Considering every rotation as a possibility of your future self has been my problem these days. I just found this video while searching about life as pulmonary and critical care specialist & I could relate to almost every thing you explained here. This consideration of mine is making more sense to me. Thank you!

I am on my surgery rotation right now and I’m shocked at how much I’m enjoying the procedures but when I got to the ICU I enjoyed it even more, I think because it intergrates more medical management. I won’t jump into my life story but I realized maybe I can get more procedural “hands on” care in with IM and critical care! (I’ve always wanted to do IM especially for global health reasons) Thank you so much for sharing because your video reinforced what I’ve been thinking about!

I didn’t expect to love procedures either. It’s very rewarding to feel like you physically did something to help a patient. Good luck!

I'm a MS1 currently discerning specialties and found your video incredibly honest and impactful. I have been watching a lot of other critical care vids and your explanation for why you chose critical care feels spot on to some of my interests: procedures, general body knowledge, and working with family and discussions at EOL. Many thanks for this!

Thanks for watching! Good luck with choosing your career path. I considered many different specialties before I decided on Critical Care during my second year of IM residency. You definitely learn a lot about yourself while you're deciding.

I'm a sonographer and a new subscriber with you :) In the specialty I work in, we get a lot of residents, but I usually only get them for a day or two. I do like to ask them if they have a direction they'd like to follow, so I can pack as much intensive teaching as possible into the short time they have with me. I think this may be one reason there's pressure to choose a path earlier on?

What's the work-life balance for you? What does your work hours look like on a regular week? How much vacation/ time-off? thank you

I love that your love affair with intensive care started in the wild west of Cooper (aka the CCU) :)

It really was that CCU rotation that did it for me. I was terrified to do it in as a new PGY2 in July but ended up loving it!

I think this is good. You should promote it to young people who are around 17 and starting to think about their futures.

Thanks! I think it’s important to know there’s a whole world of possibilities and you don’t need to commit to anything. When you’re young, there is so much pressure to know EXACTLY what you want to do. At least that’s how I felt!

Are you me? I just matched IM and have the same path as you so far. Thinking of Heme Onc but fell in love with Pulm Crit too 😂

So exciting! Let me know if you have any questions about making the decision. It’ll become more clear once you’re in residency and have more time with each specialty!

What is the deference between pulmonary icu vs icu ? I mean if i specialise in pul icu do I just get pul icu cases?

Is there any connection between Emergency Medicine and ICU specialities, or some how to do both once..? 🤔 Now I'm in Internship Program specifically Internal Medicine Rotation 🙃
@TheIntenseMD2 жыл бұрын
Yes! You can do emergency medicine residency and then a two year critical care medicine fellowship. After you are finished, you can split your time between the ED and ICU. There are many pathways to become an intensivist.

Is the compensation for critical care the same as an IM hospitalist? are the hours the same or better in CC?
@TheIntenseMD2 жыл бұрын
Intensivists make more money than hospitalists. Hours depend on practice setting and which group/hospital system you work for. This is variable, but both hospitalsts and intensivists may work 7 on/7 off or a certain amount of 12 hour shifts per month, etc. They are both (typically) shift work based schedules.
