Why Did Fabrizio Betray Michael Corleone? Who Killed Apollonia?
In the Godfather, we embark on a journey to the hidden world of the mafia, a dangerous world full of betrayal and deceit. We are introduced to various characters all with their own self interests in mind, but hide it behind smiles and handshakes. Don Vito Corleone was the head of the most powerful mafia family in the country, not only did it come with status and respect, but also immense wealth, he owned various businesses and had various investments in the financial and real estate markets, in addition to controlling various criminal activities and businesses all across the country. But Fabrizio was no mastermind that would be willing or even able to conjure such a bold and daring plot, just to satisfy his jealousy and growing resentment towards Michael. Rather, he found himself as a pawn in a much larger game. This was no more than a ploy used to benefit far more powerful individuals.
And so the question is, who is the true master mind behind this and how does it play a role in the overall mafia war,
Was the real target Michael or Apollonia?
And did Michael get his revenge in the end, if so how?

As soon as Apolonia is killed, that was when Michael Corleones humanity dies. His descending into darkness begins as soon as he returns back to America. That kind of heartbreak numbed him. The death of his older brother Sonny, the attempt on Vito’s Life that nearly killed him and the murder of his Sicilian wife all molded him into the cold blooded calculated Don that became so heartless that he ordered the murder of his own Brother Fredo.

That didn't turn Vito dark. Vito grew up poor and humble, had a wife and children and was happy. Even when he turned to a life of crime, he was still humble. It was Don Fanucci and seeing how he took advantage of other Italians that reminded him of Don Ciccio, that's when he turned dark, but at the same time he still was compassionate and loved his family as opposed to Michael, who became very cold blooded.

Fabrizio didn’t hide his longing to go to America, so I believed that he was the weakest link in Michael’s security. To me, Fabrizio was deeply envious of everything that Michael had: money, a beautiful young wife, a powerful family, etc. He coveted everything that Michael had. As for Michael’s revenge for the death of Apollonia and their unborn child (in the book, she was pregnant when she died), he most likely would have wanted to settle that old debt with a personal touch).

There is a sort of pattern in The Godfather that betrayal is the smart thing to do. Fabrizio, who is somewhat clever, speaks some English etc. betrays. Calo, the other bodyguard, who is rather simple, does not. Tessio betrays later on and Michael comments that it is the smart move and Tessio was always smarter. Clemenza does not although the book has him thinking that it is better to stay put under pressure from the Five Families, unless the situation becomes intolerable.

While I do like the idea of Miachael doing it himself, taking into account the emotionally COLD/emotionless person he became, it does make more sense that he’d send someone else to do it. In the end, the move of having even Fabricio, a lowly pawn, taken out at the same time as the other heads of the families was more valuable in establishing his power and fear. It sent the message that it didn’t matter if you were a Don or a peon, cross Michael and you’re dead.

Back when I was a teenager, I would have definitely said that Michael taking revenge on Fabrizio personally, would have been the best scene in movie history. However, since number of years had passed by since the car explosion in Sicily, during which Michael would have gone through numerous steps forward into legalizing his family’s business and cleansing their reputation. So the more mature and experienced me nowadays would suggest that sending someone trusted to do the dirty job is far more sophisticated and strategically better move than spilling blood personally like a small ghetto fish

It would’ve been a great alternate ending for Godfather II or opening for three. I could see it ending with him before a judge having been tried with murdering him, because he had to do it himself for revenge just like his father. In Sicily is it all about passion, people kill for money and they kill for love.

It would require too much exposition on how Michael covered his identity, or leave a huge plot hole in the rest of the movie. It would just end up being a rehash of the Salazzo assassination.

Michael lost the vision of himself as the family rebel when he resigned to pulling the trigger on McClusky & Sollozo. But, his heart was truly broken at the loss of complete innocence in Appolonia's murder. After that, we don't really see much genuine emotion from him except toward his parents. He was always shown to be a little more emotional and empathetic, for instance at the end of Part 2, in the flashback where Carlo gets introduced to connie and Michael reveals that he will join the Military, Fredo's first reaction is supporting Michael and his decision while the other brothers think of him as rash and stupid. But i liked fredo from the start so this could be clear bias.

But both in the book and the movie the Don doesn't have a "fiery and passionate disposition". In fact, reference is made in the novel that the Don doubts Sonny's potential to run things since he always brings a club even "when a situation calls for a rapier." Now, when Godfather 3 came out there was a quote that Andy Garcia's character was an amalgam of the three brothers but I think you're misremembering it and applying it to Vito's sons.

Kay was probably one of Michael's biggest mistakes. I couldn't stand her from the very beginning. The Godfather was right in not supporting their relationship. She dated into a mob family, married a soon to be Don, then betrayed him in one of the worst ways possible, acting like she was above the very life she very knowingly entered into.

To me it seemed kay wasn't a woman Michael truly loved the way he loved Apollonia. It's crazy to think that Kay was portrayed by Diane Keaton who was so boring and not very attractive (the character is who I'm referring to). But Diane Keaton herself is actually very beautiful and full of life and as an older woman the older she gets the more interesting and she shows a Grace, Elegance, beauty and dignity in aging.

The poetic justice of Fabrizio being blown up in a car bomb attack is in line with Michael's strategic mind and not letting his desire for revenge cloud his judgement. No matter how much he would have liked to have killed Fabrizio by his own hand, he would have known that doing so could have been perceived as a temperamental weakness in the same vein as Santino's temper. Michael knew better than to give into impulse.

So either he wasn’t a Catholic, or he intentionally chose not to pray for the repose of Vito’s soul out of intense resentment, therefore demonstrating the longevity of his hatred for Vito lasting throughout eternity.

I think a Sicilian would get vengeance for a murdered wife face to face. Fabrizio hand cuffed (both hands) to a steering wheel. He looks down on his lap. Dynamite bundle with a wire going out wing window. Michael is a few feet away from the car. Fabrizio starts begging, crying etc ..Michael tells him in Italian it's useless. He continues walking backward. At the corner Michael says "Good Bye". Stepping around the building he presses the trigger.

I'm amazed at how Michael seemed to have lost the ball while in Sicily. He bragged about being a wanted man which gave away his cover. In most of the movie he was focused but lost focus while in Sicily.

There were a number of choices for the vendetta against Fabrizio, which had to happen. In the book, he is assassinated, shot dead. In the deleted scene in the film he is blown up in his car like Apollonia. And, there was a choice to shoot him via Michael's own hand using a lumpara--a symbolic weapon. The easiest choice to eliminate is the last one. Michael can not implicate himself with a personal murder. The assassin shooting Fabrizio is too removed. Instead, the choice was the car bomb with Michael in a vehicle nearby to witness the explosion and the death of Fabrizio. Honor would be satisfied and Apollonia revenged.

The best version is Michael himself revenging his wife Appollonia. This is related to honor, and strictly personal. Michael would not take it as a work for Al Neri or someone else. Michael truly loved her, he never felt the same for Kay. Appollonia was Sicilian, Italian, as Michael's mother was, a natural standard to Corleone's family; in the other hand Kay was American, wanted independence, was not really inside Corleone's family businesses. One was the life's wife and lover; the other was the business' life and not truly a lover. Maybe Fabrizio's pizza could be destroyed by explosion after his murder by Michael's gun.

I remembered the way Fabrizio paused when Michael said "instead of gaining a husband," but it wasn't I until I saw your take, that the penny dropped. To me, that's when Fabrizio looks at him and thinks "You bastard. I've been in love with her for years. She's the only reason we were walking that way, and you just blow in......" To compound this, Michael, who had been astutely meticulous with his decision making up to this point, had already stated "there are people who will pay a lot of money for that information," because he was thinking with his dick. Then he makes a play for Apollonia, and Fab gives him that look. Suddenly, he had a way of getting to America without Michael.

Even though I was a few months old when this movie came out. A few years later my father gave me the book to read first and then a year later I got the movie. To this very day I read the book and play the movie together so I can have both the narrative and the audio visual together! Thanks dad for both gifts! Yes he did. There was a deleted scene where Michael gets his revenge in the US. The Godfather Saga which was shown on with AMC or TCM included many deleted scenes. One of the many reasons why I'm against deleting scenes, especially for time.

That film has such a creepy and unique atmosphere with the serial killer gang roaming around in the night of Los Angeles and the first half feels good while the film felt very rushed and didn't match up with the beginning. That would definitely be better if they threw back the 30 minutes of deleted footage.

I watched The Godfather when it first came out, maybe a few days after it's release. The line to see it was the longest I've ever experienced. Anyway, this version had hitmen going into Fabrizio's pizza parlor in daylight and saying "Greeting from Michael Corleone" and then shooting him several times while Fabrizio was behind the counter. Some years later I rented the movie and was disappointed and puzzled to find that the scene was cut.

BTW, that isn't the first time I saw a scene which was cut after release. I watched "A Clockwork Orange" when it first came out and saw the scene of the character Alex smashing the skull of a woman he was robbing, using a large piece of art in the form of male genitalia. The scene was modified to delete the moment her skull was smashed, which is what you'd see in any VHS or DVD today. It was done to prevent a X rating.

Interesting that the Families never used medieval torture for revenge, even against the murderer of a loved one. Michael's Plan A was to suffocate Hyman Roth in his sleep, Plan B was a bullet. Roth got a quick death. Paulie, Tessio and Fabrizio got quick deaths. Carlo suffered the worst death - Michael toyed with him, made him think he woud live, and then he was garrotted, but still not hacked to pieces or dropped inch by inch into boiling oil like in the Tudors. I guess it would have been hypocritical to take betrayal personally - they just got it over quickly. Did the Mafia have something like the Geneva Convention?

There is a code like you can't kill a "made man" without the permission of the commission(think Tommy killing Billy Bats in Goodfellas then getting wacked himself for doing so). And there are "sit downs" all the time. Watch the Soprano's, they touch on a lot of the so called "honor among thieves" when it comes to the mob.
