Why did I choose the X3 M over the X3 M40i?

I’ve heard X3 M’s getting as low as 13 mpg. I can afford the car, and I can deal with the stiffness, but filling the tank every 4 days on my daily driver will just drive me crazy.

I have the X3 M40i and its amazing to drive and believe me the power isnt as great a difference as you'd think, on the road the power and pace is very similar i know this because i raced one he couldn't catch me and i out accelerated him from a dig he pulled over and we had a chat he couldn't believe how fast the M40i was. If it was a race in a straight line over some distance then the X3M would walk away but street driving the M40i has plenty of power to keep up and the x3m isnt pulling away, not at all. Looks and bragging rights go to the X3M and thats how you decide which spec you want! and budget lol

I do think so own an m40i. Test drove an x3m comp n did a launch. There is not a 20k difference in 0-60 you can barely tell the M is faster

M40I quicker in the lower thought the mid level bands - basically faster than the M and MC 0-100; the B58 engine in the M40I is amazing. just imagine if you turn it. The S58 engine in the m and mc kicks in once the rpm's are over 3,500/3,600. the S58 engine really comes alive as you close in to red lining. great for the track, if you want to track your family suv...hahah

you are right suspension on the X3M is very stiff , if only it was as comfortable as the X3M40i

I know the feeling you describe about needing to own the top trim level or else you‘d constantly think about how to upgrade to it. It’s a bit silly but I’m exactly the same way lol lol

You and I have very similar likes. (21 Raptor, 20 x3 m40i). Got the m40i because of price/ride/mpg/wife drives it. It's a beast on its own!! Good vehicle buying choices!

Try to rent x3 m40i for day or two somewhere Turo, enterprise or some other car rental, I’m sure a lots of people would like to hear head to head comparison from owner off one of those two ( you can feel better real word deference’s because you already know that suv very well), you could make better comparison between those two than other KZbinrs that drive those for only one day.

I see you're in KC. Did you swap out the performance tires or only drive it when it was warm? Was looking at one of these at Baron a couple of days ago, but noticed the performance tires and figured I would need to immediately drop another 1800 or so on a set of Michelin Pilots just to drive it safely half the year here.

For this one I stuck with the summer times, I just didn't drive it in the snow (had another vehicle I used instead). But yea for peace of mind replacing the summer tires not a bad idea. For my wife's X5M I did get a set of snow tires/wheels, but I'd say I only really needed those a few days last year so not worth it having an extra set in my opinion. Oh and if you don't already have a CA at Baron ask for Santiago. He's the best, worked with him several times

Just traded my x3 M competition after 4 years for a m40i. Dallas roads are terrible and the m40i is so much better. I even have 21 inch wheels with run flats on the m40 and it’s night and day.

I would bet so yea. If you're looking for a smooth ride the m40 is a better choice hands down

m40i will drive way better with 20 inch and non runflats. I have a 22 m40i and when i replaced runflats with some ps4 tires it was such a complete different ride. You can instantly feel the difference.

Great video, Matt! How do the X3MC brakes compare to the "grabby" M2C brakes? I'm assuming it's a bit better, but curious to hear your thoughts?

Definitely less "grabby" as you say than the M2C. You can apply a lot more force on the brake when stopping, where with the M2C I feel like I have to be fairly gentle
