years sir, thank you!

I had a very similar experience. I ran across a guy in high school through comics book that introduced me to alternative, industrial, and rap music. I learned about Nirvana, Jesus Jones, and Nine Inch Nails before they ever became popular. He also introduced me to The Cure as well. Much like where you grew up our local music store only carried popular music, but Camelot Music in the larger mall in Charleston WV carried alternative, industrial, and other styles of music I discovered through him. My musical experience expanded incredibly thanks to him. It's funny you talked about greatest hits albums, and I actually picked up Depeche Mode The Singles. I also couldn't pass up buying their CD singles, because they did some really good remixes of their songs on them. Definitely an epic group.

Spectacular review of DM! So glad I watched this. I've only gotten to know your videos in the past few months. I've liked many episodes that highlight interesting backstories in standard rock from the 60s to the 2000s, but to this point had no idea (and wouldn't have suspected) you felt this way about Depeche Mode - my fave band thru the 80s and early 90s, and still 2nd fave band to this day. You hit on lots of key points, ideas and feelings that many DM fans obviously relate to, per the comments. They were the band that opened my eyes and ears as well. I too first encountered them via People Are People, but I was a little older (14, at church dances in '84/'85). Fortunately, my fascination took off from there well ahead of Behind the Wheel. In time, I too became less enamored by People Are People, and therein lies how and why my mind opened up. When I soon came across their back catalogue, and the rest of that album, it infuriated me that we generally never heard that stuff in the US, nor with future songs, until they hit it big with the 101 tour. I too listened to Casey Kasem every Sunday in the early to mid 80s and liked a lot of radio-friendly New Wave at the time (Duran Duran, Howard Jones, Naked Eyes, etc), despite growing up in a country & western and classic rock house. What really focused it for me was feeling frustrated when I'd discover a great song/band that was already 3, 5, 10 years old. I started asking repeatedly, "why weren't we hearing more DM?" (or New Order, The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, etc). This drove the heart of my music taste ever since - forever searching for reasonably well-liked or known great bands who were largely unknown to the general public. What our generation called "underground music" or what became known as Indie music. I've seen various ranking lists that show most DM fans vote their best album to be one of the four from Some Great Reward (1984) to Violator (1990), and is a fairly balanced percentage among those four. Original, hardcore fans usually go with Black Celebration, those who caught on in the mid or late 80s generally go with Music for the Masses, and the newer fans typically go with Violator. Some Great Reward was my first fave, and each new album after would briefly be my new fave up thru Violator. However, as DM started to wane a little in quality for SoF&D and after Wilder left, I started to hear minor flaws in Violator that preceded this - despite how seemingly flawless it is and arguably when they peaked. I began to notice where they cut corners compared to prior albums, imo. So I made my way backwards, rediscovering the beauties on MftM, Black Celebration, and ultimately decided SGR is their best album, imo, with Black Celebration as a close 2nd. SGR was the first of their greats and transcended time much better than their first 3 albums, which gives it an extra nod for me. But as you said, all their albums are tightly packed, with few weak songs, if any. Not to mention an unmatchable catalogue of comparable B-side singles and remixes. With all that said, People are People is a great track for a reason, and the 12" mix is even better, but I find it's one of the weaker tracks on SGR. And that's what I meant by being infuriated at what we weren't hearing. Nearly every song on SGR is as good as or better than People Are People. Similarly, I felt Personal Jesus was the weakest track on Violator, but the music industry and radio shoved it down our throats. To the point that moderate DM fans may not have ever sat in the dark with quality headphones on, experiencing the mesmerizing arrangements of Halo, Blue Dress and Clean, or sinking into the dark depths of Waiting for the Night. Absolute ear candy, with the kind of lyrics you described that cut to the bone. "And when I squinted, the world seemed rose-tinted, and angels appeared to descend. To my surprise, with half-closed eyes, things looked even better than when they were opened." Sung as if Gahan was having that experience in that moment. I can't do a 5'er for the 80s. Gotta do a 10 and even that's tough. Any one of the latter half could be #5 for me depending on my mood and I've left off definitive classics like Strangelove or Just Can't Get Enough, which might still barely make my top 15: 1 - Lie to Me 2 - Stripped 3 - Never Let Me Down 4 - Fly on the Windscreen 5 - Photographic 6 - Somebody 7 - Everything Counts 8 - Puppets 9 - Nothing 10 - The Sun & the Rainfall Btw, their film Strange is also notably great for the 80s. Some their best individual music videos, in the MftM era like Strangelove, arranged as almost a story. Creative and well-made, and finally just released on DVD/Bluray. I'm not a fan of their follow-up, Strange Too, based on Violator hits, which sort of highlights (to me) that they got a little too big and started to phone it in, so to speak.

I enjoyed the passion of this video. I think we are close to the same age. I already knew about "People are People" but the song that got me really interested in Depeche Mode again was "Strangelove." Something about the bass line and the vocal refrains you mentioned really cut into my teenage heart and I worshipped that song in 1987 and still do. Your top 5 of 80s DM songs is very closely aligned with mine. The "Highland Mix" of "Stripped" by Flood and the legendary 101 live version are absolutely heart stopping in their cinematic scope and greatness. And, while it probably has been mentioned below, "Everything Counts" predates the Nintendo Mario franchise by a good couple of years. Both feature major keys, and sound "Happy." Keep up the good work and I enjoyed your presentation. Long Live SYNTH POP!

Thank you for this! DM is my favorite band of all time! I first heard People are People when I was in 6th grade. I was really into it, but none of my friends were. By 8th grade, I had more friends into New Wave and we would hang out and listen to DM, The Cure, etc. At the end of 8th grade, DM's Black Celebration tour was on, and I couldn't wait to see my favorite band in the world. I was 13 and seeing them live was truly a religious experience. Thank god I grew up at a time when parents let their kids go places by themselves. I don't think seeing them with my parents would have been the same as it was with a bunch of friends. They have strangely mirrored my life in so many ways and I don't know what I would have done without them. My top 5 are: Here is the House Shouldn't Have Done That Shake the Disease Photographic Waiting for the Night It's soooo hard to pick only 5 songs when I love basically everything!

My older cousin introduced me to Depeche Mode when I was a young teen in the late 90s. I had a similar experience as you, my cousin had brought the cd of The Singles 86 98 and was listening to it with my dad. I walked into the room and was immediately transfixed. He loaned me the cd and my life changed. I can honestly say this band helped me get through my teenage years alive, their lyrics spoke directly to my soul and reflected the turmoil and angst within it. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them several times in concert. Later on when I was a young adult, a friend and I went to a small venue to see David Gahan on his Paper Monsters tour. We climbed on top of a wide railing to get a better view as he sang. He saw us, pointed at us and then emulated my wild dance moves for a few beats. That experience sent me into the stratosphere and I will forever have a place in my heart for them. Best band on the planet.

We are one of the same kind Lol! My first intro to Depeche Mode was People Are People! It's still my all time favorite Depeche Mode song! Just the end of that song still amazes me! "I CANT UNDERSTAND WHAAAAT MAKES A MAN, HATE ANOTHER MAN, HELP ME UNDERSTAND! But what Behind The Wheel, did for you, Enjoy The Silence, did for me. It was the tale end of the 80s and MTV was dominated by hair bands. Nothing against hair bands but new wave was my thing! So when the video for Enjoy The Silence came out on MTV I was in love! ❤ My all time favorite Depeche Mode album has to be Black Celebration.

I also discovered DM through “Enjoy The Silence”. I was hypnotized from the moment I heard it and even used some lyrics for a quote in my yearbook lol. From there I discovered all the gems in Violator. MTV helped me discover some earlier hits with their 2 hour alternative show “120 Minutes”. Ah those were great days!

@@bronzantilium7699 Those were the days!! Lol! Oh my gosh, 120 mintues, that is so awesome you mentioned that show! Back when MTV was music television and they showed music videos LOL! I saw some great bands on that show. I remember when they did a special on Siouxsie and the Banshees. That is my all time favorite band!! 👍 Do you remember what lyrics you used for your year book quote? Enjoy The Silence was such a big song for me! Just the beat and rhythm alone caught my attention so quickly. And that rhythmic (I dont know if it's a human voice or beat machine), but that "AH! - AH! - AH! - AH!" through out the song is soooooo amazing! And just those lyrics "All I ever wanted, all I ever needed, is here in my arms" You have the background voices singing right along with Dave Gahans voice. Such a great song, I dont even have words for it. Blue Dress would be another favorite of mine on Violator. I miss those days, I miss the 80s. There was so many great songs during that time. But there were a few that made me feel this feeling, I really cant describe what that feeling is but it's like the song comes on and it makes my mind wonder and it gives me such a great feeling. There are a few that do that for me, but the one other song that does that, is Tears For Fears 'Head Over Heels'

I would not have made it through most of my life if it weren't for DM and their songs. They have a way of making you feel like they see and feel your soul, while simultaneously revealing their souls to you. Their music is entwined in my brain through all of my memories. It's hard to pick just 5 favorite songs, but I find these are the 5 I go back to the most: 1. Sometimes, 2. Little 15, 3. Nothing's Impossible, 4. Enjoy the Silence 5. Any Second Now (Voices). But honestly, as I write those my brain screams "What about Wrong? Or Lillian? Or Where's the Revolution? Or...?" LOL, Every song is just my favorite when I hear them :)

OMG that brought tears to my eyes hearing your passion. It was hearing Personal Jesus for the first time that made me go what is that? I was hypnotised. But SOFAD was the first DM album I bought. That blew it wide open for me. I was hooked at that point, and then went backwards through their discography. They have created another reality or world with their music, that you can get lost in. Not many bands do something like that. I can think of The Cure, Pink Floyd, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, being up there.

Professor, Just recently stumbled upon your page and enjoyed this video and the channel. I grew up in Southern Ca and a huge DM fan. Your video brought me back to the year they played at the Rose Bowl and filmed 101. I was 16 years old and my older cousin got tickets and took me to the concert, as he new they were one of my favorite bands. Such an amazing concert! Opening bands were Wire, Thomas Dolby and OMD. I remember there was a big food fight...but the best part was everyone singing the chorus on Everything Counts! The ocean of flickering lighters during Somebody, as well as the rain were surreal. Thank you for stirring up a wonderful memory!
