I don't buy games with Denuvo on it, at all. In fact I charge what I consider an inconvenience fee if I have to wait for them to remove it, and bring the game to Steam or GOG from Epic. Which means I won't buy a game that inconveniences many in this way until it is under 50% of the original price. That can take years, so I typically forget the game even existed by then. Considering, many of my games I put in thousands of hours in (Elden Ring, Skyrim, Fallout, Total War, etc.), I'm not all that in a hurry to purchase new games anyway. The only game I plan to pay full price for this year is the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC coming out for Elden Ring in June. The rest I will skip for a Steam or GOG sale.

Now, mind you, it's not far from the truth, I don't play as many indie games as I'd kinda want because I don't find much interest in them. But I'm by no means against them. As far as "what you're missing out on", I can't say for certain because I know nothing about you But games like BG3, Zelda games, god of war 2018/Ragnarok, Bethesda games if you'd enjoy those (in particular Skyrim, though I am biased heavily towards it), GTA games, Wolfenstein games. And of course AA games exist, which also has a ton of great games like Titanfall 2. There's hundreds if not thousands of AAA games, I'm certain there are at least a handful you'd enjoy quite the lot, way more than I listed, considering ones I did I'm personally a big fan of. I'm excluding almost any console exclusives because I play on PC so I already have a ton of options.

It's just I'm not that interested buying a new PC just to play a new Nintendo games. I played the older Bethesda games, but anything after morrowind is trash and just keeps getting worse. Titanfall 2 is kinda dead and everyone left playing that game has hundreds of hours and is maximally tryhard. You are kinda making more of an argument of older AAA games than anything newer tbh. My concerns with denuvo is once they go out of business many games using that DRM will become unplayable unless the game developers remove it but many game developers will remove the game off steam. Its crazy how there are games that are over 5+ years and are still using this DRM despite way past the sales windows these games could end up as abandonware some day. At times the console versions seem to be more superior than the PC versions if a game uses a DRM like Denuvo.

That happened with the Mac OS port of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The DRM it was using had its servers shut down, and the people who did the port didn't feel like fixing it, so they took it off sale and gave existing buyers the finger.

Developers and publishers are on some strong copium if they think employing Denuvo or some other garbage would actually make people buy their games. If people wanted to pirate a game, they're just gonna wait until it's cracked or play something else. If I was a game developer, I'd rather want my game played by someone than not being played by them at all. Because it might create future customers. As someone who used to pirate games when I couldn't afford them, I started buying older games that I already beat just because I played them as a kid and liked them. I don't understand why publishers fail to make such a simple observation.

Quick correction that would make your points even stronger: You've forgotten about VAT in your calculations, which is always included in € pricing, so they'd get 17-27% less on the sale, depending on the country, so needing even more sales to break even. On a different note: The Denuvo guys held a guest lecture at my university last year, we got to ask them questions afterwards and even they themselves claim that they're encouraging the publishers to remove Denuvo protection after the initial sales window, which is probably a good part of why it's happening at all after it gets cracked and/or the first year's contract runs out.

Yep - The first game is DRM-Free and I own it on GOG. Dragons Dogma 2 was I game I really was looking forward to. I tought it was strange it was not announced on GOG too, until I noticed that Denuvo mark on Steam. Now, however, it's fully on my NOT BUY list. Maybe I buy it when they remove Denuvo, or when it's at the bottom of the bargain bin (€2 or something like that). I hate to pay money for something that can be ripped out of my hands at any time. My stance on this has never changed and it never will. It's this simple, if your game is infected with Denuvo, I do not buy it. That malware will never touch my PC. There are (at the time of writing) 90,824 games, that's games, not demos or DLCs, on Steam alone. If you were to play one a day from birth to life expectancy it would take you over three lifetimes to play them all. Bottom line, I have more than enough alternative options out there, with more being released almost every day. So even removing the cancer later is a gamble on your part, because I may well not even see your tired old title under the newer ones whose developers and publishers treat me as a potential customer rather than as a criminal.

I have a plan reduce dependent with Steam and buy on GOG instead. DRM free games mean on theory I can just find the .exe file and launch it, and storing the game everywhere I want. Single player game shouldn't have drm to begin with: Sells a game that 1. Run 2. Players have fun and 3. No DRM, plus some advertising and the ease to update future contents through game launchers like Steam, that is enough for players to flock to the store and buy.

I think these videos are important commentary that almost nobody talks about. It doesnt hurt gaming as much as, you know, the popular ideological topics but on the technical side(which is more obscure and ppl would easily miss it) it does hurt gaming. I think a general effort to relabel "piracy" to something else would be a means towards better. Using the weapon they've used against "piracy" and that's basically trying to poison the well with a toxic term on something that's actually good practice(meaning, archive everything because memory-holing is easier than ever). I suspect the only reason some old games that are cracked still have Denuvo is because in the finances of the company, the cost to Denuvo for those old titles is entirely negligible and is just dwarfed by the cost of it for newer releases. In other words everyone just forgot about it being there and by the time they remember it probably will cost them less money to leave it then to pay the salaries of developers that will have to actually remove it.

The only thing Denuvo and other DRM solutions are protecting against, is the people who can't afford to drop $60 on a game that may or may not be good. Pirates will always find a way. Well what that means that you have customer like myself with Fallout 4. I needed to be sure that game isn't a disaster to spent my money, so I pirated it, played a bit and then deinstalled and buy normally - heck I even gave Betha money for furture dlc's in one go. According to your claim about 'those people aren't going to buy game in first place, it's not really "lost revenue".' I should have never bought 4 after I pirated it, but I did. Truth is many people use pirated versions as demos. We used to have them. Some who were never going to pay for games will play pirated, but people who are on fence with purchase want demo - pirated version is exactly that. So yes if you have annoying Denuvo that tanks performance, you will lose customers. Customer can't test game as publisher doesn't do demos (I don't have to mention atrocious quality standards Triple A lately has) and Denuvo is delaying last ability to test game before decision about purchase. And games that Denuvo is in are badly performing. So overall Denuvo has atrocious reputation, and it's up to ones patience how long they will stand atrocious performance and issues, all to prevent issue publishers don't have and they know it.

Some people got problems with "Back 4 Blood" Steam version after the developer removed Denuvo. I didn't get problems, but the game started slower without Denuvo. It isn't always good to remove Denuvo even legally by the developers.

It is funny seeing "Denuvo makes games take longer to load, worsens performance, makes it incompatible with 3rd party tools, prevents all the nice QoL mods, and often was the reason why people can not play the game at all" followed by "cracked games will always be worse". Anno 1800 is also a great example of just how insanely bad the peformance can get. The cracking-groups have detailed many times before: It is not the cracking of denuvo that is a lot of work. Often it is just fixing all the problems that denuvo causes. Also it should be mandated by law that anti-consumer tactics and scamware like Denuvo MUST be removed after a certain (not too long) time. We have seen it over and over again that these DRMs are the root cause of games not being playable at all after some time. Be it cause they do not work with newer windows version, or that their servers changed. People payed for the games - if any software then makes it impossible to use the thing you already payed then either the company must be forced to pay back the price in full, or remove whatever prevents people from playing the game. And that is not even to mention problems like always-active-DRM that Denuvo also had. "Hey, we know you bought the game, we know you have it legally, we know you can run it, we know it is fully functional - but screw you. You are NOT going to play it in your vacation cause we deem we must monitor your activity at all times. So no Internet to playing". And that for purely singleplayer offline games. (and your cost-calculations are all wrong: No, a sale of 30$ does NOT mean they can keep 30$, or 26$ or whatever after sales. There are various other costs, including taxes. You can roughly estimate those deductions to be 50%)

With the release of Humankind in mind, where the publishers removed Denuvo to protect the player experience, do you think that people who would normally pirate a game would choose to "reward" those kind of acts by buying the game instead of pirating it? If you think they would not, what is the incentive for publishers to not include Denuvo? I know CD Projekt Red are anti-DRM (hence GOG) but don't have any idea whether this stance has actually helped them in terms of increased loyalty/sales from people who would typically pirate games.

Simply avoid triple A like the pest. Indie games cost less, are more original, and usually don't try to shove microtransactions and subscriptions. They are also not big enough to get into bed with user-unfriendly companies like Denuvo.

Now I think the nuber 1 reson to relise unpolished games or unfinished is so later when you updated in 1 to 4 months so cracked game is unfinshed to try make people pay for it. It would't be suprising if that was the reson conpanys would relise unfinished games and finished it in few week aftere relise

The bigger problem is UBIsoft is moving to pure only online service. Rent only, and old games not being available in the future. And when you say "game companies only want money" hell yeah they do, and more power for them for being paid to making good games. But games as service, is basically you own nothing. And companies like Ubisoft treat you as a "money stream" on an endless subscription plan. It doesn't help when all the Microsoft game pass fanboys encourage this type of corporate behavior.
