lol have you seen ‘Paradise PD’ theirs a joke in the first season about a character named Dusty, who’s like 600lbs. In regards to the torpedoes themselves, during WW2 several (mostly) succesful attempts were made to create torpedoes that do not explode on contact with the ship's hull at the waterline but to propel itself underneath the target's hull where an electromagnetic switch picks up on the close proximity to the metal hull and triggers, eventually detonating the torpedo right beneath the target's keel

Bruh torpedo belts were a thing in 1908: The German Imperial High Seas Fleet introduced torpedo belts with the first modern armored cruiser SMS Blücher and the simultaneous battleships of the Nassau-class since 1908. It was the only fleet during the duration of the First World War to do so.
@jasonirwin4631
@jasonirwin4631 3 жыл бұрын
Well you're kind of right the blucher was not the first modern cruisers she was a fairly advanced armored cruisers when she launched but not the first by a long shot. The blucher and nassua class had torpedo bulkheads. These where armored walls inside the ships hull designed to contain the blast and flooding from a torpedo. Torpedo bulges are designed to detonate the torpedo away from the hull.

You also forgot to add in the fact that when torpedoes with reliable magnetic detonators we're being used, the torpedo would detonate underneath the Hull of the ship. This made torpedo bulges and armored belts obsolete when it came to torpedoes, since the Giant Gas bubble form underneath the whole would cause the whole to crack open

Indeed, and during World War 2 torpedoes were starting to use magnetic fuses that would detonate when under the target vessel. Meant the bulges became less and less effective as the torpedoes became more and more advanced. It was less about protecting the sides and more about making sure they never even got under you. Surprised the video didn't mention that part because the shift in tactics was due to the change in how torpedoes killed you.

Those, my dear friends, are called torpedo bulges. They are a layer of material that theoretically detonated the torpedo at a distance far enough away from the main armor that most of the shaped charge explosives lost effectiveness, or the explosion in general lost its effectiveness against the citadel of the ship. Torpedoes were ship killers because they blasted a huge hole into the citadel of the ship. Those bulges detonated the torpedo before it could reache the inner layer of armor of the ship and make a giant hole the size of the Bismark.

one thing they failed to mention is that by ww2 torps did not have to be direct hits to kill or badly damage a warship. the proximity fuse allowed the torps to detonate under the ship causing far more significant damage. this also obsoleted torpedo belts and bulges as they did not protect the bottom of the ship
